00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 Look, if you're in the market for an EV luxury barge,
00:04 as I like to call them,
00:05 there are sort of not really all that many options
00:08 here in Australia, but this is about to go on sale.
00:10 It is the Genesis Electrified G80.
00:13 So it's basically an electric version
00:15 of their G80 limousine.
00:18 This competes with things like the Tesla Model S,
00:20 the Mercedes-Benz EQE,
00:22 and to some extent, the Porsche Taycan as well.
00:25 Today, we're gonna do a quick review of this.
00:27 So this is a pre-production car,
00:29 so we're only getting a short time to drive it
00:30 at a private facility,
00:31 but I wanna give you a little bit of an inside
00:33 before it does arrive in Australia later this year.
00:35 This is gonna be priced at around that $150,000 mark
00:38 in one specification.
00:40 If you do wanna skip ahead to other parts
00:42 of this quick review,
00:43 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:45 or if you're on YouTube,
00:45 you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:47 And if you haven't done so already,
00:49 please subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon
00:51 so you can find out whenever we drive
00:53 these pre-production cars.
00:54 Let's talk about design.
00:57 Now, before I do jump into that,
00:59 I just wanna reiterate, this is a pre-production car,
01:01 so some of the bits and pieces you see on here
01:03 won't be on the final car, but it's close enough.
01:06 So you've got eight external colors to pick from,
01:08 one unique color just for the electric vehicle,
01:11 which is this one here,
01:12 and then two matte colors as well.
01:14 Then on the design front,
01:15 it kinda looks just the same as a G80,
01:17 and that's with the exception of the roof
01:19 and this part up the front.
01:21 So up the front here,
01:22 they've kind of closed off the grill
01:23 that would typically cool an internal combustion engine.
01:26 So that's all closed over.
01:27 You still have these little gaps here,
01:28 but they're not really sort of air gaps.
01:31 And then you have a charger hidden
01:32 behind this port as well.
01:33 All of the battery cooling is down here,
01:36 so that sort of feeds in and cools the battery system
01:39 and the motors as required.
01:41 Outside of that, it just looks fairly normal.
01:43 So Genesis badge up the top here.
01:45 Over here, you have a set of matrix LED headlights,
01:48 LED daytime running lights, LED indicators.
01:51 It really is a fully featured setup.
01:53 With the G80, you can see this twin set of lines
01:55 follows all the way down the side of the car.
01:57 It's kind of a theme they have across all of their products.
02:00 Come around to the side.
02:01 Down here, you've got a set of 19 inch alloy wheels.
02:04 Love this design,
02:05 although I think it would be very painful to clean.
02:07 That is a lot of spokes in there.
02:09 This sits on a 45 profile tire,
02:12 so this should actually ride nicely out on the road.
02:15 This car actually uses a camera system
02:16 that interacts with the adaptive dampers
02:18 to smooth out the ride based on what's coming up.
02:21 So I'm keen to see whether that actually works.
02:23 There are those side stripe things that I spoke about.
02:26 They also act as an indicator too.
02:28 I think this is a really elegant design.
02:30 This car just stands out so much out on the road.
02:32 I think it looks sensational.
02:34 Now, up here, you have your wing mirror
02:36 that is body colored,
02:37 bit of piano black down the bottom
02:39 with a camera built into there,
02:40 chrome garnish here on the side.
02:42 Now, have a look up the top here.
02:43 Normally, you would see a panoramic glass roof,
02:46 but these are actually solar panels.
02:47 So one there and one there.
02:49 They take up that entire roof space.
02:51 Now, don't go thinking that this will give you enough
02:53 charge to fill the battery in the car.
02:55 This will only give you around 800 watt hours per day.
02:57 So barely anything,
02:59 but it is enough if you run auxiliary cooling systems
03:02 or just need to use any of the car's functions
03:05 'cause you would be chewing through the car's actual battery
03:07 if you didn't use these.
03:08 So clever use of roof space.
03:10 The only thing that concerns me about these is hail damage.
