00:00 Hey everybody, welcome to Facebook Live with Hairbrained.
00:05 I'm so excited to be here.
00:07 And this is Erica, my model.
00:09 We got Courtney behind the camera, Kelly's on her way,
00:12 and so she's gonna jump in when she gets here.
00:16 But what I wanted to do today is a short haircut
00:19 that is a little bit edgier and has a lot of texture in it.
00:22 So I've started with a horseshoe section on the top,
00:27 sectioned that out of the way.
00:28 You can see how she's got a little bit
00:30 of an undercut going on through the back here.
00:34 I'm going to work with that instead of taking it shorter
00:37 'cause I like how this color is coming through
00:40 where it's got a little bit of dimension in it.
00:43 So when you go like that, which is very technical,
00:45 going like that, you see the dimension in there.
00:49 So I've sectioned out the back area
00:55 with two diagonal sections coming back behind the ear.
00:59 That's going to stay the length that it is
01:02 'cause the end result,
01:02 we wanna keep a little bit of weight back here,
01:04 almost like it's a little bob,
01:06 and then we're gonna be taking the weight out of the sides,
01:09 taking the length out of the sides,
01:10 and then we're gonna do the top at the end.
01:13 So the goal is that we have something short,
01:17 but something short and a little bit different
01:19 than just a pixie or a really tight, you know,
01:24 high, as usual, I can't speak English,
01:29 so we'll just do some hair, and that way it'll be clear.
01:33 So I'm gonna start by working in the side area.
01:37 So there's my section that I'm leaving out,
01:41 and what I'm gonna do is just work from the back forward
01:45 so that my body position or my hand position is vertical.
01:50 So I'm just gonna pick this up.
01:54 I'm gonna leave it longer than the undercut,
01:57 so you can see how I've left it behind there,
02:00 and we're gonna cut a blunt line.
02:04 The reason that I'm cutting it blunt
02:06 is to keep it nice and strong on the ends of the hair,
02:11 and this is the part here where, too,
02:13 it's going to actually give the hair a more visible texture
02:17 by cutting the ends blunt because of the color,
02:19 if that makes sense.
02:20 So the color is solid and platinum,
02:25 so by cutting the ends blunt,
02:29 we almost make steps in the hair,
02:31 which is usually what you're trying to avoid,
02:33 and we want to see some of those strong ends in there.
02:37 So I'm just working with a traveling guide,
02:40 combing the hair out from the head,
02:43 and I'm cutting it at about an inch and a half.
02:45 So this'll have a little bit more
02:48 of a grown-out, softer look than just a typical,
02:52 you know, cutting it really, really short
02:54 and tight underneath,
02:55 and you can see how that is gonna move.
03:00 We have a sneaky piece behind the ear that got away,
03:05 and I've also had a double shot of espresso
03:08 and two cups of coffee,
03:10 so this haircut'll have even more texture.
03:13 And hopefully my fingers,
03:17 although I do have Band-Aids on standby just in case.
03:21 There we go.
03:23 - Got a lot of love, Ruth.
03:26 Melissa says hi.
03:27 - Hi, Melissa.
03:29 Thanks for the love, everybody.
03:31 I need it.
03:32 We all need a little love, right, Erica?
03:34 Yeah, see, Erica needs love, too, so.
03:37 - We all do, it's good for us.
03:38 - Love is good.
03:39 All right, so I'm just traveling along.
03:44 So the goal here is pretty much everything
03:46 that I'm cutting now is the same length
03:47 all the way through to the front.
03:50 And again, I like her regrowth.
03:56 I think it's cool,
03:58 and it gives a little bit more dep-dention,
04:01 which is dimension shortened into a longer word,
04:03 a short whatever.
04:05 Courtney, help me, help me.
04:08 - We've got a question.
04:09 Someone's asking what kind of shears are you using.
04:11 - Oh, these are Hikari New Cosmos
04:15 that I've used forever and ever.
04:17 They're five and a half inch shears,
04:20 so they're pretty tiny.
04:22 And I just like 'em 'cause they're part of my hand
04:25 as opposed to being a big shear.
04:26 I'm a small shear gal.
04:28 So you can see how that's got some nice texture in it,
04:33 and we're gonna play with that around the ear
04:35 in a little while, but just to give it some movement there.
04:39 And because of the undercut,
04:41 it's still going to blend in softly behind the ear.
04:45 So now I'm gonna do the other side.
04:47 I'm just gonna go in at about an inch and a half
04:56 and cut it.
04:58 - And for those just joining,
05:03 did you do any prep to her hair prior to the Facebook Live?
