Will Patriots EMBRACE Tank in Germany? | Patriots First and Goal

  • last year
We're here. The bottom. The New England Patriots lost AT HOME to a team that threw in the towel and traded away two of its best players ahead of the trade deadline. Can it get any worse than this? Can the Patriots FINALLY embrace the tank? Is there any value to beating the Colts in Germany? Alec and Rich cover it all.

00:00 All right, hello everybody and welcome to Patriots First and Goal.
00:03 I am Alex Shane, breaking down, unfortunately, yet another Patriots game with my good buddy
00:08 Rich Hill.
00:09 Rich, I hope you're doing better than the Patriots are.
00:12 On the plus side of this, I think anybody out there in Patriots Nation who's maybe hanging
00:17 on to just some tiny sliver of hope that New England could turn their season around, that
00:23 maybe they're going to run some winnable games, get the bye, come back, make some noise, those
00:29 are, that last sliver has been pulled out with tweezers and flicked into the garbage
00:33 can because they lost at home to freaking Sam Howell and Washington.
00:38 They struggled again and it's, if it wasn't over, it's like super duper ultra deluxe over
00:45 now.
00:46 Yeah, totally.
00:47 I mean, like we are at the point where these, this is the easy stretch for the Patriots
00:52 this year, right?
00:53 Like this commanders Colts by week giants, maybe even chargers and then Steelers.
00:58 Like that should have been at least a five game win streak.
01:02 And then you come after the chiefs of the Broncos game.
01:04 Like this should have been the Patriots run where they assert themselves and cement a
01:08 wild card spot.
01:10 But when they put up three points against the Cowboys, when they got shut out against
01:14 the saints, that was it.
01:16 That was it.
01:17 They had a dead cat bounce against the bills, but the fact that they've put up 17 points
01:22 in three out of the past four games.
01:24 And I'm considering that being like the offense is improving, huh?
01:30 Like they're doing some, they might have something going on.
01:34 It's such a depressing way to think about where this team is versus what our expectations
01:40 were to start the year.
01:42 And the only way they score those points is off of turnovers or short fields or busted
01:47 place.
01:48 That's pretty much how they can rely on points.
01:49 They get a short field on a turnover and they hit somebody in the end zone or the hell like
01:54 Armand Ray Stevenson breaks one for 64 yards because somebody missed the coverage tackle
01:59 and they get shut out in the second half and they lose the game on a turnover and it's
02:03 washer and repeat the plus side.
02:04 Rich, I think I can, I can't do it personally.
02:07 I cannot embrace tanking.
02:09 I just don't think it's in me to root for the tank.
02:11 I get it.
02:12 You are, I don't judge.
02:13 There's nothing wrong with it.
02:14 I'm just going to be, I'm kind of going down with this ship, but I have flipped the switch
02:19 and then I can now kind of appreciate the complete comedy of errors that is in the Patriots
02:24 in 2023.
02:25 So if I thought for our first down rather than break the game down, cause there's nothing
02:29 to break down.
02:30 They scored some points.
02:32 Sam Howell ran for 24 yards on third and 23.
02:35 I don't want to relive all this stuff.
02:36 I'm going to go through a couple of moments that I kind of found laugh out loud, funny,
02:40 and maybe you can give me your reaction and rank them as to how they relate to your experience
02:44 in this season so far.
02:46 Let's do it.
02:47 All right.
02:48 So you have six targets for Jalen Rager, including two deep shots for a guy who's a practice
02:53 squad call up and has never once in his life in a deep threat.
02:56 How do you feel about that one?
02:58 Love it.
02:59 Love it.
03:00 I mean, he was doing his very best Devontae Parker impression and he just nailed the role.
03:04 If you look at this whole year, there's no better tribute to Devontae Parker than one
03:08 catch for 11 yards on six targets, other than maybe Tyquan Thornton's one catch for seven
03:13 yards on four targets.
03:14 The fact that those are your two X receivers when you have Keisha and Boutte, who was,
03:18 you know, over four on his very first game and hasn't seen daylight since then.
03:22 The fact that those are the players that the Patriots are trotting out as their X receivers
03:27 while Parker is dealing with injury.
03:30 Chef's kiss.
03:31 They are all playing the exact same role.
03:33 Identically.
03:34 All right.
03:35 So you're a fan of that one.
03:36 How about zero targets for a guy, Mike Gusecki, only two attempts thrown his way for the big
03:41 tight end wide receiver hybrid opposition to get the reds or the commander?
03:45 Excuse me.
03:46 Yeah, no, I raised that.
03:48 Johnnie Smith going for 100 yards for the Falcons this week.
03:52 There's no greater indictment of the Patriots coaching staff than Gusecki being an absolute
03:57 ghost for the Patriots.
03:59 Just following in the footsteps of Johnny Smith being an absolute ghost and being unplayable
04:03 for the Patriots air quotes, unplayable.
04:05 The coaches couldn't figure out how to use him.
04:07 And then you see him go to the Atlanta Falcons and he has 100 yard day in a.
04:11 Score like get out of here.
04:14 So no, perfect.
04:16 Absolutely perfect.
04:17 Like a sec.
04:18 He got nothing.
04:19 You're loving this so far.
04:20 All right.
04:21 How about this one?
04:22 A remandering Stevenson streaking rot wide open on a wheel route.
04:24 Mac Jones feels no pressure, throws off his back foot, complete floater, gets broken up
04:28 to kill a drive.
04:29 How do you feel about that one?
04:30 I feel pretty good about that one.
04:32 I feel pretty good.
04:33 I mean, I think all of I mean, we talked about this earlier in the year.
04:38 Mac Jones is broken.
04:39 He has no technique.
04:41 He is not recovering from all of these mishaps.
04:46 And we've seen enough jets, quarterbacks over the years to know what a quarterback who can't
04:50 come back looks like.
04:52 We're already starting to see some of the scuttle in the new England media around just
04:56 like the coaches just being like, this is the disastrous quarter.
04:59 This is not who we were looking for.
05:01 We're expecting to have a quarterback who could make consistent smart plays.
05:06 We're not looking for someone who has a cannon.
05:08 We're not looking for someone who can win with their athleticism.
05:11 We're looking for someone who can consistently make the right play and we can win within
05:15 that system.
