00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. Small SUVs, they're not slowing down.
00:03 Latest cab off the rank is the Nissan Qashqai.
00:07 We had a brief look at this recently alongside
00:09 the Pathfinder and the X-Trail at Nissan headquarters,
00:12 but today we finally get to drive it, which is good news.
00:15 Now, how much is this gonna set you back?
00:17 This one here is the top specification.
00:19 It's called the Qashqai Ti.
00:21 It's priced at just over $47,000.
00:24 I know, it is a lot of money.
00:26 This competes with things like the Mitsubishi ASX,
00:29 the Kia Seltos, the MG ZS.
00:32 It's that size of vehicle.
00:34 Now, if this is too expensive,
00:36 the entire range kicks off at around that $33,000 mark.
00:39 So there are a few different options out there,
00:41 and there is a hybrid version of this coming soon as well.
00:43 Today we're gonna do a detailed review of this car.
00:46 So if you do wanna skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:48 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:50 or if you're on YouTube,
00:51 you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:53 If you haven't done so already,
00:53 subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon.
00:56 That way you can find out every single time
00:57 we review blue SUVs.
00:59 Now let's talk about the exterior design.
01:03 So you have eight colors to pick from.
01:06 All but this blue,
01:07 we're gonna set you back an additional 750 bucks.
01:09 You can then get a two-tone setup
01:11 for an additional 500 bucks on top of that.
01:13 Just in terms of the design,
01:15 I actually quite like this new sort of family face
01:18 that they have going.
01:19 So big grill there, big Nissan logo there as well.
01:23 Bit of chrome down the bottom there,
01:24 and then black down this lower section.
01:27 Over here on the headlights,
01:28 full adaptive LED headlights with LED daytime running light.
01:32 Have a look at this as well.
01:33 That is some proper meaty aero work going on there.
01:37 It kind of spits out to the side there to hit that tire.
01:41 So it's a pretty sort of impressive setup.
01:43 Around the side here,
01:44 we have a set of 19-inch alloy wheels.
01:49 They have a machined finish on the outside
01:50 and this sort of graphite finish on the inside there.
01:54 Pretty chunky profile on that tire too.
01:56 So it should mean that this actually rides well.
01:58 And I love it, I can see the exit of that little
02:00 sort of chisel there as well, which is kind of cool.
02:03 Wheel arch cladding there to protect you from stuff.
02:05 Keep in mind, this is front wheel drive,
02:07 180 millimeter ground clearance.
02:08 You're not gonna be doing any rock hopping anytime soon,
02:11 but kind of looks off roady with that stuff on it.
02:14 Up the top here,
02:15 you have black on the top section of the wing mirror.
02:18 Indicator built into there with a camera as well.
02:21 That's it, there's no puddle lamps under there.
02:23 Chrome dressing down the side here with a roof rail.
02:26 Glass panoramic roof as well, which I think is pretty cool.
02:30 Come around the back.
02:32 Around the back here, you have partial LED tail lights.
02:35 So LED section along the top there,
02:37 and then down the bottom here,
02:38 there's incandescent globes, unfortunately.
02:41 You do have privacy glass as well
02:43 in that rear section of the car.
02:44 Shark fin aerial up the top there.
02:46 Spoiler built into here,
02:48 and then Qashqai lettering with the Nissan logo just there.
02:53 Quite like this lower section.
02:54 So they've done away with the exhaust pipe,
02:56 so you can't really see any of that stuff.
02:58 And then it's all sort of pretty neat and tidy
03:00 down the bottom here as well.
03:01 So let me know what you reckon about the design
03:03 of the Qashqai.
03:04 Do you think it looks good?
03:05 Do you think they've done a good job here?
03:07 Do you like that new Nissan corporate face?
03:09 Let me know down there.
03:10 So we're inside the Qashqai.
03:12 Let's kick off with the key.
03:15 So you have Nissan up the top there.
03:17 Lock, unlock, boot.
03:19 Nice little bit of metallic trim around the edge there.
03:23 Nothing on the back.
