00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 So, if you have lots of kids,
00:03 but you don't really want a people mover,
00:05 a lot of people are going to these,
00:07 which is a ute, but with an SUV body on it.
00:11 And typically they have seven seats as well,
00:13 and are off-road capable.
00:14 This is the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
00:16 This one here is the top spec, it's called the GSR.
00:19 They introduced this trim a little while back,
00:21 and I thought, let's have another crack at this,
00:22 'cause the last one that we drove
00:23 was kind of a mid-spec version.
00:25 Now this competes with things like the new Ford Everest,
00:27 the Toyota Fortuna, the Isuzu MU-X.
00:32 It's priced at just over $62,000.
00:35 But if that's too expensive,
00:36 the entire range kicks off at just under 45 grand.
00:39 Today we're going to do a detailed review of this car,
00:41 including some off-road driving as well.
00:43 So if you do want to skip ahead
00:44 to other parts of this review,
00:45 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:47 or if you're on YouTube,
00:48 you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:50 If you haven't done so already,
00:50 subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon,
00:52 so you can find out every single time
00:55 we drive a very black car.
00:57 (air whooshing)
00:58 So let's talk exterior.
00:59 You've got three colors to pick from,
01:01 and the only one that's going to cost you money
01:02 is the pearl white, which is 200 bucks.
01:04 So pretty reasonable value for money, I reckon.
01:06 So GSR gets like all the murdered out parts.
01:10 So you have black Pajero sport lettering
01:12 and black highlights throughout the car.
01:14 I reckon they could have gone a bit further with the black
01:16 and maybe blacked out these chrome elements
01:18 and the wing mirrors too.
01:19 That probably would have done the job.
01:20 Oh, by the way, sorry about all the flies
01:22 and the noisy stuff in the background.
01:24 It is summer in Australia,
01:25 so sweltering heat and annoying flies.
01:28 So big Mitsubishi logo just up the top here.
01:30 You have a camera here for the 360 camera,
01:32 cooling here for that four-cylinder diesel engine.
01:35 I actually think it looks really good in black as well.
01:38 They've done a good job of just giving this
01:40 a bit of a sinister look there
01:41 with all those black highlights.
01:43 Over on the side here,
01:43 you have a set of full LED headlights
01:45 with LED daytime running lights.
01:47 Indicator is housed down the bottom here.
01:49 Around the side of the car,
01:51 you have 18 inch alloy wheels,
01:55 and then you have pretty decent looking tire as well.
01:59 So this should actually perform okay off-road.
02:01 So we'll see how that goes
02:02 when we do a little bit lighter off-roading,
02:04 but black wheel set up there.
02:06 And then also under the skin there,
02:07 you have disc brakes front and rear as well,
02:10 unlike the Triton, which has drum brakes at the back.
02:12 Up the top here, you have chrome on top of that wing mirror
02:15 with an indicator built into there,
02:16 camera on the side there.
02:18 I mentioned this before on our Everest review.
02:22 I don't know why they make off-roaders like this
02:24 with these sort of fairly chintzy sidesteps,
02:26 because if you hit that with a rock beneath the skin,
02:28 it's probably gonna do a fair bit of damage to that.
02:30 So if you are gonna be doing any serious off-roading,
02:32 I'd be replacing those with the proper set of rock sliders,
02:35 just so you don't do any permanent damage.
02:37 Chrome door handles there.
02:40 I think it would have been nice
02:40 to just have all of this blacked out as well.
02:43 Privacy glass, roof rails,
02:45 and then whip around to the back.
02:46 Up the top there, you have a shark fin aerial.
02:49 You have a boot mounted spoiler.
02:52 Pajero Sport badges down the bottom there.
02:55 Mitsubishi badge just there.
02:56 In terms of towing,
02:57 this has 3,100 kilogram brake towing capacity.
03:00 So it's down on the 3,500 kilo that you find in the Everest
03:04 and also the updated MUX as well.
03:06 And then partial LED tail lamps as well.
03:09 So let me know what you reckon about the Pajero Sport.
03:12 They haven't really changed it a great deal.
03:14 I should call out at this point
03:15 that this is technically a 2022 model.
03:19 There is a 2023 coming just after we film this.
03:22 The only change it's gonna have to the vehicle
03:24 that we're testing here today
03:25 is that it comes with tire pressure monitoring as well.
