00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. It is time to finally drive the Suzuki Jimny.
00:05 Been trying to get one of these for ages and just hasn't happened.
00:07 So, this is the new Suzuki Jimny Lite,
00:10 and that is because it is light in the mass sense,
00:13 and it's also light in terms of features and price.
00:16 So, it's priced at just under $30,000, only available in a 5-speed manual,
00:20 and it really doesn't have any competitors. It kind of sits on its own.
00:24 Today, we're going to do a detailed review of this car,
00:26 so if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:29 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:30 or if you're on YouTube, you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:33 If you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon,
00:36 so you can find out every single time we drive pint-sized cars like this.
00:42 So, let's talk exterior design. You've got seven colors to pick from.
00:45 All but white is going to cost you $695 or $1,295 if you go for the two-tone.
00:51 Sorry, it's so bright out here.
00:53 Yeah, look, I mean, there's probably not a lot to be said about the design.
00:56 It looks like a mini G-Wagon, and the light version even strips all of that back even further.
01:02 So, you've got halogen headlights instead of LED lights, so it is pretty basic there.
01:08 You have these little holes here for the engine.
01:09 It is a tiny little engine, but it only weighs just over 1,000 kilos,
01:13 so it doesn't need a huge amount of grunt,
01:15 and a little bit of cooling down the bottom there as well.
01:18 All of this is plastic down the front with a set of driving lights down the bottom, too,
01:22 so it's a pretty straightforward setup.
01:25 We'll jump around to the side.
01:27 Look at this. Steel wheels. Haven't seen these for a little while.
01:30 So, 15 inches in size and tiny little tires.
01:34 They're like bicycle tires, 165 millimeters wide, so very small.
01:38 You get wheel arch guards here as well, and you can actually see beneath the skin
01:42 that chassis rail that runs all the way to the back of the car,
01:45 so it is pretty cool to see all of that exposed indicator on the side there.
01:48 Up the top here, wing mirror just has a plastic cover on it,
01:52 so it's a pretty basic setup like the rest of the car.
01:55 And look how high it is. So, I'm 185 centimeters tall, about 6 foot 1,
01:59 and I'm sort of over the top of the car, so it is pretty small in terms of its size.
02:05 That black cladding runs all the way down the back of the car here.
02:08 You've got your fuel tank lid there, more steel at the rear here with drum brakes
02:13 and more of that exposed chassis rail.
02:15 And then come around to the back, you have a little aerial there, offset.
02:19 You've got a brake light built into here, washer there for the rear window.
02:22 You get a cover here for the spare tire which hangs off the back of the vehicle,
02:26 and then your brake lights and indicators are all halogen down there.
02:31 Jimny all-grip because it is an all-wheel drive version,
02:34 and then the door swings open as well, which I'll show you later on.
02:37 So, let me know what you reckon in the comment section below.
02:39 Do you think this is a cool little four-wheel drive?
02:42 Would you buy one? Is it worth waiting?
02:44 Because there is a fairly decent wait list at the moment,
02:46 so let me know what you think down in the comment section below.
02:48 So, we're inside the Jimny Lite.
02:50 We'll start off with the key, literally the key.
02:53 It's a key that you put in the side of the keyhole.
02:55 You've got a lock and unlock button, so I'll pop that in now and switch all this stuff on.
03:00 So, you know, what can I say?
03:02 The Jimny isn't exactly built to be the latest and greatest thing in the world,
03:07 and you can kind of tell that here.
03:08 It's all pretty old-school and straightforward.
03:11 Analog gauges ahead of the driver.
03:13 Hard-touch plastics everywhere, and that's fine.
03:15 It's kind of just built for that.
03:17 Don't go expecting anything too fancy.
03:19 You'll notice here on the Lite version as well, you get this tiny little radio system here,
03:23 so you don't get the infotainment system with CarPlay and all that sort of stuff like you do in the regular Jimny.
03:29 So, in terms of your touch points, well, there isn't anything to lean your arm on.
