00:00:00Food is the only thing I have left to look forward to.
00:00:11I can feel my body breaking down.
00:00:13Oh God!
00:00:15I have to change.
00:00:22These surgeries represent freedom.
00:00:25I'm risking everything for a chance to have a future.
00:00:30I have a lot of lost time to make up for.
00:00:39I can breathe so much better now.
00:00:42I never would have believed I'd be capable of this.
00:00:45Hold it right here.
00:00:49We have a serious situation with Carrie.
00:00:52He's got on his knees.
00:00:54This is awesome.
00:00:56Okay.
00:00:57I never thought I would be 750 pounds.
00:01:13Even getting out of bed is hard.
00:01:19The second I'm up, I'm already in pain.
00:01:22The only thing that helps me with the pain is food.
00:01:26Food makes me happy.
00:01:28And the thought of being able to eat is what motivates me.
00:01:33Are you hungry?
00:01:34Yeah.
00:01:35Want me to make you an omelet?
00:01:37Yeah.
00:01:38Maybe some ham.
00:01:39Some toast.
00:01:40Maybe some juice.
00:01:41Yeah, I got a word of juice.
00:01:42I love ya.
00:01:44My son is the size of three men, but he only has one heart.
00:01:50I'm always worried about him.
00:01:52He's just gotten so extremely large that it's out of hand.
00:01:57I feel like there's an empty space there when there's not food.
00:02:02And all I do is eat.
00:02:03Because food takes everything back and makes it go away.
00:02:09But the one bright spot in my life is my girlfriend, Channy.
00:02:15Hey, hey.
00:02:16Hey.
00:02:17Hi.
00:02:18Oh, this is good.
00:02:19Hi, babe.
00:02:20What are you?
00:02:21I got hamburgers.
00:02:23Hi, babe.
00:02:24And potatoes and appetizers.
00:02:27I'm hoping we can get married and maybe even have some kids together someday.
00:02:33What's up?
00:02:34She has a son, too.
00:02:36And it makes me so sad that I can't play sports with my girlfriend's son.
00:02:41And I want to change all that.
00:02:43Thanks, bud.
00:02:44But I can't do it alone.
00:02:47I'll do it.
00:03:00Go ahead and step on the scale.
00:03:03I was 7-44 about four months ago.
00:03:09So I'm hoping I'm still in the 7-40 range.
00:03:147-57.
00:03:15Oh, son.
00:03:16Got to do something about it.
00:03:17Yeah.
00:03:18So, Paul, you're over 750.
00:03:19So who is enabling you?
00:03:20Probably me.
00:03:21And I'm very, very sorry because I was a big woman myself.
00:03:23So how did you lose your weight?
00:03:24Chicken, very little starches and, you know, lots of vegetables and no sweets.
00:03:31Well, you're doing that for yourself, but you're not doing that for Paul.
00:03:35This is the dynamic.
00:03:36We need to change.
00:03:37But Paul, you come down to Houston.
00:03:38Who's going to be with you?
00:03:39I wanted my girlfriend to come, but I don't think she's able to make it.
00:03:40You're going to need somebody to help you out.
00:03:41If you want to do the program, you're going to have to figure that out.
00:03:42Yes, sir.
00:03:43Yes, sir.
00:04:06My mom did what Dr. Now said and threw out all the bad stuff in the house.
00:04:19And I'm making meals with only approved ingredients because I'm determined to get to my goal.
00:04:24Chuckie, you guys are doing stuff like that.
00:04:26It has to be high protein.
00:04:27Chuckie's high protein.
00:04:29All protein.
00:04:30No.
00:04:31Yeah, it is.
00:04:32Diamonds.
00:04:33No, I can't.
00:04:34I can't have no fruit.
00:04:35I'm not supposed to have because of my diabetic.
00:04:37I didn't know because you're fat.
00:04:39Yeah.
00:04:40I know everything depends on me losing weight.
00:04:43So no matter what it takes, I'm going to figure this out.
00:04:48Hey, Butch.
00:04:49Whoa.
00:04:50What's up, man?
00:04:51What's up, man?
00:04:52What's up, buddy?
00:04:53What's up?
00:04:54Carnival work is what I know.