05:16 And Mac Jones is good for about five miscues that end the game.
05:22 Sometimes other teams capitalize on them.
05:24 Sometimes they don't.
05:25 But his ability to throw off of his back foot when he has no need to happens multiple times
05:32 a day.
05:34 So why shouldn't it happen this week?
05:36 Love it, Rich.
05:37 It's on fire right now.
05:38 How about a sweet Demario Douglas punt return called back due to offsides in the special
05:42 teams giving Washington a whole new set of downs?
05:45 Yeah.
05:46 Weren't there like three special team penalties in a row?
05:48 There were.
05:49 It ended with Brendan Schooler screaming at the rest of the sideline.
05:52 A nice disciplined football we saw there.
05:54 Unreal.
05:55 Yeah.
05:56 Now, I mean, the fact that the special teams unit has been so bad, I mean, what, worst
06:00 of the Belichick era last year, Cam Accord can't make it through this season.
06:05 Like Joe Judge will be running that unit next year without any question.
06:11 It's just shocking.
06:12 It is shocking to me.
06:14 And this is not even going into the funny parts of it.
06:16 It is shocking to me that the Patriots spent 20 years building an entire reputation under
06:21 Bill Belichick of playing disciplined football, of playing smart football, of not beating
06:26 yourselves with those pre-snap penalties, of not beating yourself with turnovers.
06:31 And they are checking every single box in the opposite direction for both this year
06:36 and the past couple of years.
06:37 And it's just shocking that it's not like Belichick has changed his focus as to what
06:42 is important to win football.
06:44 You know, it's the hidden yards.
06:45 You're supposed to flip fields during special teams and put your offense in a little bit
06:48 of a better position or your defense in a more favorable position.
06:51 And to give up free yards is just egregious and goes against everything that Bill Belichick
06:58 has ever stood for as a head coach.
07:00 And so it's not that he's not teaching those things.
07:03 It's that the players likely aren't receiving it and they're just not playing to that caliber.
07:08 And part of that's on the front office for assembling this team, for not being able to
07:13 produce to the caliber that is necessary.
07:17 But also it's on the players themselves too, because all of those tenets of what is winning
07:22 football haven't changed.
07:24 Speaking of on the players, how about the end of the game?
07:26 A cross around to Juju Smith-Schuster, right off the hands, picked off, game over.
07:31 How do you feel about that one?
07:32 I don't know.
07:33 Could you have scripted that any more perfectly?
07:35 Like this is an offensive unit that is just no legs whatsoever.
07:41 That Juju Smith-Schuster had his breakout day for six catches and 51 yards.
07:46 That's including that interception at the end.
07:49 It's just so sad.
07:54 There's no better way to end a loss against the commanders than that play.
07:58 That just going to Smith-Schuster, ended up being intercepted.
08:01 When you're obviously not in field goal range yet, but you're close.
08:06 It's a coin flip at this point, be a 58 yarder.
08:08 So obviously not an easy one, but you get less than 10 yards, you're in potential field
08:14 goal range.
08:15 You are in game time field position and that was on second and eight.
08:19 There's no better note to end this game than losing to one of the worst teams in the league
08:25 who had given up.
08:27 Remember this, the commanders traded away their top two defensive players before the
08:30 trade deadline and they gave up and the Patriots couldn't beat them while at home.
08:37 So absolutely they deserve to lose in that fashion.
08:40 They couldn't beat them while at home without those two pass rushers with one of the worst
08:45 calls I'd ever seen on that against Matt or for Mac Jones, that roughing the pass.
08:51 Unbelievable that happened.
08:52 It kept the drive going.
08:53 The only real points they scored came on our Andre Stevenson run, which is a good run.
08:57 No credit credit credits due.
08:59 And then a great fumble that led to a beautiful complimentary football touchdown to Hunter
09:02 Henry.
09:03 But those are really the only two plays or drives of note in the entire game.
09:08 And I think we talked about it last week, which this is a classic scenario.
09:10 If this was say Patriots Colts circa 2007, 2014, they're down 14 to 20 to 20 to 14 or
09:19 whatever the score is.
09:20 The defense forces a punt.
09:22 You just know, you know, Tom Brady will get points on the board.
09:27 He will do what he has to do.
09:28 He'll generate a drive and they're going to win the game.
09:30 You were as confident as you could be in an unpredictable game that was going to happen
09:34 for a long time.
09:35 Now when Washington punted again, my question, my first thing was like, okay, so how are
09:40 they going to lose this game?
09:41 Is it going to be a turnover?
09:43 Is it going to be a turnover on downs because he got sacked on second and 15 and then sacked
09:47 again on third and 20?
09:49 Or is it going to be like a ridiculous penalty that calls back a major play like you just
09:53 the real mystery now is not if they're going to lose.
09:57 It's what embarrassing way they're going to lose.
09:59 And this week, I guess door number three, it was an interception to end the game.
10:04 And here we find ourselves two and seven hands down the worst team in the AFC.
10:09 Are they Rich Hill, the worst team in the NFL or the teams in the NFC, even though they
10:13 have fifth draft, fifth overall draft pick, there are guys ahead of them in the draft
10:17 order.
10:18 Are they the worst team in the league?
10:19 In your opinion?
10:22 I think there's two different ways to analyze it.
10:25 One are they the least talented team in the league right now to that?
10:31 I would say no, maybe I would, I wouldn't say a confident.
10:37 Yes.
10:38 That's one score early this NFL season with FanDuel America's number one sportsbook.
10:46 Right now, new customers get one hundred and fifty dollars in bonus bets with any winning
10:51 five dollar money bet.

11:08 So visit FanDuel.com/Boston a kick off the NFL season.
11:13 FanDuel official partner of the NFL.
11:18 The other question there that you're asking is how does their future stack up to other
11:25 teams?
11:26 How many other teams would trade position to be where the Patriots are right now?
11:31 At least the Panthers have Bryce Young, you know, or at least they feel like they might
11:36 have a player that can be a part of their future.
11:39 Arizona Cardinals, they've been dealing with Kyler's injury.
11:43 They've been playing well.
11:44 They are in the same seat, roughly, that the Lions were when Dan Campbell took them over
11:49 like a few years ago, where the players are playing hard and you can see it.
11:53 You can see the pieces coming together a little bit.
