00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 So you may have noticed recently the Ford Ranger
00:02 has kind of been stealing the limelight,
00:04 but if you do want a dependable and affordable ute,
00:08 the Mitsubishi Triton still has a great price tag on it,
00:11 and they just keep rolling out more of these additions
00:14 with more and more features on them.
00:15 This one here is the top specification Triton GSR.
00:20 It's also got the optional bull bar on the front here.
00:23 This one's priced at a little under $56,000,
00:26 which when you think about it for the top specification,
00:29 is pretty cheap compared to some of the other competitors
00:32 on the market.
00:33 If that's too expensive though,
00:34 the entire range kicks off at just over 24 grand.
00:36 This competes with things like the Toyota Hilux,
00:39 the Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, it's a very full segment.
00:43 Today we're going to be doing a detailed review
00:45 of this ute, so if you do want to skip ahead
00:47 to other parts of this review,
00:48 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:49 or if you're on YouTube, you can scroll down
00:51 and use the chapters below.
00:52 And if you haven't done so already,
00:53 subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon
00:56 so you can find out every single time
00:58 I drive a ute with a big old bull bar.
01:00 Now let's talk exterior.
01:02 You've got four colors to pick from,
01:04 and strangely all but white is free of charge.
01:07 White is just 200 bucks, so it is pretty cost effective
01:10 when you look at some cars.
01:11 In fact, when you look at, what was it the other day,
01:13 the Volvo, which was almost $2,000 to get another color.
01:16 This surely has more paint on it, but anyway,
01:19 this also has the optional accessory bull bar fitted to it.
01:23 What you can't see under the front end there
01:25 is that signature front end that we've seen
01:28 on other Mitsubishi family products
01:30 like the Pajero Sport, Triton,
01:32 and we're now seeing it rolled out to things
01:34 like the Outlander and that kind of thing.
01:36 But this is a pretty decent looking front end.
01:39 They have made a few changes here to this front section.
01:41 So where that bull bar comes in,
01:43 it cuts off part of where your traditional front end
01:46 is around here.
01:47 So they have integrated,
01:48 given that this is a genuine fit item,
01:50 parking sensors into here.
01:52 And that means that you are still getting
01:54 the effects of your front parking sensor.
01:56 Camera is also still there as well.
01:58 So it's good that they've kept all of that intact.
02:00 You don't need to lose any functionality
02:02 just because you want to get this bull bar.
02:04 Now, around the top here,
02:05 you've got LED headlights with LED daytime running lights.
02:09 You can also fit a light bar to the front here
02:11 if you do need additional visibility.
02:13 So you've got screw holes there already,
02:14 and you can get a wiring kit to make all that happen.
02:17 Whip around to the side here.
02:19 You got yourself a set of 18 inch alloy wheels.
02:23 Now, this is an interesting tire
02:24 because we tested the Ford Ranger recently
02:27 with the all-terrain instead of the highway terrain here,
02:29 and weren't a big fan of it in the wet.
02:31 So today is dry,
02:32 but I'll be keen to see how the highway terrain tire
02:34 performs as opposed to the all-terrain tire.
02:37 The design of the wheel is pretty straightforward.
02:39 It's just a black, piano black set up there.
02:41 No wheel arch guards here.
02:42 It is funny.
02:43 The harder core the four-wheel drive is,
02:46 the less sort of artificial cladding and stuff
02:49 they have on the side here.
02:50 This is all just very much a straightforward setup.
02:53 There are rumours as well that Mitsubishi
02:54 is actually working on a more hardcore version
02:56 of the Triton before the next generation comes in.
02:59 So I suspect one of the Australian companies
03:01 that has been modifying utes
03:02 will pick up the contract for that
03:03 and make this a little bit more extreme.
03:05 And keep in mind as well,
03:06 the next generation will share a platform
03:08 with the Nissan Navara with Mitsubishi leading that project.
03:11 So excited to get a bit more information on that.