03:33 It's all just hard stuff.
03:36 How hard is it?
03:37 Well, we've got our durometer.
03:38 We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
03:41 If you want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested before,
03:44 have a look at the link in the description.
03:45 Now, build quality.
03:47 Kind of loose in the center there, but the rest of this feels okay.
03:51 Our door slam test.
03:54 Actually sounds pretty sturdy.
03:56 So, infotainment.
03:57 This is going to be a very short discussion.
03:59 I'll turn it on so you can see what it looks like.
04:00 So, it's like that digital sort of display.
04:05 You've got a CD player, which is nice.
04:06 AM and FM radio.
04:09 That's about it, plus Bluetooth as well, and it's all plumbed through a two-speaker sound system,
04:14 so not really a great deal going on here in terms of infotainment.
04:17 Ahead of the driver, though, you do have a little digital display that you can cycle through,
04:20 but yeah, it's all pretty straightforward.
04:23 So, safety tech.
04:24 This has not a good safety crash rating,
04:27 but it does have autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
04:31 You don't have any blind spot monitoring, auto-dimming mirror, or anything really like that.
04:35 You do have a lane departure warning.
04:38 You don't have any parking sensors or anything like that,
04:40 although it is pretty easy to see out of this,
04:41 and you have a tire on the back in case you nudge anything.
04:44 So, yeah, not a great deal of safety tech.
04:46 Moving on to practicality, and we'll start off with your connectivity.
04:49 You have one USB-A port down here.
04:52 You have a 12-volt outlet just next to it as well, 120 watt.
04:56 In terms of storing your phone, obviously no wireless phone charger and stuff,
04:59 but you can pop your phone down here if you want, and that's about it.
05:03 On other storage, yeah, I mean, there's not really much else here.
05:06 You've got a couple of cup holders there, and that's about it.
05:10 So, in terms of your cup holders, your coffee can go in there,
05:12 but the problem is you've got to reach back to grab that
05:14 and kind of take your eyes off the road each time.
05:17 See if our bottle fits in there.
05:18 Yes, no dramas. Doesn't fit inside the doors though.
05:21 And you have a glove box down here that's reasonably sized,
05:25 a little storage nook there, and a grab handle here just in case you go off-roading
05:30 and things get a little bit hairy.
05:31 Finally, comfort. So, you have just heater controls with air conditioning.
05:37 So, that's all pretty straightforward.
05:39 In terms of the seats themselves, both manually adjustable.
05:42 Pretty comfy too. Cloth material, so, you know, you don't really move around too much.
05:47 The car actually does move around heaps though,
05:49 just with the lightest movement, it kind of just shifts around the place.
05:53 On the steering front, you only have tilt adjustment.
05:56 There's no reach adjustment.
05:57 And on the reach test, all this stuff is fine to reach while you're driving.
06:00 Okay, so second row. I'm just going to climb over this.
06:03 You can move this seat forward if you want,
06:05 and you would if you were actually doing this properly,
06:07 because you'd have a driver in there, but I just wanted to give you an idea of how much legroom we have.
06:12 It's actually not bad back here.
06:13 So, I've got no creature comforts.
06:15 There's no like bottle holders outside of the one here in front of me or anything else like that.
06:20 No air vents either, but it's actually a pretty comfy place to be seated.
06:23 And I'm surprised how much room there is here,
06:25 which means there probably isn't going to be a great deal of boot room.
06:28 If you do want to carry kids, you have two ISOFIX points and two top tether points in your second row,
06:32 and you also do have a foot release on the passenger side to get that chair out of the way too.
06:37 So, yeah, not a bad space.
06:38 So, cargo space. There's not going to be a lot in here, I can tell you that much.
06:43 So, little hydraulic arm on the door. It swings open.
06:48 There it is there. It's 85 litres.
06:50 So, let me wheel my bags in here, but 85 litres.
06:54 I think it's 85 litres if you have that in its forward-most setting there,
06:58 because there's no way that would be 85 litres without that,
07:02 and I think you can probably just fit a laptop bag in there.
