00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. Mitsubishi has just taken the wraps off the all-new Triton.
00:04 Today I'm going to run you through the interior, the exterior, the engines,
00:07 what it means for Australia, and most importantly, all of the cool stuff that is launching with the new Triton.
00:12 By the way, I'm actually in Thailand right now with the new Triton,
00:16 and that video with a walkaround of the new Triton is going to go live after this video goes live as well.
00:22 So keep an eye on the comment section below, subscribe to the channel, hit the bell icon.
00:25 That's going to tell you as soon as that video goes live.
00:28 Let's get stuck right into it.
00:30 Now, this is all very fresh to me, so I've got papers here in front of me.
00:34 I've got our iPad as well, which has all the pictures,
00:37 and I'm going to be drawing on it with my stylus as I sort of run you through everything.
00:41 So let's kick off with the exterior, and we'll start off with the biggest change here, which is the size of the vehicle.
00:48 So Mitsubishi has realised what is going on in the segment here,
00:52 and they've extended things like the wheelbase, which is the distance there between the wheels.
00:56 That's increased by 130mm, which is a big jump forward.
01:00 The body length has increased by 15mm, which is the distance from the front to the end.
01:05 We've also had an increase in body width as well,
01:08 and you're going to notice that when you're following this on the road,
01:10 it's going to look much wider from the front there,
01:13 and you'll really sort of notice that it has a bigger presence on the road there in terms of the way that it looks.
01:18 Tray length has increased as well, so that's now 35mm longer too.
01:22 Bigger tray length is going to mean ease of loading things into the tray,
01:26 so it means you're going to be able to get stuff in.
01:28 It's also deeper now as well.
01:30 They've increased the depth of that tray to allow for extra loading of items too,
01:34 which I think is all very good news.
01:36 So let's have a look at the exterior.
01:38 This is what the new Triton looks like.
01:40 I'm keen for your feedback.
01:42 First impressions, let me know in the comments section below.
01:44 Do you like the look of it?
01:45 It's kind of stuff that we've seen on other Mitsubishi variants in the past,
01:49 which is that split LED light design.
01:51 So you can see there that those LED lights are split from the running lights up the top there.
01:55 There's a fog light down the bottom there as well,
01:58 and they've got this black cladded section that sits in the top there too.
02:02 Separated radar beam there from the Mitsubishi logo,
02:05 and then Mitsubishi lettering sort of sticking into that front section of the tray.
02:10 Parking sensors down here too, so front and rear parking sensors.
02:13 You can see these wheel arches are kind of a reflective material there,
02:17 and it's really kind of gone down the path of making this look a whole lot more rugged than it used to be,
02:23 which I think is all part of the appeal of these dual cab utes these days.
02:27 If you have a look at it from the side profile as well,
02:29 you can see a bit more detail there around the back end with how they've done those wheel arches.
02:33 It is interesting, there is a cutout there on the wheel arch for the fuel filler.
02:37 It's an enormous fuel filler, and I think it's obviously a design thing that they've gone with there,
02:42 that it cuts into there. I think it kind of looks okay.
02:44 This looks like it has plastic sidesteps, similar to what we've seen in other dual cab utes in this segment.
02:50 It's one of the things I kind of complain about as well, if this is off-road capable,
02:52 you want those stronger sidesteps, you want something like a Ranger Raptor,
02:55 where it looks like it's indestructible, it isn't going to fall apart the second you touch a rock.
02:59 You have visible roof rails there, black, and then also this sailplane down the back there too,
03:05 with Mitsubishi written on there.
03:06 Indicators there in the wing mirrors.
03:09 Have a look at this though, if we zoom into this,
03:12 I can see drum brakes, and if this is the highest trim level,
03:16 it is really surprising to me that Mitsubishi has launched a brand new car on a brand new platform,
03:21 and they've gone down the path of drum brakes instead of disc brakes,
03:24 like most of the other competitors in this segment that are starting to charge a bit more for their vehicles.
03:28 So, that is interesting.
