00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. So the first SUV coupe in the medium SUV segment is actually from
00:07 Haval, which we weren't expecting. We thought it would be from one of the
00:10 European or Japanese brands. This is called the Haval H6 GT. So it's based on the H6,
00:17 which we've reviewed previously, but it has a coupe shape to it at the rear there.
00:22 This one here is the top specification model. It's called the Ultra. It's priced at a little
00:26 over $46,000 drive away. But if that's too expensive, the entire H6 GT range kicks off at
00:33 just under $41,000 drive away. Now being the first in the segment, this actually doesn't have any
00:38 other competitors, but in general, the H6 competes with things like the Hyundai Tucson, the MG HS.
00:44 It's that type of SUV, and there are a stack of them in this segment. So we're going to do a
00:49 detailed review of this car. So if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:53 you can use the timecards on the screen, or if you're on YouTube, you can scroll down and use
00:57 the chapters below. And if you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel, press the bell
01:00 icon, because that's going to tell you every single time we review one of these cars.
01:04 Now let's talk about exterior design. Colours. You've got four to choose from. All but white
01:10 will cost you just under $500, so pretty reasonable in my opinion. What about the
01:14 design? Look, I think the H6 in general actually looks pretty good. You know, a coupe SUV,
01:19 I generally don't like them because I think they look a bit silly. This one is probably
01:23 the exception to the rule. It actually doesn't look terrible. Now I've seen a couple out on
01:27 the road now and I think it's actually a fairly smart looking car. Everyone I tell about this,
01:31 they're quite surprised that it's come from a brand that's relatively new to Australia as
01:35 opposed to one of the more established ones. Down the bottom here, you've got a big grille
01:40 there, so that cools the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that we'll run through a little
01:44 later on. You have some faux vents up the top here, radar sensor down the bottom there,
01:49 and a camera down the front here for the 360 camera, the Haval badge just there. I'm interested,
01:54 if you're Chinese and you're watching this, how do you pronounce that correctly? I'm very
01:59 curious to know how that works. Down the bottom here, you've got some faux carbon and then it
02:03 sort of tapers down to a little bit of piano black trim down the bottom there. Over on the
02:07 headlights, you have a set of full LED headlights. You also have an LED daytime running light and
02:13 LED indicator as well. LED fog lights down the bottom, and then let's whip around to the side.
02:18 Now, around here, you've got a set of 19-inch alloy wheels. It's a piano black finish,
02:23 and the interesting thing with the tyre is that it's a Michelin tyre. It's not Pilot Sport,
02:27 but it is still a decent tyre for this type of car. 235mm wide on all four corners as well,
02:33 so it should make a decent amount of traction. This is the all-wheel drive version as well.
02:37 Above the wheels there, you've got this black cladding. Now, this isn't really an off-road
02:42 vehicle, but surprisingly, the H6 actually performed pretty well when we did our off-road
02:46 test. If you want to see all of that in action, click up there to watch that video. But outside
02:51 of that, 165mm of ground clearance for the GT, so it's not exactly going to be an off-road
02:57 friendly vehicle. Now, up the top here, you've got piano black on that top section of the mirror.
03:02 You have a camera built into there and also an LED indicator. Now, this side profile is
03:08 interesting. This whole front section kind of looks exactly like the H6, but then it sort of
03:11 flows along the back there and rises a little bit. You'll see up the top here, you've got that
03:16 black roof rail, panoramic glass roof, privacy glass. You can see the edges of this wing here
03:22 as well. Actually, before we go to the back, have a look at this too. We've actually just
03:25 reviewed an M4 Competition with the optional carbon package. This has like a bit of a version
03:32 of that for a bit of aero there. Let's come around to the back. You can see that other
03:36 element of that spoiler that I just mentioned. You've got a shark fin aerial up the top there.
03:40 This is all nice and super clean because there isn't a wiper built into there.
03:45 This sits really high and I'll be interested when we go for a drive to see what
03:49 vision is like out the back because not only does it sit high, you've got this
03:53 piano black spoiler built into the boot lid there. More of that faux carbon there. LED tail lights,
03:59 reflectors down the bottom here. GWM, which stands for Great Wall Motors.