03:24 It's a proximity sensing key.
03:25 So you grab the door handle.
03:26 Once you're inside,
03:27 you have a stop start button just there.
03:30 So look, I actually quite like the interior here.
03:34 This is an expensive car.
03:35 There is sort of no getting around that,
03:37 but it actually looks quite high end
03:39 and premium inside the cabin here.
03:41 It doesn't feel like any expense has been spared
03:43 on materials or technologies.
03:45 You've got that big infotainment screen up the top there.
03:47 Big one ahead of the driver, a big head up display.
03:50 You've got this trim along the doors there.
03:52 You've got different colored leather
03:54 within the doors as well.
03:55 Really is quite a sophisticated looking cabin.
03:59 Yeah, I actually really quite like it.
04:00 So what are your touch points like?
04:02 So up on the dashboard there,
04:03 this is all soft to the touch,
04:05 including these sections here where you rest your knee.
04:08 This is soft in the center there as well.
04:09 Soft on the doors too.
04:11 How soft is it?
04:12 Well, we've got our durometer.
04:13 We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
04:16 If you want to see how this car compares to others
04:17 that we've tested before,
04:18 look at the link in the description below.
04:20 Build quality.
04:21 What's it like?
04:22 Don't love that.
04:26 It's a bit sort of wonky there.
04:28 Little loose around there as well.
04:31 Door test.
04:33 Pretty nice and solid.
04:35 So let's talk infotainment.
04:37 It's a pretty impressive setup here.
04:38 So 12.3 inch display up the top here.
04:41 Color touchscreen as well.
04:43 You have a 12.3 inch display ahead of the driver.
04:45 You have a big head up display too.
04:47 Now in terms of the materials under the infotainment screen,
04:51 you do have a bit of piano black there,
04:52 but also this is where your shortcut buttons are as well,
04:55 should you need them.
04:57 So what have you got here?
04:58 So it actually has inbuilt satellite navigation.
05:00 So that's a pretty sort of responsive
05:03 and decent setup there.
05:05 And it means that if you don't have a smartphone mirror,
05:07 at least you can just pop this in and away you go.
05:10 In addition to that,
05:11 you can also control things like your massage seats here
05:14 and also add further shortcuts here as well.
05:16 They call them widgets.
05:17 So I think that's kind of nice.
05:19 In terms of smartphone mirroring,
05:21 you have both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
05:24 Show you what Apple CarPlay looks like.
05:25 There it is there.
05:27 So nice big display,
05:31 tiny bit laggy actually.
05:32 It's sort of not picking up my fingers
05:35 as I wipe it across there, but sort of is.
05:38 Yeah, yeah.
05:40 Could be a little bit quicker I reckon.
05:41 And this is what Android Auto looks like.
05:44 So it is worth pointing out,
05:45 Apple CarPlay is wireless, Android Auto is wired,
05:49 but I think they are working on a wireless solution there
05:51 at some point.
05:52 In addition to that, you have AM, FM, DAB, digital radio,
05:55 and a 10 speaker Bose branded sound system.
05:58 Really good sound system.
05:59 Quite impressed with that.
06:01 Now let's look at the screen here ahead of the driver.
06:03 It's a really nice display.
06:05 It's very high resolution, very clear,
06:07 lots of clarity there.
06:09 And I also like the fact that you can change
06:11 what it looks like as well.
06:12 So you can go back to analog gauges,
06:13 you can have that cool sort of digital layout,
06:16 and then you can customise the centre of the display as well
06:18 by using these buttons here on the steering wheel.
06:20 Now let's talk about safety tech.
06:21 So you have autonomous emergency braking
06:23 with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
06:26 You have an auto dimming rear vision mirror.
06:28 You have a lane departure warning
06:30 with a lane keeping assistant
06:31 and a lane centring assistant.
06:33 So we'll test that later on.
06:34 Blind spot monitor built into the wing mirror.
06:36 You have rear cross traffic alert, radar cruise control.
06:39 You also have a front and rear parking sensor set
06:44 in addition to a 360 camera.