07:06 But the good news is, even though it is a four-seater, most of the time,
07:10 you can drop this out of the way, and then it expands the space to not much under 1,000 litres,
07:16 and that means you can actually load a few bits and pieces in here as well if you do want to.
07:22 And on top of that, you can actually turn this into a bed as well.
07:28 So, that means if you want to go camping or something like that,
07:30 you've actually got a little bit of accommodation there to have a sleep as well.
07:35 Now, in addition to all of that, you also have storage under here as well,
07:39 and the downside to this material is that whatever you put on there, it just slides around.
07:44 So, if you are going to use this as a daily, you probably want to have some grippy stuff on there as well.
07:49 Okay, so it is time to do some light off-roading.
07:52 I'll run you through the specs here first.
07:53 So, approach angle, 37 degrees. Departure angle, 49 degrees.
07:58 That is ridiculous, and I mean, you look at the overhangs and stuff,
08:02 and that is why you can achieve those crazy numbers.
08:04 Ground clearance of 210 mil, which isn't amazing.
08:07 In terms of your four-wheel drive hardware, you have two-wheel drive high range,
08:10 which is regularly rear-wheel drive.
08:12 Four-wheel drive high range, which you can't use on sealed surfaces.
08:15 And four-wheel drive low range.
08:17 There are no diff locks, but there is a hill descent control that works in four high or four low.
08:22 So, if none of that makes any sense, or you want to get a better understanding of where
08:25 and when you should be using those controls, have a look at the video we shot previously,
08:28 explaining four-wheel drive controls just up there.
08:30 Okay, so let's kick off with two-wheel drive first.
08:33 So, the reason I do this, Mogul, to start with in two-wheel drive is to see what the
08:38 traction control system is like.
08:40 So, because of the wheelbase, I'm going to have to go a little further forward than we
08:43 normally would to get that driver's side wheel off the ground, which is about there somewhere.
08:48 So, I can hear the traction control working, and the problem with the manual is,
08:53 and traction control, when it does start to bite, you will potentially stall the car.
08:57 So, if I let out of the clutch now, it almost stalls the car,
09:01 but the traction control system actually worked pretty well there.
09:03 So, I'll get that handbrake on and just ease out of that.
09:07 Come on.
09:09 Nice, excellent job, Jimny.
09:12 So, did really well there because the traction control system was biting and bogging down
09:16 the revs, but it wasn't biting enough for it to completely kill all of our torque.
09:21 So, nice job there in two-wheel drive high range.
09:24 We'll now turn around, and we'll give that a crack in four-wheel drive high range.
09:28 Okay, so to engage four-wheel drive high range, we just slip this down into four high.
09:32 You get a little indicator light come up there saying that's engaged,
09:35 and now we have all four wheels getting torque.
09:38 It's splitting torque 50/50 between the front and rear axle.
09:41 Let's see how it goes here.
09:42 So, a lot of dual-cab utes get stuck here when we get two wheels off the ground,
09:46 especially without a diff lock.
09:47 So, I'll be curious to see how the Jimny goes.
09:50 So, there's that traction control biting again.
09:54 I'll just give this another crack here.
09:57 (engine revving)
09:59 Now, that's just going to stall.
10:00 So, what I'll do, I'll back out of that, and then what I'll do is switch traction control off,
10:05 and we'll just see whether that gives us a little bit more purchase on our Mogul here
10:11 in four-wheel drive high range, because it is quite a tricky surface,
10:14 especially here with the highway terrains.
10:16 It is boggy and wet at the moment.
10:18 So, come on, come on.
10:21 (engine revving)
10:23 Clutch a little bit.
10:24 Nice!
10:25 (laughs)
10:26 Good on you, Jimny.
10:27 That was great.
10:27 So, just needed a little bit more revs, and then it was able to climb over that without any dramas.
10:32 So, awesome.
10:33 Loving this.
10:33 This is so much fun.