00:04:56And this is where I work for my whole adult life.
00:04:59You're losing a little weight there, aren't you?
00:05:00Yeah, a little bit.
00:05:01A little bit.
00:05:02Yeah.
00:05:03I realized I needed to save up some money and planned my move to Houston.
00:05:06So I called the guys and asked them if I could jump back in.
00:05:10And they told me it was going to be no problem.
00:05:14Hey!
00:05:18So I'm just hoping next week when I go back and see Dr. Now that my weight loss is enough to get approved for weight loss surgery.
00:05:33Mr. McNeil?
00:05:34I'm back in Houston again for another appointment with Dr. Now.
00:05:43But I've worked extremely hard to hopefully qualify for weight loss surgery.
00:05:48Two months ago, I made it down to 695.
00:05:51Dr. Now gave me another weight loss goal to lose 50 pounds by the day.
00:06:01So if I made it, I'll be down to 645 today.
00:06:04Your weight is 641.
00:06:05Yes.
00:06:06I'm proud of you for all your hard work.
00:06:07So I'm going to pre-heal for weight loss surgery.
00:06:08And I'll do that as soon as you move down here to Houston.
00:06:09I'm so excited.
00:06:10I'm going to move down to Houston as soon as I can.
00:06:11I'm excited because this means I have a chance to have what I want, which is a future with Jen.
00:06:32I flew back home yesterday.
00:06:34I wanted to do something special to tell Jen I got approved.
00:06:37And I'm moving to Houston.
00:06:40We won't be able to see each other often.
00:06:42And that's going to be really hard for me.
00:06:44Where are we going?
00:06:45It's a surprise.
00:06:47She loves the beach.
00:06:49It's one of her favorite places.
00:06:51But I've never been able to go with her.
00:06:53It's impossible at my size to walk on scene.
00:06:56Right now, I'm not able to walk on this beach.
00:06:59I want to make this promise that we can walk on this beach together and be happy for the rest of our lives.
00:07:06I know you can do this.
00:07:08I love you.
00:07:09I love you.
00:07:10I love you.
00:07:11Since I got approved for weight loss surgery, I was supposed to move to Houston within three months.
00:07:16So right now, I'm working so I can save enough money so I can make that move to Houston.
00:07:21But it's taken me a little longer to save up all the money I'll need.
00:07:24Yeah, buddy.
00:07:25Just pull it and sit that out and I'll let it down.
00:07:27I got it.
00:07:28I got it.
00:07:29I got it.
00:07:30So I asked Dr. Now for another month.
00:07:32And he said that was fine, as long as I stay on track and keep losing at least 15 pounds a month.
00:07:37I have no doubt that I have enough saved up by next month.
00:07:42I feel accomplished that I can work now and I couldn't do it five months ago.
00:07:45It's not easy, but I can move around more instead of standing up.
00:07:47I can't do it right now.
00:07:48I can't do it right now.
00:07:49I got it.
00:07:50I got it.
00:07:51I got it.
00:07:52Yeah, buddy.
00:07:53Pull it and sit that out and I'll let it down.
00:07:55I got it.
00:07:56I got it.
00:07:57I got it.
00:07:58I got it.
00:07:5915 pounds a month.
00:08:00I have no doubt that I have enough saved up by next month.
00:08:07I feel accomplished that I can work now
00:08:09and I couldn't do it five months ago.
00:08:12It's not easy, but I can move around more.
00:08:14Instead of standing there for five minutes,
00:08:15I can stand there for 45 minutes, you know?
00:08:18It's amazing to have a job
00:08:20and be able to interact with people.
00:08:22Here we go, boss.
00:08:24How about you?
00:08:25Right behind the red line.
00:08:29One more time, one more time, one more time.
00:08:31But my main motivation has been gin and Riley,
00:08:34and to keep the promise, I made the gin at the beach.
00:08:36So the only option I have
00:08:38is to make sure I get weight loss surgery.
00:08:41The carnival is a temptation.
00:08:44A lot of bad food.
00:08:45Everything's fried, everything's sweet, you know?
00:08:47Do I want that funnel cake?
00:08:48Yeah, I want that funnel cake.
00:08:50But I mean, it's not the right thing for me.