03:13 This looks like it would be very expensive to replace.
03:16 Come around to the back of the car.
03:17 How is this rear end?
03:18 I think it looks sensational.
03:20 So more of that twin stripe design there
03:22 with a full LED set of taillights.
03:25 Reflectors down at the bottom.
03:26 And because of course this is a full EV, no exhaust pipes,
03:29 but they have integrated that lower bar there quite nicely.
03:32 So it looks like it suits the car.
03:34 It doesn't look like it's just been a retrofit
03:36 of the internal combustion model.
03:37 A little bit of chrome along the top there,
03:39 Genesis and G80.
03:40 You'll notice there are no EV badges on this.
03:43 So if you are driving this,
03:44 no one's really gonna know that it's an EV,
03:46 which I guess is a good thing.
03:47 Let me know what you think in the comment section below.
03:48 If you bought an EV,
03:49 do you want everyone to know that it's an EV
03:51 or do you just wanna get along
03:52 and enjoy your EV motoring all on your own?
03:55 And let me know what you think about the design as well.
03:57 Do you like this as much as I do?
03:58 Let me know in the comment section below.
04:00 So we're inside the Electrify G80.
04:02 We'll start with the key.
04:03 You've got lock, unlock, boot.
04:06 You've got the remote function for moving,
04:09 the remote start function on the back there.
04:11 You've got Genesis.
04:12 Once you're inside,
04:13 you have a push button start just here.
04:15 Now I've gotta say,
04:16 this is one of the best looking luxury car interiors
04:19 I've seen.
04:19 If you move on to town on 10 million screens here,
04:22 everything is functional
04:23 and just the materials and the fit and finish is excellent.
04:26 So you've got this soft touch stuff
04:27 along the dashboard there,
04:28 exposed stitching here.
04:30 And I love this sort of quasi wood grain material
04:32 they've used throughout the cabin.
04:34 This all just screams luxury to me.
04:36 I'm really, really impressed with it.
04:38 In terms of your touch points and build quality and stuff,
04:40 I won't talk about that today
04:41 'cause this is a pre-production car.
04:44 Let's move on to infotainment.
04:45 Now this is another pretty impressive setup in this space
04:49 simply because they haven't had to go down the path
04:51 of these ginormous screens to achieve
04:54 what you need to achieve.
04:54 So this is a 14.5 inch display.
04:57 It's ultra wide screen,
04:59 high resolution.
05:00 And you can see here
05:00 that in addition to inbuilt satellite navigation,
05:03 they have touchscreen available.
05:04 And then you can also use this controller down here
05:07 to manage everything.
05:08 I've mentioned previously in Genesis reviews
05:10 that I sometimes get these two confused while I'm driving.
05:14 I'm sure you get used to that if you own the car,
05:15 but just something worth keeping in mind.
05:18 The only real difference is the EV menu.
05:20 So in the EV menu, you can see how much range you have,
05:22 how much battery is available
05:23 and where your nearest charges are.
05:25 Sound system.
05:26 This uses a 21 speaker Lexicon branded sound system.
05:30 It's a great sound system.
05:31 AM/FM DAB+ digital radio.
05:34 On smartphone mirroring,
05:35 you have both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
05:37 They are both wired systems.
05:39 No wireless available here, unfortunately.
05:41 But outside of that, this infotainment system
05:43 is virtually the same as what you find in the standard G80.
05:47 Head of the driver though,
05:48 you have the luxury level display, which includes 3D.
05:52 I'm not a huge fan of this because to me,
05:53 when I look at it, it looks a little bit blurry
05:55 and I prefer when I'm driving a Genesis
05:57 to just switch all that stuff off
05:58 and have a standard display.
06:00 But horses for courses, I guess.
06:02 And I'll run you through how this is different
06:03 to a standard car when we go for a drive.
06:06 Let's talk about safety tech.
06:07 So you have autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian
06:10 and cyclist detection.
06:11 It's got a junction assistant, evasive steering assistant.