11:55 So maybe it's not this year, but like it's coming around the corner.
11:59 The two other teams, I'd say probably on par with the Patriots, the Bears and the Giants.
12:05 Those would be the two teams that I'd be like, I don't know necessarily if I would trade
12:09 the, or if they'd be like willing to trade with the Patriots for it, but it's not a cut
12:15 and dry thing.
12:16 It's not something that I feel like they would say like, oh, without a doubt, at least the
12:20 Bears, you know, you look at their roster, DJ Moore, very, very good.
12:25 They have a few other players like up and down the roster that I think have a lot of
12:29 potential.
12:30 I really liked Darnell Wright as attacker.
12:31 They have some pretty good offensive linemen, Cody Whitehair.
12:35 They have some pieces and maybe it's not like the right coaching staff.
12:39 Everfluss is going to be fired by the end of this year, but they also have two picks
12:46 in the top three right now because they own the Panthers pick.
12:51 And so, or sorry, vice versa, the Panthers have two picks in the top three.
12:55 So it's one where it's just like, I don't know necessarily how many teams the Patriots
13:00 would want to trade with, but they're definitely a bottom three franchise right now.
13:05 - Oh, how the mighty have fallen, Rich Hill.
13:07 And again, if they're losing and they're showing promise, that's one thing.
13:11 I think we were all so excited about 2021.
13:13 They lost games.
13:14 We didn't care.
13:15 They were on their trajectory going upward.
13:17 They were kind of stagnant in 2022 and they're just in a free fall in 2023.
13:23 I am optimistic about this off season, both due to the high draft pick they're going to
13:27 get in the cap space that they have, but it's just weird how we're sitting here talking
13:31 about a loss in November and the concern is not, oh man, now they're gonna have to go
13:35 to Indianapolis or Kansas city for the AFC championship game.
13:39 Now it's just like, yeah, they lost in November.
13:41 Let's talk about the draft before Thanksgiving even happens, but that's just the way it is.
13:46 This is another embarrassing game.
13:47 I'm not looking forward to talking about it ever again.
13:50 So unless you want to talk about something else, we can move on to second down.
13:53 - Let's move to second down.
13:55 - Speaking of crap, second down, Rich, second goal around the NFL week 10, somehow every
14:00 good team in the league is on a buy this week, which leaves us with the marquee matchups
14:05 like Browns, Ravens, Titans, Buccaneers, Jets, Raiders, and Broncos, Bills, and primetime.
14:12 Giants Cowboys could be a good game because it's a divisional matchup, but the Giants
14:15 stink and the Cowboys are good.
14:17 All the talented teams are pretty much on a buy this week and it's going to be kicked
14:21 off with something that's going to set international relations back between the US and Germany
14:25 for decades with Colts Patriots at 930.
14:28 No one's going to want to watch that besides Colts and Patriots fan.
14:31 Is there any game on this slate, Rich, including the Pats game you're remotely excited about?
14:36 - Yeah, the Thursday night game.
14:39 One and seven Panthers on the road against the two and seven Bears.
14:42 As we talked about earlier, the Bears own that Panthers pick.
14:46 So no matter what happens, the Bears kind of win in this scenario.
14:52 They're currently holding two of the top three draft picks in the first round, which is absolutely
14:57 absurd.
14:58 They are, you know, I think there's a strong chance that whoever, you know, the Patriots
15:07 draft pick will fall somewhere in line with these two.
15:11 And so I think the Patriots will have a very concerted, like, opinion on this game.
15:19 Like they're going to be paying attention to it because that's where this team is right
15:22 now.
15:23 So I'm curious to see how these teams approach the rest of the year from a, how are they
15:28 leaning into the suck, if that makes sense.
15:32 Like the Patriots made their choice that they weren't going to sell off the prospects that
15:37 they had prior to the trade deadline.
15:40 Washington commanders decided to do that.
15:42 I'm curious to see if the Patriots are going to make the active decision to kind of jockey
15:49 with these, like the Panthers and Bears team to kind of get the top picks overall.
15:59 But I also feel like, you know, Chicago has, you know, nothing to lose from winning this
16:04 one.
16:05 Like that actually helps them a little bit, but Panthers also can go all in.
16:09 So it's one of those games where I feel like when the teams are really, really bad, sometimes
16:14 it could be a fun game to watch.
16:16 And it's Thursday night.
16:17 Who knows about Thursday night?
16:18 That's such a crap shoot, whether the game's going to be good or not.
16:21 It's funny to be interested in games like Falcons Cardinals.
16:24 I'll be paying attention to hopefully the Cardinals win that one.
16:27 Giants Cowboys I care about.
16:29 Hopefully the Giants bought the upset there.
16:31 Even though my wife's a Cowboys fan, I can't say that too loud in this house.
16:35 It's weird to be talking about the Broncos, rooting for the Broncos, not because it's
16:38 an anti-bills thing, but like the Broncos win, help the Patriots draft stock.
16:42 So it's almost like I'm playing like draft pick fantasy for the first time in a long
16:46 time where I'm rooting for other teams to win because it helps and for the Patriots
16:49 to lose because it helps their draft stock out.
16:51 Again, that said, I can't officially root for them to lose.
16:54 But overall, if you're like a casual football fan who likes to watch teams play and you
17:00 decide to take this week off, I don't necessarily blame you too much because not a lot of marquee
17:04 matchups here.
17:05 Yeah, I will say that there's two games that I feel like could be exciting to watch.
17:10 Texan Bengals, CJ Stroud coming off of just an incredible record setting day for the Texans
17:15 last week.
17:16 And he had like 470 passing yards and five touchdowns, no interceptions for the Texans.
17:20 He's looking incredible knockout pick by Nick Casario and the Houston Texans.
17:25 They're on the road against Joe Burrow and the Bengals.
17:28 This is going to have wildcard implications.
17:30 So very interested to see how that works out.
17:33 There's also the five and three 49ers on the road against the six and two Jaguars, which
17:37 y'all, the Jaguars are six and two.
17:40 I was caught by surprise on that one.
17:42 They're on a five game win streak.
17:43 They're not like the class of the AFC, but they're a playoff team.
17:47 They have a bright future there.
17:49 And then the last game, actually, that was also the six and two Lions on the road against
17:52 the four and four Chargers.