03:13 Up the top here, you have piano black on the mirror there
03:16 with an indicator built into there.
03:17 You have a camera here for the 360 camera.
03:19 Side steps, it's like a metal of some sort.
03:23 You will notice with things like Ranger,
03:25 I kind of complained that the side steps
03:27 were just fully made of plastic.
03:28 This is just a much better look.
03:30 It's probably just as durable as the plastic setup,
03:32 but I just think it's a better design
03:34 and it just makes it look a little more rugged, I guess.
03:37 You've got privacy glass over here.
03:39 Now around the back here, you've got a mix of LED
03:41 and incandescent here in the rear taillight.
03:44 GSR badge just here, Triton on the other side.
03:47 Haven't seen this before.
03:48 Piano black on the outside on the rear of the car.
03:51 Down here as well, very interesting.
03:53 Unlike other units in this segment,
03:54 this only has a 3,100 kilo brake towing capacity
03:58 instead of three and a half tons.
03:59 So it is a little down on the competition.
04:01 Brake light built into here
04:02 and let's have a little sticky bake under here.
04:04 We'll get rid of this Tonneau cover.
04:06 I like this setup here.
04:07 It's a little different to the others on the market
04:10 with retractable sort of roller covers.
04:12 That's a pretty sort of agricultural setup.
04:14 Now under here, you're gonna find a load depth
04:16 of just over 1,500 mil,
04:18 just under 1,500 mil for the load width
04:20 with 1085 between the wheel arches.
04:23 You have just over 900 kilograms of payload
04:26 and a depth of almost 500 mil as well.
04:29 Now the interesting thing here is we are seeing a lot of
04:31 utes or newly released utes fitted with a torsion bar here
04:35 to make this easier to open and close.
04:37 This is obviously devoid of that
04:38 given how old this platform is,
04:39 but inside the tray here,
04:41 you do have some crudger comforts like your tie downs.
04:44 You've also got the bed liner as well
04:45 just to keep things nice and secure,
04:47 but it is pretty straightforward.
04:49 There are no real bells and whistles here.
04:51 It's just designed to get the job done.
04:53 And it does it, I guess,
04:54 in the most affordable way possible.
04:56 Now let me know what you think of the comment section.
04:59 Is this more up your alley
05:01 or do you wanna go the full ducks nuts of utes
05:03 and spend as much money as you can for all the fancy stuff
05:06 or is a Triton more down your alley?
05:09 Let me know in the comment section below.
05:10 So we are inside the Triton.
05:12 Let's start off with the key.
05:14 So you've got lock, unlock, blank,
05:18 and then on the back you have the Mitsubishi logo.
05:20 This is a proximity sensing key.
05:22 So you leave that in your pocket
05:23 and you have a push button start just over here.
05:25 Look, I'm not gonna lie.
05:26 This is very much like stepping back in time.
05:28 It is kind of where utes were 10 years ago
05:31 in terms of the materials and just the presentation.
05:34 And look, I'm okay with that
05:35 because you're not exactly paying
05:37 super stupendous dollars for this.
05:39 So you can get away with a more basic
05:41 sort of rugged interior.
05:42 So that means scratchy surfaces across the entire car.
05:46 This one has the optional tanned leather interior.
05:49 So you do get these soft touch finishes
05:51 along the sides here in the seats.
05:53 But for the most part,
05:54 this does look pretty sort of basic, which is fine.
05:57 Now, in terms of your touch points,
05:59 that's really nice and soft and quite hard on the door.
06:02 How soft are they?
06:03 Well, we've got our durometer.
06:04 We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
06:07 If you wanna see how this car compares to others
06:09 that we've tested before,
06:10 have a look at the link in the description.
06:12 Build quality.
06:13 It's very wonky through the center there.
06:16 Rest of this feels pretty good.
06:18 Have you owned a Triton before?
06:19 Do you own one now?
06:20 What's it like over the longterm
06:22 in terms of reliability?
06:23 Keen to find out.