05:07 - She's been shampooed and conditioned,
05:10 and then as being the global artistic ambassador
05:14 for Pureology, I used a Pureology product
05:17 called Color Fanatic, which is a nice leave-in conditioner
05:21 that keeps color from fading
05:22 and a whole bunch of other great things.
05:25 But today, that's what I put in her hair when it was wet,
05:28 and then I just sectioned it off.
05:30 - And we get this question a lot, Ruth.
05:34 Do you have a preference
05:35 between dry cutting and wet cutting?
05:37 - I do both.
05:40 I know a lot of people do both as well.
05:43 I'm getting the basic thing in here first,
05:45 and then the top, I'm probably gonna cut it dry
05:48 because as you can see,
05:50 she has an existing haircut already
05:53 with some different lengths going on.
05:55 So I want to comb this section 100 times.
06:00 See how I'm combing it over and over?
06:03 And anyway, what was I saying?
06:05 - If you prefer dry cutting or wet cutting.
06:08 - Oh.
06:09 So I, both.
06:12 Get the basic shape in now,
06:14 and then you can see how the hair is going to live
06:17 when it's dry and cut more then.
06:20 A lot of the cutting that I do once it's dry
06:23 is more freehand, you know,
06:27 creating that texture in the hair
06:29 and working with whatever movement's going on,
06:33 and you can see exactly what you're gonna get.
06:35 Whereas, especially on lightened hair like this,
06:39 you can, when it's wet,
06:41 it behaves totally different than when it's dry.
06:44 The wet part, cutting it wet is great
06:46 for the precision part of it,
06:48 and then the freehand can be after.
06:51 So it's all about texture and shape.
06:55 Right now we're working on the shape,
06:57 and then the top will be about the texture.
07:01 You look so cute already.
07:04 - Thank you.
07:04 - And what's your vision for the finished look?
07:07 - The vision for this is working,
07:09 kind of like right now what I'm doing
07:13 is sort of like a little gamine or a crop shape underneath,
07:18 but we're gonna work with some disconnection.
07:20 The top is gonna have a lot more texture
07:22 and movement to it,
07:24 and then we're gonna go with a very short fringe
07:27 so that you end up with
07:28 a little softer, edgier type of a fringe
07:34 that's clear on her forehead,
07:36 and it has a different feel
07:38 than everything coming longer towards the front.
07:40 So thanks for that question.
07:43 Now what we're gonna do is go in,
07:45 now that this is a little bit more dry,
07:47 I'm gonna go in and start just opening this up
07:50 and lightening it up around the ears.
07:53 And what's nice about her hair
07:55 is that she can tuck it behind her ears,
07:58 and she's got, from before,
08:01 a little bit of a buzzed area, which is really fun.
08:05 So she can still move this around
08:07 at the length that it is now and do that.
08:09 So I'm just picking up a piece
08:12 with my thumb and my index finger
08:15 and just softening it out.
08:17 So if I tried to cut it this short first,
08:22 technically, by cutting it blunt,
08:25 these lengths would be sitting quite a bit shorter.
08:27 I mean, a lot more tight in here,
08:31 and then this length,
08:32 I'd have to angle out to get that length in there,
08:34 so this way, I'm cutting the length here
08:37 and then worrying about this afterwards.
08:40 So just letting that be soft around the ear.
08:43 And then I'm just gonna go in here
08:47 and just calm that flat, bring it out,
08:50 and take away the hair behind her ear.
08:55 I do wanna leave it long enough
08:58 that it's not opening up a big area back here.
09:03 (footsteps)
09:06 So now we'll do the same thing on this side.
09:08 I gotta go where you are.
09:14 Excusez-moi.
09:15 - Well, Trey, I'm following your lead.
09:17 - There we go.
09:18 I'm just gonna do the same thing right around her ear,
09:21 just softening it out.
09:23 (silence)
09:25 See that?
09:34 (laughs)
09:37 - All that coffee.
09:38 - It's adrenaline.
09:39 I'm excited.
09:40 It's so nice to see short hair, you know,
09:44 making a splash right now with, you know,
09:49 a lot of celebrities going shorter and, you know,
09:53 just people, models wearing shorter hair
09:56 because it's something that we've been into
09:58 for a really long time, but to get the mainstream there,
10:03 it always takes a little bit longer
10:04 for them to catch up, right?
10:06 So, and for me, I just, I always enjoy
10:11 leaving things a little bit more feminine.
10:14 I love the short, you know,
10:19 scissor over comb, short, tight.
