00:00 Hey everybody, it's time to make like our favorite real life superheroes and have a
00:07 firefighters party.
00:08 I'm Lori Gelman from Howdini.com.
00:11 We're going to have a bucket brigade race and an obstacle course in the backyard.
00:14 And as you can see, we've got everything we need to spring into action, including this
00:19 fantastic fire engine cake.
00:21 Our friend, Liev Hansen, from the Betty Crocker Kitchens is back at the firehouse, I mean
00:25 the kitchen, so let's get started.
00:27 Hey Liev, good to see you.
00:29 Hey Lori.
00:30 I love that we're doing a fire engine cake to honor America's Bravest, so cool.
00:33 Well, our fire engine is going to be bright red.
00:35 Great.
00:36 Okay, to start, I've baked chocolate cake in an 8 by 4 inch pan.
00:40 Okay.
00:41 And we're going to start by cutting off the domes, leveling them off a little bit.
00:44 I'm using a serrated knife and just cutting across.
00:47 So now, we're going to take the first piece here that we cut, we're going to lay it on
00:52 here, and the next one, we're going to cut just a little piece off, and we're going to
00:59 lay it down here, just to lay it out.
01:00 We'll put a little bit of frosting on to connect it later.
01:03 Okay.
01:04 And then this last one, we're going to cut right in half.
01:08 Those are going to connect like that, and that'll be the front of our fire engine.
01:11 Oh wow, very cool.
01:12 You can see it already coming together, right?
01:13 Yeah, definitely.
01:14 So now we're going to take a little bit of frosting, just to connect the pieces.
01:18 So you can just lay it right on there.
01:22 That is some seriously red frosting.
01:24 And we'll do the same here.
01:26 Is that just simple food coloring?
01:28 Yep.
01:29 To get a really vibrant color, you can use a gel food coloring.
01:33 And also, if the cake moves a little bit, you can always put a little bit underneath.
01:37 So this one's ready to be crumb coated.
01:38 Luckily, I already have one ready to go.
01:41 So this was in the refrigerator for about an hour, I think.
01:44 Yeah, that'll firm up the frosting, so your final coat will be nice and clean.
01:47 I'm going to go ahead and start to frost it.
01:50 I'm going to put a nice size dollop on top here, and on top here.
01:55 Wow, that seems like a lot to put on at first.
01:57 It's a lot, but we're going to spread it all out, and we'll even take the excess off after
02:01 we've smoothed it all.
02:03 And now, when you do the top here, you want the frosting to come over the edges a little
02:07 bit, because that'll help you frost the sides.
02:09 So I'm going to come in here.
02:12 Okay, so now I'm frosting the sides again, just to get them smooth.
02:18 And a little bit of frosting will hopefully go up over the edge and form a lip, which
02:23 will make it easier to smooth out the top.
02:25 So here I'm going to come in like an airplane landing, scrape, and take off.
02:31 We're almost done with this part.
02:34 Now Lori, while I'm doing these last steps, maybe you could take some of that white frosting
02:38 and scoop it into the bowl, and add a little drop of our black food coloring, so we can
02:41 make some gray.
02:42 Okay.
02:43 Well, while you do that, I'm just going to try to neaten up this edge a little bit.
02:51 That looks great.
02:53 I'll take that and I'll fill up a pastry bag.
02:56 Okay, I'm going to put the cap on this before I ruin anything.
02:58 That's a good idea.
02:59 Always put the caps on your food coloring.
03:01 Okay, I'm using a disposable pastry bag.
03:04 You can use a pastry cone, you can use a freezer bag.
03:08 Oh, that's a great idea.
03:09 I have, it'll work for this.
03:12 And I'm just going to fill it up.
03:13 How big of a hole do you cut in the bottom?
03:15 For this, I'm going to cut a medium-sized hole, which is probably between an eighth
03:18 of an inch and a quarter of an inch diameter.
03:23 So this is about a quarter of an inch, maybe a little bit smaller.
03:26 Okay.
03:27 First, I'm just going to fill in this little area here with a little gray, give it a little
03:33 separation, a little metallic separation here.
03:37 And go down here.
03:40 And then I'm going to come back with my spatula again, I'm going to use this one, and just
03:45 smooth it out a little.
03:54 Then before I do any more piping, we're going to put on some little cookie wheels.
03:57 Oh, okay.
03:58 These are little chocolate sandwich cookies.
03:59 I'm going to put one there, one here, and then we'll do two on the other side.
04:06 Okay.
04:07 So now, I'm going to pipe little hubcaps, which are basically just little dots in the
04:14 center.
04:15 You just don't want to miss any good details.
04:16 No.
04:17 Okay, so now I'm going to do a border.
04:18 I'm just going to pull down, across, and then follow that bottom edge, and then up around
04:24 the wheel again.
04:25 Okay, I'm going to do that on both sides.
04:28 And then, I'm going to get the front bumper.
04:32 This one you can actually do it a little bit thicker, maybe two stripes.
04:39 Just smooth it out.
04:43 So now, we're going to do a couple more piped accents.
04:46 And I've already filled up another pastry bag with white.
04:49 So we're going to do a window in the front, and I'm going to pipe the outline of the window,
04:58 and then fill it in.
04:59 Wow, that looks great.
05:02 And then again, come back and smooth it out.
05:08 I'm going to do two side windows.
05:17 So now, I'm going to pipe the ladder on top.
05:20 Just squeeze a line across, and then another one parallel to it, and you're going to do
05:27 lines across.
05:28 I'm trying to think of what else there is on a fire engine.
05:32 We have the hoses.
05:33 Do you want to put on these?
05:34 Yeah.
05:35 Those little licorice spirals there.
05:37 Yeah, we can put one on each side.
05:38 Okay, right here?
05:39 Mm-hmm.
05:40 These aren't too big?
05:41 No, that'll be perfect.
05:42 There you go.
05:45 So now, I'm going to put some little white dots here, and that's going to show us where
05:49 we're going to put our flashing lights.
05:51 Maybe we'll alternate red and yellow up there, maybe two red there.
05:55 Do you want to do that?
05:56 I've got gumdrops here.
05:57 I'll start with green.
05:58 I'll put them on there.
05:59 I'm just going to put dots for the back headlights.
06:02 Perfect.
06:03 And voila!
06:04 So we're done.
06:06 That looks fantastic!
06:07 It looks like it's ready to race off and put out a fire somewhere, that's for sure.
06:10 Thank you.
06:11 This was so much fun to make.
06:12 I think anyone who makes this cake is going to be a big hero to their kids.
06:15 Thanks so much, Lee.
06:16 Thanks, Lori.
06:17 And you know, there's lots more great birthday cake ideas from the cake experts at the Betty
06:19 Crocker Kitchens on Howdini.com.
