The Great Wall Motors Cannon/Poer is longer than a Ford Ranger and a Toyota HiLux. It's huge! Plus, it has a folding step built into the tailgate. When it came to utes, made-in-China was never really a good thing, but the 2021 Great Wall Motors Cannon (also known as the Poer) aims to change that. But, as you all know, I don't listen to marketing spin. So join Paul Maric in a detailed review of the 2021 GWM Cannon-L. Includes some light off-roading.

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:00 So, dual cab utes are big business in Australia.
00:03 In fact, last year, the two best selling cars
00:06 in the entire country were both utes,
00:09 or backies, or trucks, whatever you call them.
00:10 In fact, let me know in the comments section below
00:12 what you call them, where you're from.
00:14 This here is the Great Wall Motors Canon.
00:17 So the Chinese brands are trying to get in
00:20 on the big business of dual cab utes in Australia.
00:23 And up until now, they were all, I don't know,
00:25 not that fantastic.
00:26 This is one that is hoping to buck the trend.
00:29 It's priced at just under $38,000.
00:31 This one here is the mid-specification.
00:33 It competes with things like the Toyota Hilux,
00:36 the Ford Ranger, the Isuzu D-Max.
00:38 So today we're going to do a detailed review of this car.
00:42 I always say car, but a lot of you complain
00:44 about this dual cab utility.
00:47 If you do wanna skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:49 you can use the time codes up on the screen there.
00:51 Or if you're on YouTube,
00:52 just scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:54 And if you haven't done so already,
00:55 make sure you subscribe to our channel
00:57 and press the bell icon
00:58 so you can find out every single time
01:00 we review a new car, truck, or ute.
01:03 Okay, let's talk exterior.
01:05 You've got five external colors to choose from.
01:08 All but white is an additional $595.
01:11 Look how tall this thing is.
01:13 I don't know, normally these dual cab utes
01:15 don't come up that high on me.
01:17 It's got this enormous front end on it.
01:19 The grille is absolutely huge and it has stacks of chrome.
01:23 I also thought Mercedes-Benz was going to be challenger
01:26 for the world's biggest logo on the front,
01:28 but that is huge.
01:29 You could sort of take that off
01:30 and serve up dinner with it.
01:32 But what do you think about the design?
01:33 I actually don't think it looks that bad.
01:35 Yes, all the chrome is a little bit over the top,
01:37 but it really does stand out in traffic,
01:39 especially with this blue color.
01:40 They've offset some of the body colors here
01:42 with darker tones down the bottom.
01:44 And then you can see here with the headlights,
01:46 full LED headlights with LED daytime running lights.
01:50 And we'll whip around to the side.
01:51 You get 18-inch alloy wheels, not a bad wheel design.
01:54 You've got that chromey look on the outside
01:56 and then the darker tones on the inside.
01:59 Matey set of highway terrain tires there as well.
02:02 Great wall logo off to the side.
02:03 And if we hop up here, there's a camera here
02:06 because this has a 360 degree camera,
02:08 which I think is one of the first in the segment.
02:11 So I'm keen to see how that looks.
02:13 Side steps along the side there with a little chisel.
02:16 They've got a plastic outer edge on them.
02:17 So I don't know how good this kind of stuff
02:19 is going to be for off-roading.
02:21 Privacy glass, roof rails.
02:23 You get a sports bar along the back
02:25 and then come around to the rear.
02:27 LED taillights nestled into there.
02:30 And have a look at how tall this is.
02:32 I'm 185 centimetres tall and this is sitting up,
02:35 I don't know if it's the ground that's lower where I am
02:37 or if this is just exceptionally tall, but this is massive.
02:40 So let's talk dimensions.
02:42 It's just over 5.4 metres long.
02:44 To put that into context,
02:46 a Ford Ranger is about 5.3 metres, just under 5.4.
02:49 So it's longer than a traditional ute.
02:52 Now let's have a look at the tray here
02:53 because some of this stuff I find really interesting.
02:55 So you've got the logo there, a little bit of chrome there,
02:58 but have a look at this.