04:03 HAVL up the top here and then H6 GT with four-wheel drive. Now, I did mention this in our
04:10 other H6 review. I find it really bizarre that they have these left over from what I assume is
04:15 the bigger number plates they use in China. So, it's a little disappointing that you can't really
04:19 cover that up if you go for a slimline plate. Our standard large number plates look a little
04:23 bit ugly. So, yeah. Faux exhaust pipes down the bottom here as well. So, let me know what you
04:28 think about the design. Is this the first coupe SUV you like the look of? Let me know your thoughts
04:33 down there. So, we are inside the H6 GT. We'll start off with the key. So, you have panic, lock,
04:40 boot, unlock and then on the back you have HAVL. This is a proximity sensing key. So,
04:46 you can leave that in your pocket. Once you're inside, you have a push button start.
04:50 Now, sorry if there's noise during this video. There's other testing going on today at The
04:53 Proving Grounds. You're going to hear a little bit of stuff in the background. So, I said this
04:56 before with our other H6 review. This is a beautifully presented interior and I think if
05:01 you compare this to the other SUVs in the segment, HAVL has really gone to a lot of effort here to
05:06 make sure that this is nicely presented. You've got these super high resolution screens that are
05:09 neatly fitted to the cabin. Soft touch materials along the dashboard here. Minimal use of piano
05:15 black aside from this little front section. Really is quite an elegant and classy looking
05:19 interior, especially when you can see the top spec of this car is just under $46,000 drive away.
05:25 And then the GT adds some premium touches. You've got this GT insignia here in the seat.
05:30 Let me know whether you think, if I get my phone out here, whether you think that looks similar to
05:35 that. Interesting. In addition to that, you've got that sort of Alcantara material on the seat and
05:42 also here in the centre section. Now, what about your touch points? So, that is nice and soft.
05:48 Same on the door there. Really nice and comfortable. How soft is it? Well, we've got our
05:51 durometer. We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin. If you want to see how this car compares
05:56 to other cars we've tested before, have a look at the link in the description below.
05:59 Now, build quality. What is it like?
06:01 Tiny bit loose there, but for the most part, this actually all feels really nice.
06:06 And do you have a Havel H6? What's it been like in the long run in terms of build quality? Let
06:11 me know in the comment section and then door test. That sounds really good.
06:16 Now, let's talk about infotainment. So, you have two sets of screens inside the cabin here. You
06:21 have a 12.3 inch display and then a 10.25 inch display. Both of these are really high resolution
06:27 and I even love the fact that with the screen here ahead of the driver, it has an active
06:31 animation. It's not overly distracting and it's always sort of running in the background there,
06:35 spinning around slowly. It's like the globe. And then as you move through the different drive
06:38 modes, you'll see when we go for a drive, it changes the screen there and the way that looks.
06:42 Here on the main infotainment display, it's all pretty straightforward, but it can be a little
06:47 bit fiddly to use while you're driving. And a good example of that is the air conditioning.
06:51 While you're driving, there's no sort of immediate controls here that allow you to
06:54 change things like temperature. You've got to kind of just focus in on this and press up and down,
06:59 or you have to go to like the full menu and then faff around with that a little bit as well,
07:03 which is a little bit annoying, but it's okay. Over here on the radio front, you only have AM
07:08 and FM radio. There's no DAB digital radio. There's also no inbuilt satellite navigation.
07:13 It's all driven through smartphone mirroring. So, you do have to hook up an Android or an Apple
07:18 smartphone for that to work. In terms of that, you have both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
07:22 They're both wired. I'll show you what Apple CarPlay looks like to start with.
07:25 So, full screen integration, nice and high resolution and quick and snappy there as well.
07:31 You can drive voice commands through that as you go. And this is what Android Auto looks like.
07:35 So, there you go. Another full screen integration. You'll notice here as I go to the menu,
07:40 the maps move over here instead. All nice and quick as well. Forgot to mention earlier that
07:46 it has an eight-speaker sound system. Sound system's good, nothing sort of spectacular,
07:50 but it's there anyway in case you want to listen to your AM or FM radio or the music through
07:54 your smartphone mirroring. Now, when I say safety tech, so you have autonomous emergency braking
07:59 that works forwards and reverse. It has pedestrian and cyclist detection in addition to junction
08:05 detection as well. So, it is quite a sophisticated setup. You have an auto-dimming rear vision
08:10 mirror. Over on the wing mirrors, you have blind spot monitoring built into those. You have radar
08:14 cruise control with lane-keeping assistant and a lane departure warning. We will test that
08:19 technology a little bit later on when we go for a drive. You have rear cross-traffic alerts. Then,
08:24 on the parking front, you have both front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera.
