00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 So I've got a confession to make, I love V8s.
00:03 They're just so silky smooth and effortless,
00:06 especially in big SUVs.
00:08 And this is the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
00:11 This one here has the V8.
00:12 It's a mid-spec model.
00:14 It's called the S Limited,
00:15 and it's priced at just under $73,000.
00:19 It competes with things like Kia Sorento,
00:22 Mazda CX-9, Toyota Prado.
00:24 There's a lot of competitors in that segment,
00:26 but this is the only one you're gonna find
00:28 with a big V8 engine before you jump up to things
00:30 like the Nissan Patrol.
00:32 I know this car is now ancient
00:33 and it's gonna be replaced next year,
00:34 but there's still plenty on the road
00:36 and I think it's worth looking at
00:37 if you're in the market for an SUV.
00:39 Today we're going to do a detailed review
00:41 of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
00:42 If you do wanna skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:44 you can use the time codes up on the screen there,
00:46 or if you're on YouTube,
00:47 just scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:49 And if you haven't done so already,
00:51 make sure you hit subscribe and press the bell icon
00:53 so you can find out every single time we drive a V8.
00:57 Let's start with the exterior.
00:59 Now, colors.
01:00 You've got four to choose from
01:01 and all but white is an additional $895.
01:05 So I'm gonna begin up the top here with the bonnet.
01:07 So this looks a little different
01:08 to a regular Jeep Grand Cherokee bonnet
01:10 because the V8 version,
01:12 regardless of whether it's supercharged or not,
01:14 gets the SRT hood.
01:15 So I kinda like the look of that.
01:16 You got these gills here and they're real.
01:18 I love the black Jeep badging there as well,
01:20 and this red color looks sensational.
01:23 And what about all this grill area?
01:25 Well, lots of black highlights there.
01:27 You can see the black down the bottom radar
01:29 for the adaptive cruise control.
01:31 I still think despite its age,
01:33 and this is absolutely getting on now,
01:35 this is still a really good looking SUV.
01:37 They've made refinements to it over the years,
01:39 but I think for the most part,
01:40 it still really just looks nice and aggressive
01:42 out on the road.
01:43 And of course, you can go all the way up
01:44 to the supercharged models,
01:46 but at the $70,000 mark,
01:48 this is actually pretty good value for a V8.
01:50 Now, what about headlights?
01:51 Given it is so old,
01:52 this is one of the few cars on the market
01:54 that still uses bizen and headlights
01:56 with LED daytime running lights.
01:57 You've got another set of fog lamps down there.
02:00 And then if we jump around to the side,
02:02 you've got a 20 inch set of alloy wheels.
02:04 I really like this design.
02:05 It's kind of like a graphite color,
02:07 and it's got a little bit of pearlescent in there as well.
02:10 So they're pretty blingy looking wheels
02:11 without being too over the top.
02:13 So I like that design.
02:15 Over here, you've got an indicator built into that wing mirror
02:17 with a black gloss highlight along the top.
02:20 Grand Cherokee badge down the side of the car.
02:23 You've got roof rails, privacy glass.
02:25 And then if you come around to the rear,
02:27 the S signifies that it's the S Limited.
02:30 You've got an LED portion there to those taillights
02:32 and a 3,500 kilogram brake towing capacity.
02:35 Oh, and have a look at this, real exhausts.
02:38 Something else you don't really see on too many cars today.
02:41 And they're black as well, which I think looks cool.
02:42 So we are inside the Grand Cherokee.
02:44 Let's start with the key.
02:46 So what it looks like, you've got unlock,
02:47 lock, boot, and then this.
02:50 Now this is actually for remote starting.
02:52 So you're able to remotely start the engine
02:54 to run the cooling or the heating.
02:55 Very cool feature, especially if you're down at the beach
02:57 and it's a hot day or stuff like that.
02:58 And then on the back, you've got Jeep there.
03:00 This is a proximity sensing key.
03:02 So you just leave that in your pocket
03:03 and grab the door handle, it unlocks the car.
03:06 And then over here, you have a stop start button as well.
03:09 Now, what about styling?