10:20 I love all that stuff too, but I always end up
10:23 going back to like softer and a little bit more like PC
10:26 and like it just kinda happened
10:28 as opposed to being very on purpose.
10:31 So, let's see what's going on here.
10:34 - And for those just joining, we've got a couple questions
10:36 asking what shears you're using.
10:38 - Oh, okay, my shears are Hikari New Cosmos.
10:42 They're five and a half inches.
10:43 I've had 'em forever and they're little,
10:46 so it's part of my hand, really.
10:49 And when I use a big pair of shears,
10:50 I feel like I've got like a broom in my hand
10:53 and I feel really out of control, but that's just me.
10:56 I love watching other people use big shears,
10:58 but I'm kind of a klutz, so I like to keep my fingers
11:01 'cause I need them, you know?
11:03 So, let's just-- - Please keep your fingers.
11:06 Thomas says hi and he loves you.
11:07 - Hi, Thomas.
11:09 Mr. Stoops. - Yes.
11:12 - Yes.
11:12 All right, so you can see how she's got
11:15 that existing little weight there in the back.
11:19 And what I'm gonna do
11:20 is I'm gonna just dry this a little bit.
11:25 And I'm gonna just use the air from the dryer.
11:32 I gotta turn it on, don't I?
11:34 How can I talk to the blow dryer at the same time?
11:36 - You can't, we'll make it fast.
11:38 - Okay, ready?
11:39 (blow dryer whirring)
11:43 I just wanna see where this hair ends up.
11:46 And it does sit over the undercut a little bit,
11:52 so it's still got that softness to it
11:55 and I want it to stay that way.
11:56 I always think about when one of my friends
12:05 a long time ago said
12:06 that clients' ears are in the wrong place.
12:12 Oh wait, our ears are in the wrong place
12:15 because clients are talking here,
12:18 the blow dryer's in our ear.
12:19 If our ears were down here,
12:21 then we could hear what our clients are saying
12:24 and we wouldn't have to be pretending
12:26 that we're hearing what they're saying.
12:29 And saying, "Oh yeah, yeah,"
12:30 when it's something that's maybe
12:32 not something we should be saying that way.
12:36 (blow dryer whirring)
12:39 You can see how I'm just using my fingers
12:49 to set that in.
12:50 - And Amanda's asking if you could get the same result
12:56 with a razor cut or do you prefer the shears better?
13:00 - You could definitely use a razor
13:02 and get a very soft edge on your sections.
13:06 Which is pretty also.
13:08 But you can,
13:08 sometimes with the hair texture,
13:12 you might wanna go more with a shear
13:14 if it's compromised in any way.
13:16 And because her hair is on the fine side
13:19 and it's lightened quite a bit,
13:21 I wanted to keep it more blunt on the ends.
13:26 So a razor is gonna cut a really thin slice of the ends
13:29 and actually cut the individual hair itself on an angle.
13:35 Whereas this, even if we're working down this way,
13:37 we've got two blades that are closing in on the hair,
13:41 which is gonna give it more of a blunt end,
13:43 if that makes sense.
13:43 So we have a little bit more strength
13:48 we're building into the hair
13:49 when we're working with the shear.
13:51 - And we have a question about education.
13:54 Nicola's asking if you ever do cutting classes
13:56 in Iowa or the Midwest?
13:59 - Yeah, I can do classes anywhere.
14:01 I don't know where I'm going,
14:03 but I'm just gonna go over here for a minute.
14:04 - Okay. - I'll follow you.
14:05 - Well, I'm coming back.
14:06 - Okay. - I'm back.
14:07 Yes, if you go to,
14:14 actually ask your sales consultant.
14:18 We have classes that we do, shows that we do.
14:21 We're gonna be at ABS.
14:23 Most of the classes that I do are through Pureology.
14:26 So that's how you can find out more about
14:30 when we're gonna be there, but yes.
14:33 And I also have a YouTube channel
14:36 where I have a lot of educational videos on there,
14:39 which is, can I say it?
14:40 - Please do. - Which is Ruth Roach.
14:42 That's me, Ruth Roach TV.
14:45 So you can see things there.
14:47 They're quick because we have the attention span
14:49 of a fly as hairstylists.
14:52 So it's nice and quick to get there.
14:55 - And we have a couple people asking if you put product in
14:57 and if so, what did you use?
15:00 - What I have in her hair right now
15:02 is the Color Fanatic 21 Benefit Spray,
15:07 which is going to make it nice to comb through.
15:10 It's gonna smooth down the cuticle and all that stuff.