03:28 So this is virtually what you'll get
03:29 if you buy a 2023 version of this.
03:31 So let me know what you reckon about the design
03:33 in the comment section below.
03:34 So we're inside the Pajero Sport.
03:36 Let's start off with the key.
03:38 So it has a lock unlock boot on the back.
03:42 It has a Mitsubishi logo.
03:44 I don't know which way around that's meant to go.
03:46 There we go, that way.
03:47 It is a proximity sensing key.
03:49 So you can leave that in your pocket.
03:50 Once you're inside,
03:51 push button start over here.
03:53 Look, this interior is getting very, very dated now.
03:57 And it looked fine when this first came out a long time ago,
04:00 but it really is starting to feel its age.
04:02 And look, they do price this accordingly,
04:05 but Mitsubishi is moving up market.
04:07 And I reckon if they start asking even more money than this
04:11 for perhaps the next generation,
04:13 it really needs to feel significantly better than this
04:16 to charge that kind of premium.
04:17 So it's all sort of pretty scratchy plastics
04:21 across the vehicle.
04:22 Aside from this section here, which is pretty nice.
04:24 You can rest your knee on that.
04:25 But yeah, I think this probably needs a significant update
04:28 with the next generation and the infotainment system.
04:30 I'll run through that in a second,
04:31 but this is not very good at all.
04:34 In terms of your touch points in the center here,
04:36 that is really nice and soft, soft on the door as well.
04:39 How soft is it?
04:40 Well, we've got our durometer.
04:42 We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
04:44 If you want to see how this car compares to others
04:46 that we've tested before,
04:47 have a look at the link in the description below.
04:49 Now, what about build quality?
04:51 Pretty wonky through there.
04:54 Rest of this feels okay though.
04:56 And our door test.
04:57 Lots of beeps in this car as well,
05:00 but the door sounds nice and solid.
05:02 So let's talk infotainment.
05:05 It may look like a reasonably sized screen at eight inches,
05:08 and it's a color touchscreen as well
05:10 with shortcut buttons down at the bottom,
05:11 but it's probably one of the poorest infotainment systems
05:14 fitted to any car on the market today.
05:16 It is just very clumsy and slow to use.
05:18 The voice recognition is totally useless,
05:21 and I'll show you that in just a second.
05:22 But yeah, I mean, look,
05:24 navigation is an aftermarket TomTom unit,
05:27 a little bit tricky to use, pretty slow as well.
05:31 Yeah, it's just not very impressive.
05:33 On the radio front, you have AM/FM digital radio,
05:36 and that's all plumbed through an eight speaker sound system.
05:39 Sound system is okay, nothing special.
05:41 You do have HDMI input though, which is kind of different.
05:45 You can also play video through USB,
05:47 and I don't know what purpose that would serve,
05:51 maybe just when the car's stationary or something,
05:53 but there you go, you have that feature anyway.
05:55 Outside of that, it's all pretty basic in here.
05:57 There's really nothing else to it.
05:59 You do have smartphone mirroring though, which is great news.
06:01 So you have both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
06:05 Before I show you that,
06:06 I'll run you through what I mean here
06:07 with the voice recognition.
06:09 I'm gonna try ask it to call,
06:12 I'll try ask it to call Sean, who's standing next to me.
06:14 - Please speak after the beep.
06:18 - Call Sean Lander.
06:19 - Could not recognize, press the speech key and speak again.
06:25 - Telephone.
06:26 - Telephone.
06:28 Say a telephone number or a voice tag registered name.
06:32 - Call Sean Lander.
06:33 - Could not recognize, press the speech key and speak.
06:38 - So you just go in this random cycle
06:41 of it not being able to recognize anything that you say.
06:44 So that's pretty disappointing.
06:45 And this is what Apple CarPlay looks like.
06:47 So yeah, pretty straightforward.
06:49 Tiny bit laggy as you scroll through the screen there,
06:51 but it's fine, it sort of does the job.
06:53 This is what Android Auto looks like.
06:56 So full screen integration, similar to Apple CarPlay though,
07:00 tiny bit laggy as you move through those screens just there.
07:04 So from an infotainment point of view,
07:06 this really isn't very good.
07:07 Head of the driver though,
07:08 you do have a digital display
07:10 that you can make very minor changes to.
07:12 That gives you information such as your speedometer,
07:15 you've got a tachometer in there
07:16 and a few other sort of trip computer details as well.