06:24 Door test.
06:25 (door creaking)
06:27 Big beeping there,
06:28 but outside of that, the door sounds nice and sturdy.
06:30 Let's chat about infotainment.
06:32 So you have a seven inch infotainment screen.
06:36 It's pretty basic in terms of its functionality.
06:38 So you don't have any inbuilt satellite navigation.
06:41 It's all driven through a smartphone mirroring,
06:43 but in terms of radio,
06:44 you have AM, FM, DAB, digital radio,
06:47 and that's all plumbed through a six speaker sound system.
06:49 The sound system isn't very good,
06:51 but it produces sound.
06:52 So you can listen to it if you need to.
06:55 If you do want your smartphone mirroring,
06:57 it is all wired.
06:58 So it has both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
07:00 I'll show you what Android Auto looks like first.
07:03 So yeah, it's sort of pretty straightforward.
07:07 Works okay.
07:08 Nice and crisp.
07:10 You then also have a voice recognition function,
07:12 and this is what Apple CarPlay looks like.
07:15 So same sort of story.
07:16 Does the job without any dramas.
07:18 One interesting thing though,
07:19 it does actually have HDMI input.
07:22 So I guess if you want to stream a movie
07:24 or something like that, you can do that,
07:26 but I mean, the screen's so small,
07:27 I don't know why you would want to stream a movie on it.
07:30 Ahead of the driver, you do have another small display.
07:32 That is just for your trip computer
07:34 and other basic functions.
07:35 Outside of that, the rest of your controls are analog.
07:37 Now safety, you have autonomous emergency braking.
07:40 You've got an auto-dimming rear vision mirror.
07:42 Blind spot monitoring on the wing mirror.
07:44 You have a lane departure warning.
07:46 Rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors,
07:49 and a 360 camera.
07:50 I'll show you what that looks like.
07:52 (camera beeping)
07:53 Ooh, that is really not good.
07:55 So obviously small screen,
07:57 but you can see the quality of that reverse camera
07:59 is pretty poor.
08:00 You can barely make out what's on our suitcase.
08:03 The guidelines move with the wheel though,
08:05 and this view is fairly redundant
08:07 'cause you just can't see what's going on there.
08:09 Now practicality, we'll start off with your connectivity.
08:11 So down here, you've got that HDMI port I mentioned earlier.
08:14 Two USB-A ports, a 12-volt outlet.
08:17 So no wireless phone charging,
08:19 but in terms of storing your phone,
08:21 it can live down here in this slot down the front,
08:24 although it was designed for earlier phones
08:25 that weren't very big
08:27 'cause it doesn't really fit a big phone,
08:29 but you can pop your phone in the cup holder if you want.
08:31 Coffee cups, so they fit okay in there,
08:34 but the lid runs the risk of getting de-lidded
08:36 if you have a pool-sized coffee cup.
08:39 Bottles fit in there without any dramas, but no teeth,
08:42 so they do move around a little bit.
08:43 Bottle storage inside the door is fine for a small bottle.
08:47 I'll try out a big bottle, see if that goes in there.
08:49 Yeah, no dramas at all, which is good news.
08:51 Center console, nice and deep.
08:54 That is a big old storage slot.
08:56 You've got a glove box down here,
08:57 which is pretty reasonably sized.
08:59 And finally, you have a sunglasses holder up the top.
09:02 So moving on to comfort,
09:03 you have dual-zone automatic climate control.
09:06 You have heated seats for the front row.
09:08 Driver's seat is electrically adjustable,
09:10 so you can go forwards, backwards.
09:12 Backrest can go forwards, backwards.
09:13 You can lift the front, you can lift the back.
09:16 The passenger seat, on the other hand,
09:17 is all manually adjustable.
09:19 In terms of the steering,
09:20 you have both tilt and reach adjustment,
09:23 and on the reach test,
09:24 all of this stuff is easy to reach while you're driving.
09:27 Now, second row, before I hop in,
09:28 let me show you how this works.