02:59 So we have hydraulics for releasing this.
03:02 It means when it comes down, it's softly padded
03:04 and it's also easy to lift up as well.
03:06 Now the reason they've done that
03:08 is because in here there's something hiding.
03:10 So push of this, crack this out.
03:13 You've got a step.
03:14 That means you're able to climb into the tray
03:16 and retrieve things.
03:16 You would have seen this on something like an F-150.
03:19 I think that's where they got the inspiration from.
03:21 We'll see if it supports plus sized men.
03:25 (tray thuds)
03:26 It does.
03:27 It all feels good.
03:28 It didn't fall apart.
03:30 Do that on the way down.
03:31 Now in terms of the tray dimensions themselves,
03:33 it's a bit like a square.
03:34 It's a little over 1.5 metres deep and 1.5 metres wide.
03:38 And then this mid spec gets the spray in tub liner as well.
03:43 Pop this away.
03:43 And finally you have a 3000 kilogram breaked towing capacity
03:48 with a 300 kilogram down ball weight provision.
03:52 Okay, we are inside the Great Wall Motors cannon.
03:56 Let's start with the key.
03:57 Here it is here.
03:58 You have lock, unlock, panic, remote start function.
04:03 And then you have a little bit of silver on the side there.
04:05 And then the Great Wall logo on the back.
04:08 It's a proximity sensing key.
04:10 So you just leave that in your pocket,
04:11 grab the door handle to unlock the car.
04:13 And then you have a push button start.
04:16 Okay, let's talk styling to begin with.
04:18 Look, it all looks fine.
04:19 Nothing too outrageous here.
04:21 It looks fairly modern.
04:22 You can see the piano black highlights,
04:24 which I'm not a massive fan of,
04:25 but they're broken up by all this silver detail.
04:28 And then it's a pretty cool looking
04:29 gear stick there as well.
04:31 All of this is really hard plastic.
04:34 This is a little soft here,
04:35 but the rest of this is pretty scratchy.
04:37 So it is going to be fairly rough and tumble and strong
04:40 if it's gonna be used as a work vehicle.
04:43 So I guess that's better than having something fancy
04:45 that you're gonna wreck,
04:46 but it doesn't feel quite as premium
04:48 as some of the more established competitors in this segment.
04:52 What about your touch points though?
04:53 So that feels nice and so does that.
04:56 Now in terms of the touch points,
04:58 we've tested those with our geometer.
05:00 If you wanna see how they compare to other vehicles
05:02 we've tested before,
05:03 scroll down and have a look at the link
05:05 in the description below.
05:06 Now, what about build quality?
05:07 Does cheap mean cheap?
05:09 No, look, it all feels okay.
05:11 I mean, we haven't owned the car for years,
05:13 but basically the testing we've done so far
05:16 has been pretty good.
05:17 So let's see if it stands the test of time.
05:21 Okay, let's talk infotainment.
05:23 Nine inch infotainment system.
05:25 It's a pretty basic infotainment system,
05:27 but it does the job, I guess.
05:29 So I'll run you through just a sort of brief overview
05:32 of how it works and the features that it has.
05:34 So in terms of radio, you have AM and FM radio,
05:37 no DAB plus digital radio there.
05:39 There is no inbuilt navigation,
05:41 but it does come with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
05:45 Both of those are wired, not wireless.
05:47 I'll show you what Android Auto looks like to start with.
05:50 There you go.
05:50 So full screen integration,
05:51 that looks nice and works well.
05:53 There is no voice recognition button on the steering wheel.
05:56 So if you do need to use voice recognition,
05:57 you've got to manually come into here
05:59 and then select it yourself.
06:01 Let's have a look at what Apple CarPlay looks like.
06:04 There you go, full screen as well.
06:05 Whoops.
06:06 Okay, it's, oh, that's weird.
06:09 It's like slightly not responsive.
06:11 It doesn't really notice when you try and swipe,
06:15 but yeah, full screen integration
06:16 and it looks nice and sharp there too.