03:10 So I mentioned earlier that this car has been out
03:12 for absolute donkey's years,
03:13 but it actually still looks pretty good, I reckon.
03:16 So they've got this nicely styled dash.
03:18 All of your critical controls are here in the center.
03:20 Yes, there is piano black,
03:22 but they haven't gone too overboard with it.
03:24 And then it's broken up with this dark wood grain material.
03:27 I don't think it's actually wood,
03:28 but this wood grain-esque material along the dashboard.
03:31 And then it follows around on the doors as well.
03:33 So I still think this looks quite modern.
03:35 I don't think it looks out of place or out of touch today.
03:38 And I think when they do release the new model next year,
03:40 it'll actually continue that trend of Jeep with styling,
03:42 especially if the new Grand Wagoneer is anything to go by.
03:46 By the way, if you wanna see a video
03:47 on the Grand Wagoneer, click up here.
03:48 We can give you a run through of it.
03:50 Now, what about things like materials?
03:52 So these materials are all really nice and soft,
03:54 and that follows on to the touch points,
03:56 such as that center armrest,
03:58 and then your door armrest as well.
04:00 How soft are they though?
04:01 Well, we have our durometer.
04:02 We've tested all the main surfaces on this car.
04:04 If you wanna see how it compares to other cars
04:06 that we've tested before,
04:07 use the link in the description below.
04:09 And then build quality, what about that?
04:12 Hmm, it's okay.
04:14 I mean, that wobbles around a fair bit,
04:17 but everything else feels okay.
04:20 I'm actually keen to hear that there's a lot of
04:21 sort of, I guess, a lot of people complain
04:23 about Jeep build quality,
04:25 but I'm keen to hear from you owners.
04:26 Do you own a Grand Cherokee or another Jeep product?
04:28 Let us know in the comment section below
04:30 whether you've had any dramas with it,
04:31 and if so, how easy it was to get everything resolved.
04:34 Okay, let's talk infotainment.
04:35 So this is one of the highlights of the interior.
04:37 It's called the Uconnect system.
04:39 It's an 8.4 inch display,
04:41 and we have a detailed review of Jeep's infotainment system.
04:44 You can watch it by clicking up here,
04:45 but today I'm just gonna give you a brief run through
04:47 of the infotainment plus the screen ahead of the driver.
04:50 Now, the reason I say this is so good
04:51 is just because of how easy it is to use
04:54 and how fast it is.
04:55 So you can see here, we've got our radio menu
04:57 where you get AM, FM, DAB plus digital radio,
05:00 all nicely laid out.
05:01 And you watch here as we go through transition
05:03 between menus, everything is just really nice and quick.
05:06 There's no delay.
05:07 It's just all nice and sharp.
05:09 So in terms of smartphone mirroring,
05:11 you have both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
05:13 I'll show you what Android Auto looks like.
05:15 So there it is there.
05:16 It's almost a full screen integration,
05:18 but they retain the shortcut control
05:20 so you can actually get between menus.
05:21 That's really nice and quick as well,
05:23 and super high resolution as well.
05:25 Then I'll show you what Apple CarPlay looks like.
05:27 Similar integration there.
05:28 It takes up all of the available space
05:29 and so high resolution.
05:32 That is really cool.
05:33 I like that.
05:34 So all of this technology is over a cable.
05:36 It's not wireless, which is a little bit disappointing,
05:38 but some manufacturers are now moving to wireless CarPlay
05:41 and Android Auto, which means you'll be able
05:43 to ditch the cable and make life a little easier.
05:45 In terms of the rest of the things you can do here,
05:47 the controls menu is where you turn your heated seats
05:49 and heated steering wheel on and off.
05:51 You can activate the reverse camera.
05:52 Then you've also got additional Uconnect apps
05:55 that you can run through this system,
05:57 such as off-road information, which we'll go through later.
06:00 Ahead of the driver, you have a tachometer on the left,
06:03 a fuel gauge and engine temperature on the right,
06:05 but in the center is a digital display,
06:07 and that digital display is full of information.
