00:00 Hi, I'm Lori Gelman for Howdini.com.
00:07 Welcome to a pirate party.
00:08 We're going to have a scavenger hunt to search for buried treasure.
00:11 And no matter what the age is, everyone can help loot the pinata treasure chest and collect
00:15 as many gold coins as their little hands can carry.
00:18 At the center of it all, a pirate cake, of course.
00:21 Any landlubber or mom can make this cake with a little help from our friend, Leve Hansen,
00:25 for Betty Crocker Kitchens.
00:26 Let's go see how she does it.
00:28 Hey, Leve, how are you?
00:29 Hi, Lori.
00:30 Good to see you.
00:31 You too.
00:32 Are we going to make a pirate cake today?
00:33 Yes, we are, matey.
00:34 Good girl.
00:35 All right.
00:36 Okay, well, I'll tell you what we need.
00:37 We need a nine-inch cake, an eight-inch cake, two containers of vanilla frosting, one container
00:42 of chocolate frosting, some assorted candies, and my own template for the hat.
00:47 I'm just going to place it down on the cake and cut around it.
00:50 Okay, so we're going to place that down there, the hat, and this is going to be the body.
00:54 You can put a little jaunty angle there.
00:56 Then I'm going to take this cake.
00:58 I'm just going to slice a little portion off.
01:00 There we go.
01:01 This is going to be the head.
01:02 I see.
01:03 It goes underneath the hat.
01:04 Yeah, right there.
01:05 Okay.
01:06 Now I'm going to cut the nose out of this piece.
01:11 Let's put that in the center there.
01:14 Now we're just going to cut little portions off.
01:19 And place it over here.
01:20 There's one ear.
01:21 I have the other one ready.
01:23 Just place it on there.
01:24 It's got big ears there, Leve.
01:26 It does.
01:27 Would you mind taking that away?
01:28 Sure.
01:29 Can I eat some of it?
01:30 Sure.
01:31 We're going to mix up some frosting now.
01:32 Okay.
01:33 We just need one tub of vanilla.
01:35 That'll be for his body.
01:37 A little bit of chocolate for his hat.
01:39 Then we're going to mix a little flesh tone.
01:42 To do that, I'm going to take a bowl, and I'll show you how.
01:45 You don't need food coloring?
01:46 We don't need food coloring.
01:47 We're actually going to use just a little bit of chocolate frosting to tint it.
01:52 Okay.
01:53 Just a little bit.
01:57 Maybe like two teaspoons.
01:58 But the darker flesh tone you want, just add more chocolate.
02:01 Okay.
02:02 I just want to see if there's a nice contrast against the white.
02:07 That looks pretty good.
02:09 Okay.
02:10 Now we're going to do a crumb coat.
02:13 You're going to crumb coat it with the color that the final coat is going to be.
02:16 I'll start with the bottom here.
02:20 You don't have to do neat, but I guess you have to be thorough.
02:22 Make sure you get the whole thing.
02:23 You don't want to get the entire cake covered.
02:25 If there's a little bit, those crumbs could possibly show through in your final coat.
02:30 Once you have it all covered, for best results, I recommend freezing it for a little while,
02:34 maybe half an hour.
02:35 That will firm up the icing.
02:37 If you don't have room in your freezer?
02:38 You can just chill it in the refrigerator also.
02:40 I actually have one in the freezer.
02:42 Let me go get it.
02:43 Okay.
02:44 Okay, great.
02:45 Now this one's ready to go, and I'm going to put the final coat of frosting on.
02:47 I'm going to start with the chocolate.
02:49 Oh, yeah.
02:50 Lay it on there, baby.
02:52 Yeah, nice and thick for all those chocolate lovers.
03:02 Is there such a thing as too much frosting?
03:04 I would go maybe tops half an inch thick.
03:07 I'm just going around the sides and trying to make them smooth, and then I'm going to
03:12 do the top.
03:13 Basically, a little lip of frosting forms, and then I can just scrape it off.
03:19 Oh, it makes it nice and smooth.
03:21 Yeah.
03:22 You're using a special tool for that?
03:24 This is an offset spatula.
03:26 So when you're frosting a cake, it's a good idea to have a bowl of hot water handy.
03:30 That way you can clean off your spatula.
03:31 Just make sure you dry it off afterwards.
03:34 And then this heat will give you a nice, smooth finish.
03:37 Oh, that's how you do it.
03:39 So now we're going to start decorating.
03:40 Great.
03:41 And here we have a nice assortment of candy.
03:43 I think maybe we'll start with the little band that goes across his hat, and for that
03:48 we're using licorice.
03:49 How fun.
03:50 And basically, you just place it down, and then once it's down, you have a little leftover
03:54 on the edge, just take your scissor and cut it off.
03:58 Okay, so next, maybe we'll do his eye patch.
04:03 So I'm going to take another piece of licorice.
04:04 This one's red.
04:05 And I'm just going to drape it across and over, and again, I'm going to just trim a
04:12 little bit off, and I'm going to have it come over the edge.
04:17 And then we're going to use a little mint patty.
04:19 Oh, good trick.
04:20 I like it.
04:21 That's great.
04:22 Isn't that cute?
04:23 Now, for the other eye, you can just take a marshmallow.
04:26 I'm going to cut it in half, and I'm going to stick it down, and he's going to have a
04:32 blue eye.
04:33 So I'm going to use a little chocolate candy here, and you can actually use a little bit
04:37 of the frosting to glue it on.
04:39 Okay?
04:40 I'm going to use a little bit of fruit by the foot, and I'm going to cut it into the
04:43 shape of a mouth.
04:44 A smile?
04:46 A smile.
04:47 That would be nice.
04:48 A smile.
04:49 And then we're going to place it down.
04:52 Now it's time to make the teeth.
04:53 Oh, he gets teeth.
04:54 Yep.
04:55 He's smiling.
04:56 Teeth are showing.
04:57 All right, let him smile for the cameras over here.
04:58 Show them this way.
04:59 Good idea.
05:00 Okay, I'm going to put one there, and another one there.
05:04 Ooh, he looks good.
05:05 Now we're going to put some stripes on his shirt.
05:07 Okay.
05:08 You can use fruit by the foot, or you can buy these sugared candies like this.
05:12 And we're just going to spread it across him.
05:16 And if it's too long, you can just use a knife or a scissor to cut it to the right length.
05:23 What else?
05:24 We're going to put an earring on.
05:25 Okay.
05:26 He's using little gummy candies.
05:27 I'm just going to cut a little hole in it here, a little piece out of it, and then as
05:33 if it's sticking in his ear.
05:35 Okay, so there's...
05:36 He looks great.
05:37 Well, there's one more thing.
05:38 Oh, really?
05:39 Yeah.
05:40 Stubble.
05:41 And we're going to use little chocolate jimmies.
05:42 Now a great tip if your frosting has set is just to take a little more frosting and spread
05:47 it on.
05:48 That way you're sure that the jimmies will stick.
05:52 Can I sprinkle while you frost?
05:53 Sure, that's a great idea.
05:55 Count on me to make a mess.
05:59 That is a great looking pirate cake.
06:00 Thanks, Lori.
06:01 Thank you.
06:02 Now go walk the plank.
06:03 You did a fine job, Leslie.
06:04 Okay, lady.
06:05 Thanks, Lee.
06:06 And don't forget to give your little buccaneers a treasure chest that they can paint and take
06:09 home as a party favor.
06:10 I'm Lori Gelman for Howdini.com.
