00:00 Hi there, I'm Laurie Gelman from Howdini.com and this is my new best friend.
00:08 This adorable robot cake is the star attraction of a robot party, one of the most versatile
00:12 party ideas out there.
00:14 Let's get started on the cake.
00:15 Liev Hansen for the Betty Crocker Kitchens is waiting to share some great tips.
00:19 Hey Liev, how are you?
00:20 Hi Laurie.
00:21 I can't believe we're going to make that robot cake out of this size cake.
00:25 I know, it's pretty cool, right?
00:26 Unbelievable, let's see it.
00:27 Okay, so this is a 13 by 9 inch cake.
00:30 The first thing you want to do, you want to have a level cake, so you're going to trim
00:32 off the dome.
00:33 And I'm using a serrated knife.
00:35 And instead of cutting right through, I like to rotate it a little bit.
00:38 It makes it a little easier, that way you make sure it's straight through.
00:42 And then you don't cut your hand too.
00:44 And then you just discard that, unless you want to snack on it.
00:46 Then I'll invert it, okay.
00:48 And then I'm going to want to cut three inch strips off of either side.
00:51 You can use a ruler, I'm just going to eyeball it.
00:54 Okay.
00:55 And one of these three inch strips, I'm going to cut another three inch piece off of.
01:01 Okay.
01:02 And now we can start arranging it.
01:04 This will be the head.
01:07 This will be the body.
01:09 And this will be sort of like the legs or the rollers.
01:12 But before we start frosting it or crumb coating it, I'm going to cut a little beveled edge
01:18 here and here.
01:20 It lines up with the bottom of the body.
01:22 Okay.
01:23 So what I would do is do a crumb coat because there are exposed cut edges.
01:26 And I already have one ready, so you want to grab that for me?
01:28 Okay.
01:29 That's a stunning color of frosting.
01:31 This is our sort of steel gray.
01:33 And to get this color, it's not just black, we actually put a little blue into it.
01:38 I like this pale color here.
01:40 Is your son into robots?
01:42 He is actually.
01:43 Is he?
01:44 Yes.
01:45 Robots that transform into other things.
01:49 Now I'm frosting the entire cake, but I'm not worrying too much about how it looks yet.
01:54 I'm just trying to get it all covered.
01:56 Right.
01:57 And then I'll try to smooth it out.
01:59 So while you're frosting, I mean, you've put it on this beautiful yellow, looks like a
02:03 gorgeous yellow platter, but it's really just what?
02:05 It's actually just a cardboard covered in wrapping paper.
02:09 So if you don't have a large enough serving tray, just wrap one up.
02:12 That's great.
02:13 So now, as since I've done all the sides, you'll notice like a little lip formed.
02:16 I'm going to come in like an airplane landing and scrape off the excess.
02:21 And after each pass, I like to scrape off the frosting.
02:25 Otherwise, if you come back and frost again, then this excess frosting is going to go on
02:29 the side and make it look a little messy again.
02:32 Yeah.
02:33 Okay.
02:34 So now it's frosted and we can start decorating it.
02:37 That's the magic in this cake, truly, is the decorating.
02:39 Okay.
02:40 Now, what I'm going to do here is I'm just going to do a little bit of texture just on
02:44 the bottom because that's where the little rollers are going to go.
02:48 Yeah.
02:49 Okay.
02:50 So now I'm going to take Fruit by the Foot snack and we're going to cut it and make a
02:54 square here that we're going to fill in with little buttons.
02:59 The busy work.
03:00 The busy work.
03:01 Okay.
03:02 So it'll stick right to the frosting.
03:05 That looks really cool.
03:06 So that's his little communication system or whatever it is.
03:12 Yes.
03:13 Okay.
03:14 So now what you can do is you can just start putting little chocolate candies in.
03:17 Okay.
03:18 And while you do that, I'm going to start with the arms.
03:23 The arms are actually just made with pull-apart licorice.
03:25 I'm going to take a long strip of it and I'm actually just going to tie a little knot in
03:29 it to shorten it a little bit.
03:31 And then you just stick it right inside the cake.
03:35 And you can make the arms go in all different directions.
03:40 I'm going to just reach over you on this side.
03:46 So he's like this?
03:47 Yes.
03:48 All right.
03:49 And some of the extra pieces, you can actually just do some highlights there.
03:54 Okay.
03:55 All right.
03:56 Okay.
03:57 So then I'm going to put the little rollers on.
03:59 These are just little chocolate wafer cookies.
04:00 Yeah, I love those.
04:01 And all you have to do is just press it right into the cake.
04:04 And we'll line up a few of them.
04:07 How many wheels does she have?
04:08 Oh, let's see.
04:09 I'm saying, I'm thinking she'll have either six or seven.
04:13 Let's...
04:14 Okay.
04:15 She's a six-wheeler.
04:16 But she needs a face.
04:17 She does.
04:18 So let's use some of those little jelly circles and you can...
04:19 Those are the eyes?
04:20 Those are the eyes.
04:21 And then you can always put like a little candy even in the center.
04:24 Give it a little pupil.
04:28 Is this a nose by any chance?
04:30 Those are ears.
04:31 Oh, okay.
04:32 They're going to go right on the side there.
04:35 And then it gets a little bit of a worried expression there, a little zigzag face.
04:41 And then just a couple more accents.
04:43 I'm going to use more of this licorice.
04:46 I got the colored licorice.
04:47 And what I did is I actually cut it.
04:49 I'll show you how I did.
04:50 You just take a scissor and just cut in between the ridges here.
04:54 Where do you get licorice that color?
04:56 I've never seen blue licorice.
04:57 You can get them at grocery stores.
04:58 Really?
04:59 Yeah.
05:00 And these are going to be like little antenna.
05:01 And again, those just get stuck right into the top of the cake.
05:06 You can fan it out a little bit.
05:15 And I'm going to use the same licorice just to connect the head to the body.
05:19 I wonder why you left the head.
05:20 Cut it to size.
05:21 I'm going to do two.
05:31 Oh my gosh.
05:33 This is great.
05:34 I mean, I think every home should have a robot, especially if it's as cute as this one.
05:37 Thank you so much.
05:38 Thanks, Lori.