06:10 So you have your trip computer, you have speed warnings,
06:13 you also have configurable displays
06:15 so you can choose what appears there,
06:16 messages, and also your safety systems as well,
06:19 along with radio and four-wheel drive information.
06:22 So I keep saying this, but this car is so old,
06:24 but it has all of this new stuff here
06:26 that kind of puts a band-aid over the age of the vehicle,
06:28 and it makes you feel like you're driving
06:30 something incredibly modern.
06:31 In addition to all of this,
06:32 you have a voice recognition system.
06:33 The Uconnect native voice recognition
06:36 is actually really quite good,
06:37 but when you do have a smartphone paired,
06:39 it sends commands through to your phone.
06:41 So you get the best of both worlds there.
06:43 You've got a nine-speaker sound system as well,
06:44 and then in terms of connectivity,
06:46 you have two USB ports, one auxiliary port,
06:49 a 12-volt outlet up the front,
06:50 and then another 12-volt outlet in the center console.
06:53 Moving on to safety, you have autonomous emergency braking.
06:56 You also have radar cruise control,
06:58 a lane departure assistant, blind spot monitoring,
07:01 so it is pretty well-equipped in terms of safety tech.
07:04 You have front and rear parking sensors,
07:05 plus a semi-autonomous parking assistant.
07:08 Now let's have a look at what
07:09 the reverse view camera looks like.
07:11 Look, it's pretty reasonable.
07:13 It is a little bit grainy, but you get those guidelines,
07:15 plus also a guideline for reversing a trailer in.
07:19 So it's gonna be very helpful if you do any towing.
07:21 Okay, practicality.
07:22 Let's start with storage and your phone.
07:25 So your phone can easily live in the cup holders,
07:28 but one curious thing I've noticed here,
07:30 because this car is older,
07:32 they obviously designed phone storage
07:34 before these bigger phones were released.
07:36 So it doesn't actually fit in down there.
07:38 You've also got no wireless phone charging.
07:41 In terms of coffee cups,
07:42 so this is a test we're trying out in cars now.
07:45 But notice here, this is a common issue I'm finding now,
07:47 that some of these cup holders just are not designed
07:49 for smaller coffee cups.
07:51 So as you put the cup in, it grabs the edges
07:53 and it kind of makes it hard while you're driving to grab it
07:55 'cause you might pull the lid off
07:56 and then it goes everywhere.
07:57 So just something to keep in mind.
07:59 And then in terms of bottle storage,
08:02 bottles easily fit in there.
08:03 You've got some teeth as well to hold them in nice and tight.
08:05 And then within the door,
08:07 you've got bottle storage plus room for bits and pieces.
08:10 Center console has two sections to it.
08:12 So top section for coins and keys and things.
08:14 And then another section down here where other things fit.
08:17 It's actually quite deep.
08:18 And then you've also got a glove box
08:20 that easily fits a bottle.
08:21 It's quite a decent size glove box.
08:24 And then finally, you have a sunglasses holder up the top.
08:27 Okay, moving on to comfort,
08:28 you have dual zone automatic climate control.
08:30 You've got heated seats for the front row.
08:33 You've also got a heated steering wheel.
08:35 And then in terms of the seats themselves,
08:37 being a Yank tank, the seats are actually really comfortable.
08:40 So you can see here, they're quite supportive,
08:42 especially for bigger people.
08:43 And then they've got this perforated section
08:45 down the bottom.
08:46 The seats are also electrically adjustable for the driver
08:48 and front passenger.
08:49 You get seat memory as well for the driver.
08:51 Big steering wheel as well.
08:52 You have electric steering adjustment as well.
08:55 And then all of this is really easy to reach.
08:57 The only thing I wanna point out
08:58 is you only really see this on older American cars,
09:01 but there is a foot operated park brake here,
09:04 which is, I don't know, let's just get rid of that
09:06 and just have an electronic one.
09:08 Okay, we're in the second row of the Grand Cherokee.
09:11 Look, there's actually not a huge amount of room.
09:14 I do have knee room here.
09:15 Toe room's okay as well, and head room's good.
09:18 Just feels a little bit cramped.
