MotorTranscript
00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 The Toyota Hilux, it is one of the most dependable utes
00:04 and it is the best-selling vehicle in Australia.
00:06 That's right, they sell more of these
00:08 than anything else on the market.
00:10 Now, this has recently been updated.
00:11 This is the top-spec SR5
00:13 and it is the new cab chassis variant.
00:16 It's priced at just under $59,000
00:19 and it sits below the special editions,
00:21 the Rugged, the Rugged X and the Rogue.
00:23 And it competes with cars like the Ford Ranger,
00:25 the Volkswagen Amarok, you name it.
00:26 There are so many competitors in this segment.
00:29 Today, we're going to do a detailed review
00:31 of the new Hilux SR5.
00:33 If you do wanna skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:35 you can use the time codes up on the screen,
00:38 or if you're on YouTube,
00:38 just scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:41 And if you haven't done so already,
00:42 make sure you hit subscribe and press the bell icon.
00:44 That's gonna tell you every single time
00:46 we drive something new.
00:47 Righto, let's talk exterior.
00:49 You've got seven different colors to choose from
00:51 and all but white is an additional $600.
00:54 Let's have a look at this front end.
00:55 So, you'll notice there has been
00:57 some minor styling changes here.
00:58 There's lashings of chrome, giant Toyota emblem.
01:01 It has matured in terms of the design,
01:03 but it still looks fairly aggressive
01:04 and you still can get a whole stack
01:06 of Australian-developed accessories
01:08 that attach to the front of it as well.
01:10 And they're compatible with things like the airbags
01:11 and all the safety systems.
01:13 You'll notice as well with the headlights,
01:14 these have changed.
01:15 So, while the previous, I guess,
01:17 pre-facelift Hilux was LED headlights,
01:20 this retains the LED headlights,
01:21 but there are other LED strips in there now,
01:23 including LED indicators.
01:25 So, this looks really cool at nighttime.
01:27 Down here, again, you've got like a stylized cluster
01:30 with a fog light integrated down the bottom.
01:32 Jump around to the side.
01:33 We have a set of 18-inch alloy wheels
01:36 with highway terrain tires.
01:38 Quite a nice design.
01:39 I like this sort of shiny gloss look on the outside
01:42 and then the black on the inside.
01:43 You'll notice that the SR5, yes,
01:45 it is the top-spec model of the normal vehicles,
01:47 but you can jump up to Rugged, Rugged X and Rogue
01:51 if you do want different styling highlights
01:53 and then extra features as well.
01:54 And they come with their own set of wheels.
01:56 So, I do like the way that looks.
01:58 You've got an indicator built into here
01:59 with a little bit of chrome on the top.
02:01 You get sidesteps, privacy glass,
02:03 and then come around to the back.
02:05 Now, this is a new variant to the Hilux range
02:08 and it's allowed them to price the SR5 cheaper.
02:10 And that's because it doesn't have a style side rear on it.
02:12 This is sold as a chassis,
02:14 and then you add on all the bits that you want to it,
02:17 including things like your tow bar.
02:18 It has a three and a half ton braked towing capacity.
02:21 And then you'll notice here as well,
02:22 the difference with the style side vehicle,
02:24 you have LED taillights built into them
02:26 and they look quite nice as well.
02:27 They follow the trend of the front end,
02:29 whereas this is quite a basic setup
02:31 and it means you're not really sort of getting
02:32 that nice looking rear end.
02:34 Kind of makes me wonder why you'd bother
02:36 getting the chassis version of this
02:37 if you didn't want the nicer version looking of the Hilux.
02:40 So, let me know in the comments below,
02:41 should they have done a chassis variant for the SR5
02:43 or just kept that for lower end models?
02:46 But one of the advantages of not having that style side rear
02:50 is that you get more payload capacity.
02:51 So, this has just over 1100 kilograms of payload capacity.
02:55 So, this is the vehicle that you want
02:56 if you are quite serious about hauling things in the tray,
02:59 as opposed to it just looking good.
03:01 Okay, so we're inside the Hilux
03:03 and we'll start off with the key.
03:05 This is what it looks like.
03:05 You've got lock, unlock, panic,
03:08 and then the Toyota symbol down the bottom.
03:10 Lashing of chrome there as well.
03:11 And then on the back, it just says Hilux.
03:13 This is a proximity sensing key.
03:15 So, you just leave that in your pocket,
03:17 grab the door handle, it's got a little button on it,
03:19 and then you have a push button start
03:20 just next to the steering wheel.
03:21 Okay, what about styling?
03:22 Look, I don't think this is dated that well.