07:18 So let's talk safety tech.
07:19 You have autonomous emergency braking.
07:22 You have an auto dimming rear vision mirror,
07:25 blind spot monitor built into the wing mirror.
07:27 You have radar cruise control.
07:29 You have rear cross traffic alert.
07:31 You have front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera.
07:35 You can activate the camera here on the steering wheel.
07:36 So give that one hit.
07:38 Camera is very low quality.
07:39 I mean, I can't really even tell what I'm looking at there.
07:43 It's very low resolution and quite dim as well.
07:46 And then as I gradually move through the views,
07:48 I'm not really getting any better clarity there at all.
07:51 I'll put the reverse camera on.
07:54 Can't even see what's on the suitcase either.
07:56 So yeah, this needs a much higher quality injection
08:00 on the camera front.
08:01 And what about the horn?
08:02 This is what it sounds like.
08:03 (horn honking)
08:06 Moving on to practicality
08:07 and we'll start off with your connectivity.
08:09 So I mentioned before, you've got a HDMI port,
08:11 two USB ports for your smartphone mirroring
08:14 and also charging and a 12 volts outlet as well.
08:18 Terms of storing your phone,
08:20 you've got plenty of storage space for it.
08:22 There is no wireless phone charging.
08:23 So you just plonk that down there somewhere.
08:25 What about your cups?
08:26 So let's start off with the coffee cup.
08:28 This morning on the way here,
08:29 I realized that this is just perfect enough
08:32 to fit your coffee cup.
08:33 You can get it out without delidding it.
08:35 In addition to that,
08:36 it fits your normal bottles in there as well
08:38 with decent sized teeth to hold them in place.
08:41 Bottle fits inside the door too without any dramas,
08:43 but I don't think it'll fit this big bottle.
08:46 Give it a shot.
08:47 It doesn't fit the big bottle unfortunately.
08:50 Other storage, you have center console here
08:52 with a coin tray, pretty reasonably sized.
08:55 You have storage down here as well,
08:57 which is pretty reasonably sized too.
09:00 You have a glove box over here.
09:02 That's good size.
09:03 And then you have a sunglasses holder up the top as well.
09:06 On the comfort front,
09:07 you have dual zone automatic climate control.
09:10 You also have a blower control
09:11 for your second and third rows.
09:13 Down here, you have heated seats for your front two seats.
09:16 Sorry about the flies.
09:17 And then in terms of seat adjustment,
09:19 both the driver and front passenger
09:20 are electrically adjustable.
09:22 So you can go forwards, backwards.
09:24 Your backrest can go forwards, backwards.
09:26 You can lift the front of the seat, back of the seat.
09:28 You also have lumbar adjustment as well.
09:30 Seats are super comfy too.
09:32 They just huck you in really nicely.
09:34 On the steering front,
09:35 you have both tilts and reach adjustment.
09:38 And on our reach test,
09:39 all of this stuff is easy to reach while you're driving.
09:41 So second row of the Pajero Sport.
09:44 Look, knee room is okay, but not amazing.
09:47 Toe room's not very good at all.
09:48 And headroom is okay, but not amazing as well.
09:51 I'm actually sitting really high up here.
09:54 It's kind of got like a stadium seating thing.
09:56 So you can see down the front there.
09:57 So perhaps they could have brought it down
09:59 just a little bit more to give you
10:01 a bit more headroom there.
10:03 Anyway, you have mat pockets back here.
10:05 You also have, which I love here,
10:07 an actual power socket, 220 volt, 150 watt.
10:11 You then have two USB charging ports,
10:13 air vents up the top here.
10:16 Center armrest here with a pair of cup holders.
10:19 We'll see how that fits our bottle.
10:21 No dramas at all.
10:22 You can also pop this one inside the door as well,
10:25 if you want.
10:27 Fitting kids in here.
10:28 So you have two ISOFIX points on the outboard seats.
10:31 You then have three top tether points here.
10:33 You do have to construct your own seatbelt though,
10:37 the center seat here, which I just find really strange,
10:40 but anyway, it is what it is.
10:42 And finally, our window test.
10:44 So it's manual up and down.
10:48 Doesn't quite go all the way down.
10:49 So third row of Pajero Sport.
10:54 Can you fit adults in there?
10:55 It's a little bit mismatched
10:56 because it's a 60/40 split folding seat,
10:59 but the 60 side is on this side.