09:19 You look at the size of this vehicle from the outside
09:21 and you think to yourself, there is heaps of room.
09:22 But anyway, the good news is these seats move a little bit
09:26 so you can get a little more relaxed if you need to.
09:28 So the back and the base as well.
09:31 Then you have a center armrest with two cup holders.
09:34 You can stick your bottles in there.
09:35 They can also live in the door too.
09:38 Now this is interesting.
09:38 You've got air vents, which is great,
09:40 but then you can also select whether you want them
09:42 at that sort of level there
09:43 or if you want them at the feet.
09:44 So I haven't seen that before.
09:46 And then two USB ports down the bottom.
09:48 You've got these nets as well behind the seats.
09:51 Plus ISOFIX points on the two outboard seats.
09:54 Okay, let's talk cargo space.
09:56 So you have a power operated tailgate.
09:59 Tighten a bit slow, but that's okay.
10:02 There it is there.
10:03 So you have just under 800 litres of cargo space available.
10:07 It's actually not that high.
10:09 I'm sort of finding I have to duck down a little bit.
10:10 So yeah, just under 800 litres of cargo space.
10:13 You've got hooks down the side here along the sidewall.
10:16 But the interesting thing is under the cargo floor,
10:19 you have a full-size spare tyre
10:21 with room on the sides as well.
10:22 This isn't something you see all that often
10:25 in vehicles this size.
10:26 They normally stick it underneath or something like that.
10:27 So that's really good to see.
10:29 Let's see how our bags fit.
10:31 I think this will fit without too many dramas.
10:34 Yeah, easy.
10:36 Now the other good thing as well
10:37 is that the second row folds flat.
10:40 It doesn't happen from here though.
10:41 You've got to go over there to do that.
10:43 So I'll sort that out.
10:44 And with the second row folded,
10:47 you get just under 1600 litres.
10:49 All right, we are out driving the Grand Cherokee.
10:54 Let's talk about the engine.
10:55 So it is a 5.7 litre naturally aspirated Hemi V8.
11:00 It produces 259 kilowatts of power
11:03 and 520 newton metres of torque.
11:05 Now it doesn't sound like a great deal,
11:07 but remember this is naturally aspirated.
11:09 So you're not going to get the big figures
11:11 that you see with supercharged or turbocharged V8 engines.
11:15 And it is made it to a really nice and sensible gearbox
11:17 and eight speed automatic torque converter.
11:19 So it is so nice and smooth as you get stuck
11:23 into the throttle and just start resting into it.
11:25 It just all responds nice and smoothly.
11:27 And then when you do sort of want to give it a kick,
11:30 makes such a good sound.
11:32 I love the noise of a Hemi.
11:33 It is a pretty old engine,
11:35 but I think it still serves its purpose well.
11:37 And it gives you all the thrills that you need
11:38 from a naturally aspirated V8.
11:40 And in terms of drive,
11:41 it's a permanent all wheel drive system.
11:43 So you're constantly sending torque to all four wheels
11:45 and you never really feel like
11:47 there's a lack of traction there.
11:48 And we'll run through the four wheel drive control shortly,
11:50 but when you are driving on the road,
11:52 it all just feels nice and planted.
11:53 So the official fuel economy is 13 litres per 100 kilometres.
11:58 But what are we sitting on?
11:59 We're currently sitting on 15.4.
12:02 That's about what I'd expect from a V8
12:04 in a vehicle this size.
12:06 But keep in mind that I'm pretty sure
12:07 when we tested the Patrol V8,
12:09 which is a bigger, meatier four wheel drive
12:12 with also a naturally aspirated V8,
12:14 it actually used less fuel.
12:15 So it's interesting to say
12:17 that this is sitting a little bit higher.
12:19 We have been doing a mix of city and highway driving,
12:21 and that figure is going to go up even higher
12:23 if you are doing towing,
12:24 especially if there's hilly terrain involved.
12:26 Okay, let's talk about drive mode.
12:27 So you've got an eco mode,
12:28 which I don't think anyone's interested in,
12:30 and then a sport mode.
12:31 You hit that, you feel the gearbox dial back a few gears,
12:34 you see sport mode come up,
12:36 instantly it all feels much sharper.
