00:00 Hey everybody, time to saddle up for a pony party.
00:06 I'm Lori Gelman from Howdini.com and this is a very versatile party for either boys
00:11 or girls.
00:12 Girls can bedazzle horseshoes to hang on their bedroom doors and boys can have a round up
00:16 gathering up toy horses that have been hidden around the house or the yard.
00:19 I can't wait to get to this cake which your little riders are going to love.
00:23 So let's gallop into the kitchen where Aleve Hanson for the Betty Crocker Kitchens is going
00:27 to show us how it's done.
00:30 How are you?
00:31 I'm good Lori.
00:32 Did I scare you?
00:33 You did.
00:34 Sorry about that.
00:35 I think a pony cake is a great idea.
00:36 It's fun.
00:37 And very simple to do too.
00:38 Okay, well I'm going to show you how.
00:40 Good.
00:41 Okay, I started with two 9 inch round cakes and we're going to cut the dome off so it's
00:44 nice and level.
00:45 Good idea.
00:47 Mostly you use yellow cake but can you use chocolate for something like this?
00:50 Oh yeah, you can use chocolate, yellow cake, whatever is your favorite.
00:53 Okay.
00:54 I'm going to flip that over and I'm going to do the same for this one.
01:03 And now this cake we use templates.
01:06 So we have the body template.
01:07 We're just going to place that down.
01:09 And then we have the head and the tail which are just arranged to fit on there.
01:14 And then we just cut it out with a smaller serrated knife.
01:17 Use the paper as a guideline.
01:19 And just remove that.
01:26 And the same for the head.
01:30 Had you chilled your cake before you did this cutting?
01:32 I did.
01:33 Yeah.
01:34 You have to chill them because that will reduce the amount of crumbs that you have in your
01:38 final coat of frosting.
01:39 Okay.
01:40 Okay.
01:41 So now we're going to arrange the pieces on our board.
01:44 So the body goes in the center.
01:46 Okay.
01:47 And then the head and the tail.
01:55 So the next step is we're going to do a crumb coat.
01:57 Okay.
01:58 And crumb coat is basically just a thin layer of frosting that seals in all the crumbs.
02:01 And I have one already.
02:02 I'll take this one out.
02:04 Okay.
02:05 Here we go.
02:08 Crumb coat looks good.
02:09 Yep.
02:10 So now we're going to do the final coat.
02:12 Okay.
02:13 And this frosting is made with a combination of vanilla and chocolate mixed together to
02:16 get a lighter brown.
02:17 Sort of lighter brown.
02:18 And I notice you always put a big dollop in the middle of the cake and then spread from
02:27 there.
02:28 Is that something that's important to do?
02:29 It makes frosting the top of the cake a lot easier because you have a lot to work with
02:32 and you don't have to keep going back and forth to the bowl.
02:37 My five-year-old loves ponies.
02:39 This would be a great cake for her.
02:41 It really would.
02:42 Yeah.
02:43 So now it's time to take off the excess frosting off the top.
02:45 I'm just going to come in.
02:47 Like a plane landing?
02:48 That's my plane landing.
02:49 That's a plane landing trick.
02:50 And then taking off again.
02:51 You just work your way around the perimeter of the cake, always swiping towards the center
02:58 of the area that you're working at.
03:02 And after each pass, I scrape off the excess frosting.
03:17 So I'm just going to clean up the edges a little bit.
03:21 Just scrape it off.
03:23 Looks good.
03:25 So the next step is we're actually going to pipe a mane and a tail with the chocolate
03:29 and a little blanket with the pink.
03:31 So I'm going to show you a little bit how to do the tail.
03:33 Basically, you're just going to start around here, squeeze, and then pull down.
03:38 And as you're pulling down, you reach the bottom, you release the pressure, and that'll
03:42 create the little tail.
03:43 You want to try one?
03:44 Oh, yeah.
03:45 You want me to try?
03:46 Oh, sure.
03:47 So I do them right beside each other, right?
03:48 Yeah.
03:49 Okay.
03:50 I'll leave.
03:51 You can do it, Lori.
03:52 Here I go.
03:53 Great.
03:54 Okay.
03:55 I'm just going to bring it up just a little bit further here.
04:03 And you can just pipe it on the top, or if you want, you can even bring it down around
04:07 the sides.
04:08 That looks pretty.
04:09 And then a mane.
04:10 So we'll bring it down here from about the ear.
04:11 And then maybe a little tuft here.
04:12 Oh, cute.
04:13 I'm really good with the eyes, so.
04:14 Let me put those in.
04:27 Okay.
04:28 How about right there?
04:29 That looks good.
04:30 Okay.
04:31 I'm going to use pink frosting to pipe on the blanket.
04:33 Cute.
04:34 I'm just going to outline it first, and then I'm going to fill in, and then I'll smooth
04:38 it out.
04:39 And then just smooth it.
04:40 Two more things that we'll do with chocolate.
04:48 One is the hooves.
04:49 And again, you can just pipe it on and then smooth it out.
05:02 And then let's do a number on top, maybe like a number three for the birthday girl who's
05:07 turning three.
05:08 And there you have it.
05:09 Looks great.
05:10 You know what I want to do is add a zero to it and take it home for my birthday.
05:15 And then you'll wake up.
05:16 That's right.
05:17 I will.
05:18 Thank you, Lee, from my dream.
05:19 And thanks to all the cake experts at the Betty Crocker Kitchen.
05:22 And you'll find more great birthday cakes, party ideas, and technique videos on Howdini.com.