15:13 And then I put a little bit of air dry cream in her hair,
15:16 which is also from Pureology.
15:18 And that is just adding moisture to the hair,
15:23 but without any hold and without any stickiness
15:27 or anything like that.
15:28 It's made to air dry into the hair,
15:30 but I'm using it as almost like a cutting lotion
15:33 so that as it dries, I can see what's happening.
15:36 So you can see there,
15:38 and thank you for all the questions, by the way.
15:41 Okay, you can see there where we got our weight here
15:44 from the previous haircut, but it blends in visually
15:47 with what I just did on the sides.
15:49 So it has a different shape in that it's not, you know,
15:52 flat to the head back here, it's rounder,
15:55 and it has a little bit more of a weight line,
15:58 but it's very nondescript, very soft.
16:00 Okay, so now it's a matter of working
16:05 through the top section.
16:07 And this is where I'm going to cut the front area
16:13 to blend in with the sides first.
16:18 Just get that out of the way.
16:27 And because it's been clipped up, it's a little bit wonky.
16:30 Okay.
16:42 So what I'm gonna do is pick up just a little piece
16:48 of the side, and I'm gonna work my way across the front.
16:52 And you can see I'm going short.
16:55 (clicking)
16:57 Oh yeah, oh yeah.
17:01 That's gonna be fun.
17:02 So it's really gonna open up around her face here.
17:05 Coming around to the other side.
17:11 And just connecting it in, not disconnecting it,
17:16 but just connecting it in around the face.
17:23 Now what I'm gonna do is bring this forward.
17:25 Just start looking at how that's gonna live.
17:36 And I'm gonna bring it, and this time I'm gonna go in
17:39 and do some point cutting to the guide,
17:44 so some of it's a little bit longer than the guide.
17:52 And just connecting it into the side.
17:54 So I'm just changing my angle of my fingers a little bit
17:57 to work it into the side.
17:59 I'm so excited about this.
18:03 - I just wanna bring up a fun point,
18:06 'cause Michelle's giving you lots of love,
18:09 on the live that you guys consulted before the cut.
18:13 - We did. - And how important it is
18:15 for artists and stylists to collaborate with one another.
18:18 - Absolutely, I feel like, you know,
18:21 I'm a better hairdresser, like two heads are better than one
18:25 and I like getting that input from people.
18:28 And I have a few of my hair geek friends,
18:32 Michelle is one of them, and I have many,
18:36 but Michelle and I FaceTime to just talk about
18:40 what works for Erica's face and her hair texture
18:45 and everything else, and she's just really into being edgy.
18:50 So she doesn't mind, and that doesn't happen that often.
18:53 So sometimes when you have leeway to do whatever you want,
18:58 it's actually scarier, right?
19:00 - And Eric is asking, first he's saying hello from Chicago,
19:05 and he's asking if you only point cut in one direction.
19:09 - I do it all different directions
19:11 because I don't personally feel like it matters that much,
19:15 but that's just me.
19:18 Especially when you're working with a texture like this,
19:21 where it's really,
19:22 like that, right?
19:29 So by just going into it, it's fine.
19:32 If it was really thick hair,
19:34 oh, and then the other thing is,
19:36 if you go in and you're working into it,
19:40 I'm going in pretty much straight into the hair vertically.
19:43 If you go in at a diagonal like this in one direction,
19:46 then you are gonna get points or triangles
19:49 or Vs on the end of the hair.
19:51 This way, I'm doing more of a softer vertical texture,
19:55 so just pay attention to the angle of your shears
19:58 as you're going in.
19:59 - Virginia's sending her love from India.
20:04 She loves what you're doing, it's awesome.
20:06 - Hi, Virginia, that's really far away.
20:09 That's so cool.
20:10 Makes me feel really international.
20:14 - You are. - And yeah.
20:17 So, okay, so I'm just bringing this hair forward now.
20:21 And I think what I'm gonna go ahead and do
20:24 is just blow dry this top area
20:26 and start to see how everything is sitting,
20:28 because I do wanna leave some options
20:32 so that she can still wear it different ways
20:35 or tuck it over to the side.
20:37 So here we go.
20:38 You know, I'm gonna dry it,
20:42 but I'm gonna get it a little more wet before I dry it,
20:44 which absolutely makes no sense.
20:46 So, oh, I know what I was gonna do.
20:48 Get the parting out of here with a little bit of water.
20:51 How we doing on time?
20:56 - We're great. - Yeah.
20:58 - People are loving, you got a lot of love.
21:00 I see Gerard just joined us.