03:24 This ute hasn't been out that long
03:26 and this is already starting to look quite old.
03:28 They didn't really make too much of a change here
03:30 with the facelift of the Hilux.
03:31 So, this will still be around for a little while longer.
03:33 I'll take you through the changes
03:34 on the infotainment system shortly.
03:36 But just in terms of materials,
03:38 this may look soft with this fake stitching built into it,
03:41 but everything around this cabin
03:43 is really sort of rough and tumble.
03:45 Now, obviously with dual cab utes,
03:46 they are work vehicles.
03:47 They want them to be, I guess,
03:49 future-proof in the sense of durability.
03:51 But at the end of the day,
03:52 utes at this end of the price bracket
03:54 are starting to become far more premium.
03:56 The new D-MAX is a perfect example.
03:57 There's a lot of soft touch materials
03:59 and that's shared with the BT50.
04:00 This feels like it's yesteryear's ute
04:03 and they haven't really got with the times
04:04 in terms of making it feel a bit more premium
04:06 for the money that you're spending.
04:07 What about the touch points?
04:08 Well, they are soft, thank goodness,
04:10 here and here as well.
04:11 That's cloth and we have tested all of those touch points
04:15 with our durometer.
04:16 So, if you wanna see how this car performs
04:18 against other vehicles in this segment,
04:20 just scroll down to the description
04:21 where you'll find a link.
04:22 Now, what about build quality?
04:23 We'll do our shape test.
04:25 That sort of flexes the rest of that center console,
04:27 but for the most part, this feels pretty good.
04:29 I haven't really heard any complaints
04:30 from Hilux owners about build quality.
04:32 So, let me know in the comments below,
04:34 do you own an older Hilux?
04:35 Have you had any dramas with it?
04:37 Let me know if it's still kicking about.
04:39 Okay, let's talk infotainment.
04:40 Toyota has updated the infotainment system.
04:43 It's now an eight-inch infotainment unit
04:45 that is touchscreen
04:46 and also has these buttons on the flanks.
04:48 Now, if you do want a detailed review
04:50 of this infotainment system,
04:51 you can click up here.
04:52 Okay, I'll just give you a brief overview.
04:54 So, you get satellite navigation
04:55 built into the infotainment system.
04:58 Works okay, it's not too bad.
04:59 Over on the steering wheel,
05:00 you have voice recognition
05:01 that allows you to call contacts
05:02 and also enter addresses.
05:04 Works okay, not amazing, but it does the job.
05:07 The big integration here, though,
05:08 that changes this for the Hilux is smartphone mirroring.
05:11 So, now it includes both Apple CarPlay
05:13 and Android Auto using a cord.
05:15 So, I'll show you what Apple CarPlay looks like.
05:17 Pretty smooth integration,
05:18 takes up the entire screen and works fairly seamlessly.
05:21 Let's have a look at Android Auto.
05:22 Another nice integration,
05:23 takes up the entire screen.
05:25 That all looks fairly well.
05:26 Let's look at Maps.
05:27 That all works well as well.
05:28 Keep in mind as well
05:29 that with the voice recognition system,
05:30 when your phone is paired to smartphone mirroring,
05:33 you're able to push commands through to the phone,
05:34 which will make voice recognition
05:36 a whole lot more accurate.
05:37 You also have a six-speaker sound system.
05:39 And then in terms of audio,
05:40 you have AM/FM/DAB+.
05:42 On the connectivity front, one USB port.
05:44 So, if you do have your phone plugged in
05:46 for smartphone mirroring,
05:48 you can't really charge any other devices
05:50 or do anything else,
05:51 which is a bit of a shame.
05:52 You have a 12-volt outlet there,
05:54 and then extra connectivity in the backseat.
05:56 Now, moving on to safety,
05:57 you get autonomous emergency braking
06:00 that has vulnerable road user detection.
06:02 You have radar cruise control
06:04 with a lane-keeping assistant.
06:06 Now, keep in mind,
06:07 because this retains the hydraulic steering rack,
06:09 the lane-keeping assistant
06:10 is the type that pulses the brakes.
06:12 So, it can be a little bit weird
06:15 because it feels like it's swerving back into the lane
06:17 as opposed to being a gradual system,
06:18 which is what you get with cars
06:20 that have electrically-assisted steering racks.
06:22 You can switch it off, though,
06:23 just with one push of that button,
06:25 which is really good.
06:25 Now, one thing we did notice,
06:27 and I don't know if this is linked to the safety systems,
06:30 but randomly up here,
06:31 there's like a set of demisters
06:33 that are sort of built into this section of the screen.