06:18 So same story, voice recognition, you come into here
06:21 and you have to push and hold to get Siri to respond.
06:24 Okay, what about safety?
06:26 So this hasn't been crash tested yet.
06:28 And I say that because the last generation of this Ute
06:32 crashed very poorly in crash tests.
06:34 So it is probably worth just hanging out
06:36 a little bit longer to see how that performs.
06:37 But in terms of standard safety equipment,
06:40 they've actually thrown the feature book at it,
06:41 which makes me confident that they've fixed the issues
06:43 of the previous gen models.
06:44 So you have autonomous emergency braking
06:47 with pedestrian detection.
06:48 You have an auto dimming rear vision mirror.
06:50 You have a lane keeping assistant
06:51 and a lane departure warning.
06:53 A blind spot monitor built into this wing mirror
06:55 and also adaptive cruise control.
06:57 Now in terms of reverse view camera,
06:59 you have front and rear parking sensors
07:01 and a 360 degree camera.
07:04 Let's have a look at what that looks like.
07:06 So you can see there, 360 degree view.
07:08 You also have the rear view.
07:09 It's actually quite sharp.
07:11 So the vision here is great.
07:12 You can then go full rear view.
07:14 You've also got the option to go to
07:16 like a side mirror view as well.
07:19 So there it is there.
07:20 You can see the front wheels.
07:21 And there is another 3D view that sometimes comes up,
07:26 sometimes doesn't.
07:28 So Igor, if you open your door, it comes up
07:30 and then close it.
07:34 Then disappears and won't let us bring that up again.
07:38 So yeah, look, it's,
07:39 and then it's got other things like the writing up
07:42 at the top here that is in English.
07:43 So yeah, it's a really good implementation,
07:45 but it just does some really strange things, unfortunately.
07:48 Righto, let's talk about practicality.
07:50 We'll start with connectivity.
07:51 We'll get rid of this first.
07:53 So you have two USB ports down the front here.
07:55 One is for smartphone mirroring.
07:56 One is just for charging.
07:58 You have a 12 volt outlet, but similar to the Ford Ranger,
08:01 there is also a USB port up the top here
08:03 for dash cam installation.
08:05 So clever integration there.
08:06 And then on the storage front, we'll start with the phone.
08:08 You can easily sit it down the front there.
08:11 There's also a slot here,
08:12 but it doesn't really fit bigger phones
08:14 and they sort of fit in the cup holders.
08:17 In terms of cups themselves,
08:19 we've got our small coffee cup here.
08:21 Fits in nice and easily
08:22 and plenty of clearance there for the lid.
08:24 I'll try a bottle as well.
08:26 No dramas there.
08:27 Nice teeth on the side there to keep everything in check.
08:31 And then you also have bottle storage inside the door.
08:34 Over here, center console, nice and deep.
08:36 But the cool thing is it extends inwards as well.
08:39 So you can actually store a fair bit in there
08:41 to give you an idea of the depth.
08:42 There's a bottle going in.
08:44 Doesn't quite fit.
08:45 Then you have glove box over here.
08:49 Bottle easily fits in there.
08:50 And finally, the sunglasses holder.
08:52 Instead of being up here,
08:53 it's actually located just here above the driver's head.
08:56 Okay, moving on to comfort.
08:57 You have single zone automatic climate control.
09:00 You have seat heating for the driver and front passenger,
09:03 and then electric seat adjustment for the driver.
09:06 Seats themselves are actually quite comfortable.
09:09 They hug you in nicely.
09:10 Steering wheel feels fairly big,
09:12 but it sits nicely in the hand.
09:13 And it has just tilt adjustment, no reach adjustment.
09:17 But in terms of the controls,
09:18 they're all nice and easy to reach.
09:21 Okay, before I hop into the back,
09:22 let's have a look at storage and versatility back here.
09:26 So one pull of this lever lifts the bottom.
09:28 You can also hook the seat up so it stays out of the way.
09:31 A little bit of storage under here
09:33 that'll keep sensitive items away from prying eyes.
09:37 And then if I drop this as well,
09:38 this is where you'll see top tether points, also the jack.