21:01 Hi, Gerard. - Gerard, what's up?
21:05 - Gerard says, "It looks great.
21:06 "Thanks for joining us, Ruth."
21:07 - Thanks for having me.
21:09 I love hair braids.
21:12 What would we do without it?
21:14 - The feeling is mutual.
21:15 - The geeks of the world, the hair geeks of the world,
21:18 need a place to go, man.
21:20 - We're here for you. - We have it.
21:22 - And real quick, before you blow dry,
21:23 Lee's asking if you would adjust your cutting
21:26 and how you would adjust it for thicker hair.
21:29 - For thicker hair, what I would do with the short stuff
21:33 that we just did underneath is I would leave it longer,
21:36 which makes no sense, logically.
21:38 But the longer lengths then would fall down
21:42 and weigh the hair down a little bit.
21:44 So especially if it's that thick hair
21:45 that likes to stand out from the head.
21:47 And then I would go in and do the technique
21:50 of carving through the surface
21:51 and taking a lot of the weight out,
21:53 but still leaving the lengths here to weigh itself down.
21:57 Hopefully that makes sense,
21:59 because you're using the fabric of the texture of the hair
22:04 to counteract your technique.
22:06 So if we went in and just cut it really short
22:08 and it sticks out, then we're stuck with that.
22:11 This way we leave it longer,
22:12 piece the weight in and go from there.
22:15 - And one more about hair, what about curly hair?
22:19 - Curly hair is a whole different animal, right?
22:21 Curly hair does not behave the same
22:26 as straight hair in any way.
22:28 And because it shrinks up so much,
22:31 we have to take that into consideration.
22:33 If they're gonna blow dry it straight,
22:34 then we would cut it just like this.
22:36 If they were going to wear it curly
22:38 and we wanted to do this kind of shape,
22:40 it's still not gonna look like this haircut, right?
22:42 It's gonna look like a totally different haircut.
22:45 We could, however, do this sectioning
22:48 and apply it to curly hair
22:50 and end up with sort of a little bit of a moppy thing,
22:53 but it is gonna have more volume.
22:55 If you want it closer to the head,
22:57 then you could cut bits out of it
22:58 or cut it a little bit shorter
23:00 so that it sits down and lays down.
23:02 So it just depends.
23:04 Curly hair for me is a lot of more freehand
23:07 and working with always trying to keep the ends blunt
23:10 and taking weight out to create more space
23:12 in between the curls.
23:13 So I hope that answered your question.
23:15 - Perfect, thank you.
23:16 - Okay, so I'm gonna go in with a big paddle brush
23:18 just for a minute.
23:19 (hair dryer whirring)
23:21 And just start smoothing the hair out.
23:24 A lot of times when, can you hear me?
23:28 - Not really. - Talk loud.
23:31 - Okay.
23:32 So a lot of times with our guests, our clients,
23:38 we are not cutting every single hair on the head.
23:43 It's kind of like a garden,
23:44 especially when a guest is growing their hair out
23:47 or they wear their hair short like this
23:48 and they wanna do something different.
23:50 Standby.
23:52 Be right back.
23:54 - Slight malfunction.
23:57 - Hello, dryer malfunction.
24:00 Anyway, it's like manicuring a garden
24:02 where this part needs to be cut,
24:04 but that part needs to keep growing.
24:06 So in her case, we had an existing shape
24:09 that we're working with,
24:10 and now we're working with her existing layers
24:12 that are already here.
24:13 So I wanna see how those lay
24:15 before I go in and do anything else.
24:17 So blow dry--
24:18 - In confirmation, people can hear you.
24:20 - Okay, so I can continue yelling.
24:23 I like that.
24:24 All right, so I'm gonna just keep going.
24:27 The reason I'm using a paddle brush
24:30 is just to smooth the hair because it's light.
24:34 I wanna get in so that I can get to that front
24:36 of the hair so the wide bristles are there.
24:40 Using my Suskie Tamzea paddle brush.
24:46 My buddy.
24:50 And it's just nice for covering a large surface area
24:55 at the same time.
24:56 Let's see what's happening.
24:59 What's happening?
25:00 Yeah, I don't mind that.
25:18 I like it all screwed up, too.
25:21 I know that's not a good pretty word,
25:24 but it's kind of fun just not flat to her head,
25:29 but it can be worn that way, too,
25:30 with a little bit of product in there
25:32 to get that to lay down.
25:33 I think it's so cool in the last,
25:45 you know, if you've been doing hair under 10 years,
25:49 you know, under, or excuse me,
25:50 this connection is a part of your everyday world.