00:08:52It's not my diet plan.
00:08:54So you have to go for what's the best, you know?
00:08:56So a bottle of water and a pickle,
00:08:59it'll hold me over till dinner time,
00:09:01and then I'll eat some chicken when I get home, or a salad.
00:09:04So it'll be good.
00:09:05Keep the bad doctors away, you know?
00:09:08Two hits, you got two hits.
00:09:10Come on, Calgary, you got it.
00:09:11Hey!
00:09:12Hey!
00:09:20Paul making us a chicken?
00:09:23We all get chicken.
00:09:27All right.
00:09:28Put that seasoning on it.
00:09:29That'd be good.
00:09:30Yeah, I will.
00:09:32You know, Paul, I've been doing a lot of thinking
00:09:37about this surgery.
00:09:38Oh, yeah?
00:09:39And I know I got to put it in God's hands,
00:09:42but I'm worrying about it.
00:09:44Yeah.
00:09:45Me too.
00:09:46I don't want anything to happen to you.
00:09:49Me either, Mom.
00:09:49Me either.
00:09:51Just trying to stay focused, be on the positive side,
00:09:55you know?
00:09:57Proud of you, though.
00:09:58You've been doing good.
00:09:59Thanks, Mom.
00:10:01Is that mine?
00:10:01That is yours.
00:10:03I'll grab you.
00:10:05Yay!
00:10:07I know that I'm losing weight, and I'm excited
00:10:10to find out how much soon.
00:10:12I don't know.
00:10:12You're not going to be able to eat very much, are you?
00:10:15I'd say about four ounces.
00:10:17At least the grocery store would be cheap.
00:10:19Well, I'll just be able to eat one pack of chicken
00:10:22all week, you know?
00:10:24That ain't how we eat, is it, son?
00:10:28No.
00:10:29Thanks, Mom.
00:10:30I'm sorry.
00:10:32No matter what, I'm determined to get there,
00:10:34and do whatever it takes so I can marry Jen,
00:10:37and have the family and life that I want.
00:10:52Every morning, reality just comes crashing down on me.
00:10:57I think to myself, this is not the life I want to die.
00:11:01Because I have this massive weight that's weighing my body down.
00:11:05Trying to get a shower this morning.
00:11:07Can you get everything ready?
00:11:08Sure.
00:11:08And I'm ashamed that I have to have my husband, Chris,
00:11:11help me get up.
00:11:12Christopher does everything for me.
00:11:14It's humiliating.
00:11:16Having your spouse have to give you a bath,
00:11:19the whole thing is torture.
00:11:21Come on, come help.
00:11:22I see her health diminishing, not being able to walk as much.
00:11:31I had to start helping her do a lot more.
00:11:34And I actually think she likes food too much.
00:11:37Something does need to change.
00:11:39OK, if you need me, call me.
00:11:41OK.
00:11:42I'm the receptionist at a doctor's office.
00:11:45And I'm only able to do that because I can sit most of the day.
00:11:49Hi.
00:11:49Good morning.
00:11:50Good morning.
00:11:51I'm going to do my regular.
00:11:52And I want that extra chocolate drizzle.
00:11:56Marino?
00:11:56But my weight's out of control now.
00:11:58And my body's getting to a breaking point.
00:12:02It is so hard for me to stop eating.
00:12:04Because food is what makes the world a better place for me.
00:12:13Everything's riding on this appointment.
00:12:15So for me, it's just impossible not to be scared
00:12:17about what's going to happen.
00:12:21Carrie?
00:12:26Hopefully, my weight's around 600 and not any higher.
00:12:31But I've been avoiding the scale for a while,
00:12:34because I don't want to see how hard the number is now.
00:12:36You know, right now, in resting, your heart rate is like 120.
00:12:53It should be 80.
00:12:55So you need to lose some weight really quick.
00:12:57So what seems to be a challenge with your eating habit?
00:13:01You just can't stop eating or what?
00:13:03Yeah, it's hard.
00:13:04Do you think you can make the changes on your eating habit?
00:13:07Yes.
00:13:08I'm ready.
00:13:09OK.
00:13:15There's only two pieces of chicken.
00:13:16Do you want me to cook another box?