11:02 So it kind of takes up a little bit of room,
11:04 but let's basically roll it forward.
11:06 It tumbles out of place.
11:09 And then let's see how much room we got back here.
11:13 Clip that into position.
11:16 Lift that up as well.
11:18 Actually a surprising amount of room here.
11:21 So headroom is not very good at all.
11:23 My head is sort of wedged into the ceiling there,
11:26 but knee room is surprisingly good.
11:28 Toe room is fairly limited,
11:30 but I think if I had to sit back here,
11:31 it'd be perfectly comfortable.
11:33 So two cup holders over here and a 12-volt outlet.
11:36 I also have air vents up here as well to keep me cool.
11:41 So look, this is actually better
11:42 than I thought it was gonna be.
11:43 I didn't think it would be spacious,
11:46 but I also thought it would be much, much worse than this.
11:49 So I have a feeling there's not gonna be much boot room
11:52 though, because it does look pretty small back there.
11:53 So let's go see exactly how much you can actually fit
11:56 in the back of this.
11:56 So let's talk cargo space.
11:59 You've got a powered tailgate.
12:02 Wait for that to pop up.
12:03 Well, that is very low.
12:06 You're gonna have to duck down to get into there.
12:11 In this space here,
12:11 you have just over 130 litres worth of cargo volume,
12:15 which isn't a great deal,
12:16 but you do have this little hidey hole down the bottom here,
12:18 including your little lever there
12:20 to get your spare tyre down and two hooks off to the side.
12:25 Really can't fit much back there.
12:27 To get this down, it's quite an interesting system.
12:29 So instead of just dropping this,
12:32 because it kind of just sits there like that,
12:34 you have to first drop the base of the seat,
12:38 which flips up and out of the way,
12:40 and then you drop the top.
12:42 So you have that kind of awkward arrangement there.
12:45 But when you do drop all of that out of the way,
12:48 you have just over 500 litres of cargo space.
12:54 I'll show you what that looks like with our bags in there.
12:57 It all sort of fits in perfectly fine.
13:01 If you do then want to expand the space even more,
13:03 you're gonna drop the second row manually from the sides.
13:06 You come around here to do that.
13:10 And then once that is dropped,
13:16 you have a space of just under 1500 litres
13:19 on a fairly flat load floor.
13:24 Well, we've hit the road in the Pajero Sport.
13:26 Let's kick off with the engine.
13:27 Look, it's gonna sound familiar
13:28 if you know the engine in the Trident.
13:30 It is a 2.4 litre turbocharged diesel engine.
13:34 Makes 133 kilowatts of power and 430 newton metres of torque.
13:39 And that's all made it
13:41 to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
13:43 How does all that feel behind the wheel?
13:45 Yeah, look, it's actually, yeah, it's interesting
13:50 because we've driven the Everest now a fair bit,
13:52 and that's 500 newton metres of torque,
13:54 but the Everest is pretty heavy,
13:57 and this isn't quite as heavy as the Everest.
13:59 And that means that it does still feel pretty peppy
14:02 in a straight line.
14:03 If you're kind of the only person in the car,
14:05 if you are towing and you have a family on board,
14:06 it is considerably slower.
14:08 It does feel sort of fairly heavy out on the road,
14:11 especially when you're waiting for it to kick down gears
14:14 and sort of make its mind up.
14:16 The gearbox is pretty decent.
14:17 It can hunt a little bit at times,
14:19 but for the most part,
14:20 it does a good enough job of leaning on its torque band,
14:22 getting things up and moving.
14:24 Probably one of the biggest things I like
14:25 about this particular vehicle
14:27 is the ability to switch between two-wheel drive high range
14:30 and four-wheel drive high range on sealed surfaces.
14:33 Typically with these Ute-based SUVs,
14:35 you can't switch between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive
14:37 unless you're on an unsealed surface.
14:40 And we go into a bit more detail on that
14:42 in our four-wheel drive controls video,
14:44 which you can watch by clicking up here.
14:46 And that explains why you can't do that,
14:49 this system is called Super Select four-wheel drive.
14:51 So I'll go through the actual four-wheel drive functions
14:53 once we do go for a bit of light off-roading later on.
14:56 Righto, let's talk fuel economy.
14:57 So Mitsubishi claims a combined average
14:59 of eight litres per 100 Ks.