09:29 You can drop this down,
09:32 so this gives you a little bit
09:33 of extra storage space behind there.
09:35 This is also where you'll find your two top tether points,
09:38 the jack and a couple of other bits and bobs.
09:42 What's it like if I hop in here?
09:44 Yeah, so it's not the best amount of legroom,
09:48 so my knee is sort of in that seat.
09:50 Toe room is limited, headroom is not too bad.
09:53 So hopefully with the next generation of Triton,
09:55 they do increase the space here a little bit.
09:57 Creature comfort, so you've got a little storage slot there.
09:59 You have under here two USB-A ports.
10:02 You have map pockets here.
10:03 Isofix on the outboard seats
10:05 and the two top tethers behind.
10:08 Got a center armrest here with two cup holders,
10:10 so you can whack your bottle in there if you want to.
10:13 And then you also have storage for a bottle inside the door.
10:17 Now, our window test.
10:19 So it's manual down.
10:20 It doesn't quite go down all the way,
10:23 but I forgot to mention just before,
10:25 you do actually have vents up the top here as well
10:28 with your own fan controls as well, which is pretty cool.
10:31 (air whooshing)
10:32 So I've just hit the road in the Triton.
10:35 Now, not a whole lot has changed here
10:37 in terms of the drivetrain,
10:38 and I don't think we're gonna see any change
10:40 up until the next generation of Triton comes in,
10:43 where they'll probably throw a whole lot more at it.
10:45 At the moment, it's powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged,
10:48 four-cylinder diesel engine.
10:50 Makes 133 kilowatts of power at 430 newton-metres of torque.
10:54 So it is significantly down on most other competitors
10:58 in this segment.
10:59 I think closest to it would be D-max at 450 newton-metres.
11:03 So Ranger, Hilux, they've moved up to 500 newton-metres,
11:07 and then if you go for the V6, it is even higher than that.
11:10 So yeah, look, I think it is a little bit behind,
11:13 but in saying that, this is significantly lighter
11:15 than some of its competitors.
11:17 So it comes in at just under 2,000 kilograms,
11:20 which is some 200-plus kilograms lighter
11:24 than something like a Ford Ranger, for example.
11:27 And that's all made into a six-speed automatic transmission.
11:30 What does it feel like behind the wheel?
11:31 So, get stuck into it here.
11:34 Yeah, look, it does make a fair bit of noise,
11:37 but not a great deal actually happens, which is okay,
11:41 but you will notice that when you're towing,
11:42 you really need to get stuck into it
11:45 for it to keep up with traffic
11:46 if you do have a load on the back.
11:47 So Mitsubishi claims a combined fuel economy
11:50 of 8.6 litres per 100 k's.
11:52 We are currently sitting on 10.2 litres per 100 k's.
11:57 So a little bit higher than that claim,
11:59 but at the end of the day,
11:59 that is kind of what I would expect
12:01 when it comes to a ute this size.
12:03 Now, one innovation that Mitsubishi does have
12:05 that I really like is called
12:06 the Super Select four-wheel drive system.
12:08 So what you can do here,
12:10 just like in the new V6 Ford Ranger,
12:12 you can drive it in two-wheel drive high range,
12:14 or you can drive it in four-wheel drive on sealed surfaces.
12:18 Typically in these dual cab utes,
12:20 you can't use four-wheel drive high range
12:21 on a sealed surface, and if you wanna know why,
12:23 you can click up here
12:24 to watch our four-wheel drive controls explain video.
12:27 Then in addition to that, you can lock the centre diff
12:29 and go into low range.
12:31 So it really has all of those bases covered,
12:33 but I will run you through
12:34 some of those four-wheel drive controls
12:35 when we do go off-road.
12:37 Now, there is no sport mode,
12:38 but you do have these enormous paddles here.
12:40 So let's go for a punt around the track
12:43 and we'll see what it feels like.
12:45 So I'll do part of this in two-wheel drive.