06:37 I don't know what they do.
06:38 And I actually pulled this off before.
06:41 It's like a little cable that goes into there.
06:43 Let me know in the comments section below,
06:44 do you know what this does?
06:46 I'm very curious.
06:47 Is it the antenna for the radio?
06:49 What is it exactly?
06:50 Let me know in the comments section below.
06:51 Okay, now the last thing
06:52 that I wanna talk about here is parking.
06:54 Now, with these vehicles in and around work sites,
06:57 in and around family homes, and that sort of thing,
06:59 the chassis version of the SR5,
07:01 despite being like the top-spec model,
07:04 has no parking sensors at all.
07:05 So, no front, no rear parking sensors,
07:07 and even worse, there's no reverse camera.
07:10 So, when you put it into reverse, nothing happens.
07:12 So, you're kind of left on your own here,
07:14 and it really surprises me that in 2020
07:17 and moving on to 2021,
07:18 there can still be a brand new car on the market
07:20 that does not have parking sensors,
07:22 especially a vehicle like this
07:23 that's going to be in sort of urban areas
07:26 where there's lots of pedestrians and kids and stuff around.
07:28 So, let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.
07:31 Would you just install them yourself,
07:32 or should they be standard?
07:33 Moving on to practicality, and we'll start with storage.
07:36 Where are you gonna put your phone?
07:38 Phone can easily live there or there.
07:40 There's no wireless phone charging,
07:41 but there's plenty of storage space for it.
07:43 So, big tick to Toyota for that.
07:46 What about your bottles of Dairice coffee?
07:49 You can fit them in here.
07:50 The other great thing is something they've carried over
07:53 from previous generations of the Hilux,
07:55 and that is the bottle holder in front of the air vent.
07:58 So, if it is a stinking hot day
08:00 and you've got yourself a nice cool drink,
08:01 you can pop that in front of your air conditioning ducts,
08:03 or if you've got a coffee in the morning
08:05 and you have the heater on, it'll keep it kind of warm.
08:07 Then you also have storage inside the door for the bottle,
08:10 plus other odds and ends.
08:11 You have a center console here.
08:12 It's pretty deep, showing how big that is.
08:15 And on top of that, there's also a power outlet in there.
08:18 Glove box down at the bottom.
08:20 It'll fit your bottles and other bits and pieces,
08:23 but then also a chilled box at the top.
08:26 Yet another storage space to put your drinks
08:28 to keep them cool.
08:29 And then sunglasses holder up here.
08:31 Let's talk comfort.
08:32 The SR5 comes standard with cloth seats.
08:34 They actually look pretty cool.
08:35 Kind of a different design to what you'd expect
08:37 in a dual cab ute.
08:38 You can get a pack for $2,500 that adds leather,
08:41 heated seats, electric seat adjustment.
08:43 So that is probably worth considering
08:45 if you do want a little bit of lux in here.
08:47 But for the most part, these are quite comfortable,
08:49 all manually adjusted.
08:50 The steering wheel sits nicely in the hand
08:53 and the driving position actually feels quite good.
08:55 All of this stuff is really easy to reach too.
08:57 So from that point of view, it's all very straightforward.
09:00 Okay, let's talk second row.
09:01 Before I get in here, let me show you what you can do here.
09:03 So the seats fold up, they don't fall down.
09:07 And when you do fold them up,
09:08 Eagle, can you grab the handle on that side?
09:11 It reveals some storage space beneath the seats.
09:14 So room for a jack in there
09:16 and then room for a couple of bits and pieces
09:18 in here as well.
09:19 And then they just drop down.
09:21 All right, let's climb in.
09:23 Grab handle there as well, which is handy.
09:26 Okay, so you have hooks here in the back of the seats.
09:31 You have air vents as well, which is good for the SR5.
09:34 What about room?
09:35 There ain't much.
09:37 Knees are right into that seat.
09:39 My seat is pretty far back.
09:41 Admittedly, but at the end of the day,
09:43 there really isn't a great deal of room there.
09:44 Toe room is compromised and headroom is okay.
09:48 But if you're taller,
09:49 you're probably gonna be rubbing against the roof there.
09:51 Mat pockets in the back of the seats.
09:53 And then you have a center armrest with two cup holders.
09:57 Your bottles can also go in the door.
10:00 Little slot for them down there.
10:01 You have ISOFIX points in the two outboard seats
10:03 and then hooks up the back here for hanging things.
10:06 Okay, we're on the move in the Hilux.
10:09 So it retains the same 2.8 litre
10:11 four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine,
10:13 but importantly, it has a bit more punch.