03:29 But I do like these side design elements, you can see that stamping there on the side of the vehicle,
03:35 a little bit of a taper there on that rear window,
03:37 and given that there is more wheelbase here, it should also mean that there's more room inside the cabin too,
03:42 which is always a good thing.
03:44 So, let's have a look at the back of the Triton.
03:47 Okay, so I've immediately spotted something there, have a look at that.
03:50 So, that is your reverse camera.
03:52 It's not in line with where the tow bar is going to be.
03:55 It's one of the gripes that we had when we did our big ute test, when we were loading a trailer on.
04:00 Having an offset camera means the guidelines don't sit central to where the trailer is getting connected.
04:05 We've seen in Ranger, for example, they've put the camera right centre there,
04:08 so when you are loading a trailer, it is much easier to connect, and there's no sort of issues there.
04:14 I do like this tapering on the rear lights there, they do look like they're halogen.
04:18 It doesn't appear like they're going down the path of LED in the back there.
04:22 Again, we'll wait till we see that in person to confirm that,
04:24 but a little bit disappointing with them sort of going down that path.
04:28 Have a look at this though.
04:29 So, Nissan with the Navara, they actually removed this plastic cap along the top of that tailgate,
04:34 and if you are actually using this as a trades vehicle and have stuff sticking out the back and it's resting on that tray,
04:40 you are going to be doing damage to that paintwork,
04:42 so it is good to see that they have that plastic lip on there to prevent damage to your tray's paintwork as you're doing it.
04:49 Also like this as well, we saw this on the Ford Ranger.
04:52 They've integrated the stoplight onto the actual tailgate.
04:54 Now, the big benefit of this is that if you do fit a canopy, your stoplight was previously up here,
04:59 and it meant that if you did fit a canopy, you don't see a stoplight anymore,
05:02 and you've got to make sure that the canopy has a stoplight.
05:04 So, by putting it in there, it's always going to be visible, which I think is great news.
05:08 Down the back here, one of the spec changes is 3.5-tonne brake towing capacity,
05:11 so it's gone up from 3,100 kilos, and that will mean that the engine is beefier as well,
05:16 and I'll get to the engine in just a second.
05:18 But look, I think the rear of this is sort of pretty resolved.
05:21 I do like this orange colour. It stands out pretty nicely, which is cool.
05:25 We do have another spec to show you here.
05:27 So, this is the high-level grade.
05:28 That one that you first saw was the highest level,
05:31 and you can see here, instead of having the black sections at the front,
05:33 they've gone down the path of chrome.
05:35 So, that kind of is a little flashier down the front there,
05:38 but same story again, radar sensor there, parking sensors as well.
05:42 Different wheel design, and also no visible cladding there over the wheel arches.
05:46 There is just that body-coloured setup just here.
05:48 There is no huge plastic cladding there, but similar side steps as well,
05:53 and indicators built into the wing mirror too.
05:55 Aerial up the front here, so stubby sort of aerial,
05:58 similar to what we've seen on the Ford Ranger, and chrome mirror caps as well.
06:02 Jump to the back of the high-level trim here to give you a look at that.
06:06 So, unsurprisingly, same location there for the camera, more chrome there as well.
06:11 Triton badge off to the side, Mitsubishi there,
06:14 and then sort of like a grey silvery look there to the actual rear tray of the vehicle.
06:20 So, yeah, look, it's, I don't know, what do you reckon about the design?
06:24 Let me know what you think in the comments section below.
06:25 Do you think they've done enough with this, given it is a brand new vehicle?
06:29 Or do you think they could have done a little bit more there with the design to make it work?
06:32 So, let me know what you reckon in the comments section below.
06:34 Okey-dokey, so this is what the interior looks like.
06:37 So, we're going to start off with the high-level trim.
06:39 So, that is one down from the highest level.
06:42 Obviously, we don't have the exact model grades just yet,
06:44 but it gives you an indication of where you're going to be sitting in that range.
06:47 So, you've got two different setups you can have here.
06:50 So, screen in the centre there is a nine-inch display.