12:48 There is a lot of body roll there.
12:50 That's okay.
12:51 So yeah, the big advantage
12:52 of that Super Select four-wheel drive system
12:54 is that you can run it in two-wheel drive
12:56 or you can run it in four-wheel drive high range
12:59 on sealed surfaces.
13:00 But to be honest, this is actually doing okay even
13:04 just there in two-wheel drive high range,
13:07 sticking to the road, which is all good.
13:11 These paddles do come in handy.
13:12 Like I really don't like in the new Ranger
13:14 how you have to go to the gear stick to do everything.
13:16 Having access to the paddles,
13:17 especially when towing,
13:18 just makes your life a whole lot easier.
13:21 Let's flip that over to four-wheel drive.
13:24 We'll see what this feels like.
13:25 So when it does engage four-wheel drive,
13:27 you immediately feel the steering become heavier
13:30 because you're now driving through the front wheels
13:33 in terms of steering,
13:34 but you're also sending torque
13:36 through the front wheels as well.
13:37 So you do notice a big change there
13:40 in terms of steering feel.
13:42 Here's our back straight.
13:43 I've got that pin to the board
13:44 and not a great deal is happening.
13:46 So yeah, I kind of expected that.
13:49 It is worth noting here as well
13:50 that unlike, again, a lot of the competitors
13:52 in the segment now,
13:53 the Triton still uses hydraulically assisted steering.
13:56 It's fine most of the time,
13:58 but I did notice behind the scenes here
14:00 before we actually start filming,
14:02 I'll do some dynamic runs on the right-hand handling track
14:05 and also on our skid pan.
14:07 And the skid pan has some specific lane markings in there.
14:10 It's got like its own little Motocarna track within it.
14:13 And you do notice that in vehicles like this
14:15 with hydraulic racks,
14:16 when you do get to the end of that little dynamic route,
14:19 it becomes really heavy and hard to steer.
14:21 And that is because you are fully loading up
14:23 that hydraulic system.
14:24 Now that's not an issue in a car like this
14:26 because you're not going to be fanging up a mountain,
14:28 but if you are doing off-road driving
14:29 and you are doing a lot of steering inputs,
14:32 that's where you will notice this thing get really heavy.
14:34 And that's not a great thing to have
14:36 while you're driving off-road.
14:38 Okay, so it is time for our zero to 100 run.
14:43 We actually go up to 120
14:45 so I can get the 80 to 120 overtaking time as well.
14:48 We're going to do this in two-wheel drive.
14:50 And if we do get any wheels slip off the line,
14:51 I'll come back and do it in four-wheel drive,
14:53 but two-wheel drive should be fine
14:55 because we will lose less power going to all four wheels.
14:59 So here it goes.
15:00 (car engine roaring)
15:03 Alrighty, let's have a look at our times.
15:24 If I jump through the menu here.
15:25 So zero to 100, 10.9 seconds.
15:28 So fairly leisurely.
15:30 And 80 to 120, 8.3 seconds.
15:33 So not exactly blisteringly quick.
15:35 And you can just imagine if you load this up with passengers
15:37 and you're towing, it is significantly slower.
15:41 So hopefully they address all of that
15:43 with next generation of Triton.
15:45 Now our reverse test.
15:47 Let's see how quick the Triton will go in reverse.
15:50 Here it goes.
15:51 (car engine roaring)
15:58 All right, we are pretty much capped out there
16:01 at just over 40 kilometers an hour in reverse.
16:05 Now, what about the ride?
16:06 Now, this is something that Triton isn't too bad at.
16:10 It is on the softer side,
16:11 and that means in and around the city,
16:13 it is pretty compliant.
16:15 That does mean that it is not that great
16:17 when you do hit corrugated sections of road,
16:19 but for the most part, it's fine
16:21 and is much better when you do finally load it up.
16:23 So let's send it over our sine waves.
16:26 We'll dial this up to 130 Ks an hour
16:29 and see what it feels like.