00:13:18No.
00:13:19What y'all cooking?
00:13:20The broccoli cheddar cheese stuffed chicken.
00:13:23We've been trying to make the adjustments
00:13:24to eating healthy as a family.
00:13:27I don't think it'll be bad.
00:13:29Definitely will be healthier for all of us.
00:13:32Are you nervous about the appointment?
00:13:34I'm not nervous.
00:13:36The only hard times I've had are pizza.
00:13:41Yeah.
00:13:48So what brings you down?
00:13:49How did you get in touch with Dr. Now?
00:13:51My family wanted me to reach out to him.
00:13:55Your family did?
00:13:56Mm-hmm.
00:13:56Not you?
00:13:57Well, my father died as a result of the surgery.
00:13:59Oh, wow.
00:14:00OK.
00:14:00So I had some reluctance there.
00:14:03So you're probably scared of the surgery?
00:14:05A little.
00:14:05OK.
00:14:06Is he on board with this?
00:14:08He's sometimes too supportive.
00:14:10Chris has a problem telling me no.
00:14:12You need to learn to say no to her,
00:14:14and you learn to accept that.
00:14:16It'll make a huge difference.
00:14:19It's five ounces of salmon.
00:14:21Steamed, mixed veggies, and a fourth a cup of quinoa.
00:14:28What would you like to drink?
00:14:29I think I'd just like an ice water.
00:14:32OK.
00:14:34Making these changes is a big adjustment, though.
00:14:37So it's going to just take some time, I think,
00:14:39for us to get to where Chris can tell me no, like I need.
00:14:51Well, I worked hard to lose as much as I can.
00:14:54And I'm really hoping I made it, and it's finally enough.
00:14:57Because if it's not, then I know I'm done with the program.
00:15:01And I'll have lost the only option I have left to get help
00:15:05and save my life.
00:15:10Whoo.
00:15:11Excited.
00:15:12Good job.
00:15:14I know, right?
00:15:15So proud of you.
00:15:16Thanks, babe.
00:15:18OK, because you made good progress,
00:15:20I'm going to go ahead and prove you for weight loss surgery.
00:15:23All right.
00:15:23That's fantastic.
00:15:25Once you use 20 pounds by then, OK?
00:15:28Yes, sir.
00:15:28If you come back in a month, you haven't lost 20 pounds,
00:15:31then we're going to get a cancer surgery, OK?
00:15:33I understand.
00:15:34Today, we are attempting to perform
00:15:36a gastric sleeve on carry.
00:15:39She's showing me she's still working hard
00:15:41to turn her life around.
00:15:43So we are moving ahead with her today.
00:15:46We can turn the room light off.
00:15:48This operation limits the amount of food
00:15:50that the patient can eat at one time,
00:15:53and also changes the patient's metabolism
00:15:55so they feel less hungry.
00:15:57OK, can you turn the room light on?
00:16:01Let's close it up.
00:16:05The surgery went very well.
00:16:07And we were able to complete the operation
00:16:10without any complication.
00:16:11But she needs to continue to work on her emotional issues
00:16:14that are behind her drive to eat
00:16:16before she does anything to undo the surgery.
00:16:20And I'm going to tell you,
00:16:22I'm going to tell you,
00:16:23I'm going to tell you,
00:16:24I'm going to tell you,
00:16:24I'm going to tell you,
00:16:25how's your broth?
00:16:30It's been a couple of weeks since my surgery,
00:16:32and the liquid diet is certainly a big adjustment.
00:16:37How's your burger?
00:16:38It's good.
00:16:40How is it?
00:16:43It's broth.
00:16:44To be honest, I miss my food,
00:16:47and the liquid diet is rough.
00:16:50I think there's like a little trail up here.
00:16:54I had my one-month post-op appointment with Dr. Nell,
00:16:57and I was down to 457.
00:16:59But Dr. Nell said my weight loss,
00:17:01which was an 18-pound weight loss,
00:17:03wasn't where it needed to be.
00:17:05He told me I either needed to buckle down
00:17:07and do what I needed,
00:17:08or I could start going back in the wrong direction.
00:17:11I'm so glad we're able to do this.
00:17:13Me too.