09:43 Let's have a look at how much room there is.
09:46 Okay, look at that.
09:50 That's actually really impressive.
09:52 I've got a seat pretty far back
09:53 and I've got loads of knee room, heaps of toe room.
09:57 Headroom is really good as well.
09:59 There is no center armrest,
10:00 but you can stick the bottle inside the door if you want to.
10:03 Also fixed points on the two outboard seats.
10:06 Got air vents back here, mat pockets as well,
10:08 but I love this.
10:09 You have a 220 volt outlet there for tools, irons,
10:13 but if you want to plug into there,
10:15 and then a USB port as well.
10:17 So it's actually a pretty impressive space back here.
10:20 Okay, we're on the road in the GWM Cannon L.
10:27 I just love the name of it.
10:28 It just sounds like it'll go through fences and stuff.
10:31 Okay, so powering this
10:32 is a two litre four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine.
10:36 Makes 120 kilowatts of power and 400 Newton meters of torque.
10:41 Now I know what you're thinking,
10:42 aren't all the other,
10:44 or most of the other dual cab utes in this segment
10:46 now 500 Newton meters?
10:47 Yes, you'd be correct.
10:48 So this is already starting out with less torque
10:51 than pretty much all of the competitors,
10:53 but it is made into an eight speed ZF transmission.
10:56 So that is a really good gearbox.
10:58 And the other big advantage it has
11:00 is that it's a permanent four wheel drive.
11:01 Most other utes in this segment are two wheel drive,
11:04 but can be switched to four wheel drive
11:06 unless you're on a sealed surface.
11:08 And then in addition to that,
11:09 this also has rear disc brakes.
11:10 But how does it perform?
11:11 Well, while you're moving, it's reasonable.
11:15 You put the foot down, once it actually starts going,
11:18 it picks up and moves really well,
11:19 but it's from a standing start
11:22 that it feels like an absolute slug.
11:25 So if we get on the throttle from a standing start,
11:29 you count the delay here
11:30 from when we actually get anything.
11:32 So foot's flat, nothing, nothing, everything.
11:35 So there's a lot of turbocharger lag
11:37 before it actually kicks on and does anything.
11:39 So yeah, I think that's gonna be one of the big downsides
11:43 of this engine is just how unresponsive it is
11:45 down low on the rev band.
11:46 JWM claims a combined fuel economy of 9.4 litres per 100 Ks.
11:51 Let's see how we're doing.
11:53 12.1, so near enough to where it should be.
11:58 And it's kind of in line with the other competitors
12:00 in this segment in terms of average economy
12:02 over these types of roads.
12:04 What about the drive modes?
12:04 So you have three to choose from.
12:06 You've got Eco, Normal and Sport.
12:09 So I did notice there when I flicked to Sport,
12:11 the throttle became more sensitive.
12:13 It does feel a little bit better.
12:15 It is still a tiny bit laggy,
12:17 but once it's up in the rev band, it's moving.
12:34 Let's talk noise.
12:35 So while the engine is pretty quiet, given that much,
12:39 it's even once you get up it,
12:40 it isn't a great deal of sound that comes into the cabin.
12:44 There is a fair bit of road noise
12:45 and there's a fair bit of wind noise as well.
12:48 It is granted fairly windy today,
12:50 but I can hear a lot coming over those wind mirrors
12:52 and there's a fair bit of road noise
12:53 coming in through the tyres as well.
12:55 Might be able to fix that with a different brand of tyres,
12:57 but yeah, it is a slightly noisy place to be
13:00 on a corrugated country road.
13:02 Righto, what's the ride like?
13:04 You've just bought your new GWM Cannon.
13:06 Is it going to send you mad?
13:08 Look, it's good.
13:09 It's definitely not class leading,
13:11 but it's also definitely not the worst
13:13 we've ever experienced.
13:14 It's quite busy, especially over country roads like this
13:17 where you have corrugations and potholes along the road,
13:20 but for the most part, it's okay.