16:30 Typically, utes over these don't love it
16:33 because they're built for comfort
16:35 as opposed to being able to tackle sine waves at 130.
16:39 So we'll see what this feels like.
16:41 Whoa, that is floaty, floaty, floaty.
16:45 Yeah, it's actually about on par with the Ford Ranger
16:50 in terms of its floatiness, which is interesting.
16:52 It's not significantly worse.
16:53 So it sort of is there with its competitors.
16:56 Now, what's it like in terms of road noise?
16:58 Well, it's actually surprisingly pretty good.
17:00 I drove here on the freeway on a course chip road,
17:02 and it was really actually not that bad.
17:04 A lot of dual cab utes,
17:05 especially with all terrains, are quite loud,
17:07 whereas this was very bearable
17:09 and something I'd be happy to drive
17:11 over a longer distance.
17:12 Now, what's your visibility like?
17:13 So you can clearly see down the front of the car there,
17:15 especially with that bull bar.
17:17 I catch the edge of that
17:18 so you get a better idea of how much room you have.
17:20 Big wing mirrors, blind spot monitor built into those,
17:22 and then visibility out the back is excellent as well.
17:25 And in terms of turning circle, it's just under 12 metres,
17:27 which is about what you expect for a big ute like this.
17:30 Now, time to test our lane support system.
17:32 So if this did have a semi-autonomous steering function,
17:35 which it doesn't,
17:36 I'd be using the three outer lanes
17:37 to see how well that works.
17:38 All this has is a lane departure warning.
17:40 Because this is a hydraulically-assisted steering rack,
17:43 there's no way of actually integrating
17:45 a lane-keeping assistant into it.
17:47 So the best that it can do,
17:48 or any car with this type of steering,
17:50 is basically just pulse at the brakes
17:52 or buzz at you or vibrate.
17:55 So let's just veer over here.
17:56 (car beeping)
17:57 Yeah, literally all it does is beep at you,
17:59 which is pretty basic.
18:01 Right-o, time to do a little bit of light off-roading.
18:05 So I'm excited 'cause we've got a new course set up here,
18:08 and I think it's really gonna nicely test
18:10 some of these vehicles.
18:12 Now, before I run you through that,
18:13 I'll run you through the specs on the Triton.
18:15 So it has a ground clearance of 220 mil.
18:18 It has an approach angle of 31 degrees.
18:20 That is the angle of the face you can approach
18:22 before you hit something at the front of the car.
18:23 And then it has a departure angle of 23 degrees,
18:26 which is the same angle but in reverse.
18:29 Now, our little course here,
18:30 I'm gonna attempt this in two-wheel drive in dual cab utes,
18:33 because I really wanna see
18:34 how the traction control systems work.
18:36 Then for our offset Mogul, which I do in two-wheel drive,
18:39 I'll turn around and come back at it
18:41 in four-wheel drive high range,
18:43 because that's going to kick up a couple of tyres in the air
18:45 and put some more stress on those traction control systems.
18:48 And then we'll do some low-range stuff
18:49 on another hill I have around the corner there,
18:51 plus a river crossing.
18:52 So let's give this a crack first
18:54 in two-wheel drive high range.
18:56 This is strictly for us to get an idea
18:59 of how the traction control systems work.
19:01 So we're approaching now.
19:02 So we're now in a position where that tyre
19:05 on my right side is going to have little traction.
19:10 There it is there.
19:11 And we're now forcing the traction control system
19:13 to work its hardest to send torque to the other wheel.
19:17 It's doing a really good job.
19:18 So if this has a bad traction control system,
19:22 it's basically just going to leave us hanging there
19:25 and we won't get anywhere.
19:26 But that is a really nice setup.
19:27 Then on the exit here as well,
19:30 there is limited traction there too,
19:32 because now we have that one off the ground
19:34 and you're kind of forcing it
19:35 to send all the torque to that wheel.
19:37 So that is an impressive effort now.
