The Reason I Ran Away (Spoken Poem with Music)
Lyrics:
The Reason I Ran Away
They told me always be proud of where you are from
And that family is what’s most important
They told me always be proud of where you come from
But there was an obvious reason that I ran away
There’s a long-winded preacher at the pulpit unfolding his art
He has everything sorted on a single chart
The crowd jeered when he forgot the names
Of the bride and groom in the front
And he’d brought his easel and paints as a stunt
He passed around the plate to collect everyone’s blames
They told me always be proud of where you are from
And that family is what’s most important
They told me always be proud of where you come from
But there was an obvious reason that I ran away
The bride bothered to set up the microphone
At first everyone there began to groan
But when she began to sing all of her vows
Her frustration turned into ugly tears
As the audience laughed at the worst performance in years
She wondered if her husband was worth plucking her eyebrows
They told me always be proud of where you are from
And that family is what’s most important
They told me always be proud of where you come from
But there was an obvious reason that I ran away
He kept the car of the future at my home
Under the carport flaked off the chrome
Every twenty years he’d come to see if it would start
I saw him slinging hooks into the eyes of fish
He said he had to go back to work on Tuesday
He didn’t know what day it was to collect his pay
His back always hurt from when he tried to fix the dish
They told me always be proud of where you are from
And that family is what’s most important
They told me always be proud of where you come from
But there was an obvious reason that I ran away
When I showed up I was asked if I packed my bed
I couldn’t remember and felt the dread
As the truck pulled in driven by two girls
Who now didn’t have a ride and mocked
My embarrassing choice of headgear and was shocked
That there was a magnet at the gift shop representing their earls
They told me always be proud of where you are from
And that family is what’s most important
They told me always be proud of where you come from
But there was an obvious reason that I ran away
The Reason I Ran Away
They told me always be proud of where you are from
And that family is what’s most important
They told me always be proud of where you come from
But there was an obvious reason that I ran away