06:45 And I will show you what that looks like.
06:47 I'm gonna start the car here.
06:49 So there it is.
06:51 Now I'm gonna hit the camera button up the top here
06:52 so we can look out the front.
06:53 So it's actually a pretty decent camera.
06:56 I can see clearly down the front there.
06:58 That's a 360 view.
06:59 That's not as clear.
07:00 It's a bit sort of distorted around the edges,
07:02 but that's fine.
07:03 Hit the camera button again and I can see curb cam.
07:07 And we can also see a super-sized version of that.
07:09 I'll pop this into reverse as well.
07:11 Yeah, look, the quality's okay.
07:14 I think that could be a little bit clearer,
07:16 but for the most part, that is going to do the job just fine.
07:19 And what about our horn test?
07:20 Here it is.
07:21 (horn honking)
07:23 Sounds good.
07:24 (horn honking)
07:25 Moving on to practicality,
07:27 and we'll start off with your connectivity.
07:28 So down the front here, you have a 12-volt outlet.
07:30 You also have a wireless phone charger.
07:33 In the center console here,
07:34 you have a USB-C port and a USB-A port as well.
07:38 What about storing your phone?
07:40 Kind of live anywhere.
07:40 You've got room there on the wireless charger.
07:42 You can pop it here in the cup holder.
07:44 There's plenty of storage spaces there for it.
07:47 Coffee.
07:48 Not quite.
07:50 You've got to prop it up a little bit there with something,
07:52 otherwise you might de-lid your coffee and end up wearing it.
07:56 Bottle storage is fine.
07:57 There are no teeth, but 'cause it's such a deep hole,
08:00 it doesn't really move around too much.
08:02 Storage inside the door is all good.
08:04 We'll try a big bottle as well.
08:06 Look at that.
08:08 It's actually quite impressive there for storage.
08:10 And more storage.
08:11 Center console has a little coin tray up the top,
08:14 and then it's okay.
08:16 It's reasonably sized, not entirely huge.
08:18 We have a glove box down here
08:20 that is actually pretty decently sized,
08:22 and no sunglasses holder.
08:24 It's robbed of space because you switch here
08:26 for the panoramic roof.
08:28 On the comfort front,
08:29 you have dual zone automatic climate control.
08:31 You have seat heating for the front row,
08:34 heated steering wheel.
08:35 You even have massage on the seats,
08:37 which I think is pretty cool.
08:39 In terms of your electric seat adjustment
08:41 for driver and front passenger,
08:42 you can go forwards, backwards.
08:44 Backrest can go forwards, backwards.
08:46 You can lift the front.
08:47 You can lift the back.
08:48 And you also have a lumbar adjustment as well,
08:52 which is very impressive.
08:53 Steering wheel offers both tilts and reach adjustment.
08:57 On our reach test, all of this stuff is easy to reach.
08:59 And I will mention as well,
09:01 love the layout of these seats.
09:02 Look at that quilted pattern on there.
09:04 Quite comfy to sit in as well.
09:06 So a very impressive seat design.
09:08 So second row of the Qashqai.
09:11 So knee room is not too bad.
09:14 Toe room is pretty good.
09:15 And headroom is reasonable.
09:18 It's actually more space back here
09:19 than I thought there was gonna be.
09:20 It's sort of pretty nice and comfortable.
09:23 Air vents in the back here.
09:24 You also have a USB-C outlet, USB-A outlet,
09:27 and then two map pockets.
09:29 A center armrest here with two cup holders.
09:32 Sort of hold the bottle in nicely
09:34 'cause I've got some teeth on the edge there, which is good.
09:37 And then our bottle fits inside the door
09:39 without any dramas.
09:40 And ISOFIX, you have two ISOFIX points
09:43 on the outboard seats and three top tether points.
09:45 And what about our window test?
09:47 Let's give this a shot.
09:48 So auto up and down.
09:50 Let's talk cargo space.
09:55 You've got a powered tailgate.
09:57 Whack that open.