10:36 Okay, so it is now time for our hill.
10:39 So, what we typically do here is go into 4LOW and lock any diffs.
10:43 This doesn't have a diff lock, so I'm just going to stick it in 4LOW.
10:45 So, you've got to push this lever down and go all the way to 4L.
10:48 It beeps a couple of times once it's ready.
10:54 All right, I think it's in 4L.
10:55 It didn't actually make any noise.
10:57 I'll see if it does anything.
10:58 Oh, no, it was.
10:59 Okay.
11:00 There we go.
11:00 It's in 4L now.
11:01 So, there are no diff locks, so I'll leave all that stuff.
11:03 What I'll do, first time, I'll just try to drive up.
11:05 But second time, I'm going to come back and stop and see if it will then get up.
11:10 It's going to be a little bit tricky because it's a manual, and yeah, it'll be testing my skills or lack thereof.
11:15 So, let's see how it goes.
11:17 And it's on highway terrain tires, too, which doesn't help.
11:19 So, come on, come on, come on.
11:23 Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
11:26 Yeah.
11:27 All right.
11:28 There you go.
11:29 Just stuck in that, and it got up there.
11:31 So, we've got our mud bog here.
11:32 I'm a little bit concerned because the wading depth of this is only 300 millimeters.
11:37 So, I'm hoping our mud bog is more than 300 millimeters.
11:40 Our river is definitely more.
11:42 It's like 700 or 750 at the moment.
11:44 So, wish me luck.
11:46 Here we go.
11:49 There we go.
11:49 No problems at all.
11:50 So, all right, now, we do also have a hill descent control.
11:53 Just for the purposes of testing that, that works in 4 high and 4 low.
11:57 We're going to have the effect of engine braking in 4L anyway.
12:00 So, I'm going to switch this over to 4 high, and then I'll engage the hill descent control as well,
12:05 just so we can get a feel for what it's like over there, and I'll come back again to the hill in 4 low.
12:10 All right, here we go with hill descent control.
12:13 It's like I can't see anything over the edge there.
12:15 I assume that's good.
12:19 That's not bad.
12:20 It's not great either, though.
12:21 It kind of just breaks and then doesn't really do much.
12:25 So, I think that is kind of useless.
12:27 So, we'll leave that off, and we'll head back around now to do our hill one more time.
12:31 All right, another bog here.
12:33 Oh, that went over the bonnet.
12:35 That is deep.
12:37 Oops.
12:38 That's all right.
12:39 Don't tell anyone.
12:41 Okay, it's time for the hill again in low range.
12:43 I'm going to come to a stop this time,
12:45 and we'll see how well it does taking off once we are stationary.
12:49 So, let's stop that there.
12:52 All right, here we go.
12:52 I'm really going to test my skills now.
12:57 Oh, come on, come on, come on.
13:01 Oh, I'm destroying that hill, but we made it.
13:04 Good job, Jiminy.
13:06 Wow, this is actually really impressive.
13:08 Even without diff locks, this is climbing like a champ, and it is on highway terrain tires as well.
13:12 So, just imagine what this would be like with a set of meaty all-terrains.
13:15 So, back through our bog.
13:17 Here we go.
13:22 Okay, and final thing we're going to test is our rocks.
13:25 Left this in low range.
13:26 I'll be keen to see how this goes with 210 mil of ground clearance,
13:33 because, yeah, 210 mil is probably on the lower end of stuff that we've tested here before.
13:39 Oh, my God.
13:41 This is amateur hour on the manual transmission.
13:44 All right, let's give this a crack.
13:46 Oh, Jesus.
13:48 The car's broken, so what's wrong with it?
13:54 Looks like much harder than it looks to drive over rocks.
13:56 Oh, there we go, a little tap there.
13:59 Yeah, it's much harder than it looks to drive over rocks with a manual transmission.
14:03 Every time we do this, it's typically, oh, that is crunching nicely.
14:07 What I'll do, I'll get Sean to have a little look.