06:54 This looks very familiar to what we've seen with things like the Outlander.
06:57 You've got shortcuts down the bottom there.
06:59 You've also got buttons on the bottom section of the screen.
07:02 Physical knobs as well, and it's a touchscreen too.
07:05 If this is anything like the Outlander, it's going to come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
07:09 Down here as well, thank goodness, they actually have physical switches for things like climate control.
07:14 When we've driven things like a new Amarok, for example,
07:17 you've got to dive through screens to do even basic functions like putting it on recycle there.
07:21 So, it's good to see they've thought of that and kept everything in that position.
07:24 I can see the starter button down there as well, which is good news.
07:28 The steering wheel, yeah, look pretty straightforward design,
07:31 but again, buttons are easy to access.
07:33 Everything sort of makes a fair bit of sense there.
07:36 Nothing sort of too out of the ordinary.
07:37 And then if we jump into the actual cluster there ahead of the driver,
07:41 I'll show you what that looks like.
07:43 So, you can see there you've got a smaller, I think it's a seven-inch display ahead of the driver there.
07:47 So, that's going to give you critical functions like your trip computer and that kind of thing.
07:51 Obviously, not a big display like we're seeing on things like Ranger and Amarok.
07:56 So, this is a step back from some of these other vehicles in the segment
08:00 that are launching with those bigger screens.
08:01 So, it is interesting to see Mitsubishi taking that slightly more conservative approach
08:05 instead of throwing the kitchen sink at this in terms of their infotainment setup
08:10 because you've got to think of stuff like Outlander that actually has a full digital display in the background there.
08:14 So, they have that technology available to them.
08:16 Why they haven't included it here is kind of a strange move, I reckon.
08:20 What else have we got here?
08:21 So, Super Select makes a return,
08:23 and I'll run you through that in just a second in terms of how that's going to work when it's paired to the engine.
08:28 There's new drive modes there as well.
08:30 And then you can see hill descent control switch there.
08:33 A lot of piano black.
08:35 Hopefully, it doesn't look nasty in person, but you know what my feelings are on piano black.
08:40 Jumping up to the highest trim level.
08:42 So, this is the bee's knees when it comes to the Triton range.
08:46 Immediately up the top there, I can see sunglasses holder, which is great.
08:49 You've got auto-dimming rear vision mirror.
08:51 If we jump down here, have a look at this.
08:53 We have cup holders that pop out of there, which is good news.
08:56 Textured material here on this top glove box.
09:01 So, they've gone for that softer approach, making this look and feel a little more premium.
09:05 Another glove box down the bottom there as well.
09:08 What else have we got here?
09:09 12-volt outlet here.
09:10 I did spy just before some USB connections behind here, USB-C and USB-A.
09:17 Air vents up the top here.
09:19 And then if we jump over to the side, you can see they've gone with that faux carbon
09:23 fiber look over there as well, which is interesting to see.
09:27 And then the softer padded sections over here on the door too.
09:31 What other views have we got available to us here?
09:33 That steering wheel actually looks pretty cool as well.
09:35 It's like a blue sort of leather material as opposed to being black.
09:39 So, it definitely looks different to the gray just beneath it.
09:41 Now, these seats look interesting.
09:43 Have a look at this.
09:44 They've got like an Alcantara finish there, which I love the look of.
09:48 And then on the sides as well with that orange leather setup.
09:51 So, pretty sort of impressive there.
09:53 Oh, that's interesting.
09:54 Physical handbrake.
09:55 So, they haven't gone down the path of the electrically actuated handbrake, which is,
09:59 again, different to other vehicles in the segment.
10:01 If you look at Amarok and Ranger, they've gone down the path of that.
10:03 And I suspect the new generation of the Hilux will go down the path of an electrically actuated
10:08 park brake as well.
10:09 I'll be curious to see if on the wing mirror they actually have a USB outlet like Ford
10:14 has fitted to Ranger.
10:15 Now, it doesn't look like it, so you can't see anything up the top there.
10:18 So, it's just a sort of a pretty straightforward setup.