15:02 We are currently sitting on,
15:05 we're currently sitting on 9.8 litres per 100 Ks,
15:08 which I think isn't too bad
15:10 when you consider the size of this vehicle.
15:12 So it could be much worse is what I'm trying to say.
15:16 Righto, let's talk about ride.
15:18 Look, the ride is very soft
15:20 and it's good for driving in and around the city
15:23 'cause it means you will be comfortable inside the car,
15:25 but there will be compromises
15:27 when you are on the rougher stuff
15:29 and we're approaching our sine waves now.
15:31 I'm gonna jack the speed up to 130
15:33 just so I can demonstrate what I mean.
15:36 Because it is ute-based,
15:37 they've ditched leaf springs at the rear,
15:40 gone with coil springs.
15:41 And even now as we're approaching our sine waves,
15:44 it is so floaty and all over the place.
15:47 I suspect when we do hit this at 130,
15:49 it is going to be, wow, that is so bad.
15:53 Yeah, it really is all over the place.
15:55 It has barely any body control at that top end
15:58 and it means that it floats and crashes
16:00 over those continuous undulations.
16:03 And you're gonna find those become a real problem
16:05 if you drive out in the country,
16:07 you're overtaking a long stretch of vehicles
16:09 and you need to pick your speed up a little bit.
16:11 130 is the maximum speed limit in Australia
16:13 and it struggles at 130 if you hit a bump.
16:15 You can imagine if you're dialling on a few more cars
16:17 to overtake, it is really gonna start feeling
16:20 all over the shop, especially if you are towing.
16:22 So I'd probably look at an aftermarket suspension kit
16:25 if you are gonna be doing some serious driving
16:26 in the country because the standard setup
16:28 really isn't adequate for a proper country drive.
16:32 Okay, drive modes.
16:35 You do have some drive modes here for off-road driving,
16:39 but we will just leave all that as it is for the moment
16:42 and go for a punt around our trackage
16:43 to see what it all feels like.
16:46 It is called a Pajero Sport.
16:48 It has so much body roll.
16:55 Yeah, steering isn't overly communicative either,
16:59 so it's a hydraulically assisted steering rack.
17:02 Look, they call it the Pajero Sport,
17:04 but I'm not seeing where they get Sport in the name.
17:08 So, yeah, I'm not even gonna bother pushing
17:10 any harder than that because it is very sloppy.
17:13 Yeah, look, ultimately, yes, I understand
17:15 you're probably not gonna be doing this type of driving
17:18 in your Pajero Sport, but we test all these cars
17:21 the same back-to-back.
17:22 When we tested the Everest recently,
17:25 it is like a Ferrari compared to this through the corners.
17:27 It really is a huge difference.
17:30 So hopefully with the next generation of this,
17:32 Mitsubishi really works on the handling
17:34 and just giving it a better balance between comfort
17:37 and dynamic capability as well.
17:40 (car engine revving)
17:43 Lower speed stuff, you have a turning circle of 11 metres,
17:46 and I mentioned earlier as well,
17:47 towing capacity of 3,100 kilos with a braked trailer.
17:50 Let's talk about visibility.
17:52 So I can clearly see the fronts of the bonnet there.
17:55 The wing mirrors are nice and big
17:56 with a blind spot monitor built into them.
17:58 Visibility out the back isn't too bad,
18:00 but do keep in mind if you have the third row up,
18:02 you are gonna have pretty compromised vision out the rear,
18:05 and with the poor quality 360 camera,
18:07 it will make parking this a little bit tricky as well.
18:09 Now, what about road noise?
18:11 It's actually surprisingly pretty good,
18:12 despite the fact this is sitting on some pretty chunky tyres.
18:15 You don't have anywhere near as much noise
18:17 from the tyres inside the cabin as I thought you would.
18:20 That means that if you are doing a country drive
18:21 on a course chip road,
18:23 it isn't going to infiltrate as much into the cabin.
18:25 Mitsubishi doesn't have an official zero to 100 times,
18:30 so I'm just gonna stick it up
18:32 against our GPS measurement unit,
18:34 and we'll see how it goes.
18:35 We're gonna go all the way through to 120 as well,
18:37 just to get our overtaking speed.
18:40 There is no sport mode, like I mentioned before,
18:41 but I'll leave it in two-wheel drive high range.