25:53 And it's just such a great way to combine
25:56 different techniques and different looks in one shape
26:01 to create something that's absolutely unique
26:04 for your guests.
26:05 I feel like there's two reasons for education.
26:12 One is so that we as artists,
26:15 no, first, so that when our guests come in,
26:17 they say, "What's new?
26:18 "What's going on?"
26:19 We have something new or different or fun to offer them
26:23 that they don't have now.
26:25 And then there's the reason for us as artists
26:29 so that we are filling our own cup, you know,
26:34 and giving ourselves the freedom to be creative.
26:39 You know, especially when you're working
26:41 on your hair all day long,
26:43 it's nice to be able to have something up your sleeve,
26:48 you know, that makes your life more exciting.
26:51 You can see how just pushing that around in the front
26:54 is getting a nice little shape.
26:57 And leaving that in the back,
26:58 it has more of a rounder feel
27:01 when you tuck it behind the ears that way.
27:04 - Sarah, you can watch this video here on Facebook
27:13 as many times as you want after it goes live.
27:15 Sarah's asking if she can find this on your YouTube channel,
27:19 this type of cut.
27:21 - Not exactly like this because, you know,
27:23 it's unique to Erica and what she had.
27:28 Like, there's a point A and a point B, right?
27:31 And we're going for a certain point B today
27:34 and her point A was what it was today.
27:36 If she comes back in six weeks and she goes,
27:38 "Wow, I really loved it.
27:40 "You know, can you do that again?"
27:42 My point A is different, right, to get to the same point B.
27:46 So my haircuts are never quite exactly the same.
27:50 There are some short haircuts on there
27:52 and there will be more in the next couple of months.
27:56 But for right now--
27:57 - Exclusively here.
27:59 - It's exclusive to--
28:01 - And Andrea's asking if we could show the disconnection
28:04 at the nape of the neck for those that tuned in late.
28:06 That was done while you were blow drying.
28:09 - Yep, so just gonna take a little more weight out of here.
28:13 But let's look, here's what she had before.
28:16 And then what I did was I took this area here
28:23 and I cut it short.
28:24 Originally it was as long as this hair that's hanging over.
28:27 So I cut that shorter but not super short.
28:30 I left it sort of grown out looking.
28:32 And then left the weight area that she had back here
28:37 from her previous haircut.
28:38 Also from her previous haircut,
28:41 I see a little bit of extra weight right there.
28:44 So I'm just gonna go in.
28:45 And just lift a little bit of that weight off.
28:53 - And what would you recommend
28:58 as the upkeep for a cut like this?
29:01 - What I would do, if she was someone
29:04 that wanted to get the same haircut again,
29:07 is I would section it off the exact same way.
29:11 Do your, by then, this length would be
29:15 a half an inch longer, let's say.
29:17 So at that point you could go in
29:18 and cut it one finger's length all the way through
29:21 in your sections just below the nape
29:24 and then through the sides.
29:26 Go in and cut it an inch and a half, which is what I did.
29:29 And then it just falls in and kind of blends in
29:31 with that undercutting.
29:32 So you can see as it drops there,
29:35 how it's longer than that length underneath,
29:38 but it's still soft.
29:39 And then your, this part here in the horseshoe,
29:43 you could work with that and just do a nice long,
29:46 round layer through the top and then cut your fringe.
29:50 So if you do your round layer all the way through
29:53 and let this drop down, then this can be freehand
29:57 by just pinching the ends of the hair
30:00 and working your way down like this
30:02 to create a soft weight line through the back.
30:05 So that's how I would do it.
30:06 You know, there's probably many different ways
30:08 you could get there, but, and you might not have to do
30:11 as much texture in it, the second haircut,
30:14 maybe the third one, you go back in
30:15 and do a little more texture.
30:17 How's that? - Christina says hi.
30:19 She was so excited when she turned this on
30:22 and discovered it was you.
30:23 - Oh, thank you.
30:25 So I'm just going in and taking the ends
30:28 that are a little bit more in need of a friend.
30:32 And I'm just gonna go in.
30:36 And I am gonna do point cutting.
30:38 And we had, the question was before,
30:40 if I go into it this way, I'm gonna leave
30:42 a lot of those ends there.
30:43 Does that make sense?
30:44 So these ends are gonna go.
30:46 If I go in more at an angle like this,
30:49 as opposed to this, I'm going to take more
30:52 of those ends off.
30:53 So I'm putting more of a strong end in there,
30:56 but I'm still keeping that texture really soft.
30:59 Just gonna work my way around.