10:21 There is a section up here for an SOS switch though, which indicates they're going to have
10:25 that remote connectivity system with an embedded SIM within the car.
10:29 I've also just noticed this too.
10:31 That's a bit disappointing.
10:32 So, they've gone down the path of using a recirculated air system for the second row.
10:37 What other brands do is plumb air vents into the back seat for the passengers.
10:41 They get fresh, cooled air, whereas this actually just takes air from inside the cabin and then
10:46 spits it back out for your rear passengers.
10:48 They're going to be getting the same air.
10:49 It won't be fresh air like you would sort of expect it to be, which is a little disappointing.
10:55 I think they could have perhaps gone to a little bit more effort there to make that
10:57 happen.
10:58 I'll be curious to see how much legroom we actually have in the second row when we do
11:01 jump inside it.
11:02 And just a quick shot here of the back seat.
11:04 So, you can see centre armrest there with two cup holders.
11:08 No grips in there for drinks, so you're just going to pop them in and one looks deeper
11:11 than the other.
11:12 But that seat texture continues in the back there too, which is cool with that.
11:16 Ribbing as well to keep you nice and comfortable.
11:19 And you can see here in the back as well, you've got a USB-C, USB-A and a 12-volt outlet,
11:23 but no air vents featured within that top section.
11:26 Okay, let's run through engines.
11:29 And for Australia, we are probably just going to get the one set of engines.
11:33 We don't know exactly just yet what we're going to be receiving, but it's a newly developed
11:37 ladder frame, so 65% greater cross-sectional area than the previous model.
11:41 Has a bending rigidity of 40% and a torsional rigidity of 60%.
11:45 I'm not exactly sure what that means.
11:47 Typically, they would quote numbers that are stronger than the previous generation, but
11:50 this just says it's a bending rigidity of 40%, so I don't exactly know what that means.
11:55 But the engine that you're looking at here, they've called it the 4N16.
12:00 It's a clean diesel engine and it comes in three different outputs.
12:04 The key number though for Australia is 2.4-litre twin turbocharged diesel, so similar engine
12:11 to the Navara.
12:12 150 kilowatts of power, 470 newton-metres of torque.
12:18 So it is already launching down on things like Hilux and Ranger, both of which offer
12:23 500 newton-metres of torque.
12:26 So it is interesting to see that they haven't really gone for anything higher than that.
12:30 It also uses six-speed automatic transmission.
12:33 Manual will be available as well down the track, but for the moment it will just be
12:37 launching with the six-speed auto.
12:39 Can see under the bonnet there as well, you've got a single battery just here.
12:42 Doesn't appear there's any room there for a second battery under the bonnet.
12:45 All of these spaces are already taken, so I don't think you can fit a secondary battery
12:50 under there.
12:51 Other engines that are going to launch globally with Triton, another two sets of power outputs,
12:56 35 kilowatts and 430 newton-metres, and finally 110 kilowatts and 330 newton-metres.
13:04 They all have a VG turbocharger, so I think that's a variable geometry turbocharger.
13:09 They haven't expanded on exactly what that means.
13:11 The engine here and the changes to the chassis are the reason this has now been able to go
13:15 up to a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity.
13:18 In terms of other features that they've added to this, you've got your Super Select 4-wheel
13:22 drive system.
13:23 You can see here that we're going to see a torque-sensing limited-slip differential.
13:26 I think that's a braking-type system.
13:29 Also Super Select 2 4-wheel drive system.
13:32 Now that system's great because it allows you to run the vehicle in 2-wheel drive high
13:34 range, 4-wheel drive high range on sealed surfaces, 4-wheel drive high range with centre
13:40 diff locked for unsealed surfaces, and also 4-wheel drive low range.
13:45 The good news as well is that when it is set up to its 4-wheel drive high range mode, it's
13:49 40% torque to the front, 60% torque to the rear.
13:52 It gives you that rear-wheel drive feel even when it is in its 4-wheel drive mode.
13:56 They've also now included seven drive modes, which includes on-road modes, so that's an
13:59 increase over the four off-road modes that they had previously.