13:22 I think it had settled with a bit of a load in the rear,
13:25 but it's nowhere near as firm as that original Hilux tune.
13:29 See if I catch some of these potholes on the side.
13:32 Kind of just jiggles around a bit.
13:33 So look, it's okay.
13:34 I think it's one of the compromises you make
13:36 when you don't go with a car
13:39 that's sort of strictly designed and engineered
13:41 in a strategy like the Ranger or the Hilux,
13:43 which has had a lot of tuning work locally,
13:45 but I think for the most part,
13:46 it's not going to drive you mad.
13:48 Okay, let's talk handling.
13:49 It's a dual cab ute, so no one really cares how it handles,
13:51 but let's see what it's like punching into this corner.
13:55 Hey, look, it's not terrible.
13:56 There isn't a great deal of,
13:58 there isn't really any feel through the steering wheel.
14:00 It is an electrically assisted steering rack, which is good,
14:02 but you can't really feel anything about centre.
14:06 And then when you put it into sport mode,
14:08 it just becomes artificially heavy.
14:09 You don't actually get any additional feel,
14:11 but you're obviously not going to be carving up
14:14 mountain roads in this.
14:15 So if you do find yourself through a couple of corners,
14:17 it's not going to terribly disappoint you.
14:20 Turning circle on the other hand, 13.1 metres.
14:24 That is pretty big.
14:25 So that is going to mean
14:27 if you find yourself needing to do a U-turn,
14:30 there's going to be a whole lot of three-point turns happening.
14:34 And what's visibility like?
14:35 So you've got the 360 camera, which helps with parking,
14:38 especially when you consider how long this vehicle is,
14:40 but visibility down the front's fine.
14:42 I can see most parts of the bonnet.
14:44 Got big wing mirrors as well.
14:46 So you can see down the side of the car,
14:47 you've got the blind spot monitor built into there as well.
14:50 Visibility out the rear is pretty good.
14:51 That is a big old window.
14:52 So you feel confident sitting up this high.
14:55 It's, you know, you can really sort of see around the car
14:58 when it comes to parking and manoeuvring in traffic.
15:00 There's no dramas.
15:01 Okay, let's talk off-roading.
15:04 You will have noticed that it's now raining
15:05 and no longer sunny.
15:06 Don't ask, the weather is terrible today.
15:09 Okay, so in terms of off-roading equipment,
15:11 I mentioned earlier that this is a full-time four-wheel drive,
15:14 but in addition to that,
15:15 you have a low range transmission
15:17 and a rear differential lock.
15:19 You also have 27 degrees of approach angle,
15:21 25 degrees of departure angle.
15:24 The approach angle is the angle of the face
15:25 you can approach before you hit anything.
15:27 And the departure angle is the same, but in reverse.
15:29 We also have 192 millimetres of ground clearance.
15:32 So not a massive amount.
15:34 And I suspect we're possibly gonna touch some rocks
15:36 on the way down up here.
15:37 Now, if none of that makes any sense to you,
15:39 you can click up here to watch a video we've shot
15:42 explaining four-wheel drive controls
15:43 and how all-wheel drive systems in four-wheel drives work.
15:46 Okay, so let's get started.
15:48 I'll probably just leave these controls as they are,
15:51 just so we can see how it goes,
15:52 given it is all-wheel drive to begin with.
15:56 Here we go.
15:57 The logs are wet at the moment because we had our downpour.
16:01 Let's see how it goes here.
16:02 See, the problem here is it's so touchy.
16:06 At that 2000 RPM mark, when it comes on boost,
16:10 it just gives you everything instead of being gentle.
16:14 Yeah, that's really not good.
16:17 Okay, so that is gonna be one of the downsides to this.
16:20 If you are doing any off-roading,
16:21 you're probably going to want to stay in low range
16:24 because it just surges too much when it comes on boost.
16:27 Okay, let's head down our rocks.
16:30 I mentioned earlier that ground clearance.
16:32 It means we're probably going to touch a little
16:35 on the way down here.
16:37 Let's see how we go.
16:39 There's also a hill descent control available
16:41 to help control your descent speed.