06:15 You have a lane departure warning
06:16 and a lane keeping assistant
06:17 plus a semi-autonomous steering function.
06:19 You do have blind spot monitoring
06:21 built into the wing mirrors,
06:22 but while you're driving and you use your indicator,
06:24 the camera actually comes up on the side here as well.
06:26 And I'll demo that when we do go for a drive.
06:28 On the parking front, you have rear cross traffic alert,
06:30 front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera.
06:33 Show you what that looks like.
06:35 There it is.
06:36 So the quality of that is not too bad.
06:38 There's a bit of sun on that at the moment,
06:39 but if I jump to one of these other views,
06:42 it kind of just gives you an idea of what it looks like.
06:43 Yeah, look, the quality is okay.
06:45 Could be tiny bit better, I reckon,
06:46 but you do have this 3D function
06:49 to keep you busy as well if you want.
06:51 Moving on to practicality,
06:52 and we'll start off with your charging.
06:54 Where are you gonna charge your phone?
06:56 So behind this door here,
06:57 you've got two USB-A chargers
06:58 and a Qi wireless phone charger.
07:01 You have a 12-volt charger here in the center console.
07:05 What about the rest of your storage?
07:06 Well, you can pop your drinks in here.
07:07 There's teeth in there to hold them in place.
07:09 Adequate storage inside the door bins as well.
07:12 This center console, it's pretty generous too.
07:14 You can kind of creep under there a little bit.
07:16 You've got a glove box here as well
07:18 that is plenty spacious.
07:21 And finally, a sunglasses holder at the top.
07:23 And then for comfort,
07:24 you have dual-zone automatic climate control,
07:27 heating and cooling here for the front row,
07:29 heated steering wheel.
07:30 I like these seats because not only do they have
07:33 a multitude of electric adjustment,
07:35 they also have air pockets inside them
07:38 that allow you to run a massage function.
07:39 So while you are going on a long-distance quiet drive,
07:42 you can have the air pockets basically massaging your body
07:45 while you move along.
07:46 The seats themselves are pretty cool.
07:47 So Nappa leather,
07:48 you've got perforations for that cooling setup.
07:51 They hug you in nicely
07:52 with these adjustable electric side bolsters,
07:54 and they're just very comfortable for a long-distance drive.
07:57 And then on the steering front,
07:59 you have electric steering adjustment
08:00 that gives you tilt and reach ability.
08:03 And on our reach test,
08:04 all of this stuff is easy to reach while you're driving,
08:06 but you really have to stretch up here
08:07 if you wanna use touchscreen functions
08:09 on your infotainment system.
08:11 So we're in the second row, soft closed doors.
08:14 What's our room like?
08:15 So knee room is excellent.
08:17 I've got this seat pretty far back.
08:18 Toe room is terrible though.
08:20 Often with these EVs,
08:23 just because of the batteries in the floor,
08:26 they kind of rob you of space.
08:27 And you can see here, my knees are sitting really high up.
08:30 Headroom is okay as well.
08:32 I would have liked maybe just a little bit more there,
08:34 but outside of that,
08:35 it does feel like a spacious place to be seated.
08:37 This is where you'll find
08:38 your additional air conditioning zone.
08:40 You've got air vents there,
08:41 mat pockets over here,
08:43 entertainment screens for your second row.
08:45 These are touchscreens, so they work really well.
08:47 It's kind of a mimic of what you see on the screen there
08:50 ahead of the driver.
08:51 You can adjust your ambient lighting
08:53 and have a look at the camera view and all that sort of stuff.
08:55 So that's pretty cool.
08:56 Center armrests, have a look at this.
08:58 You've got even more controls.
09:00 So you can then control your screens using this.
09:02 If you want, you can lower the shade at the back there
09:05 using this seat heating for your two outboard seats.
09:07 I love that little setup.
09:08 In here, you've got a storage bin with a USB outlet
09:12 and then also two headphone jacks.
09:15 ISOFIX points for your two outboard seats,
09:18 plus three top tether points.