17:53 Jared Goff playing like top five quarterback.
17:55 Justin Herbert is a top five quarterback, but he kind of has that Brett Favre gene where
18:00 he's a big boomer bust.
18:01 And so this could either be, you know, like a 40 40 game or the Lions could win this one
18:05 pretty handily.
18:06 Yeah, I'll tell you, you know, I know it's still a little early to talk about playoff
18:10 projections because Patriots are so far out of that.
18:13 It's not even funny, but it's weird that if the season ended today, all four AFC North
18:18 teams would be in the playoffs and the bills are on the outside looking in right now.
18:23 Who'd have thought?
18:24 Very, very strange, very weird season for a lot of reasons.
18:27 They must regret losing to the Patriots.
18:29 Yeah, I guess if nothing else, if the Patriots have that one Patriots game where they somehow
18:35 beat the bills is what keeps them out of the postseason.
18:39 I'm not going to call it a successful season, but it'll sting just a little bit less because
18:43 this is the role that we're now in.
18:44 We play spoiler for the good teams.
18:46 It happened to us for 20 years.
18:47 We're overdue for that.
18:49 But it's kind of crazy to see the Ravens, Steelers, Browns and Bengals.
18:52 This has to be the first time ever all four teams in a kind of division made the playoff
18:56 for it to happen.
18:57 But if you're not really interested in that, I got nothing else for this this week, Rich.
19:03 The not even close to marquee game will start at 930 a.m.
19:08 It is I am sorry, Germany.
19:10 It is Kohl's Patriots.
19:11 We'll get that right after this.
19:15 All right, Rich, international game when this game first hit the schedule back in April
19:20 or so, I was a little pissed off because it meant the Patriots lost the home game.
19:24 They're technically the home team against the Indianapolis Colts coming into Frankfurt.
19:28 They're playing in.
19:29 I don't remember exactly where you're Frankfurt.
19:32 But this year, actually, is kind of a blessing because the Patriots think at home they only
19:36 have one win there is against the bills.
19:38 They're playing the Colts again.
19:39 This is not a game.
19:40 You're setting their alarm to wake up to if you're on the West Coast, you can sleep right
19:43 through it.
19:44 I'm going to be watching some a masochist.
19:46 I'm sure you are as well.
19:48 Well, speaking of masochists, get to the painful part first.
19:52 Let's talk about the Patriots offense against the Colts defense.
19:57 I'm not going to ask you how you score points because they don't score points.
20:00 But I'm going to ask you, how are you going to try and probably fail to score points if
20:05 you're the Patriots going to the Colts defense?
20:06 Yeah.
20:07 I mean, is it that kind of sad thing where it's just like all the standard things are
20:11 true?
20:12 Like, yeah, just protect the football.
20:15 This is a good Colts defense, by the way, as it relates to turnovers.
20:18 They forced a turnover in every single game this year in multiple turnovers and four of
20:23 them.
20:24 So, you know, they are licking their chops playing against this Patriots team.
20:27 They have the reigning defensive player of the week in the FC and Kenny Moore, who, you
20:34 know, former Patriots practice squatter who has found his footing and has made a really
20:37 good career for himself with the Colts.
20:40 They have pretty strong rotational players, really good defensive lineman in DeForest
20:45 Buckner.
20:47 They have, you know, just overall really fast speed on defense.
20:56 But they're also not necessarily great overall, if that makes sense.
21:00 They rank 26 points allowed per drive.
21:04 They are always set up for like some of the worst field position.
21:07 They've, you know, middle of the pack as it relates to running, but ranked 20th against
21:12 the pass.
21:13 So there are ways to have success against them, but it's kind of fluctuating.
21:19 Like they gave up 137 yards to the Panthers last week, but 350 to the Saints the week
21:23 before, 166 to the Browns the week before that.
21:28 This is not necessarily a team where it's really simple on how to play them.
21:34 But if I were to say what their strengths are, I would say it's their speed and I would
21:38 say it's their defensive line.
21:40 And so I would say the Patriots need to have a really strong outing from their offensive
21:44 line.
21:45 They need to find a way for Ramondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott to continue to have, you
21:51 know, they've been building success over the course of this year.
21:54 That's been a positive trend for the Patriots offense.
21:56 What the Patriots really need to do is win with their number two receiver.
22:01 Because Kenny Moore is going to do a great job removing Demario Douglas.
22:05 And maybe the easiest X factor question of the game is Devante Parker.
22:12 If he gets cleared, Juju Smith Schuster, Keishon Butte, Rager, Tyquan Thornton.
22:19 I mean,
22:20 Who is number two receiver for this team?
22:24 Anybody literally anybody.
22:25 They have to put Parker back in there.
22:27 And it's like it's one where they just someone someone has to show up.
22:31 And like I'm not talking about Juju Smith Schuster putting up 51 yards in a fumble or
22:36 like a turnover to interception kind of a thing.
22:39 They need someone to show up or else this is going to be another day where Mac Jones
22:43 throws 400, 200 yards.
22:45 For those of you who are listening to the podcast version of this, not watching the
22:49 video feed, smart move A and B.
22:52 Rich made that entire rant with one hand over his face like a palm.
22:56 What's hell happening?
22:57 I'm hiding my cures.
22:58 Yeah, it was basically I could tell how much that pained you to have to have that little
23:04 discussion with me.
23:05 Yeah, I mean, I guess I guess the X factor is somebody and I think that's a reasonable
23:09 X factor.
23:10 Anybody, anybody?
23:11 Yeah, I mean, again, Demario Douglas, good for him for becoming the number one receiver.
23:15 He's not a number one receiver, nor should he be.
23:17 I think he'd be a great number two in a system with like a decent outside threat and he's
23:23 on the way up.
23:24 But yeah, I mean, he's the guy.
23:26 It's not hard to shut him down right now.
23:28 He's a rookie.
23:29 He's not.
23:30 He's still learning and he's not going to have a productive day.
23:31 I don't know who's going to be the second guy.
23:34 It's not going to be like a second.
23:35 He's I don't know why he can't make it in.
23:37 Don Hunter Henry flashes.
23:39 He might be worth a deep, deep flex and fantasy leaves because he's going to be the main target
23:42 for Mac Jones, I think.