31:01 (scissors snipping)
31:04 There's my section.
31:07 I'm going in this way.
31:09 And you can see how that just gives it,
31:15 it just looks cleaner now.
31:16 It looks more polished on the ends.
31:20 Going in.
31:25 (scissors snipping)
31:28 And then right in this area of her hair,
31:37 it's thicker right in here, and it's mainly
31:40 because of the growth patterns pushing everything
31:42 to right here.
31:43 So what I'm gonna do is go in and take more weight
31:46 out of that section after I get the lengths done.
31:49 So just like most guests, there are different types
31:55 of hair textures on the same head sometimes
31:57 in different growth patterns.
31:59 So that's why when we choose a technique to work
32:03 in an area, it's not always something we're gonna do
32:06 everywhere on the head.
32:07 It might just be where we need it.
32:09 So see how that just lightened that up a little bit
32:12 through there?
32:13 Just by taking those ends off.
32:16 Now I don't wanna take away from my weight line
32:20 in the back, so I'm not gonna take this hair here
32:23 too short so that we keep, I guess it's not a weight line,
32:28 it's a blurred line of a weight line.
32:30 Now let's look in the front, see what's going on.
32:36 'Cause part of me wants to cut this short,
32:40 but I think I'm gonna leave it long so she has some options.
32:45 Should we take a vote?
32:47 How many people are watching?
32:48 Like five?
32:49 - No, you have over a thousand people tuned in right now.
32:52 - So, yeah, I was gonna say let's take a vote,
32:57 but I think I have to be a big girl
32:59 and make my own decisions.
33:01 But if anybody has an opinion.
33:02 - Taking all opinions.
33:05 - Yeah, so--
33:06 - Brittany says short, Andrea says long.
33:08 - See, I knew it, we're gonna get all these different ones.
33:11 So what's kinda cool is we can do short and long
33:14 by leaving this longer, but I think that it needs
33:18 to be broken up just a little bit.
33:22 So it doesn't look quite so stringy.
33:25 So that was the length of her previous haircut there,
33:32 where that fringe is.
33:33 Just taking that out.
33:38 - Everyone's loving the idea of leaving it with options.
33:45 - Options are good, especially if you have a hard time
33:47 with commitment.
33:49 - Yes.
33:51 - And a hard time styling your own hair.
33:53 (laughing)
33:54 - The struggle is real.
33:55 - And Erica's great, 'cause she, like I said,
34:02 she loves playing around with doing different things
34:06 with her hair, and also sometimes it's hard to,
34:09 if a client does have short hair, what do you do
34:13 to keep giving them something different?
34:15 So think about the sections that you can take
34:19 and making those more, you know,
34:24 sectioning out different areas of the head
34:27 and putting texture into other areas of the head.
34:30 So here's that area where it's dense, more dense,
34:34 so I'm just gonna go in and just carve pieces
34:38 through there so that that starts to move
34:42 a little bit more.
34:43 I do that a lot in my classes.
34:48 I take a vote, and then always half the class is like,
34:52 cut it long, cut it short, and it's, you know,
34:54 it's like, just make a decision, Ruth.
34:56 You know, I'm the one with the damn scissors, right?
34:59 So anyway, but I appreciate your input,
35:03 and we are gonna leave it with options.
35:05 So going in.
35:06 And this is just to take and lighten up
35:13 what's going on there.
35:18 'Cause again, if I go really short with this,
35:21 she is, she won't have as many options, right?
35:24 So just taking a little bit more out.
35:27 You can see that I'm going into it
35:29 the way that it's coming out towards the shears
35:31 as opposed to coming in this way.
35:33 So I keep it softer.
35:34 - And for those that are tuning in last minute,
35:40 can you let them know what type of shears you're using?
35:43 - These are Hikari New Cosmos.
35:48 They are, sorry, I just went into my hair spaceship.
35:52 You guys know what I'm talking about,
35:54 where you go into the spaceship and you're like,
35:56 what was I talking about?
35:58 Where am I?
35:59 Who are you?
36:00 Why are we here?
36:01 What's happening?
36:02 They are Hikari New Cosmos, and they're little.
36:05 I like little shears, just because that's
36:08 what I've always used, and I feel like
36:10 I can get into little places.
36:12 But that doesn't mean big shears are not a good thing.
36:16 So what I'm, did I answer the question?
36:21 - Yes, Chris said thank you.
36:23 - Okay, so what I'm doing here is just,
36:26 when you look at her from the front,
36:28 and I go like this, you can see how it's got
36:30 a little extra puff right there.