08:28 So, I'll show you what that looks like. The quality of that is fantastic. Like,
08:33 this is probably the best quality reversing camera I've seen on a car today, which is pretty awesome.
08:39 So, you can clearly see what our suitcase says there. You've got guidelines that move with
08:43 the steering wheel. You have distances over here in centimetres. You can switch that over to a 3D
08:48 view that you can then control if required. Then, in addition to that, you can also zoom into
08:54 certain areas of the car. So, you can see that's the back wheels. Switch over to the front wheels
08:58 as well. And then, you also have a super zoomed-in view. In addition to that, you also have a trailer
09:04 view as well if you do want to mount a trailer to the car. Now, these two buttons just here are
09:09 interesting. So, you have a semi-autonomous parking feature. So, that will help park the
09:12 car for you. But in addition to that, you also have this feature here. So, it's a bit of a reverse
09:18 trail assistant. So, it will remember your last set of reversing manoeuvres and will then mimic
09:24 that. So, that's useful if you're stuck down one way street or a narrow street or something and
09:28 you're not confident reversing. We actually demonstrated this tech in a video that we shot
09:32 recently. So, you can click up there to watch that and see it all in action. Now, let's check
09:36 out practicality. And we'll start off with your connectivity. So, they're a little bit hard to
09:39 find but you've got USB ports down here. On my side, you have a 12-volt outlet there too. Got a
09:45 USB-A port up the top here for dash cam integration. Phone, you can store that kind of in a
09:50 number of places here. But you have a wireless charging pad up the front there. A little slot
09:54 there for your phone as well. There it is, a stack of options. Coffee. Now, I did notice this morning
10:00 on the way here that it kind of gets lost in there. A little bit hard to retrieve as well. So,
10:04 you kind of have to prop that up a little bit. But you do have these removable teeth there just
10:08 in case you want to hold anything bigger in there. So, our bottle, see how that goes. Fits in without
10:13 any dramas and it also fits inside the door. But I reckon this big bottle might fit in here. Yeah,
10:21 it does. If you shift that thing out of the way, it fits in there. And yeah, it fits inside the
10:26 door as well. So, not bad. Now, other storage. You've got one slot down here just near the
10:30 driver's knee. You've got a very generous center console here. You have all of this storage down
10:36 the bottom there. Loads of room. You have a glove box here as well. And finally, you have a
10:41 sunglasses holder. In terms of comfort, you're pretty well equipped here as well. You have dual
10:45 zone automatic climate control. In addition to that, you have heated and cooled seats for the
10:52 front row. You have a heated steering wheel. Seat adjustment comes in the form of electric for
10:57 driver and front passenger. With the driver, you can go forwards, backwards. You can lift the back.
11:01 You can also move the backrest. You also have lumbar adjustment. But there is a problem. This
11:07 seating position is really not very good. So, I noticed when I was driving here and previously
11:12 when I've driven the H6, I just constantly feel like I'm sliding out of the seat. You can't lift
11:17 the front of it up. And as a result of that, you're always hunched forward. The steering wheel
11:22 also doesn't offer a great deal of adjustment. So, you can go up and down, in and out. But I don't
11:27 know, the steering wheel itself just doesn't really sit nicely in the hands. You constantly
11:31 feel like you're on edge with it. Yes, the driving position could be a whole lot better. But, you
11:38 know, outside of that, the seats are actually quite comfortable themselves, just not comfortable in
11:42 terms of the configuration of them. Then on our reach test, all of this stuff is easy to reach
11:47 while you're driving. Now, second row of the H6 GT. I really like this space. I have loads of
11:54 knee room. Headroom is excellent and toe room is fantastic as well. And look at this. This is an
12:00 all-wheel drive and they have like the world's smallest driveline hub. So, it really just
12:04 baffles me how other manufacturers can't do stuff like this. Anyway, the quality continues back here
12:10 as well. So, they continue that Alcantara treatment, that faux carbon, really is just very
12:15 premium looking in the back here. Matt pockets in the back of the seats. You have two USB-A
12:20 outlets plus air conditioning vents as well. Seats have that similar design to the front, so
12:27 very premium looking. A word that I keep using here. Center armrest, two cup holders with rubber
12:32 teeth in there as well to make sure your bottle doesn't move around too much. Bottle can fit
12:37 inside the door as well, although it doesn't really have a cutout for the bottle. So, it just
12:42 sort of has to wedge in there a little bit. And also, you have ISOFIX points on the two outboard
12:47 seats with three top tether points. And finally, our window test. So, it's auto up and down.