10:16 Now produces 150 kilowatts of power
10:18 and 500 newton meters of torque.
10:21 So it now matches vehicles like the Ranger,
10:23 which with its two litre diesel
10:24 has always had that punchy engine.
10:26 So it is a welcome addition.
10:27 It retains the six speed automatic transmission as well.
10:31 Now, how does all that feel?
10:32 Well, from a standing start,
10:33 it actually feels like it's a little more urgent
10:36 in terms of its torque delivery.
10:38 And if I give it a punch now,
10:39 it sort of gets up and moves a whole lot better.
10:43 Like it's more eager to get up
10:44 and really just deliver that torque without any delay.
10:47 But the only downside is when you do get stuck into it
10:50 and it reaches above 3000 RPM,
10:53 it really sends a harsh vibration through the car
10:56 and it can be quite noisy as well.
10:57 So yes, they have extracted a bit more out of it,
11:00 but it's come slightly at the cost of refinement.
11:02 Let's talk about drive modes.
11:03 You really only have two to choose from here.
11:05 You have eco mode, which just kills the throttle.
11:08 So you can go three quarter throttle
11:09 and nothing really happens.
11:10 Then you have power mode, which does the opposite.
11:13 It makes the throttle super sensitive.
11:14 So as you lean into it, it's more eager to go back through.
11:17 It's kind of like at the three quarter mark,
11:19 it's at full throttle as opposed to full throttle
11:21 being full throttle.
11:22 Now, what about zero to 100?
11:23 I know it's not overly important for dual cab utes,
11:26 but I'm keen to see whether this recent power bump
11:28 has improved.
11:30 (car engine roaring)
11:33 Okay, let's talk fuel economy.
11:42 The official figure is 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres.
11:47 So we're sitting on, okay, so we're sitting on 12,
11:49 which is significantly high.
11:50 Keep in mind, we have been doing a little bit
11:52 of off-roading today and the car's been idling
11:54 a little bit as well.
11:55 So that is going to be higher than what you'd expect,
11:58 but traditionally with Hiluxes,
11:59 we've seen around the eight to nine litre per 100 mark
12:02 when we've driven them for a longer period of time.
12:04 So this is probably sitting a little higher
12:06 than where we'd expect it to normally be.
12:08 Now, what about the ride?
12:09 This is another thing they improved with Hilux
12:11 and traditionally with Hilux,
12:12 when there was nothing in the tray,
12:14 it was one of the firmest riding utes in the segment.
12:16 It felt like a sports car.
12:18 You put a little bit of weight in the tray
12:19 and that all disappeared.
12:20 Now what they've done is they've really rounded off
12:22 that hard edge to it.
12:23 So even here on this really poor quality country road,
12:27 it's soaking up everything really nicely.
12:29 And this is now one of the better riding utes
12:31 in the segment.
12:32 It's still not class leading by any stretch,
12:34 but it is far better than where it used to be.
12:36 And it just makes it more manageable,
12:38 especially when you do need to move out of the way
12:39 for other cars coming in your direction
12:41 and you're met with gravel surfaces and changing road types.
12:45 Let's talk road noise.
12:46 So you don't really hear much coming in through the tyres,
12:48 but there is a bit of wind noise coming into the cabin.
12:51 And then as I mentioned earlier,
12:52 that engine can get quite noisy and thrashy
12:55 as you get stuck into it.
12:56 Steering feel.
12:57 Well, it's a hydraulically assisted steering rack,
12:59 so it doesn't have a great amount of feel
13:01 and it can be quite heavy at times,
13:03 especially at low speeds when you're trying to park.
13:05 It doesn't quite have the finesse or the ease
13:07 of an electrically assisted steering rack.
13:09 Now what about handling?
13:10 Okay, it's a dual cab ute,
13:12 so no one really cares about handling.
13:14 Look, it does the job.
13:16 This being one of the firmer utes in the segment
13:18 means it sits a little flatter,
13:19 but at the end of the day,
13:20 no one's really going to be throwing this around
13:22 anytime soon.
13:23 Let's talk visibility.
13:24 So at the front, it's fine.
13:25 You sit quite low in this compared to other dual cab utes.
13:28 Now it's quite ironic given how high they sit,
13:30 but this feels a little lower.
13:32 Decent size wing mirrors.
13:33 There is no blind spot monitoring here with the SR5.
13:36 And in terms of rearward visibility,
13:37 it's very easy to see out of,
13:39 even with that chassis tray
13:41 and the lines that come associated with it.
13:43 Now the question you're all asking,
13:45 what about the diesel particulate filter?