09:59 There it is.
10:02 So in its standard trim here,
10:03 you have a little over 400 litres of cargo space.
10:05 I do like this system,
10:07 how you can adjust the load height
10:09 should you so desire.
10:11 And the good part is that you can hide
10:12 some valuables under there as well,
10:14 'cause you won't be able to see them from the outside.
10:16 In addition to that,
10:17 you also have a cargo blind that goes on top too.
10:19 Under here, you have a space saver spare tyre
10:22 and also the subwoofer as well.
10:24 So it's not a bad little space.
10:26 There's a 12-volt over here as well.
10:28 How does it fit our bags?
10:30 Good question.
10:31 So laptop bag there.
10:32 We'll give this one a crutch just next to it.
10:34 There we go, it all fits in very nicely.
10:37 Then what you can also do,
10:38 you can expand the space a little bit
10:40 just by dropping the second row.
10:42 Once that is out of the way,
10:45 it expands the space to a little over 1500 litres.
10:48 Okay, so we've just hit the road in the Qashqai.
10:56 Now there are two versions of this
10:58 that are gonna be on sale in Australia.
11:00 There will be a turbocharged petrol,
11:02 which is this one,
11:02 and then also a hybrid version as well.
11:05 Turbocharged petrol is interesting.
11:06 It's a 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol.
11:11 It makes 110 kilowatts of power
11:13 and 250 newton metres of torque.
11:16 And that's all mated to a continuously variable transmission.
11:20 How does all that feel behind the wheels?
11:22 So with the CVT, it's not like a typical gearbox
11:25 where you can feel stepped gears.
11:26 With this, if I hit the throttle,
11:28 it kind of just builds up and stays
11:31 at the top of the rev band.
11:32 And that's basically to keep the car
11:34 within its peak power band
11:35 and within its peak torque band as well.
11:38 And then every time you do go for the throttle,
11:40 it will flare up like that.
11:42 One of the big downsides to CVTs
11:44 is they can get really noisy inside the cabin.
11:46 This on the other hand isn't actually too bad.
11:48 When you do step on it,
11:49 it makes noise, but really isn't that bad.
11:53 It's not as thrashy
11:54 as some continuously variable transmissions are.
11:57 In addition to that,
11:57 you can actually virtually create gears
11:59 by using the paddle shifters here on the steering wheel.
12:03 So as you step through those gears,
12:05 it will then hold that.
12:06 We'll see what happens if I floor it.
12:08 It shifts up on its own,
12:10 but it gives you a little bit more control over it,
12:14 unlike a typical gearbox,
12:15 which is just one way or the highway.
12:17 Now, Nissan claims a combined fuel economy
12:19 of just over six litres per 100 Ks.
12:22 We are currently sitting on an average of 8.7.
12:26 So it is higher than the claim.
12:28 We have been doing a fair bit of highway driving
12:30 to get here,
12:31 and then a little bit of faster driving here at the track.
12:34 But yeah, I would have thought that figure
12:35 would be a little lower,
12:36 given how small the engine is.
12:38 But when you do get up it,
12:39 you can feel that it is having to work harder
12:41 because it is inherently smaller capacity
12:43 than an engine of a similar size without a turbocharger.
12:46 So there's probably something worth keeping in mind.
12:49 If you are doing a lot of slower driving
12:50 and you're getting on the throttle a fair bit,
12:52 this probably is gonna be a little thirstier.
12:54 The other downside as well
12:55 is that it requires a minimum 95 RON premium unleaded.
12:59 That is all partly due to Australia's terrible fuel quality.
13:02 Our sulphur content in our unleaded fuel
13:04 is some of the highest in the world.
13:06 So we're amongst third world countries
13:08 in terms of fuel quality,
13:09 and that's why you can't run an engine like this
13:11 on entry level 91 RON,
13:12 because that would have to de-spec it
13:14 to actually get it to work properly.
13:16 I'll point out now as well,
13:17 there is a stop start system.
13:19 Let's see how well that works.
13:21 Come to a stop, wait for that to activate.