00:17:14Maybe next time we come, I'll be able to run.
00:17:21I really actually suck at this game.
00:17:23Sometimes I get impatient
00:17:25and wish that I was further ahead than I am.
00:17:28Yes!
00:17:30Game point.
00:17:31Game.
00:17:31I win.
00:17:32But I know that if I can just stay on track,
00:17:35the future that I want is there for the taking.
00:17:37Good game, even though you lost.
00:17:39Good game.
00:17:41Hey, girl!
00:17:42Hey!
00:17:43How's your day?
00:17:44Whew!
00:17:45Long.
00:17:46Long.
00:17:47Been the longest year of work so far.
00:17:48Good month, but never in.
00:17:49How about you?
00:17:50How was school?
00:17:51You know high school kids, they think they're grown.
00:17:52Yeah, you're grown.
00:17:53How was your birthday?
00:17:54It was amazing.
00:17:55The concert was great.
00:17:56We floated the river.
00:17:57It was hard not having you there.
00:17:58It's just as hard for me.
00:17:59It's just as hard for me.
00:18:00It was amazing.
00:18:01It was amazing.
00:18:02It was amazing.
00:18:03The concert was great.
00:18:04We floated the river.
00:18:05It was hard not having you there.
00:18:06It was hard not having you there.
00:18:07It's just as hard for me.
00:18:10It's just as hard for me to tell you guys no for the things that I've always been there
00:18:14for.
00:18:15I just, I don't have the stamina.
00:18:17The next birthday you're gonna come flood the river?
00:18:19Next birthday.
00:18:20So what's been going on with you?
00:18:23Finally got my dress taken in twice.
00:18:25Mm-hmm.
00:18:26That was good.
00:18:27I mean you were exercising and you were dieting and you lost all that weight.
00:18:29But the emotional eating's hard.
00:18:30It's so easy to fall back in that pattern.
00:18:32And I think I've taken a good first step.
00:18:34Mm-hmm.
00:18:35And you've taken an amazing step.
00:18:36And I know I can do better.
00:18:37I want to be able to celebrate our 40th birthdays together.
00:18:41I want to.
00:18:42Yep.
00:18:43And Chris and I were just talking about it the other day.
00:18:45I mean, it's been 30 years.
00:18:48We've been around each other for 30 years.
00:18:4930 years.
00:18:50Since second grade we've been doing this.
00:18:52Yeah.
00:18:53Seven years old.
00:18:54Y'all are really old.
00:18:55Man, I feel old right now.
00:18:56You need to watch your mouth.
00:18:57That's what you never do.
00:18:58Dr. Now says I should be losing about 15 pounds a month now.
00:19:03And he warned me about snacking and grazing.
00:19:07But it's just hard to say no sometimes.
00:19:10Are you ready?
00:19:11You ready to head out?
00:19:12Okay.
00:19:13All right.
00:19:14We love you.
00:19:15Thanks for stopping by.
00:19:16Appreciate you.
00:19:17I'm still working hard.
00:19:19And I'm feeling better.
00:19:21So now I'm always here for you.
00:19:23So I'm just really focused on the path I need to have a life.
00:19:27And that's all I'm going to be able to handle.
00:19:48Today I'm heading out to Houston.
00:19:52But right now I'm going to see my girlfriend and tell her goodbye.
00:19:56Saying goodbye is going to be pretty hard because I don't want to leave her.
00:20:02But, you know, it's something that has to be done.
00:20:05So that I can have a better future with Jen and Riley.
00:20:09I'm supposed to stay for a year.
00:20:12But I want to be able to lose the weight and finish Dr. Now's program in eight months.
00:20:17And then I can come back and keep my promise to Jen.
00:20:23And ask her to marry me.
00:20:31Hi, babe.
00:20:36How are you?
00:20:37Damn, it's hot.
00:20:42You going to miss Florida?
00:20:44I'm going to miss you.
00:20:46I'll miss you too.
00:20:48This is going to be hard.
00:20:51You know?
00:20:52I'm leaving you.
00:20:54And I know you can't come with me.
00:20:58So you should work.
00:21:00But it's...
00:21:01I'm going to miss you now.
00:21:04You know?
00:21:05We were talking on the phone.