23:44 But my offensive X factor, it's going to be the end zone, just like the actual end zone
23:50 on the field.
23:52 If they're able to get the ball across it a couple of times, I think that'll really
23:57 help them score some points.
23:59 Harness my inner John Madden analyst.
24:01 I just don't know who it's going to be.
24:06 I actually figured this would be the kind of game where it would be so nice to have
24:10 like a Shane Verne or a James White or just like a pure receiving back.
24:15 I think the Mondra experiment is kind of a failure in terms of a do all back that can
24:19 run the ball and catch the ball.
24:22 He's a decent pass catcher, not a great one.
24:24 But if they had like a pure third down back, they can motion about against a linebacker
24:28 and feast over the middle.
24:29 That'd be great.
24:30 But they don't have that.
24:32 So I don't know what they're going to do.
24:35 Maybe they'll do a lot of short intermediate throws and high Montgomery game.
24:39 I mean, I've ship has sailed.
24:41 Rich Hill was very high on time on coming for a long time, but there's no way I can
24:46 watch this season and still be like a time Montgomery guy.
24:49 That just wouldn't make any sense.
24:51 So I really I mean, one thing I'm genuinely curious to see what their offensive game plan
24:56 is.
24:57 I feel like it definitely is more of a passing game than a running game in terms of mismatches,
25:01 but their strength is the running game.
25:03 Maybe Zeke goes off.
25:04 Maybe Zeke has like a outlet back, has like takes a screen to the house, something like
25:09 that.
25:10 Maybe they use a lot of motion to to get the Colts off and you like to play action more
25:13 middle of the field.
25:14 I don't know.
25:15 Maybe Juju, you know, he to his credit, he took a lot of accountability this week about
25:19 his job that I have to make those matches.
25:21 That's on me.
25:22 Maybe he's trying to prove himself, but I just don't know exactly what's going to happen
25:28 on Sunday morning.
25:29 Yeah, I mean, I so additional context, Gus Bradley is the defensive coordinator for the
25:34 Colts.
25:35 People should remember him.
25:37 He was the former Seahawks defensive coordinator, you know, running that cover three style defense
25:42 that Tom Brady had a lot of success with over the years.
25:45 So like it's one that Patriots know how to do it like they know.
25:51 And a lot of it is exactly what you said.
25:54 Whoever the receiving back is a lot of those angle routes coming out of the backfield.
25:58 But what always carried the day, Julian Julian Edelman in the slot, having players that can
26:03 run across the field could be Demario Douglas.
26:06 It could very well be him as the solution, but that's where their strength with Kenny
26:09 Moore as being a really strong slot receiver, a really good defensive back.
26:14 That's where it becomes difficult.
26:17 Patriots need to find a way to get Demario Douglas in isolation because he is their best
26:22 receiver.
26:23 He is their most capable receiver.
26:24 He is the type of receiver that carves up these cover three defenses, but the Patriots
26:30 can't treat him as a sacrificial lamb and just trot him out against Kenny Moore.
26:33 They need to find ways for him to get open.
26:36 What they did against the Bills with a lot of motion is what they have to do here and
26:41 find ways to just get him the ball in space because otherwise they're just, you know,
26:46 Mac Jones isn't a good enough quarterback to dissect defense in the way that we are
26:50 used to watching as Patriots fans.
26:53 Do you think this is the week, Rich Hill, that we see some Keishon Boutte?
26:56 There was a lot of calls for him last week and a lot of anger that he wasn't on the field.
27:00 I personally don't see why everyone's so obsessed with it, but I get it.
27:03 Why not give him a shot?
27:04 See what they got in them.
27:05 Yeah.
27:06 You think he makes the trip?
27:07 I don't know, man.
27:08 It's the one where it's like, I would like to see that, but that's coming up from a place
27:14 of what more are you going to see throwing the ball to Tyquan Thornton and Jalen Rager,
27:19 right?
27:20 Like it's like with the same thing with the Patriots offensive line where it's like, well,
27:23 we don't want to move on Wayne to right tackle.
27:25 We need to have something to do with consistency.
27:27 It's like, well, to what ends?
27:28 They're the worst offensive line in football.
27:30 If you move to the right tackle, what's going to happen there?
27:32 They're going to stay the worst offensive line.
27:34 Sure.
27:35 Maybe it's going to make it a little bit better.
27:36 This is without a doubt, the worst offensive receiving group in the entire NFL as it relates
27:40 to their ability to create separation, as it relates to their ability to produce.
27:45 So like why keep trotting out these players that can't do anything at this point, we're
27:50 playing with lottery tickets.
27:52 Let's see what's there.
27:53 Let's see if Boutte has anything that he can bring to the table because we have a track
27:56 record.
27:57 We have a track record with Rieger just from his previous stops.
28:00 We have a track record with Taekwon Thornton.
28:02 We have a, you know, a track record right now with, you know, a little bit of a higher
28:05 ceiling, but we know what Devante Parker is and it's just, let's just see what else is
28:11 on the roster.
28:12 You know, like Parker can stay active, but there's no value to having Thornton and Rieger
28:16 out there.
28:17 Are you officially out on Taekwon Thornton?
28:19 Are you still kind of clinging to some hope there?
28:21 Zero, zero.
28:22 And like, I'm saying this as someone who like wishes him nothing but the best, but I was
28:26 opposed to that pick from day one.
28:28 I know you were.
28:29 The fun of the question was like, you know, he's thin and his kind of inability to gain
28:36 weight really caused him trouble in the NFL, but like he never even saw the field, which
28:41 is interesting.
28:42 I feel like he never, it's not really his fault, but he's never had any chance to develop
28:44 or grow.
28:45 He just can't see the field.
28:47 Maybe that's because he's so thin and he got hurt a lot.
28:49 I don't know what it was, but yeah, we can just add him to the ever growing pile of the
28:54 second round busts that Bill Belichick has somehow, again, I swear he made a deal with
29:00 somebody, some devil or some Celtic God or something that like he will sacrifice a second
29:05 round player every year in exchange for success for the last 20.
29:09 And now the bill is finally coming.
29:11 It's the fault that Barmore was a good pick that broke the pact.
29:14 That was.
29:15 It's all Barmore's fault, which is good enough transition as any, Rich Hill.