12:39 You hear that V8 singing as well.
12:42 That's actually making a really nice sound.
12:44 Let me give that another kick.
12:45 I like that.
12:49 In addition to that sport mode,
12:50 you can manually shift gears
12:52 using the paddles here on the steering wheel,
12:55 or simply moving lever across
12:57 and going up and down through the gears.
12:59 Now, what about zero to 100?
13:00 There is no official time,
13:01 but let's see how it goes against our stopwatch.
13:04 Okay, so moving on from that,
13:17 because this doesn't have adaptive dampers,
13:18 the ride is always the same.
13:20 It doesn't even have air suspension.
13:21 You get that on some of the higher grade models,
13:23 but it's not such a bad thing.
13:24 The ride is incredibly comfortable.
13:26 It's tuned like an American car.
13:28 So it is quite soft over continuous undulations.
13:31 It just floats nicely.
13:33 And it really is just built for these country roads,
13:35 because whenever you hit a big rise like that
13:38 that falls in afterwards,
13:40 it just really soaks it in nicely.
13:41 And it just doesn't make you feel
13:43 like there's no body control.
13:44 It just feels really nice and planted.
13:46 So we're out on a country road at the moment,
13:48 and it's actually really quiet inside the cabin.
13:50 I can't hear any wind noise
13:51 coming in through those wing mirrors,
13:53 and there's barely any tire noise as well.
13:55 So that's gonna be something to keep in mind
13:56 if you are doing long distance driving across Australia,
13:59 that kind of thing,
14:00 where some of the roads can be quite course chip.
14:02 This just sucks them up nicely.
14:03 Okay, what about handling?
14:05 So yes, I know, not a sports car,
14:06 but a little corner here, let's see how it feels.
14:10 Look, it's not terrible.
14:13 Sits nice and flat,
14:14 and that V8 engine just picks up nicely and slingshots it.
14:17 So yeah, tick on the handling front.
14:19 Now, what about visibility?
14:20 Yes, it is a big old SUV,
14:22 but I can clearly see out the front there.
14:24 The window's quite big at the rear,
14:25 so it's easy to see out the rear.
14:28 The wing mirrors are massive as well
14:29 with blind spot monitors.
14:30 So you're never really left wanting for any more visibility.
14:33 And then of course you have
14:34 that semi-autonomous parking feature
14:36 in front and rear parking sensors.
14:37 So low speed drivability is pretty straightforward.
14:40 In terms of turning circle, 12.2 metres.
14:43 So it's not the world's tightest turning circle,
14:46 but it does mean you should be able to get away
14:48 with doing U-turns without a 3.2.
14:51 Okay, let's talk off-road equipment
14:54 because Jeeps are known for being able to go off-road.
14:57 So even here in the mid-spec,
14:58 you actually still get a pretty comprehensive package
15:01 of off-road equipment.
15:01 So you can do some light off-roading,
15:02 which we're going to do right now.
15:04 So I'll run you through it all.
15:05 You have a low range transfer case,
15:08 you have a hill descent control,
15:09 and then also a selector here for different terrains,
15:12 and that's going to modify the stability control
15:14 and how it deals with sending traction
15:16 to each side of the vehicle.
15:18 In terms of the off-road specifications,
15:20 you have 218 millimetres of ground clearance,
15:23 a 26 degree approach angle,
15:25 so that's the angle of the face you can approach
15:26 before you hit something,
15:27 and then a 24 degree departure angle,
15:29 which is the same except in reverse.
15:32 And finally, you have a waiting depth
15:33 of just over 500 millimetres.
15:35 Now I want to also point out that here,
15:37 there's actually on Uconnect an off-road package screen.
15:40 And this is pretty cool because if you are driving off-road,
15:43 this gives you a little bit more detail
15:45 on what's happening beneath the car.
15:46 So you can basically see things like your steering angle,
15:49 what the transfer case is doing,
15:50 how much pitch and roll you have,
15:52 what the accessory gauges are up to,
15:54 so the temperatures of your vehicle,
15:56 and then also the terrain that you have selected.