12:52 So close. Almost went all the way down. Now, let's talk cargo space. Normally, with these
12:59 coupe SUVs, you're robbed of cargo space. You've got a power tailgate. Look how big that tailgate
13:04 is. It's like enormous. So, when it does open, you are afforded just under 400 litres of cargo
13:10 space. You have storage off to the sides here with a 12-volt outlet as well. That boot floor is quite
13:16 high, so when you are loading things in, you're probably going to have to lug them over a little
13:20 bit. Under the cargo floor, you have a SpaceSaver spare tyre. I'll show you what it's like with our
13:26 bags in there. There you go. So, the space isn't too bad. It's more just when you look at the
13:33 height of it that you're going to get robbed of space when it comes to loading larger items in.
13:38 What you can do, though, is expand the space a little bit by reaching in all the way through
13:43 here, dropping that second row, and that expands the space to just under 1,400 litres.
13:50 So, we've just hit the road in the H6 GT. Now, powering this, it's an interesting engine. So,
13:59 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine makes 150 kilowatts of power and 320
14:06 newton metres of torque. So, a little bit of pep to it, a bit of spice to it. And the interesting
14:11 thing is, when I first switched this on, I thought, "Is that an exhaust note I hear?" So,
14:16 when you do rev it on the spot, this is what it sounds like.
14:18 So, it's pretty cool to see they've actually engineered a bit of an exhaust sound,
14:28 and hopefully once we go for a bit of a fang, it matches it in terms of performance.
14:32 Now, that's all mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and that dual-clutch
14:37 transmission really isn't great. And, I don't know, it's one of the things that I dislike the
14:41 most about the H6, just in general, and it's just how sort of clunky it feels at low speed.
14:46 It's very sort of on/off, and it's not very smooth. So, they obviously haven't learnt a
14:50 great deal from Volkswagen, who seems to have kind of perfected the dual-clutch gearbox. Now,
14:54 this still feels just a little bit underdone when it comes to just the way that it feels
14:59 behind the wheel. And the other downside as well is that when you are just sort of
15:02 tootling along and you go to stab the throttle, it's just a fairly decent lag between it sort of
15:10 being in the gear that it's in and grabbing the next gear. And the whole purpose of a dual-clutch
15:15 is, yes, to aid efficiency, but it's also for that speed, and this doesn't really have that
15:20 gear change speed that you would expect with a performance-oriented dual-clutch.
15:25 Now, unlike the entry-level, this uses an on-demand all-wheel-drive system,
15:30 and as a result of that, you are going to use a little bit more fuel than just the two-wheel
15:34 drive at the entry-level, but it should mean that you get a slight bit more performance when you do
15:38 step on it. Surprisingly, if you do want to do any towing, 2,000 kilogram brake to towing capacity,
15:43 so that's actually pretty good for an SUV in this segment. Now, Havel claims a combined fuel
15:48 economy of 8 litres per 100 kilometres. We are currently sitting on 10.2, so a little bit higher.
15:56 We have been doing our sort of faster driving here in the morning just to see what it was like, and
16:00 yeah, look, I think 10 litres per 100 kilometres is pretty reasonable for a vehicle this size.
16:05 And the other good news as well is that it can be powered by just basic,
16:09 regular unleaded fuel. You don't need to go for the premium stuff.