18:43 If I go to four-wheel drive high range,
18:45 we'll simply lose efficiency through the driveline there.
18:47 So let's see how it goes.
18:49 Dial up some revs.
18:50 Feel the back end lifting there.
18:54 Nailed the throttle.
18:55 Alrighty, feels very leisurely.
18:57 I think we're gonna run out of space here.
19:01 Let's see how we go.
19:01 So there's 90,
19:03 100.
19:06 Course it's gonna be close.
19:08 All right.
19:11 We did it, a lot of room to get that up to 120.
19:16 All right, let's see how that went.
19:18 11.72 seconds, which is somewhat leisurely.
19:22 80 to 120 in 9.23 seconds.
19:25 So you just imagine if you are overtaking,
19:28 and you're on 100K now, stretch a road,
19:31 and you flick the indicator on at 80Ks an hour,
19:33 it's gonna take you 10 seconds
19:35 to get up to 120 to overtake,
19:37 which is just a huge amount of time.
19:39 And that's just with Igor and I in the car.
19:40 So you can imagine if the family
19:42 is loaded into the car here and you're towing,
19:44 that's going to be exponentially larger as well.
19:46 So that is worth keeping in mind.
19:48 If you are gonna be doing some serious towing
19:50 or family hauling,
19:50 it is probably worth having a look at a V6 in this segment
19:53 to really give you that leverage that you need.
19:55 Okay, so it is time to do our 100 to zero brake.
19:59 I'm gonna need a decent old run up here
20:01 to get to our braking marker.
20:02 So I had to roll onto the throttle pretty early.
20:06 All right.
20:08 It's 100.
20:11 All right, we've got our flashes come on there.
20:17 Let's have a look at how long that took
20:19 to pull up from 100Ks an hour.
20:21 So 46.45 meters in a time of 3.49 seconds.
20:26 If you do wanna see how the Pajero Sport
20:29 compares to other cars that we've tested before,
20:31 the link is in the description below.
20:33 We've only just started doing this test by the way,
20:34 so it will take us a little while
20:36 to start building up that data, but keep an eye on it.
20:40 And we're gonna cap off our measurements
20:44 with our reverse speed test.
20:45 So here we go.
20:46 So we get up to
20:49 45 kilometers an hour.
21:00 All right, oh, it is time to do
21:01 a little bit of a light off-roading.
21:03 So I'll run you through the basic specs here
21:05 on Pajero Sport.
21:07 It's actually not a bad little setup they've got going here.
21:10 So in terms of ground clearance,
21:11 it's just under 220 millimeters.
21:14 You have an approach angle of 30 degrees
21:16 and a departure angle of 24.2 degrees.
21:19 Approach angle is the angle of the face
21:21 you can approach before you hit anything
21:22 at the front of the car.
21:23 The departure angle is the same, but in reverse,
21:25 you also have a 700 millimeter waiting depth.
21:28 In terms of your four wheel drive hard,
21:29 where I mentioned before when we were driving on road
21:31 that you can use two wheel drive high range
21:32 all the way through to four wheel drive high range
21:35 with the center differential locked
21:37 and also four wheel drive low range
21:39 with the center differential locked.
21:40 You also have a rear differential lock as well
21:43 that only works in low range.
21:45 So, and some driving modes and hill descent control.
21:47 So we're gonna test all of this out now
21:49 and see exactly how well it works.
21:51 Okay, so let's go to our offset mogul.
21:53 First up, we wanna see how well
21:54 the traction control works.
21:55 So I'm gonna leave this in two wheel drive high range
21:58 and we're just gonna see what the traction control does
22:00 when we lift a wheel off the ground at the rear
22:03 and that's going to be the driver's side rear wheel
22:07 as we mount this thing.
22:08 There we go.
22:09 So I'm just gonna lean on the throttle now
22:10 and we'll see how well traction control manages this.
22:13 Just lean a little more into that.
22:16 I can feel that biting and pushing us over.
22:19 That is seriously good.
22:21 Wow, that is impressive.
22:22 I'm gonna kill that parking sensor as well.
22:24 That's awesome.
22:25 So we actually just did a massive Ute comparison
22:28 and the Triton did really well in that as well.
22:31 You can go down to the link in the description below
22:33 if you wanna watch that,
22:34 but it looks like they do use the same four wheel drive
22:37 system and traction control system between the two.
22:40 So pretty impressive there for Pajero Sport.