19:40 It's very muddy at this other end,
19:41 so I'm going to have to really get stuck into this now
19:44 to get out of here without getting stuck.
19:48 Oh, as we grind to a halt, come on.
19:50 Jesus, all right, we'll pop this into four high.
19:54 See, this is why you should listen to my advice,
19:58 which is always get your four wheel drive mode set up
20:01 before you get stuck, not after you're stuck.
20:05 But I'm okay here.
20:07 I've got enough motion to go forwards, backwards.
20:09 There we go.
20:10 Four wheel drive, I'll get out of there.
20:13 All right, now let's go back.
20:15 And this time around,
20:17 I'm going to put it into four wheel drive high range
20:19 with the center diff locked.
20:21 So this is going to put a lot of strain on the system
20:24 because we're telling the car,
20:26 you need to send 50% of torque to the front axle
20:28 and the rear axle at the same time.
20:31 And then the traction control needs to sort out
20:33 the rest of it, which is getting over this offset mogul.
20:36 You do have a set of drive modes you can pick here
20:38 when you are in this four wheel drive high range
20:40 with center diff locked scenario.
20:42 So I'm going to select mud,
20:44 because that is what we're on now.
20:46 And then we'll climb our mogul here and see how it goes.
20:50 So there's the first step.
20:53 So as we get up to this point here,
20:55 we have full compression on that side.
20:58 And then right now we have two wheels off the ground.
21:03 It's that one and that one.
21:05 Telling the traction control system to do its work.
21:08 All right, that is seriously impressive.
21:11 So right now we're kind of see-sawing there.
21:14 (car engine revving)
21:16 That is sensational.
21:17 That has done it all on its own,
21:19 just with the aid of traction control.
21:21 So yeah, bloody impressed there with Triton.
21:23 It's able to use its traction control
21:25 without getting the car bogged down like you find
21:27 sometimes you can with the D-Max.
21:30 Okay, next up we have our hill climb here.
21:33 This is fairly muddy at the top here.
21:35 So this is the opportunity to test low range.
21:38 I'm going to flick that all the way over.
21:40 You put it into neutral,
21:41 it does its shift there into low range.
21:44 You need to be in low range
21:45 for the rear differential lock to work as well.
21:47 So we're going to get that sorted.
21:50 There we go, that is in low range.
21:52 Takes a little bit of time there.
21:54 Let's pop the rear diff lock on as well.
21:57 So that is now active.
21:58 You can see there that it switches off stability control,
22:01 ABS, traction control when we are in low range.
22:04 Let's give this a shot.
22:05 We're on highway terrain tires,
22:07 so it might struggle a little bit up the top here.
22:12 See how it goes.
22:13 A little bit of a slip there.
22:15 Come on.
22:16 All right, we got there in the end.
22:19 So tiny bit of a slip at the top.
22:21 Then we've got our bog hole here.
22:22 So I'll just smash it through here.
22:25 There it is, beautiful.
22:26 And then we have our descent.
22:28 So I've got a hill descent control here.
22:30 Look, well, there you go.
22:32 It says hill descent control not available
22:33 with rear diff lock on.
22:34 So I'm going to switch that off.
22:36 To be honest, I probably wouldn't even use
22:39 hill descent control if I was in low range anyway,
22:43 but because science, we will give it a shot.
22:46 So that is engaged.
22:49 Crest this hill, I can't see anything.
22:51 Here we go.
22:53 See what it's like.
22:54 My foot is off the brake.
22:56 Yeah, it's not too bad.
22:57 It's probably a little bit slow.
22:59 And I don't have the ability to use the cruise control here
23:03 to speed it up at all.
23:04 So it's a nice casual descent, but yeah, to be honest,
23:07 I think I would just prefer to just control that all on my own.
23:10 Okay, time to give our rocks a crack.
23:17 So there is actually a rock mode here.
23:18 So I'll change that to that drive mode.