09:19 There is a seat here,
09:20 but probably wouldn't want to be the one
09:22 sitting in the center section there.
09:24 Over on the passenger side,
09:25 you can move that seat forwards and backwards from the rear.
09:28 Then you've also got some additional privacy here,
09:30 should it be required.
09:31 I'd love it if this would be electric,
09:32 just like the back one as well.
09:34 And finally, our window test.
09:36 Does it go all the way down?
09:38 Almost.
09:39 I do love that though.
09:40 Look at it, how it slows down as it tucks back in.
09:42 Very luxury.
09:43 Let's talk cargo space.
09:45 I've got some bad news, and that is,
09:48 you're not gonna have as much boot room as you do
09:50 in the internal combustion version.
09:52 So there's under 400 litres available
09:54 and it kind of has this awkward hump over here
09:56 where there's components for the electric system.
09:59 So yeah, a little bit disappointed with that,
10:01 but for the most part, it's not too bad.
10:03 You've got storage off to the sides.
10:04 Beneath the cargo floor, you have storage for the cable,
10:07 the V2L plug and all that sort of thing.
10:09 But yeah, I wish I could make that a flight floor.
10:12 In terms of what it looks like with our bags in,
10:14 here is our Pelican going in, flying into that space.
10:18 You can see that sort of fits in okay.
10:20 That's about the size of a carry-on suitcase for the plane.
10:23 And I think you'd be able to fit some golf clubs
10:25 in sideways 'cause it is a pretty big boot aperture,
10:27 but just not quite the depth that you need.
10:29 And in addition to that, you can't fold the second row
10:32 to give you more room either.
10:33 So it is a little bit of a compromised space.
10:35 Before we go for a spin,
10:36 let's talk about charging.
10:37 So your charging infrastructure is located
10:40 behind this little doodad here.
10:41 I have mentioned previously that I love the fact
10:43 that this is at the front of the car and not at the side.
10:47 I prefer it either at the front or the back
10:49 instead of just being at the side,
10:50 'cause then you have to drape your charging cables
10:53 over the car, you damage your new paintwork,
10:55 all that sort of stuff.
10:56 Now you have both AC and DC charging here.
10:59 On the AC front, you can charge up to three phase 11 kilowatts
11:02 which is pretty impressive.
11:03 And then on the DC front,
11:05 this is one of the segment leading charging options
11:07 'cause it'll do 800 volts and up to 350 kilowatts.
11:11 And we have seen previously with this Hyundai technology,
11:13 they can charge up to around that 250 kilowatt mark
11:16 pretty comfortably.
11:17 Over here, you have a battery charge indicator.
11:20 And in addition to that,
11:20 this also has vehicle to load ability.
11:22 So using this plug just here,
11:24 you can pump out 3.6 kilowatts out of this plug.
11:27 So you're basically using your vehicle's electricity
11:30 to power something else,
11:31 whether you be out camping or perhaps you're at a conference
11:34 and you need to power the PowerPoint presentation
11:36 or something.
11:37 So yeah, on the charging front,
11:38 this is a pretty decent setup.
11:40 So we've just hit the road in the electrified G80.
11:46 Gee, this is nice.
11:48 It actually feels fantastic
11:50 just sort of cruising along here in absolute silence.
11:53 I'm actually a fan of the G80 in general,
11:55 but it's just a weird feeling being in here
11:58 when it is electrified.
11:59 So this uses a twin motor setup.
12:01 They've taken out all of the internal combustion components
12:04 and instead replaced them with an electric motor
12:06 on the front axle and an electric motor on the rear axle.
12:09 They produce a combined 272 kilowatts of power
12:12 and they're both 136 kilowatts a piece
12:15 on the front and rear axle.
12:16 And that provides you with 700 Newton meters of torque.
12:20 So it is a fairly hefty amount of torque to play with.
12:23 Now, I know the question you're asking,
12:25 will it do all the electric fun stuff?
12:27 Let's pin it back.
12:29 Yeah, it does.
12:30 It's not sort of face melting acceleration,
12:32 but it is a really nice progressive push in the back.