29:19 Fourth and goal, Patriots defense versus Colts offense.
29:23 Christian Barmore is one of the lone bright spots on this season.
29:26 Kyle Duggar is trying to step up again.
29:28 There are some good pieces along this defense.
29:29 I'm definitely at the point.
29:30 I don't know about you, Rich, but like when the defense is on the field, I'm having more
29:34 fun with the game, which is kind of crazy because maybe they get a turnover and they
29:38 kick a field goal.
29:39 That's kind of what I'm hoping happens every time the D takes the field.
29:43 So it was Sam Howell last week who actually looked pretty good.
29:47 I don't want to like say that Sam Howell, some kind of scrub who had a kind of just
29:51 crazy game.
29:52 He's actually a pretty decent quarterback.
29:53 I think it's Gardner.
29:54 Michoud is the quarterback for the Colts with Anthony Richardson out getting surgery.
29:59 The backups are good buddy, Sam Ellinger.
30:01 They took him to the woodshed last time these two teams played.
30:04 I can't imagine he'll see the field.
30:06 Michoud is not a great quarterback.
30:09 He's not terrible.
30:10 He's pretty vanilla.
30:11 He's streaky.
30:12 He's kind of like Fitz magic in that like you'll have like a 400 yard game and then
30:15 a four pick game.
30:16 It's very, very weird like that.
30:18 But if you are Steve Belichick, how are you attacking this Colts offense?
30:21 Yeah, I mean, it's a pretty good offense.
30:24 Honestly, I like them.
30:26 They Zach Moss, very solid running back and I know that Jonathan Taylor is back.
30:31 So they have a really strong one to punch out of the backfield.
30:36 Michael Pittman is a very good top receiver for them.
30:39 I believe he's entering in contract here.
30:41 But Josh Downs, very good young receiver.
30:43 Alec Pierce, big deep threat, another really good young receiver that they have.
30:47 So they have some good pieces out there.
30:50 They have three receivers that can really play Pittman's on the bigger side.
30:53 Downs falls more to that like Emanuel Sanders S type role that are given the Patriots fits
30:58 in the past.
30:59 And then Alec Pierce is just that speedster on the outside.
31:02 I really liked him coming out of the draft.
31:03 He does such a good job generating separation.
31:06 Definitely like a little bit of boom bust.
31:09 But when you have a quarterback like Gardner Minshew, that's what it takes.
31:13 You might get a home run hit out of him.
31:15 And so if I'm the Patriots, I'm a little nervous as in obviously you're going to be nervous.
31:20 You're not in a good position to win this one.
31:22 But it's a thing where I don't think Minshew himself is going to win the game with a Herculean
31:27 effort.
31:29 And it's also not a case where, you know, there's one answer key.
31:34 Defending the run game isn't necessarily the answer because they have three receivers that
31:39 can probably put up, you know, over 80 yards in a given day and a quarterback that's willing
31:44 to risk it.
31:45 And that's pretty dangerous for the Patriots.
31:47 I really like that Fitzpatrick comparison.
31:50 Even if their style of play or their techniques aren't exactly the same, that risk taking
31:55 mentality, perfect.
31:57 Minshew doesn't care.
31:59 And he's going to go out there and take his opportunities perhaps and hopefully maybe
32:03 the Patriots defense will be able to capitalize.
32:06 But if I'm the Patriots, a lot of it also comes down to like who is available.
32:10 JC Jackson, is it making the trip to Germany?
32:13 Jack Jones, you know, he is a question mark just as it relates to what the team trusts
32:18 in him right now.
32:19 He was benched for the first couple of drives last game.
32:21 So you have Jonathan Jones, who's been dealing with a knee injury as your top cornerback.
32:26 And you got Miles Bryant, who's been dealing with a chest injury as your other cornerback.
32:30 And then that's why Sean Wade's playing a lot, which is not great.
32:33 And so if I'm the Patriots, who gets what matchup?
32:37 You're kind of out of luck because you don't really have like if Jack Jones can play, then
32:42 he's going to get Michael Pittman most likely.
32:44 And then you put Miles Bryant on Josh Downs and then you have Jonathan Jones probably
32:48 in isolation on Alec Pierce, just match speed on speed.
32:53 But it's definitely not a situation that I feel like the Patriots have any wiggle room.
32:58 And I think that the Colts office of talent just I mean, just just do the Patriots injury.
33:02 I think the Patriots are kind of looking up at the Colts receivers right now.
33:07 You think it's more like a man game than his own game?
33:09 I mean, with the lack of depth in their cornerback, maybe just try to zone it out and get some
33:13 help if we can.
33:14 Yeah, I mean, like we saw what happened against the Dolphins.
33:16 It felt like every single time they just sat back in their zone to have found someone on
33:21 an in route every single time they just sat in the zone.
33:24 This Patriots defense is not fast enough, not athletic enough, not savvy enough to be
33:29 able to do that successfully.
33:31 And like, I don't think that the Colts offense is the same level as the Dolphins by any means.
33:38 But they have talent, they know what they're doing.
33:41 And so I think man puts the Patriots in a better position to stifle their offense.
33:47 You're going to have some risks if you do that.
33:49 But it puts them in a better position.
33:50 Like, I just feel like you can't play zone too much in this modern NFL because that just
33:56 lets the opposing offense get into a rhythm and they're just going to find the open player
33:59 every single time.
34:01 You see the the passing game seems to be more of a threat to them the running game, which
34:05 I feel like the Patriots match up pretty well against the Colts offensive line.
34:08 Yeah, I mean, like it's a good Colts offensive line to in general, like Quentin Nelson, one
34:14 of the best offensive linemen in the league.
34:16 Ryan Kelly, pretty good offensive center.
34:19 They are okay at tackle Ryman and Freeland are okay.
34:22 And then we'll freeze is like another okay guard.
34:26 The Patriots I do think match up well, it's like going to be a pretty even battle up front.
34:32 I mean, I think, you know, undersung player for the Patriots has been Anfernee Jennings,
34:36 who has really just elevated his play this year.
34:39 I wouldn't be surprised if he got a second contract with the Patriots.
34:42 He's the type of player that you want in that defensive front.
34:45 But I think that like the Patriots big X factor through all of this is probably going to be
34:49 Juwan Bentley.