14:03 So along with normal mode that's available in 4-wheel drive mode, 2-wheel drive offers
14:07 eco, 4H offers gravel and snow, and then your 4-wheel drive high range lock centre diff
14:13 and low range also offer a raft of different 4-wheel drive modes there.
14:16 It also comes with rear differential lock.
14:18 We don't know yet whether that's engaged or able to be engaged in 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel
14:23 drive high range.
14:24 I suspect this is one of the types that is only going to work either in 4-wheel drive
14:27 low range or the 4-wheel drive high range with centre diff locked as well.
14:31 Now what does all this mean for safety when it comes to driving the new Triton?
14:35 So it comes with a class-first driver monitoring system.
14:37 Typically that's a little camera that watches what you're doing and warns you if you're
14:41 about to fall asleep or get distracted behind the wheel.
14:44 You've got forward AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection along with a junction assist.
14:49 You have rear AEB as well which is excellent news.
14:52 Blind spot monitoring.
14:53 They're also fitting Active Yaw Control and Adaptive Cruise Control to automatic transmission
14:57 models.
14:58 Active Yaw Control basically allows the vehicle to brake individual wheels as it's going around
15:02 a corner.
15:03 We've tested this before in other Mitsubishi products and it actually works really well
15:05 so I'm excited to see how this feels behind the wheel of the Triton 2.
15:09 Now let's talk about Australia and what this means for the Australian market.
15:13 So the vehicle goes on sale here in Australia from February 2024.
15:20 Basically production will commence for the Australian market in Thailand from December.
15:24 It'll arrive in February 2024 and be available to order.
15:28 The first market that this goes on sale in is Thailand and it's available to buy immediately
15:33 there.
15:34 Australia's going to get one, two, three, four, five different grades.
15:36 We've got entry-level GLX which is a 4x2, GLX Plus which is a 4x4, GLX which is a 4x4
15:43 and GLS which is a 4x4 and GSR which is a 4x4.
15:49 All of those vehicles will come with the same diesel engine and all of those will come with
15:53 six-speed automatic transmission.
15:55 It will launch initially with club, cab and double cab.
15:59 Later on we're going to see cab chassis and also manual available.
16:03 In addition to that, the GLS is going to be available with a leather option package as
16:08 well for the Australian market.
16:10 There's also been a lot of work done here in Australia on the next generation Triton
16:15 as well.
16:16 They've done a whole lot of testing in Australia in terms of load management and also off-roading
16:20 as well.
16:21 We're hoping that that means this will actually be quite suitable to the Australian market
16:25 and they've hot weather tested it, got the ride set up so it actually competes nicely
16:29 with its other peers in this segment.
16:31 I'm looking forward to seeing how that goes.
16:33 That has been your first look at the Mitsubishi Triton.
16:36 Do remember that I'm actually in Thailand right now filming a walk around with the actual
16:40 car.
16:41 When that goes live, you're going to see a card on the screen and also a link in the
16:44 description below that will take you to that video so you can check that out and see what
16:48 my initial reaction to this is in person.
16:51 What do you think about this?
16:52 Let me know in the comments section below.
16:53 Obviously, I haven't seen it yet in person but 470Nm, rear drum brakes, kind of the headline
16:59 numbers there aren't amazing me straight out of the bat.
17:01 This is a brand new car.
17:02 I would have thought they would try and go head to head with things like the new Ranger
17:05 but we will wait to see pricing for the Australian market and also how this actually feels behind
17:10 the wheel when we finally get a chance to drive it.
17:13 I'm super keen for your feedback though.
17:14 Are you a Triton customer?

17:19 What do you think of this?
17:20 Do you think they've done enough with it?
17:22 Are you excited by that top spec grade that has the wheel arch cladding and all that sort
17:26 of fun stuff?
17:27 Let me know down in the comments section below.
17:28 If you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel, press the bell icon that will
17:31 notify you when we do get hands on with the car and when other details on the new Triton
17:36 go live.
17:37 But until next time, take it easy.