12:35 I think what they've tried to do with this
12:37 is given it a luxury feel in all elements,
12:40 including the way that it accelerates.
12:42 So instead of just, you know, belting you in the back
12:44 like a rugby runner coming up and hitting you,
12:47 that's what they do on the rugby field,
12:49 this sort of just gently pushes you.
12:51 It's like a chess player coming up
12:52 and picking a fight with you.
12:54 It's just a much more steady variation of that.
12:56 And I think it works really well in this chassis
12:58 because it's not making itself out to be a sports car.
13:01 This is very much being pinned as a luxury silent cruiser.
13:06 Now, big battery, that means big range.
13:08 Genesis is quoting around 500 kilometers.
13:11 The exact number is still yet to be confirmed
13:13 for the Australian market,
13:14 but that kind of figure is pretty healthy
13:16 and it's what you expect for a vehicle this size.
13:19 And then when you look at the charging capacity
13:21 and how quickly you can fill that battery,
13:23 it's actually a really good sort of mixture of range
13:26 and also charging ability.
13:27 So they've ticked all the right boxes there
13:29 in terms of this being a touring EV.
13:31 I will also call out as well, just on efficiency,
13:34 not really talking about it here
13:35 just 'cause this car has only been driven at the track.
13:37 So the number is not really going to be all that realistic.
13:40 Let's talk about regen mode.
13:42 So using your paddle shifters,
13:43 you can whip through a number of regen modes
13:45 all the way from off, which is just coasting,
13:48 level one, two, three, and then I-Pedal.
13:52 Now I-Pedal is kind of like a Tesla or a Nissan
13:55 in terms of the way that it comes to a complete stop.
13:57 It's one pedal driving.
13:59 This does it a little differently though.
14:00 In the Tesla, it actuates the brake pedal.
14:02 So when you do come to a stop, it holds the car entirely.
14:05 Here in the Genesis though, it will come to a stop,
14:07 but you can feel it sort of moving back and forward
14:10 a little bit as it rocks its way to a silent finish.
14:14 So it's a little bit different
14:15 and not sure I'm a massive fan of the way that feels.
14:18 I prefer them to just actuate the brake
14:20 and come to a complete stop,
14:22 but I guess this is a mixture of both worlds.
14:25 (car engine revving)
14:26 Now ahead of the driver,
14:27 it's gonna look a little different to a regular G80,
14:30 and that's because you have all of your EV components.
14:33 On the right-hand side, when I roll out of the throttle,
14:35 you can see we go deep into that charge zone.
14:38 And then when I apply throttle,
14:39 it then goes into the power zone.
14:41 So that is very much focused on the way
14:43 that you are delivering torque to the wheels.
14:45 Then on the left-hand side, we have our battery capacity,
14:48 and that is simply low to high.
14:50 Gives you an indication of how much battery you have left.
14:52 You also have battery range as well in addition to that.
14:55 Now in terms of your drive modes,
14:56 you've got a little button here.
14:57 You can switch between comfort, sport, and eco.
15:00 They all adjust the way that the car rides out on the road,
15:02 the way the steering feels.
15:04 And also in eco mode,
15:05 it'll actually dull the air conditioning a little bit
15:07 to preserve your battery while you're driving along.
15:10 Now sport mode, let's see what this feels like.
15:13 All right, that is ready for some action.
15:16 It pins you right back in the seat.
15:18 Actually sits really nice and flat
15:20 when you're stuck into the throttle there.
15:23 Far out it is, absolutely moving.
15:25 Wow, you can just hear the tyres squealing there
15:30 a little bit.
15:31 Pin that out of the corner.
15:36 Yeah, damn, that is good.
15:37 I wasn't expecting a car this size
15:39 to hoof along the way that it is.
15:42 That is impressive.
15:43 So I did notice a couple of times
15:45 when you come flying out of a corner
15:47 and get onto the throttle,
15:48 it's a little reluctant to give you full throttle.
15:51 I can see the traction control light flashing.