34:50 Like, I think that he has been the Patriots best defensive player picked up two sacks
34:55 last week.
34:56 He's almost the leading tackler.
34:58 I think that obviously Duggar and Peppers are good as well.
35:01 But Bentley is the heart of this Patriots defense.
35:04 And when you have good runners like Zach Moss and Jonathan Taylor, you're going to have
35:08 to be stout up the middle.
35:09 But when you're playing these three receivers, you're going to be in a lot of nickel.
35:13 And so you need to have your interior like defense, you know, your linebackers make no
35:18 mistakes.
35:19 Like they have to be able to stop the run because they're going to dedicate their resources
35:23 to stopping the pass.
35:25 And so, you know, I think Bentley has the ability to do it.
35:29 He is one of the better defenders that the Patriots have.
35:33 So I'm, you know, if he has a really strong day, if he can be very disruptive, force a
35:37 fumble, take away that middle of the field or that short game, then the Patriots will,
35:41 you know, hopefully be in a better position to win this one.
35:44 Hopefully, I'm gonna go with Dietrich Weiss as my X factor.
35:47 He's going to be having a quietly good year.
35:49 He's usually in on most sacks.
35:51 Barmore's getting a lot of attention and rightly so.
35:53 But Dietrich Weiss has been a pretty good, pretty solid guy for them.
35:55 I think they are going to win this game.
35:57 It's going to be up front.
35:58 They're going to put pressure on Minshew, force some mistakes, force him to take those
36:01 risks that he likes to take that maybe he shouldn't be taking.
36:04 Maybe get a couple of deep picks from Kyle Duggar or Jonathan Jones.
36:08 Maybe Miles Bryant shows up.
36:10 He's just really not a very good quarterback this year.
36:12 Maybe he surprises us this year.
36:13 But if they are going to win this game, it's going to be getting pressure on Gardner Minshew
36:16 and it's going to be kind of collapsing in that pocket.
36:18 He's not the most mobile quarterback in the league for sure.
36:21 I think Patriots are coming off some pretty mobile quarterbacks.
36:23 But then again, Rich Hill, they did give up a 24-yard run on third and 23 last week to
36:29 the commander.
36:30 So maybe it's one of those situations where every quarterback is mobile against this unit.
36:34 Who knows?
36:35 Yeah, no, it's true.
36:37 The Patriots, I give their defense a lot more grace than the offense just because they've
36:42 been dealing with so many injuries.
36:45 This is the not fun fact is that the Patriots leader in quarterback hits in sacks is still
36:51 Matthew Judon and he hasn't played in the past five weeks.
36:54 So they just haven't been able to make up any of it.
36:57 Like Jawan Bentley is their top quarterback's hit of players that's active.
37:01 Like no one on their defensive front, like no one on their defensive.
37:05 They just are dealing with too many injuries.
37:08 Losing Christian Gonzalez has really gutted that secondary.
37:11 Losing Judon has gutted the defensive front.
37:13 Like they have no leeway.
37:16 That's the truth for most teams.
37:17 If you lose your top two players, you're going to be in a bad spot, especially when they're
37:22 such high leverage positions.
37:24 You know, it's one thing if you lose your best players and it's like a nose tackle and
37:27 a safety when you know their important roles, don't get me wrong, but having a top cornerback
37:32 and a top pass rusher is way more valuable in today's NFL.
37:36 And so the Patriots defense is going to be overpowered.
37:39 It's not their fault.
37:40 I think they still have some really good pieces.
37:42 They can put up a good game.
37:45 But this is a Colt offense that has been pretty productive.
37:49 Again, like seventh and point scored overall.
37:53 I know some of the benefits of the defense, but like they can make things happen.
37:58 They're effective on the ground.
37:59 And this is one of those situations where if the Patriots fall behind a little bit,
38:03 I feel like the Colts maybe flip the script on the Patriots and just be able to run the
38:08 ball really effectively and run down the clock.
38:11 Yeah.
38:12 I mean, again, we talked about it in past podcasts, like this team just isn't built
38:15 to come back.
38:17 It's like, oh, three nothing.
38:18 Well, game's over, I guess.
38:20 I feel like if they could take a 10 point lead and it's still not going to matter because
38:23 I feel like these points are so hard to come by for this offense, unless they somehow come
38:29 up to like a commanding, like 28 to nothing lead somehow off like six botched punts or
38:33 whatever, they're just not going to be ever comfortable in their lead.
38:38 And with a Colts team that can score points, not at will, but pretty consistently at the
38:43 very least, they know how to play clock control offense.
38:45 It could be a long day.
38:47 I'll throw either longer flight back to that end.
38:50 Rich Hill, I think it's time for some predictions.
38:53 Last week, let's see.
38:54 I was stupid enough to think the Patriots would beat the Washington commanders at home.
38:58 What an idiot.
38:59 You had the commanders winning that one 17 to 13.
39:02 Not that far off, Rich.
39:04 So good work.
39:05 The camera is back on your side of the table.
39:08 Patriots are technically quote unquote hosting the Colts at 930 AM over in Germany.
39:12 Who do you got?
39:14 Yeah, I'm going with the Colts on this one.
39:18 I mentioned this last week that like we are watching the end of days for the Patriots
39:24 right now.
39:25 They just don't have the horses and the Colts do.
39:29 And I'm going to have the Colts winning this one, something like 24 to 13.
39:33 This Patriots offense, I just have no trust in, as you said, unless it's like a broken
39:39 play, like the Farrow Brown touchdown against the Jets, or it's that 64 yard remandre Stevenson
39:44 run.
39:45 They're not scoring touchdowns on elongated drives and they're only scoring if their defense
39:50 gets them the ball in scoring position.
39:53 Maybe they get a touchdown out of it more often than not.
39:56 They're getting the ball in field goal range and settling for a field goal.
39:59 And so I don't see the Patriots being able to pull this one off.
40:03 This is not a great Colts defense.
40:06 You know, they gave up 37 of the Jaguars, 39 to the Browns, 38 to the Saints in consecutive
40:10 weeks before limiting the Panthers to 13.
40:13 But we've seen the Patriots play really bad defensive.
40:18 Commanders ranked 31st on defense before the Patriots played them.
40:20 The Raiders Saints, they're both bottom units and the Patriots couldn't score more than
40:25 17.