13:23 So it doesn't activate until you're fully stopped.
13:28 Fairly smooth as well.
13:29 So yeah, that's not too bad.
13:30 And then you can switch it off down here as well
13:32 if you need to.
13:33 Now let's crank up the speed to 130
13:38 for our sine waves here.
13:39 This simulates overtaking on a country road in Australia,
13:43 and there's also the maximum speed limit
13:45 in Australia as well, 130.
13:47 Whoa, yeah, it is pretty loose at the top end there,
13:54 and that sort of signifies a lack of body control.
13:57 Part of the challenge they have with cars like this,
14:00 they've fitted it with 19 inch alloy wheels,
14:02 which is for appearance to make it look nice,
14:04 but ultimately 19 inch alloy wheel means
14:07 that it is going to be incredibly rough
14:09 in and around the city,
14:09 especially when you hit some bumps and stuff like that.
14:12 So to fix that, they soften it out
14:13 so that you get that sort of artificial smoothness.
14:16 Downside to softening it out
14:17 is that when you do a maneuver like that,
14:19 such as overtaking in the country,
14:21 it will have a lot of hang time
14:22 on those continuous undulations,
14:24 which is what those sine waves simulate.
14:26 So not a big deal if you're driving in and around the city,
14:28 'cause you do get the benefit of good ride comfort
14:31 like you do here,
14:32 but the downside is that if you do any country driving,
14:34 you will have those situations
14:36 where it does carry a fair bit of load
14:40 as it transitions through those undulations.
14:42 Now let's talk drive modes.
14:46 So you use this little selector here,
14:48 you have Eco, which completely dulls the throttle,
14:50 Standard and Sport, and with Sport mode as well,
14:53 you can actually just flick the gear lever
14:55 down to Sport too,
14:56 if you don't wanna have to faff around with that.
14:59 See what this feels like around our track.
15:02 A little body roll there.
15:10 Look, I will preface this by saying,
15:11 obviously you're not going to be driving like this every day,
15:14 but we test every car in the exact same way,
15:18 just so we can make sure we test it in the city,
15:20 and then here on the higher speed stuff
15:22 to see where the limitations are.
15:24 Yeah, look, the softness is probably the Achilles heel here
15:29 when it comes to the faster driving,
15:31 because when you do tip it in,
15:33 it tends to have a lot of that body roll
15:35 that it carries through the corner,
15:37 and as a result of that,
15:38 you are starting to feel the car move underneath you.
15:41 And even under brakes,
15:43 it just feels a little unsure of itself.
15:51 Look, like I said,
15:53 you're probably not going to be driving like this every day,
15:56 but it's just something that we cover off.
15:58 So here comes the back straight.
16:00 We'll see what it feels like on here.
16:02 I'm just gonna pin to the board now.
16:03 Alrighty.
16:07 He's actually still picking up speed here.
16:10 I think it's pretty impressive for a 1.3 litre.
16:12 There you go.
16:15 Yeah, look, that's actually not too bad.
16:16 I'm pretty sort of happy with that.
16:18 Just on the handling front, it's just a tiny bit sloppy.
16:22 Okay, let's do a 0-100 run.
16:25 There is no official time,
16:26 so we've got it hooked up to our GPS measurement system.
16:31 I'm gonna go all the way to 120
16:32 so we can see what the overtake's like.
16:34 We're in sport mode, I'll kill stop start.
16:36 Dive up some revs, here we go.
16:38 Casual off the line.
16:50 All right, here we go.
16:51 There's our hundreds.
16:58 And there's 120.
17:03 All right, come to the stop.
17:05 Let's have a look at our numbers.
17:08 So 0-100 kilometres an hour in 9.94 seconds,
17:13 and then our 80-120 in 7.12 seconds.
17:19 So yeah, you can see there it does taper off a little bit
17:21 as we get higher in the rev band,
17:24 but 0-100 in 10 seconds.
17:26 I would've thought it'd be perhaps a little quicker
17:28 with a turbocharged petrol engine, but there you go.