23:21 So in that rock mode, it sort of takes a bit of sensitivity
23:25 out of a throttle there.
23:26 I've mentioned previously in these videos before
23:29 that I do prefer low range over rocks.
23:31 Just gives you a little bit more control.
23:33 And then in addition to that,
23:34 I'll ride the brake and the throttle at the same time.
23:39 Again, just to manage speed,
23:40 so it doesn't sort of race over any of this stuff
23:43 and give us a good old whack if you land on something hard.
23:46 So yeah, obviously if you're gonna be doing anything serious
23:49 in terms of rock driving like this,
23:50 you're gonna want like a mud terrain
23:53 or a proper all-terrain tire,
23:54 'cause it's pretty easy to cut the sidewall
23:57 if you attack a pretty jagged rock, especially at speed.
24:00 So keep that in mind.
24:01 But yeah, this is doing a great job.
24:02 It's really nice and comfy inside the cabin.
24:04 I haven't touched down yet.
24:06 But you guys, it's actually pretty good.
24:08 We ran the new Ranger over this recently
24:10 and it was touching down on sidesteps,
24:13 whereas this is just coming over this without any problems.
24:15 It is funny, despite how old this is,
24:18 it is still doing a remarkably good job
24:21 on our light off-road course, which is pretty awesome.
24:23 Okay, and the last thing we're gonna test here
24:25 while we're in low range is our river crossing.
24:28 To get to the river crossing,
24:29 we have a little bit of a drop in just here.
24:34 (water splashing)
24:37 Now, I mentioned earlier that putting it into low range
24:40 turns off your traction control, ABS,
24:43 and all that sort of stuff,
24:44 but it is just with the diff locked that it does that.
24:46 So I've got it in low range at the moment on gravel mode.
24:49 I'll change that to mud
24:51 and see how it goes for our river crossing.
24:54 Now, Mitsubishi doesn't actually have a wading depth
24:56 for the Triton, which is really weird.
24:58 So I've been told that this is going to be fine
25:01 for it to go through.
25:02 Currently it's 650 in our water crossing here.
25:05 So TPC, we'll see what happens.
25:08 A lot of beeping there from the parking sensors,
25:11 which is annoying.
25:11 Let's switch that off.
25:12 Yes, it's getting through that without any problems.
25:15 We'll see what it's like on our climb here
25:17 with these highway terrains.
25:19 No complaints there from the tow bar either.
25:23 Good amount of traction here as we press this.
25:27 Look at that, no problems at all.
25:32 I'm seriously impressed with the Triton.
25:34 I actually thought this was going to be not very good here,
25:36 even on our light off-road course,
25:37 but it has surprised me just how well it is attacking
25:41 all of this stuff.
25:41 So yeah, good job Mitsubishi.
25:43 So the Mitsubishi Triton,
25:47 I was surprised how well it actually performed off-road.
25:49 There is still some life left in this.
25:51 You don't have to discard it just yet.
25:53 On road, it is very much let down by the engine now,
25:57 just feeling a little bit slow.
25:58 Misses out on electrically assisted steering,
26:00 doesn't have a lot of safety tech that is now standard
26:03 on a lot of other utes in this segment.
26:05 But ultimately you're paying a price
26:07 that reflects all of that.
26:08 It's not like they're charging mega dollars for this.
26:10 So I think that if you don't want to spend big bucks
26:13 on a Hilux or a Ranger or something like that,
26:16 this really is still quite fun to drive.
26:18 And if you're going to do some off-road driving,
26:19 it's just straight out of the box.
26:20 It just does what you need it to do.
26:22 So let me know in the comments section below,
26:24 are you a Triton owner?
26:25 What have they been like long-term?
26:26 Are you in the market for a ute?
26:28 And will you look at this
26:29 or are you going to go straight to the top of the tree?
26:31 Let me know what you think down in the comments section.
26:33 I should also mention that it comes
26:34 with a 10 year warranty as well.
26:36 So that's probably one of the other bonus too.