40:26 So this is one of those games where I don't think the Patriots have it.
40:29 I think that we're just watching the slow march towards the end of the season.
40:34 And I just hope that all the players stay healthy.
40:36 All right.
40:37 Colts, 24 to 13 for Rich Hill.
40:40 I'll make it easy for next week.
40:41 I will take the Patriots mainly because it's Germany.
40:45 Those games are always kind of wonky.
40:47 You never know what's going to happen.
40:49 The Patriots have yet to register a special teams or defensive touchdown in 2023.
40:54 They're going to get one.
40:55 I'm going to call this week to be the one, either a punt return or a fumble recovery
40:59 or a pick six.
41:00 Something happens non-offensively to points on the board.
41:03 And that's going to be enough to get the Patriots over the Colts.
41:05 We're going to have a bad day.
41:07 They'll be jet lagged.
41:08 It's 930 in the morning.
41:09 Maybe there'll be more Patriots fans in the stands than Colts fans.
41:11 I don't know what the makeup is for these Germany overseas games.
41:15 If it's expats, if it's actual Germans who know, but maybe there's a home field advantage
41:20 and maybe Mac Jones has some German ancestry or something.
41:23 I don't know what his lineage is.
41:24 Maybe we'll bring Sebastian Vollmer out of retirement.
41:26 He can translate.
41:27 But I think the Patriots win this one in a squeaker on some special teams or defensive
41:31 nonsense 20 to 17.
41:33 I mean, I'll take nonsense.
41:35 I will not oppose nonsense.
41:37 However, will you be upset if the Patriots win this game because it hurts their draft
41:41 stock?
41:42 I mean, it's weird, but kind of.
41:47 It's one where it's like, I don't know if they win and it feels good.
41:50 It feels like, okay.
41:53 They are utilizing motion.
41:55 Demario Douglas puts up has himself a monster day.
41:59 Romandre Stevenson goes for 200 yard.
42:01 Like if it's if they do it in good fashion, then I'm cool with that.
42:05 I'm cool with that.
42:06 If it's like a Pyrrhic victory and every single player is both left or hurt and or, you know,
42:13 it's a three zero game.
42:15 I'm just like, just lose.
42:18 Just lose.
42:19 I don't like there's no value at this point in winning a bad game.
42:22 There is some value in winning if it feels like it's going to turn just like the mentality
42:26 of this team around in the long term.
42:29 There is value to winning if it feels like, oh, maybe the offense has clicked or that
42:35 the team is playing with fire that we haven't seen in a while.
42:38 If we're seeing a commitment that we just haven't seen for a couple of years, we're
42:42 seeing a buy in.
42:43 Cool.
42:44 I'd be okay with that.
42:46 I'm fine with winning for the culture and then maybe setting up for more success next
42:50 year.
42:51 But if it's an ugly one, lose the heck out of that game.
42:55 Speaking of buying in, Rachel, the big win is the Patriots have a buy after this game.
43:00 So what happens?
43:02 We get a week off from watching this.
43:04 So as of I'm actually all in on these nine thirty games because it'd be nice to have
43:07 the Patriots game over by like noon on Sunday so I can get out with my life.
43:12 And the fact that I'll have from twelve thirty p.m. until like one p.m. in two weeks to not
43:18 think about this team for once.
43:19 I'm kind of looking forward to that.
43:21 Usually the byweeks like oh nothing get healthy, get some guys back, make the playoff push,
43:25 kind of regroup a bit.
43:26 Now it's just like there's no way they can lose on a late turnover in week eleven.
43:30 And that's nice.
43:31 Yeah, no, totally.
43:33 And we have a lot to look forward to when they come back from the bye week.
43:37 I'll have you know, they'll be on the road against the New York Giants, which, as I said
43:45 at the beginning of this podcast, probably the only other team that I would say the Patriots
43:50 would be like, maybe we don't want to switch spots with them.
43:54 It's going to be a battle of the two worst teams in the league from a long term perspective.
44:00 They are a total mess.
44:02 But who knows?
44:04 Maybe that could make the game interesting.
44:06 Maybe.
44:07 But we will worry about that in a couple of weeks.
44:11 Let's just get through this Colts game.
44:12 Let's get over there.
44:13 I'm rooting for the win.
44:14 I'm rooting for a convincing win.
44:16 And I'm rooting to at least build some momentum into the latter half of the season.
44:20 We're over the Humperdhill.
44:22 We're more than halfway there.
44:24 And the finish line isn't completely in sight yet.
44:26 But like I can kind of see the season coming to a close, which is also a nice win.
44:31 Totally.
44:32 Yeah.
44:33 I mean, there's not a lot to root for right now.
44:36 But I do think that the Patriots will be set up.
44:41 They have the most cap space in the league heading into next year.
44:44 They should have one of the top draft picks.
44:46 They will have good defensive players coming back for next year.
44:50 They have the pieces to make it more exciting.
44:53 I kind of just want to see Belichick get the record and then retire.
45:00 I know that'll be a few years.
45:01 I know they have to figure out the offense.
45:04 But I hope they do.
45:05 I hope they do.
45:06 Because I'd rather see him go off into the sunset with the all-time wins record versus
45:10 get fired mid-year after losing it in Germany.
45:13 Yeah.
45:14 That's no...
45:15 That'll be the worst thing to ever happen in Germany, as far as I'm concerned.
45:21 Well, until...
45:23 We'll see how the Patriots do against the Colts this week.
45:27 I hope that I'm wrong.
45:29 I hope that they win.
45:30 And I hope that it's a fun game.
45:32 I hope that the Patriots are able to pull it off in a way that is convincing.
45:36 But we'll be breaking it down next week before we head into the bye week.
45:38 Alec, do you have any final thoughts?
45:41 No.
45:42 No, I don't.
45:43 I don't.
45:44 I don't.
45:45 All right.
45:46 Well, until next time, Alec, you have a good one.
45:49 See ya, buddy.
45:50 Later.
45:51 Later.
45:51 Later.
45:52 Later.
45:52 Later.
45:53 Later.
45:53 Later.
45:54 Later.
45:54 Later.
45:55 Later.
45:55 Later.
45:56 Later.
45:56 Later.
45:57 Later.
45:57 (upbeat music)
46:00 (upbeat music)
