AccuWeather's Justin Povick breaks down what you need to know about potential tropical development in the Atlantic this week.
Transcript
00:00 Now we are in the month of August and you've got a top tropics if you are into August climatologically speaking
00:06 Historical averages you you start to see a bit of an increase in activity when all those conditions all those ingredients start to mesh
00:13 And come together, so let's see if anything's brewing out over the open Atlantic perhaps the Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico
00:19 boils down to these three key ingredients
00:22 The warm water the sea surface water temperature and you look to see that threshold right around 80 degrees
00:28 Lots of warm water in place right now wind shear can also be a determining factor here
00:33 You have too much wind higher up in the atmosphere that can tend to
00:36 elongate shred and really disrupt the circulation center involving those
00:41 Thunderstorms and speaking of thunderstorms while you think about tropical systems
00:45 You got moisture right well think about impacts tropical systems have a lot of water
00:51 You don't have a lot of moisture in place
00:53 you're not going to see as many thunderstorms that can prohibit deep convection and therefore not looking at that as favorable of
01:00 An environment well now the sea surface water temperatures speak for themselves
01:04 They're running above the historical average here throughout the Atlantic into the Gulf of Mexico and into the Caribbean that alone though does not mean
01:11 We're going to be talking about tropical development one area where conditions are again somewhat favorable
01:17 We're looking at a low development potential here east of Bermuda, but I'll tell you what here's the bottom line
01:21 Here's what you need to know
01:23 This area of showers and thunderstorms is not going to be a threat to land
01:28 This is going to make its way out over the open waters as we work our way right through midweek
01:32 The winds higher up in the atmosphere will be steering it off to the north and east meanwhile though
01:37 We are following Dora, but here too again door making its way out to the west over the open waters