22:42 Let's go back over our mogul this time.
22:44 We will go in four wheel drive high range.
22:47 We flick this over to four wheel drive high range.
22:50 What we'll do, we'll actually lock
22:52 the center differential as well.
22:54 What that's gonna do is send 50% of torque
22:56 to the front axle, 50% of torque to the rear axle,
22:59 and that will retain traction control as well.
23:01 So we'll just engage all of that,
23:04 wait for that to activate.
23:05 Sometimes it takes a little while here
23:07 in Mitsubishi products to switch
23:09 between these four wheel drive modes.
23:11 There we go, that's finally active
23:12 and you can see it down there in the corner
23:14 and it says four wheel drive high range off the top.
23:16 This is where you can also change between the drive modes.
23:18 So there's gravel, mud, snow, sand, and rock.
23:22 We'll just leave it on gravel for the moment.
23:25 I'm tipping this should actually do pretty well here
23:28 'cause we are sending 50% of torque
23:30 to the front and the rear.
23:31 We also have traction control active as well
23:34 that's gonna manage our wheel slip.
23:36 So the rear wheel is now off the ground,
23:38 the front wheel's off the ground.
23:39 I'm just gonna lean into the throttle
23:41 and we'll see how well it manages this situation.
23:43 I can feel that lifting already.
23:48 Gee, this is seriously good.
23:50 If I compare this to Everest that we tested here last,
23:55 I actually think this performs better than the Everest
23:57 in terms of the four wheel drive system.
23:59 So really impressed with that.
24:01 Let's head over to our hill
24:01 and see how well it does with a bit of climbing.
24:04 Now it is time to attack our hill here.
24:06 So tell you how this is gonna work.
24:08 I'm gonna drop this into low range.
24:11 We'll also flick the rear diff lock on just for fun.
24:14 So over to neutral, push this over
24:16 to four wheel drive low range.
24:19 There we go, that's now active.
24:20 You can see it down there, all the lights are on there
24:22 'cause disabled traction control,
24:23 your crash mitigation, all that sort of stuff.
24:25 I'm gonna push this button here as well.
24:27 That's going to engage our rear diff lock.
24:29 You can see it flashing there.
24:30 It's not gonna activate until we start moving,
24:32 but that kills ABS as well.
24:35 So whole purpose of this is for us to try climbing it once
24:39 just on its own, then what we're gonna do
24:40 is come back around and climb it,
24:42 but stop in the middle and then take off again
24:44 just to see how well all of those traction systems work.
24:47 So rear diff lock is now active.
24:49 Love that there's paddles here as well.
24:52 It means that I have full control over everything
24:54 and can quickly nip through the gears if I need to.
24:57 Not really getting anywhere there,
25:02 so I'm just gonna try and lean onto the throttle.
25:04 Yeah, we're not going anywhere, so, hmm, okay.
25:14 So what I might do is go back down
25:16 and we'll try just with a tiny bit more pace
25:19 before I dig too much of a hole in our hill.
25:22 I see a hole there.
25:23 We're gonna have to fix that a little later on.
25:25 All right, here we go.
25:26 All right.
25:29 All right, with a bit more pace, it's fine.
25:35 All right, we're at the top there.
25:38 Our mud bog is completely dried out, but we made it up.
25:41 So yeah, it just did need a little bit more pace.
25:43 It got stuck and wasn't sure of itself
25:46 when we came to a full stop there.
25:47 So, all right, let's kill our rear diff lock here
25:51 and I want to test out our hill descent control.
25:54 So for that, I'm gonna flick this over to,
25:57 we'll drive high range, wait for that to activate.
26:01 There it is there.
26:01 We'll engage hill descent control.
26:04 Engage hill descent control.
26:07 There it is.
26:07 So creep over the hill here.
26:09 Actually, we can use our cameras here to have a,
26:11 the camera is totally useless.
26:14 It's so dark and the image just makes no sense to me.
26:20 So it is a little bit pointless there, but anyway.
26:23 Tip it over the edge.
26:24 It's actually not too bad.
26:30 It got a little bit of a runaway there,
26:32 but it all sort of gradually descended
26:34 without too many dramas there.
26:35 So that was pretty good.
26:37 All right, let's head back to our hill
26:39 and we'll try this one more time.
26:42 Okay, take two.
26:43 So I'm gonna pop this back into low range
26:46 with the rear diff locked.