16:43 There's a little touch there.
16:45 It actually feels pretty comfortable inside the cabin.
16:48 It's not really swaying around too much.
16:50 I have decent control through the steering as well.
16:54 Another touch there.
16:55 Yeah, 192 millimeters.
16:56 It's probably not going to be sufficient
16:58 if you're doing any serious off-roading.
17:01 You'll want to lift this slightly higher.
17:02 Otherwise, you're gonna keep whacking things
17:04 underneath the car.
17:05 There we go.
17:07 Not too bad.
17:08 Okay, so we're gonna do it once more.
17:09 This time around, though, I'm going to go into low range
17:12 and also lock the rear differential,
17:13 just so we can see if that surging issue disappears.
17:16 So I'm gonna put it into neutral.
17:19 We'll slide it around into 4L.
17:22 So it says 4L mode switching.
17:24 There it is there.
17:25 And it disables stability control.
17:27 We'll turn on the rear diff lock as well.
17:29 It comes up with a little icon on the screen there.
17:32 Okay, we're in low range.
17:32 So let's give our hill a try again.
17:36 We'll see if it's any better this time around.
17:39 Yeah, that feels much better.
17:41 So right now it's crawling up here really smoothly.
17:44 Before, when I'd lean on the throttle,
17:46 it would just surge us forward
17:48 and kill those parking sensors.
17:51 That is much, much better.
17:53 Okay, there you go.
17:54 So if you are gonna do any off-roading,
17:55 despite the fact it has a permanent all-wheel drive system,
17:59 I would be using low range.
18:01 Anyway, let's put hill descent control on as well.
18:05 We'll see how that feels behind the wheel.
18:07 Little clunk there.
18:09 Okay, so I'll use hill descent control
18:10 on the lower portion of our track here.
18:13 It actually feels much better here in low range
18:15 coming down the hill as well,
18:17 because the descent speed feels more controlled.
18:20 Okay, so far so good.
18:21 And I'll let go of the brake here now.
18:22 Test hill descent control.
18:25 It's going down pretty slowly, but that's good.
18:28 Okay, there you go.
18:29 So answer to all this is low range, rear diff lock,
18:33 and you should be able to go anywhere,
18:35 especially if you're doing light off-roading like we are.
18:38 So the GWM Cannon.
18:41 Sorry about all the wind.
18:41 The weather is absolutely feral today.
18:44 Tell you what, this has taken me by surprise.
18:46 I wasn't expecting it to be as decent as it is
18:49 for 37 odd thousand dollars.
18:51 This is about half the price of something
18:53 like a Ford Ranger Raptor.
18:55 So that puts it into context
18:57 why this is such a good value proposition,
18:59 especially when you consider all the features
19:00 that it comes standard with.
19:02 But there are a couple of caveats here.
19:03 That engine, it's probably not gonna be amazing for towing,
19:07 despite the fact it can tow 3,000 kilograms.
19:09 Just doesn't have enough punch or urge
19:11 with a trailer on the back.
19:13 It's also quite peaky as well.
19:14 It has nothing, and then it just gives you everything,
19:16 and that affects it slightly off-road.
19:18 But if you put those points to the side
19:20 and you're not really too fussed by brands,
19:22 it doesn't really put a foot wrong.
19:23 So my only recommendation is just wait
19:25 until they do a crash test.
19:27 The last version of this, the Steed,
19:29 was absolutely appalling in terms of the way that it crashed.
19:32 So I wouldn't be buying this
19:33 until there is a published crash test result out there.
19:36 But if it is safe and you want an affordable ute,
19:39 you don't need all of the fancy brand names out there
19:42 like Hilux, Ranger, D-Max, that type of thing,
19:44 I think you should check this thing out.
19:46 So let me know in the comments section below,
19:47 would you ever buy something like this,
19:49 or are you gonna stick with a Hilux no matter what?
19:52 Let me know what you think in the comments section.
19:54 And if you've bought one, how has it been so far?
19:56 I'm really keen to get your feedback.
19:58 Thank you for watching this.