13:47 So Toyota had a lot of troubles with Hilux
13:50 and also Fortuna when it came
13:52 to the diesel particulate filter.
13:54 They have addressed that now
13:55 and there is a manual burn switch
13:57 plus a litany of instructions attached to the door,
14:00 which gives you an idea of what you need to do
14:01 if you need to manually clear the diesel particulate filter.
14:05 Okay, let's talk off-road equipment.
14:07 So being a dual cab ute,
14:08 a lot of people use these for work during the week
14:11 and then play during the weekend.
14:12 And that means doing a little bit of light off-roading,
14:14 which is what we'll do today.
14:15 I'll run you through the four-wheel drive equipment.
14:16 So it has two-wheel drive predominantly,
14:19 and that's rear wheel drive.
14:20 You can go to four high, which is a four-wheel drive mode,
14:23 and you can do that on the fly.
14:24 And then you have four-wheel drive low range.
14:27 You also have a rear differential lock,
14:29 but that only works in low range.
14:31 So if you try and press that now,
14:32 you can see it comes up with a little error message there.
14:34 You also have a hill descent control too
14:36 that I will show you in just a second.
14:38 Now, if you do wanna know what all of this stuff means,
14:40 if perhaps it doesn't really make too much sense to you,
14:43 you can watch our four-wheel drive controls explained video,
14:46 which is just up there, but let's give this a shot.
14:49 So in terms of the critical figures,
14:50 you have a 29 degree approach angle.
14:53 That is the angle of the face you can approach
14:54 before you scuff or hit anything at the front of the car,
14:57 and a 27 degree departure angle,
14:59 which is helped by the fact
15:00 that you have that tray on the back.
15:01 So what we'll do, we have our log mountain just here.
15:04 We'll pop that into four-wheel drive.
15:06 You just turn that little lever,
15:07 you get a symbol pop-up saying
15:09 that it's in four-wheel drive mode.
15:11 We'll just see how this goes.
15:13 It's all nice and dry here at the moment,
15:14 so this shouldn't be too much of a struggle,
15:17 but I'm just keen to see how the throttle feels
15:18 and how it behaves here in terms of traction controls.
15:22 Look, it's fairly fuss-free.
15:23 It's just walking up this really nicely.
15:25 Toyota has refined this system over time,
15:28 so the throttle sensitivity here is excellent.
15:31 It's not surging, it's not doing any silly stuff.
15:33 Where they did have a problem though,
15:34 especially in the Prado,
15:35 was the brake pedal feel on descents when you had bumps.
15:39 So let's give this a shot around here
15:41 as we come down the rocks.
15:43 So you have 216 millimeters of ground clearance.
15:47 I'll just crawl over these.
15:48 Yeah, that all feels really nice.
15:50 You can feel a little thunk under there,
15:52 but for the most part, it feels good.
15:53 Terms of that brake pedal feel,
15:55 it still is a little bit sensitive.
15:57 It's sort of causing us to lean on and off the brake,
16:00 which can be a little unsettling,
16:01 but for the most part, it's okay.
16:03 Pop that hill descent control on.
16:04 We'll give that a shot as we crest this.
16:06 That works well.
16:08 It's a noisy system though.
16:11 I can hear it doing stuff in the background there
16:12 as the traction control works.
16:14 So yeah, okay, cool.
16:15 So the hill descent control is actually pretty good.
16:17 Maintains a safe spin and it doesn't run away from you.
16:20 Now there is a 700 millimeter wading depth,
16:22 and normally this is the point
16:24 where I would show you what that looks like,
16:25 but the river is incredibly high at the moment,
16:27 so we cannot drive through it.
16:29 So the Toyota Hilux, look,
16:31 while this is the best selling car
16:33 in not only the segment, but Australia,
16:36 I think it's falling behind the times a little bit.
16:38 While it is impressive that they have improved
16:40 that diesel engine,
16:41 it just doesn't feel as refined as some of the competitors.
16:44 You've got a brand new D-MAX here, a new Navara coming,
16:47 and we're getting to the point now
16:48 where the rest of the competitors have really excelled
16:51 and present better purchase choices than the Hilux.
16:54 So while this was once the darling and was reliable,
16:57 I think it has been overtaken now
16:58 by a number of the competitors.
17:00 So let me know in the comments below,
17:02 what do you think about that?
17:03 Am I making a crazy statement here?
17:05 Will you forever buy Hiluxes
17:06 regardless of what Toyota does to them?
17:09 Would you reckon you'll check out
17:10 other vehicles in this segment?
17:11 Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.
