00:00The Malays must be pushed into doing business to attain the level of success enjoyed by
00:09other communities, says former Law Minister Zayed Ibrahim.
00:13In a post on X, Zayed said the first step would be to reduce the number of Malays in
00:19the civil service, as they will not be business-minded as long as they can depend on working for
00:25the government.
00:26He said the Malays' economic disadvantage in business is partly due to too much meddling
00:32by the authorities on what is permitted and what is forbidden.
00:36He said the government should either help Malays become competitive and support their
00:41businesses or act as a spiritual guide, as it cannot do both.
00:46Zayed also called for an end to the belief that political power will elevate the economic
00:51position of the Malays, stating that if this were true, there would be no need for recurring
00:57special economic congresses and new duiputra agendas.
01:02He explained that Malay political power often leads to well-connected Malays running large
01:07businesses for the government, and criticised some as merely being rent-seekers.