14:09 Sean, what does that look like under the front there?
14:11 If I keep going, will we leave the Suzuki's oil reserves on the ground here?
14:17 That sounded like the suspension.
14:19 - To recovery point, you're fine. - Okay, all right.
14:28 I have, tell you what, a lot of respect for people with manual four-wheel drives.
14:37 It is a lot of bloody work here, especially on this stuff.
14:39 I'm actually finding here with the handbrake, it actually works much easier to stop it from dropping in there.
14:48 So, there you go.
14:50 I am genuinely impressed by the Suzuki Jimny as an off-road vehicle, even with the highway terrain tires.
14:57 It's been able to tackle all this stuff without any dramas at all.
15:00 So, I think if you were to put a set of all-terrains on it, maybe even an air locker,
15:05 because I know you can get one as an aftermarket accessory on these, I think it would genuinely go anywhere.
15:10 And hats off to any of you that are using manual transmissions in your four-wheel drive.
15:14 You are clearly far better than I am at operating a manual gearbox off-road.
15:27 So, we have just hit the road in the Jimny.
15:30 Now, powering the Jimny is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
15:37 It makes 75 kilowatts of power and 130 newton-metres of torque.
15:43 Now, that may not sound like much, and that's because it isn't,
15:46 but you've got to keep in mind that this only weighs just over a thousand kilos.
15:50 So, it isn't really a huge amount of weight that you are moving around.
15:54 So, it is adequate, but not enough, I don't think.
15:58 But anyway, especially when they have the booster jet engine in the Suzuki range,
16:02 that would be such a good engine to fit into this.
16:04 And there is like a five-door version of the Jimny coming too.
16:06 That definitely needs more power than this has.
16:08 So, yeah, and that's all exclusively mated in the light version to a five-speed manual transmission.
16:14 Now, what does all that feel like behind the wheels?
16:16 So, I'm going to drop this back a couple of gears.
16:18 We'll go back to second, actually. Bring 50 k's an hour.
16:21 I've pinned that.
16:26 It feels how you would think 130 newton metres of torque feels like.
16:32 Not a great deal. So, yeah, look, it's not going to set any world records,
16:35 but, you know, it is what it is.
16:37 Now, let's talk fuel economy.
16:38 Suzuki claims a figure of just under 6.5 litres per 100 k's.
16:43 We will dive through our little menu here.
16:45 So, we're currently sitting on 8 litres per 100.
16:48 So, it is higher than that claim, but we had to do some off-road driving earlier in the day.
16:52 I did a couple of hot laps as well.
16:53 So, it's pushed the figure up a little bit,
16:55 but you can rest assured that this is not going to be using a great deal of fuel.
17:00 Okay, so time for our sine waves.
17:02 Let's try and get this up to 130.
17:05 I don't actually think we will get there, but I'll give it a shot anyway,
17:09 because there is a bend before we get to the sine waves,
17:12 and when I tip into it, it genuinely feels like we're going to roll over,
17:16 especially with the wind.
17:18 So, I will be as brave as I can.
17:21 I am flat to the board. Stability control light is flashing as we lean in.
17:25 Come on.
17:26 There's 120.
17:28 Oh!
17:29 Oh!
17:32 Oh, we almost hit 130.
17:35 Yeah, I don't know what it's like.
17:36 The problem is, if you're ever at the point where you're hitting 130 on the sine waves,
17:41 and it is bouncing around,
17:42 you have probably well and truly exceeded just every other limit of the car.
17:49 The wind, the crosswind that we have here today was really throwing it about everywhere.
17:53 So, yeah, can't really comment on body control, but it is sketchy when the speed picks up.
18:02 Okay, let's go for a bang around our circuit.
18:06 Let's see what this feels like. I'll try not to roll it over.
18:15 Oh, wow, it has so much body roll.
18:19 Oh!
18:23 Oh, my goodness, yeah, it has so much body roll.
18:26 You really can't do any great deal of pace here.