17:31 And now the test that you either love or hate,
17:34 the reverse speed test.
17:35 Let's see how quickly it'll go.
17:37 It's flat to the board.
17:40 It's all very casual.
17:41 It's actually still picking up speed, okay.
17:45 See what happens here.
17:47 Still going, still going, 64, 65.
17:51 There you go, 65 is our top speed
17:56 over a very long distance.
17:57 Okay, it is time to test out our autonomous driving system.
18:01 So I'm gonna get this up to 70 k's an hour,
18:05 and we will see how it all works.
18:10 So you can see there, once the steering system is active,
18:13 it goes green, green on the lines,
18:15 and it says to us that the car is now steering
18:17 on its own.
18:18 So we're gonna test this in the three outer lanes.
18:21 I have mentioned this in other videos before.
18:22 We're not testing how well the car works on a banked oval.
18:25 What we're doing here is testing to see how well
18:28 the system can apply torque,
18:29 and you get a lot of torque requirement
18:32 up on that outer bank there,
18:33 and the better cars that work better on road
18:35 in terms of the steering assist systems
18:37 typically tend to work better here as well.
18:38 So it's passing lane one, which is great.
18:40 So we'll move over to our second lane.
18:45 We'll let that lock on.
18:47 Wait for that to go green.
18:50 There it is.
18:53 So I'll just let go of the steering wheel a little bit there.
18:55 If you're using this on the road,
18:56 you have to have full control over the car.
18:58 I wanna see how well it performs.
18:59 We're actually staying well off that left line as well.
19:02 It's holding everything really nicely there.
19:05 Cool, so that's a pass there.
19:06 We'll see if it'll activate up here.
19:08 A lot of cars don't like this,
19:10 but we have had some passes up here,
19:12 so we'll see how well this works.
19:15 I'll just wait and see if that activates.
19:18 Yeah, it's not loving it.
19:21 Still nothing.
19:25 Yeah, it's not even activating here at all,
19:28 so we can't really test to see how well it works.
19:31 So yeah, it's a pass in lane one and two,
19:32 but yeah, nothing here for lane three.
19:34 We're not even getting the lane assist feature come on.
19:38 Let's talk about road noise.
19:40 It's actually pretty quiet, sort of at highway speeds,
19:43 especially on course-shift roads.
19:44 There isn't a great deal of noise coming into the cabin.
19:46 I think they've gone to a lot of effort to insulate
19:49 not only road noise, but also engine noise,
19:51 and you can really feel that behind the wheel
19:52 is quite good compared to some of its peers in this segment.
19:56 On the towing front,
19:57 not that you're gonna be doing much towing with this,
19:58 but you can tow up to 1500 kilo with a braked trailer,
20:02 and turning circle comes in at just over 11 metres.
20:05 Okay, let's talk visibility.
20:06 So I can see clearly down the front there, no dramas.
20:09 Big wing mirrors as well
20:10 with the blind spot monitor built into those.
20:12 Visibility out the back is okay.
20:13 It's quite a narrow envelope, but it's not too bad.
20:17 (car engine roaring)
20:20 So Nissan Qashqai, it is expensive, definitely,
20:25 but I think they've actually loaded this
20:27 with so much technology and equipment
20:29 that it really helps justify the price.
20:31 And if you are looking for a car
20:33 that is gonna cost you a bit more,
20:35 but make you feel actually good about owning it,
20:37 I think this is gonna be it.
20:38 It is let down by a couple of small things.
20:40 So on the body control front,
20:42 when we went for our sort of faster drive there,
20:44 you can see that it's not quite
20:45 as well resolved as it could be,
20:47 but the offshoot of that is that it is nice
20:49 in and around the city.
20:49 So I guess it just depends exactly
20:51 what you're trying to use the car for
20:53 and its intended purposes.
20:54 So let me know in the comments section down below,
20:56 do you think it is too expensive?
20:58 Despite sort of what you get with it?
20:59 And what do you think of the design as well?
21:01 I'm keen to get your feedback.