36:33 So what I'm doing is just taking,
36:35 and that's something I couldn't see when it's wet, right?
36:39 You can only see it when it's dry.
36:41 So now I'm gonna take those areas
36:43 and just take a lot of weight out of there
36:47 so that it sits a little bit closer to her head.
36:50 And again, just doing it in the areas where it needs it
36:53 and leaving that weight in the back.
36:55 And I'm working with my shears open,
37:01 so notice I'm not working with the tips of the blades.
37:03 I'm working closer to this area, holding the piece,
37:07 and then just barely moving the blades like this
37:11 to remove the length.
37:14 And that way you get a nice soft edge
37:15 'cause it's easy to all of a sudden have it be gone
37:18 if you're working with tips of the shears.
37:20 And you know what I'm saying,
37:21 you've seen it happen to people next to you.
37:24 Not you, of course.
37:25 - Right, never.
37:26 - Never.
37:27 So same thing here, if you look from the front,
37:30 we get a lot of weight right here,
37:31 so I'm just gonna go in and take a little bit of that out.
37:35 Here.
37:37 There we go.
37:40 - If you had to give this style a name,
37:42 what would you call it?
37:43 - Well, that's a good question.
37:45 Maybe we should put that out there.
37:47 - Next poll.
37:50 - Yeah, I was...
37:51 A word that I would use for it,
37:56 and it's not a word that everybody would use,
37:59 but it's sort of a French,
38:02 it's a French word, and it's called gamine,
38:05 which is working with the short, short hair,
38:09 but keeping it very soft,
38:11 and moving it, still having enough length
38:14 that it moves a little bit.
38:16 And so that's the concept of this,
38:19 is that it's soft, but it's really short.
38:22 So gamine, but a lot of people don't know what that means,
38:25 so I wouldn't call it that with a guess,
38:28 because they'd be like, "What?"
38:30 So I don't know.
38:32 Well, that was a terrible answer.
38:38 - Tracy says, "Offset texture bob."
38:40 - Exactly, it's an offset texture bob.
38:44 That's what I was thinking, you know?
38:46 But yeah, it's textured, it's disconnected,
38:49 it's soft, it's gamine,
38:54 it's got its weight line there in the back.
38:59 Just gonna...
39:08 - Leslie says, "Call it perfection."
39:10 - Oh, that's nice, I like that.
39:14 Let me just get the hair out of her hair.
39:16 And you can see how this is growing down,
39:31 this is pushing up, I don't care.
39:33 You know, that's what's making it kind of cool
39:36 and lived-in looking, so.
39:38 You know, and then if she wants to wear it more down
39:41 and have it looking longer in the front
39:42 and tucked back behind the ears,
39:45 it gets a little more of that pixie feel,
39:47 which is cute too.
39:49 So I'm gonna put a little bit more product in it.
39:52 I'm gonna use, this is a matte wax, it's not very strong.
39:57 Just gonna take a small amount,
39:59 it's a Pureology product called Density Definer,
40:02 and a little bit of that, and then a little bit of,
40:05 this is a shine serum that comes out like a cream,
40:09 cuticle polisher, and I'm just gonna
40:11 work the two together in my hands.
40:13 So it's got a little bit of hold,
40:15 but it's got a little bit more shine to it.
40:17 Really working it together,
40:22 and then I'm just gonna place it.
40:24 (pillow rustling)
40:27 It's a pixie that grew legs and ran away.
40:41 (pillow rustling)
40:50 (laughing)
40:52 Okay, let's see, no mirror,
40:57 so I have to walk around in a circle.
40:59 Now it's deciding when to stop.
41:13 - Should we have her take a spin with the cape off?
41:16 - Yeah.
41:18 (laughing)
41:20 Yeah, okay, I'm gonna have you,
41:22 yeah, you know how to do it.
41:24 Take that off.
41:25 Here we have, you do the little spin, spin.
41:30 Perfect.
41:31 I have to touch it as she goes by.
41:35 - And Ruth, before we sign off,
41:38 where can everybody find you online?
41:39 - My Instagram is Ruth Roach, R-O-C-H-E,
41:44 and I have Ruth Roach TV on YouTube,
41:47 and I also have a website,
41:49 which is called ruthroach.com.
41:51 So it's all about me, and that's why I named him that.
41:54 - Perfect, thank you guys so much for tuning in.
41:58 This video will live forever here
42:00 on Hairbrains' Facebook page,
42:02 and we'll see you guys next time.
42:04 - Bye. - Bye-bye.
42:05 Thanks so much for joining us.