18:32 And the wind, it is, because it only weighs a thousand kilos,
18:36 the wind is really throwing it about everywhere,
18:38 and you don't have a great deal of feel through the steering wheel.
18:41 So, all of your inputs virtually have no interaction with where the car's going.
18:47 So, yeah, it is safe to say that you will not be setting any land speed records in your Jimny
18:54 if you do find a mountain pass.
18:58 Now, it's time for 0 to 100. Because I want to go to 120,
19:01 so we can get our 80 to 120 marker,
19:03 I am literally going to be using the entire skid pan plus the dynamic handling area
19:11 so that I don't run out of room.
19:13 So, wish me luck.
19:15 I'm going to turn stability control off so that we don't lose any traction off the line here,
19:20 and I'm going to be a little rough with you, Jimny, so hold on.
19:24 Here we go.
19:32 All right, come on.
19:36 It's 80.
19:39 100.
19:42 Come on!
19:43 Running out of room here. Running out of room.
19:48 All right, I'm going to stop.
19:50 Oh my God.
19:52 We literally have gone out onto the emergency braking area.
19:57 So, okay, 0 to 100, 12.4 seconds. 80 to 120, 11.2 seconds.
20:06 So, it actually took most of the time to get from 80 to 120.
20:10 That is where this really just runs out of steam.
20:14 So, there you go. That was good fun.
20:17 Okay, so it is time to do our reverse speed test.
20:20 So, let's pop this into reverse and see how we go.
20:29 40 k's an hour in reverse.
20:36 Okay, so ride as well. I mentioned earlier on our sine waves,
20:41 but you know, you can't really get fast enough to have too much of a drama,
20:45 but in and around the city, it's actually pretty comfortable.
20:47 It's quite a soft ride and nothing too crazy.
20:50 So, it's not going to do your head in if you're doing this and driving this as a daily.
20:55 Now, let's talk road noise. So, it's not so much road noise,
20:58 but wind noise and engine noise and stuff that you hear just doing highway speeds.
21:02 It is really noisy inside the cabin. So, yeah, unfortunately for a long-distance drive,
21:08 you are going to be hearing everything that's going on.
21:10 Okay, let's talk visibility. So, I don't know, even though it isn't the tallest car in the world,
21:15 I can see clearly down the front of the bonnet there. Visibility out the back is fine.
21:18 You can see the edges of that tyre, and if you do have a rear passenger,
21:21 you catch the edges of those headrests. Wing mirrors are nice and big too,
21:24 but yeah, no blind spot monitor, no reverse camera.
21:27 So, parking will be a little touch and go if you're not entirely confident with that.
21:31 So, if you do want to tow, it has a 1300 kilo brake towing capacity,
21:35 which I think is not too bad, and a turning circle of under 10 meters.
21:38 So, it is a really tight car to turn lock to lock.
21:41 [Car engine revving]
21:45 So, the Suzuki Jimny. Look, it is so much fun off-road, and in that environment,
21:50 it really excels because it's light, you can chuck it about a bit,
21:53 and even on these tiny little tyres, it actually does pretty well.
21:56 It is let down on the dynamics front, and it's actually super sketchy when you have lots of wind,
22:01 and you're just trying to drive at like highway speeds.
22:03 It really is a little unnerving to drive it.
22:05 So, it does need more power, and when they're going to do the five-door version,
22:09 I really hope they just go to town on an engine that will actually move it,
22:13 because this with four people in it is slow, let alone with the five-door version,
22:17 where you've got luggage and people.
22:18 So, look, the positives outweigh the negatives, but it is worth keeping in mind
22:23 that this isn't going to set your world on fire in terms of pace and dynamics.
22:27 So, if you do buy it, it is going to be something that you want to be just driving in
22:30 and around the city, and perhaps out in the bush when you do go off-roading.
22:33 So, have you bought one of these? What's it like longer-term?
22:36 Let me know in the comments section down below.
22:38 I'm keen to see what you think about the Suzuki Jimny.
