00:08 Hey everybody, it's time to make like our favorite real life superheroes and have a
00:12 firefighters party. I'm Lori Gelman. We're going to have a bucket brigade race and an
00:16 obstacle course in the backyard. And as you can see, we've got everything we need to
00:21 spring into action, including this fantastic fire engine cake. Our friend, Liev Hansen,
00:25 for the Betty Crocker Kitchens is back at the firehouse, I mean the kitchen. So let's
00:30 get started.
00:31 Hey Liev, good to see you.
00:33 Hey Lori.
00:34 I love that we're doing a fire engine cake to honor America's Bravest. So cool.
00:37 Well, our fire engine is going to be bright red.
00:39 Great.
00:40 Okay. To start, a big chocolate cake in an 8 by 4 inch pan.
00:43 Okay.
00:44 And we're going to start by cutting off the domes, leveling them off a little bit.
00:48 Using a serrated knife, I'm just cutting across. So now we're going to take the first
00:53 piece here that we cut. We're going to lay it on here. And the next one, we're going
00:58 to cut just a little piece off. And we're going to lay it down here, just to lay it
01:03 out. We'll put a little bit of frosting on to connect it later.
01:06 Okay.
01:07 And this last one, we're going to cut right in half. Those are going to connect like
01:12 that. And that'll be the front of our fire engine.
01:14 Oh wow. Very cool.
01:15 You can see it already coming together, right?
01:17 Yeah, definitely.
01:18 And now we're going to take a little bit of frosting, just to connect the pieces. So
01:22 you can just lay it right on there.
01:25 That is some seriously red frosting.
01:27 And we'll do the same here.
01:29 Is that just simple food coloring?
01:31 Yep. To get a really vibrant color, you can use a gel food coloring. And also, if the
01:36 cake moves a little bit, you can always put a little bit underneath. So this one's
01:40 ready to be crumb coated. Luckily, I already have one ready to go.
01:44 So this was in the refrigerator for about an hour, I think.
01:47 Yeah. That'll firm up the frosting so your final coat will be nice and clean.
01:51 And I'm going to go ahead and start to frost it.
01:54 I'm going to put a nice size dollop on top here, and on top here.
01:59 Wow. That seems like a lot to put on at first.
02:01 It's a lot, but we're going to spread it all out. And we'll even take the excess
02:04 off after we've smoothed it all.
02:06 And now, when you do the top here, you want the frosting to come over the edges a
02:10 little bit.
02:11 Oh, you do. Okay.
02:12 Because that'll help you frost the sides.
02:13 I'm going to come in here. Okay. So now I'm frosting the sides again, just to get
02:20 them smooth. And a little bit of frosting will hopefully go up over the edge and
02:25 form a lip, which will make it easier to smooth out the top. So here I'm going to
02:30 come in like an airplane landing, scrape, and take off.
02:34 We're almost done with this part.
02:37 Now, Lori, while I'm doing these last steps, maybe you could take some of that
02:41 white frosting and scoop it into the bowl and add a little drop of our black food
02:44 coloring so we can make some gray.
02:46 Okay.
02:49 Well, while you do that, I'm just going to try to neaten up this edge a little
02:53 bit. Take that, and I'll fill up a pastry bag.
02:58 I'll put a cap on this before I ruin anything.
03:00 That's a good idea. Always put the caps on your food coloring.
03:03 Okay. I'm using a disposable pastry bag. You can use a pastry cone. You can use a
03:08 freezer bag.
03:09 Oh, that's a great idea.
03:10 Whatever you have, it'll work for this. I'm just going to fill it up.
03:14 How big a hole do you cut in the bottom?
03:16 For this, I'm going to cut a medium-sized hole, which is probably between an
03:19 eighth of an inch and a quarter of an inch diameter.
03:24 So this is about a quarter of an inch, maybe a little bit smaller.
03:28 First, I'm just going to fill in this little area here with a little gray, give
03:34 it a little separation, a little metallic separation here.
03:39 Go down here, and then I'm going to come back with my spatula again.
03:44 I'm going to use this one, and just smooth it out a little.
03:49 Then, before I do any more piping, we're going to put on some little cookie
03:52 wheels.
03:53 Okay.
03:54 These are little chocolate sandwich cookies.
03:56 I'm going to put one there, one here, and then we'll do two on the other side.
04:02 Okay.
04:03 Now, I'm going to pipe little hubcaps, which are basically just little dots in
04:08 the center.
04:09 You just don't want to miss any good details.
04:11 No.
04:12 Okay.
04:13 Now I'm going to do a border.
04:14 I'm just going to pull down, across, and then follow that bottom edge, and then
04:19 up around the wheel again.
04:21 Okay.
04:22 I'm going to do that on both sides.
04:23 Then, I'm going to get the front bumper.
04:27 This one, you can actually do it a little bit thicker, maybe two stripes.
04:34 Just smooth it out.
04:38 Now, we're going to do a couple more piped accents.
04:41 I've already filled up another pastry bag with white.
04:45 We're going to do a window in the front.
04:48 I'm going to pipe the outline of the window, and then fill it in.
04:55 Wow, that looks great.
04:57 Then again, come back and smooth it out.
05:06 I'm going to do two side windows.
05:13 Now, I'm going to pipe the ladder on top.
05:16 Just squeeze a line across, and then another one parallel to it.
05:21 Then, you're going to do lines across.
05:25 I'm trying to think of what else there is on a fire engine.
05:28 We have the hoses.
05:29 Do you want to put on these?
05:30 Yeah.
05:31 Those little licorice spirals there.
05:33 Yeah, which one?
05:34 Put one on each side.
05:35 Okay, right here?
05:36 Mm-hmm.
05:37 These aren't too big?
05:38 No, that'll be perfect.
05:39 There you go.
05:40 Now, I'm going to put some little white dots here, and that's going to show us where we're
05:44 going to put our flashing lights.
05:47 Maybe we'll alternate red and yellow up there, maybe two red there.
05:50 Do you want to do that?
05:51 Okay, gumdrops here.
05:52 I can do that with.
05:53 Great.
05:54 Put them on there.
05:55 I'm just going to put dots for the back headlights.
05:58 Perfect.
05:59 And, voila!
06:00 So, we're done.
06:01 That looks fantastic!
06:02 It looks like it's ready to race off and put out a fire somewhere, that's for sure.
06:05 Thank you.
06:06 This was so much fun to make.
06:07 I think anyone who makes this cake is going to be a big hero to their kids.
06:10 Thanks so much, Sleeve.
06:11 Thanks, Lori.