16:12 Now, what's it like when you do step on it? You've got normal, sport, eco, snow,
16:17 race, sand, off-road. I'm going to flick this into race mode,
16:21 see what this is like. It actually makes the exhaust louder immediately.
16:29 Bit of body roll there. It's actually not too bad. It's got a sort of half decent mid-range.
16:37 And the all-wheel drive system seems to actually be quite effective when you're ploughing through
16:44 the corner there. If this was just front-wheel drive, it would really push wide at the front
16:50 there, but it's hoofing along nicely. Look at our back section here. Yeah, I really don't like this
16:56 steering wheel. It is hard to hold onto properly, especially through these corners, and you're kind
17:02 of having to really have a death grip on it. That's the other thing I noticed as well. If you
17:08 catch the brakes a little bit too hard, it brings up the hazard lights. It thinks you're going to
17:14 have a big moment. All right, here's our back straight. We'll see what it's like through here.
17:19 You can go into manual mode as well, but the gearbox seems to be doing a decent enough job
17:23 in race. All right, foot flat to the board. Picking up speed okay, actually. It's not too bad.
17:32 There you go. Yeah, and that kind of brings up the next point, the brakes. Wow, I did notice this
17:40 morning when I was going for a couple of faster laps that the brakes just really don't feel like
17:44 they have enough in them to actually pull you up, so I think the brakes could definitely do with
17:49 some work, but just in general, it actually sort of gets along okay. There is a fair degree of body
17:54 roll and the body control isn't fantastic when the speed picks up, so they're kind of halfway
18:00 there with it, but yeah, it desperately needs a bigger set of brakes and probably suspension
18:04 that's capable of handling some of those direction changes a little bit better, but
18:08 yeah, look, for the most part, it's actually okay. It's not too bad. It's smile-inducing to some
18:13 degree. Now, Havel doesn't have an official 0-100 time, so I'm going to put it up against our
18:21 GPS measurement device here and see how it goes. I'm going to stick it in
18:26 race mode because, you know, race, why not? We'll see what happens. Here we go.
18:30 Gear shift there, one-two was pretty strong.
18:41 All right, there we are, so we'll come to a stop. Let's have a look at our numbers there.
18:48 So 0-100 in 8.2 seconds and then our overtaking test, 80-120 in 5.7 seconds, so yeah, those gear
18:57 shifts are pretty brutal there. It doesn't really have a launch control, not that I can tell, so I
19:02 think with a launch control, it could be a little quicker given it has a dual clutch, but yeah,
19:06 8 seconds thereabouts isn't too bad. Okay, so time to see how quick the H6 GT will go in reverse. So
19:14 there's reversal, see what happens. Here we go.
19:16 Oh, it is moving. That's not too bad, so 54 k's an hour in reverse.
19:33 Very impressive, so if you do need to get away from anyone, the H6 GT has you back.
19:37 Let's talk about the ride. So in and around the city, it's actually quite nice. It's got
19:43 enough softness to it, but it can be a little firm at times. It's got that sort of sporty tune to it,
19:48 but it rides well with these tyres, which is what I like. It'll do speed humps,
19:52 cobblestones, all that sort of stuff really nicely and gently, but it's when the speed
19:57 picks up a little bit that it can be not great and that affects its handling through corners.
20:02 We've got our sine waves coming up here. I'm going to dial up 130. It just really doesn't
20:07 have a great deal of body control when the speed picks up, and these are the type of roads you're
20:12 going to see in the country when you are sort of hoofing along at a normal speed, especially if
20:17 you do have a bunch of passengers on board. So here's 130. Oh man, it like literally just
20:23 catches the top end of the suspension run there. It really just doesn't have any control at the
20:29 top end. We saw that with the Haval H6, normal SUV as well, and it obviously hasn't been improved
20:34 here for the GT, and ultimately that's going to affect your handling if you do try and go for a
20:38 sportier drive because you'll hit a bump mid-corner and the thing will just float over the road,
20:42 and it really just isn't confidence-inspiring. Let's talk tyre noise. So it is actually not too
20:48 bad, the noise that you're getting from your tyres and also road noise. It's a pretty quiet cabin
20:53 at highway speeds, so the noise insulation is fantastic. So I think they've done a really
20:57 good job there, and it's going to mean that if you do a long-distance trip with the family,
21:01 it's not going to drive you nuts every time you hit a coarse, cheap section of road.