00:21:06And that's good.
00:21:07That's why I was wanting to know if you were going to come out and see me.
00:21:20I want you to be there for the surgery.
00:21:25If you can.
00:21:26You know?
00:21:27You can't.
00:21:28I know stuff happens.
00:21:32I'm going to come out for the surgery for sure.
00:21:35I just need to know when as soon as possible so I can let the companies know.
00:21:41I got to get out there and talk to the doctor now.
00:21:43He needs to be the one giving me the answers.
00:21:46Got me when, where, how, how to jump high.
00:21:50Do my back strokes and all that stuff, you know?
00:21:54I'm going to become a stripper by the end of the time, you know?
00:21:57Do a little chip and dough.
00:21:59What?
00:22:00Yeah?
00:22:01I got dollar bills.
00:22:03You got dollar bills?
00:22:04I got dollar bills.
00:22:05I'm down.
00:22:06You're so corny sometimes.
00:22:09Are my eyes red?
00:22:13You're watery too.
00:22:15No crying.
00:22:18No crying.
00:22:19Okay.
00:22:20No crying.
00:22:21I'm going to miss him a lot.
00:22:25It's going to be weird not having you here every day.
00:22:31Yes, it made me very happy that he stopped to say goodbye before heading out.
00:22:40It's nice that I get to see him because I don't know when I'm going to be able to see him again.
00:22:47He's become part of my everyday thing and for him not to be here or me to be able to talk to him whenever I want to is going to be pretty difficult.
00:23:03Turn everything on.
00:23:04Ready?
00:23:05Yeah.
00:23:06I hope to be able to get out there and see him as much as I can but I just can't take all that time off.
00:23:12I love you.
00:23:13I love you.
00:23:14I love you.
00:23:15I love you.
00:23:16I love you.
00:23:17I love you.
00:23:18I love you.
00:23:19I love you.
00:23:20I love you.
00:23:21Jenna has two jobs.
00:23:26She can't just get up and leave.
00:23:27There's bills to be paid.
00:23:28You know she has a son.
00:23:29Drive safe.
00:23:30That's where I have to understand.
00:23:31I'll call you when I stop.
00:23:32Okay.
00:23:33She has my back and I have her back.
00:23:34And we just have to.
00:23:35And we just have to.
00:23:36I'll call you when I stop.
00:23:37I'll call you when I stop.
00:23:38I'll call you when I stop.
00:23:39Okay.
00:23:40She has my back and I have her back and we just have to be strong phone buddies you know.
00:23:45Love you.
00:23:46Love you too babe.
00:23:48A son.
00:23:50Drive safe.
00:23:52That's where I have to understand.
00:23:55I'll call you when I stop.
00:23:57Okay.
00:23:59She has my back, and I have her back,
00:24:02and we just have to be strong for our buddies, you know?
00:24:08Love you.
00:24:10Love you, too, babe.
00:24:12But it's not an easy thing.
00:24:16Being alone is...
00:24:19It's scary, you know?
00:24:23I'm leaving, and I have nobody out there.
00:24:29But it's a journey if I have to be by myself or not.
00:24:33It's what has to be done.
00:24:36I'm giving myself a few days to make it to Houston.
00:24:47It's a long trip, and I know that I can handle a lot better now than I did before.
00:24:53With all my progress, I can actually enjoy the trip this time.
00:25:08I plan to stop for places on the way and see a bit of the world.
00:25:12And I'm excited about that.
00:25:19I just know that I can't take too long,
00:25:33because I have my appointment with Dr. Now in five days.
00:25:37So I need to get there in enough time to move in and make it to that.
00:25:42I got, like, ten more miles, and I'll be out of Florida.
00:26:01So saying goodbye to him.
00:26:06Like looking at the water and eating some lunch.
00:26:08What I need to do is exercise.
00:26:35So, I mean, if I can walk the pier and walk back to my truck,
00:26:39I mean, I've done a pretty good exercise for the day.
00:26:47If I don't exercise, then I don't sleep better, you know?
00:26:52It makes me happy to feel like my life is not just passing me by anymore.
00:27:12But I know I have a lot of work left to get where I need to go.
00:27:15That next one's Melbourne.