26:48 Okay, low range is active.
26:50 We'll turn the rear diff lock on.
26:51 Okay, I'm gonna come to a stop again
26:54 and see if it'll climb.
26:57 Obviously, I've dug a big hole there,
26:59 so I'm just gonna try stopping a little ahead of the hole.
27:02 It's about there somewhere.
27:04 Foot on the brake.
27:05 I'll just load onto the throttle.
27:07 Oh, that's better.
27:10 That is better.
27:11 Okay, cool, there you go.
27:12 So take two, it actually worked much better that time.
27:15 It didn't, it didn't really,
27:17 it didn't sit there and bog itself down.
27:20 So it must've just been like a loose patch
27:22 that we're on there.
27:22 So I'm glad it did make it up.
27:24 Just as a reference, again, with the Fort Everest,
27:27 Fort Everest couldn't get up there when it came to a stop.
27:29 It just sat there spinning its wheels.
27:30 So yeah, pretty impressive there
27:32 that we're able to climb that without too many dramas.
27:36 All right, let's have a look at how the Pajero Sport
27:39 goes over some rocks.
27:41 So 220 mil ground clearance.
27:43 It's not a huge amount,
27:45 but I've left it here in low range
27:47 and I'm just gonna ride the brake with the throttle
27:50 and just creep over some of this stuff.
27:52 This is actually where the soft suspension in Pajero Sport
27:55 is probably going to come in handy,
27:57 just 'cause it isn't going to throw us around too much.
27:59 And it is actually pretty comfortable so far.
28:02 These rocks are just all over the shop.
28:06 And when you do fall into some of these holes,
28:08 it does actually pay to have a super soft suspension setup.
28:13 And it is worth noting here as well
28:14 that this is where those rock sliders
28:16 are gonna come in handy
28:17 if you do start bottoming out on those side steps.
28:20 Really is going to chew them apart pretty quickly.
28:22 But yeah, look, I'm pretty happy with that.
28:26 It is very comfortable over here,
28:27 very manageable and controllable
28:29 and little fuss as well.
28:32 So yeah, that's great.
28:34 So I mentioned before that Pajero Sport
28:36 has a 700 mil wading depth
28:37 and this is where we would go through our river.
28:40 Unfortunately at the moment, it is so dry.
28:44 It has been really hot here the past few weeks.
28:46 And as a result of that,
28:48 there is barely any water in here at all.
28:50 So this is going to be the weakest water crossing
28:55 you have ever seen in your life.
28:56 But I thought let's just go through it anyway
28:58 until we figure out a solution here
28:59 of getting more water into here
29:02 without it physically falling out of the sky.
29:04 Yes, as discussed,
29:07 there is barely any water in here at all.
29:10 Oh my God.
29:13 I'm actually fairly certain Eagle's N3
29:15 could fit through here without any problems.
29:17 Anyway.
29:18 So Pajero Sport off-road, it's actually pretty impressive.
29:20 It does everything it says on the box.
29:22 Traction control system works well.
29:24 And as far as I can tell,
29:25 it's as capable as something like the new Everest,
29:27 which I think is a pretty impressive feat
29:29 for a car that's this old.
29:30 (car engine roaring)
29:33 So the Pajero Sport, look,
29:37 it is definitely starting to show its age.
29:40 The interior feels very dated.
29:41 The engine needs a whole lot more punch,
29:43 especially if you are gonna be carrying a load
29:46 and towing stuff,
29:47 and the handling needs a big improvement as well.
29:49 I'm hoping that with the next generation of this,
29:51 they can really throw the kitchen sink at it
29:53 and really go to town on it.
29:54 At the moment though,
29:55 it's priced at a level where you can kind of get away
29:58 with those shortcomings
30:00 because you aren't paying as much
30:01 as some of the competitors.
30:02 But if Mitsubishi plans on going premium
30:04 with the next generation of this,
30:05 they really need to make sure that it has the contents
30:08 and the drivability that you'd expect
30:09 from a vehicle with that price tag.
30:11 So yeah, look, it's really impressive off-road,
30:13 but I think probably the engine just lets it down
30:15 a little bit when it is driven on road with a full load.
30:17 So let me know in the comment section below,
30:19 have you bought a Pajero Sport?
30:21 What's it like to live with?
30:23 Are they cheap to operate?
30:24 I'm really keen for your feedback.