15:53 I think if you were to switch that off,
15:54 it would probably sort of aid in that,
15:58 but far out.
15:59 This is absolutely moving.
16:02 Wow, that is impressive.
16:03 I was not expecting that from a big sort of EV like this.
16:07 How does it compare to something like a fast Tesla?
16:11 Look, the Tesla's different.
16:12 The Tesla gives you that immediate punch in the back.
16:14 It genuinely feels like it has
16:16 almost unlimited amounts of power.
16:18 This on the other hand is, I think,
16:20 just a little bit more engaging.
16:21 You feel like you can play with it a little bit.
16:23 A Tesla is very much knife's edge stuff.
16:26 This is on that sort of playful level.
16:29 I think with the Tesla,
16:30 they do everything they can
16:31 to make sure it sticks to the road,
16:32 whereas this, they give you just that little bit of fun
16:34 around the edges,
16:35 and I think that that's a far better tune
16:37 and makes you more enjoyed as a driver
16:39 to give it a crack in.
16:40 Now, we don't have an official zero to 100 time
16:44 from Genesis for the electrified G80,
16:46 but this is how it went up against our stopwatch.
16:48 And in terms of the ride,
17:02 this is exactly what a luxury cruiser needs to feel like,
17:05 despite the fact that it's sitting on pretty big,
17:07 low profile wheels.
17:09 This is a camera that sits up here
17:11 to look at the road ahead,
17:12 and then it changes the suspension damping as it goes.
17:15 So it is a very advanced adaptive damping setup,
17:18 and that's pretty much what you want from this.
17:20 It kind of feels very much like an S-Class
17:22 more than it does a Tesla Model S, for example.
17:26 And that follows through to the silence as well.
17:28 Genesis cars are generally pretty well padded
17:30 and very silent inside the cabin.
17:32 This, on the other hand,
17:33 really takes that to another level,
17:35 and it ensures that you don't hear a thing
17:37 while you're driving.
17:38 You can just cruise along nice and gently,
17:40 and you really don't pick up any noise on the road.
17:43 It is just a great place to be seated,
17:45 especially for a long distance drive.
17:47 What about your visibility?
17:48 Now, this is a big vehicle.
17:50 I'm not gonna lie about that.
17:51 So you can see clearly down the front there.
17:53 That's not a problem.
17:54 Visibility out the wing mirrors is good.
17:56 It's quite a decent size wing mirror.
17:57 You have blind spot monitoring there,
17:59 but also when you hit the indicator,
18:01 this turns into a camera too.
18:02 Visibility out the rear is great as well.
18:04 It's a big envelope,
18:05 so it means you get excellent visibility
18:07 regardless of what you're doing.
18:08 At low speeds as well,
18:09 you have that camera front rear parking sensor.
18:11 So it is pretty easy to place this when you do need to.
18:14 (upbeat music)
18:17 So the Electrified G80,
18:21 I'll tell you what, I was pretty surprised by this.
18:22 I wasn't expecting it to be as fun as it is to drive,
18:25 but also if those range figures end up being sort of accurate
18:28 when it is launched,
18:29 this will be like a really good grand tourer.
18:32 And at 150 grand,
18:33 it's actually really good value for money
18:34 when you have a look at everything else in this segment.
18:37 On the performance front, it's more than adequate.
18:39 It's sort of really smile inducing stuff
18:42 and it handles nicely for a big sedan as well
18:44 with all the luxury features you'd expect.
18:46 So let's see how it goes.
18:47 I'm quietly hopeful that this will do well in Australia.
18:50 Now, it is going to be launched in Australia
18:52 later this year.
18:53 We will hopefully then be able to drive it properly
18:55 on one of our circuits as well to see what it's really like.
18:58 But in the meantime,
18:59 let me know in the comments section below,
19:01 what do you think of the Electrified G80?
19:03 Do you think that Genesis has done a good job with this?
19:05 Is there anything you'd change?
19:07 Would you get solar panels on your roof
19:08 like this has?
19:09 Let me know in the comments section.