21:04 Visibility, what's that like? So, commanding driving position, I can clearly see down the
21:09 front of the car there. The wing mirrors are nice and big as well, so I have good visibility down
21:13 the side of the car. We've got our blind spot monitor there too. The back visibility though
21:17 is really, really poor. So I mentioned at the start of the video, that boot is huge,
21:21 and it sits so high up that when you look out the back, it's a tiny little envelope,
21:25 and you can barely see anything out that back window, and I think that's really disappointing.
21:29 You know, you can have your coupe SUV design, but ultimately I need to be able to see out of
21:34 the car, and in this instance I really can't see all that well. They can fix that with stuff like
21:39 a digital mirror, but that's not an option here in Australia. Turning circle comes in at 12 metres,
21:44 which is pretty big, but typical of an all-wheel drive vehicle. Now, we have a new test that we're
21:49 doing here, and it's basically a test to see how well the lane centring and lane departure
21:55 warning systems work. So this has a number of different assists for your lane departure. So
22:00 you have a warning, lane keeping, and then lane centring. The difference between those is lane
22:06 keeping will nudge you back in, but you still have control of the wheel. Lane centring will
22:10 actually control your steering wheel while you're going around bends. We test this in three lanes,
22:16 so the second lane on the ball, third lane, fourth lane, and then we'll see how it works.
22:20 It will progressively get harder and we will be able to pass or fail it on each of these lanes.
22:25 Good system will work on all three, bad system will have some variation of in-between. So
22:30 I'm going to put the cruise control on here at 70 k's an hour. So we currently have it on lane
22:36 centring, seems to be doing an okay job here. Obviously while you're driving you have to keep
22:41 your hands on the steering wheel, but we're just doing this for testing purposes. Up on the head
22:46 up display it comes up with a little symbol there telling me that it has detected these lanes and
22:51 it's keeping it centred. That beep that you just heard was it telling me to keep my hands on the
22:55 steering wheel. So I'm going to move up to lane two now. Wait for this to go green, then I'll
23:03 let go of the steering wheel. So it's still detecting those lanes. There it is, it's green.
23:08 So I'm going to let go of the steering wheel now.
23:12 It's not doing a very good job, it's kind of going over that lane. There we go. So it's fixed
23:17 itself up there and is currently steering itself okay. It is quite close to that lane.
23:22 That's a warning about holding the steering wheel and then it's just disengaged itself there. It's
23:27 back again. It's gone now. Not great. Let's move up to the highest lane here on the bowl.
23:37 Wait for that to detect and go green. Still detecting, still detecting, nothing's coming up.
23:45 I don't even think this is going to work. Yeah, it kind of half sees the lane there but it doesn't
23:52 really. So if I let go of the wheel here it's just going to disappear off into that
23:57 sort of direction. I'll try once more up the top here.
24:02 No, it's not working here at all. So it is a pass for lane one, a kind of pass for lane two,
24:08 and then lane three it's a fail. It's just not working at all. So a little bit disappointing.
24:13 If you do want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested before on this exact test,
24:17 have a look at the link in the description below.
24:19 So the Haval H6 GT, I think in terms of price and features and also design, it actually looks
24:29 pretty good, especially in that sort of dark green colour. It really strikes a pose, it has a good
24:34 presence out on the road, it does all that stuff great. But it has the GT title and it's, you know,
24:39 it's okay but it's not amazing. I think the suspension really needs some work, they need to
24:44 do some local run and handling tuning on that. The brakes need some work as well, especially if
24:48 you're going to be doing some sportier driving, and probably the gearbox as well. So yeah, look,
24:53 it is fine for driving in and around the city, it has enough punch for overtaking and stuff like
24:57 that. But if you do want to have a bit of a sportier drive and have a bit of a punt, because
25:00 you know, you enjoy your weekends, this probably isn't quite going to fit the bill. So let me know
25:06 in the comments section below, what do you think about this? Are you all that fussed that the ride
25:10 isn't that great? Or are you happy to just take it because it looks pretty good and is excellent
25:14 value for money? Let me know what you think in the comments section below. Now if you did enjoy