15:58 Now, it has absolutely bucketed down here overnight,
16:02 and it is incredibly muddy and stuff.
16:04 So what I'm going to do is go into low range,
16:06 which is achieved by going into neutral
16:09 and hitting low range.
16:11 I prefer to do this in petrol cars
16:12 because it just gives you a little bit more control
16:14 over descent speeds and a little less surging
16:17 when you're going up things.
16:18 Also, just in case any of this stuff doesn't make any sense
16:21 or you do want a refresher,
16:22 click up here to have a look
16:23 at our four-wheel drive controls explained video.
16:26 All right, let's give this a shot.
16:27 We'll head up Log Mountain first.
16:29 So all of the bits in between the logs
16:31 are quite slippery here.
16:33 So I'll be curious to see how it handles that,
16:35 and I'll pop that into mud mode as well.
16:38 Okay, so we don't have air suspension,
16:40 so we can't lift the car.
16:42 It's actually coping with this really nicely,
16:43 and it's incredibly comfortable in here as well.
16:46 Yeah, I'm finding with the throttle,
16:48 it's not surging or throwing me forward.
16:50 It's really nicely controlled,
16:52 and I feel like I'm in charge of what's going on.
16:56 Okay, we'll head down the rocks here.
16:57 It doesn't have the world's biggest ground clearance,
16:59 so I think we're probably gonna have a little tap,
17:02 but I'm gonna manually select first gear
17:05 just so we can control our descent speeds.
17:09 There it is there, and we'll line it up over the rocks.
17:12 Just a little tip here,
17:13 if you ever are driving down rocks like this,
17:15 it is worth checking your path first
17:17 because you don't want to have a rock that comes up
17:21 and gouges the car.
17:22 Also gonna kill the parking sensors as well
17:25 so they don't annoy us.
17:27 All right, we'll just have a really slow descent down here.
17:31 If you can see this from where I am,
17:34 it's actually quite steep.
17:36 In fact, I'll tell you how steep it is.
17:37 Currently coming over to 14, 15 degrees,
17:41 and because it's so muddy, everything's really loose,
17:44 so as I use the brake pedal, as we come down,
17:46 it's sort of sliding a little bit.
17:49 What we'll do as well, we're reaching 20 degrees there,
17:51 I'm gonna pop the hill descent control on
17:53 for the remainder of this, and we'll see how that works.
17:56 You can use the paddle shifters
17:57 to adjust the hill descent control speed here as well.
18:00 So I'll go down to the slowest speed it can do.
18:03 Okay, so I'm completely off the brake there.
18:06 That's actually really good.
18:08 This is probably one of the best hill descent controls
18:11 we've had the chance to test,
18:12 and I love the fact that I can control the speed entirely
18:15 there with the paddles too.
18:17 So there you go.
18:18 That is actually really impressive for a stock SUV.
18:21 You can go to other Jeep Grand Cherokee models
18:24 if you want the more advanced four-wheel drive system
18:26 with locking differentials and air suspension,
18:28 but for the most part, this is gonna do the job.
18:30 Okay, Jeep Grand Cherokee.
18:32 It's an oldie, but it's a goldie.
18:35 It's just hard to fault.
18:36 Like, yes, I know it's not the most advanced SUV
18:39 in this segment, but I don't know,
18:40 it really doesn't put a foot wrong.
18:41 It does the off-road thing really well.
18:43 It'll tow three and a half tonnes,
18:45 and okay, the V8 is probably not the most sensible option.
18:48 You could go the diesel instead.
18:49 I think that's still a really good engine,
18:51 nice and smooth as well,
18:52 but at the end of the day, it's still cheaper than a Patrol.
18:54 It'll tow the same as a Patrol,
18:56 and I think this is more comfortable as well than a Patrol.
18:59 So let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.
19:02 Would you buy a Grand Cherokee?
19:04 I'm pretty excited to see what this next generation is like.
19:06 As long as they keep all the core fundamentals
19:08 that they've crammed into this, into a brand new chassis,
19:12 I think they'll really be onto a winner.
19:13 So let me know what you think in the comments section below.