00:27:24My appointment is in a couple days, and I'm really hoping I'm on track.
00:27:40And that doctor now will give me the go-ahead.
00:27:44If he doesn't, it might mean that I can't keep my promise to Jim.
00:27:49And then I don't know what I'm going to do.
00:27:51I hope that I did my job and my duty.
00:28:01I get on the scale, and it's more than 100 pounds.
00:28:06I might do a happy dance, you know?
00:28:10I might scream.
00:28:11I don't know.
00:28:12And if I came here for no reason, then I shouldn't be here.
00:28:26I didn't move here for no reason.
00:28:42I'm just really hoping that when I get on the scale, it shows that I am where I should be.
00:28:54For doctor now to move ahead with my weight loss surgery.
00:29:00If I don't get a proof, it's going to be a really hard blow for me.
00:29:04Because I've done so much to get to this point.
00:29:07All right.
00:29:32Paul?
00:29:33Last time I saw a doctor now, he told me I needed to lose 15 pounds a month.
00:29:41So it's been four months since then, and I don't know if I've lost as much as 60 pounds.
00:29:47But I'm really hoping I did somehow.
00:29:49You can get on the scale now so we can weigh you, okay?
00:29:52Because this time I gave it my all.
00:29:54So today's weighing is my last hope.
00:30:03I'm back at Dr. Now's, and I'm about to find out where my progress is at.
00:30:21I was 641 at my last appointment four months ago.
00:30:25And if I've lost at least 15 pounds a month, like Dr. Now said, I'll be down to 581.
00:30:31You can step down.
00:30:36We're going to be going to room five.
00:30:42I'm not sure how to react to that number.
00:30:47I'm glad to be under 600, finally, and to have an almost 50-pound weight loss this time.
00:30:54But I don't know if this weight means that I'm going to lose my approval for surgery.
00:31:01So I'm just really nervous about how Dr. Now is going to react and what it's going to say.
00:31:08Hello.
00:31:09Hey, Dr. Now.
00:31:10How you doing?
00:31:11Good.
00:31:12How are you, sir?
00:31:13I'm doing fine.
00:31:15So you lost 164 pounds so far?
00:31:16Yes, sir.
00:31:17So how are you feeling losing all that weight?
00:31:18I feel a lot better.
00:31:19I can move around more.
00:31:20Okay.
00:31:21I can walk more.
00:31:22Okay.
00:31:23How's that cellulitis doing?
00:31:24I haven't had a flare-up.
00:31:25So, I mean, I feel like I'm trying to take care of it as much as I can.
00:31:29Okay.
00:31:30So how's your breathing?
00:31:31Are you short of wet when you walk?
00:31:33No.
00:31:34Not now.
00:31:35I feel a lot better.
00:31:37I can move around more.
00:31:39I can walk more.
00:31:41Okay, how's that cellulitis doing?
00:31:43I haven't had a flare-up, so I feel like I'm trying to take care of it as much as I can.
00:31:50Okay, so how's your breathing?
00:31:53Are you short of breath when you walk?
00:31:56No, not now.
00:31:58I mean, when I first started, I was winded all the time.
00:32:01But if I over-exert myself, then I'm short of breath, you know?
00:32:10But right now, I've been working.
00:32:13Much better than you were before, huh?
00:32:16Yeah.
00:32:17When you see me, you know, last time, I was hurting.
00:32:23Yeah, I'm very uncomfortable.
00:32:26Where do you live now?
00:32:28I actually moved to Houston.
00:32:30Okay.
00:32:31I'm here by myself.
00:32:33But when the surgery's happening, my mom's gonna take off for a month, the first month after the surgery.
00:32:39So she can be here for my recovery, help me recover.
00:32:44Okay.
00:32:45So what changes you have made in your eating habit?
00:32:48I mean, everything.
00:32:51I don't eat sweets.
00:32:52I eat three times a day.
00:32:54I try to keep fluid in my system.
00:32:57I mean, as you told me last time, I needed to stick to the diet.
00:33:01And I'm just trying to motivate myself to do the next, you know, next thing, you know?
00:33:11The surgery.
00:33:12Okay.
00:33:13Okay.
00:33:14Well, since you are sticking with your diet and you are eating healthy, then we're gonna prove you for weight loss surgery.
00:33:21Yeah.
00:33:22So we'll set you up for some tests on you.
00:33:24And if everything looks good, then we'll proceed with weight loss surgery.
00:33:28Okay?
00:33:29Yes, sir. Thank you.
00:33:30All right, Paul.
00:33:31You're doing good.
00:33:32Keep it up.
00:33:34All right.
00:33:35All right.
00:33:36All right.
00:33:37All right.
00:33:38I'm excited.
00:33:39Dr. Nair is moving me ahead for the surgery.
00:33:41I was so scared after getting on the scale, and seeing it wasn't quite ethical that Dr. Nair has sent me.
00:33:58So I'm gonna make damn sure that I'll at least lose 27 pounds in the next month.
00:34:04Because no matter what, I'm sticking to this plan.
00:34:07To go back home in eight months to keep my promise.
00:34:10And do whatever it takes so I can marry Jim.
00:34:28All right.
00:34:29You ready to do this again?
00:34:30Another appointment.
00:34:31Mm-hmm.
00:34:32Me and Chris are back at Dr. Nair's clinic, so I can do my follow-up appointment.
00:34:49And I'm really nervous now that we're here.
00:34:52My hope is that I at least made it most of the way to my goal.
00:34:55But I have no idea where my weight's gonna be.
00:34:58So I don't know what's gonna happen, or what the results are gonna be today.
00:35:02Dr. Nair says I should be losing about 15 pounds a month now.
00:35:20Carrie?
00:35:22I'd like to be down under 400.
00:35:24It's not gonna shock me if it's not a positive number on this scale.
00:35:29But I'm hoping that it is.
00:35:31The truth is, as much as I wanna be, I know I haven't been perfect.
00:35:38I hate to say cheated.
00:35:40I hate that word.
00:35:41Whenever you're ready.
00:36:05You guys can go ahead and go to room.
00:36:08That hurts.
00:36:10You know, giving up food is hard.
00:36:14Food has always been a really important part of my life.
00:36:17Still, to this day, I have food if I want it.
00:36:22I need to be better.
00:36:25I want better for me.
00:36:27Hello.
00:36:28Hello.
00:36:29Hello.
00:36:30How y'all doing?
00:36:31Good.
00:36:32How are you?
00:36:33Good.
00:36:34What's going on with you?
00:36:35I see.
00:36:36Instead of losing weight, you're getting some weight.
00:36:40What's going on with that?
00:36:4160 pounds.
00:36:42Well, didn't have such a great month.
00:36:44And so, now we're back to try and get some more structure and get deeper into following your plan set forth.
00:36:59Yeah, but you know how to eat and how to follow diets.
00:37:14What's happening?
00:37:15Is he enabling you?
00:37:17I mean...
00:37:19I could...
00:37:20You could say yeah.
00:37:22What do you mean?
00:37:23You have any bad influence on her?
00:37:26Or are you making her to eat so you can justify your own eating?
00:37:30Well, whatever she wants to eat, I'll bring it to her.
00:37:34I'll just bring it to her.
00:37:35I'll just make her happy.
00:37:37You know, what I see, both of you have a weight problem.
00:37:41And both of you are encouraging each other to eat more.
00:37:44And this is like something that's going to work bi-directional.
00:37:50And he's going to encourage him for him to eat more.
00:37:53And he sees that you eat more and he will eat more.
00:37:56So this is going to be a vicious circle that we need to break.
00:38:00Yes, sir.
00:38:01You understand that?
00:38:02Yes, sir.
00:38:03And if you continue with that, you're not going to live too long.
00:38:05Yes, sir.
00:38:06So sickening the healthy habit and try to do more activity and exercise for both of you
00:38:14and see if we can get you in better shape, okay?
00:38:17Yes, sir.
00:38:18And we'll see how you're doing in two months, okay?
00:38:21If you need anything in the meantime, give me a call.
00:38:24Okay, sure will.
00:38:25Thank you, Dr. Nell.
00:38:26You're welcome.
00:38:31That was brutal.
00:38:32Yeah.
00:38:36I expected it.
00:38:38I'm disappointed that what I've done so far isn't enough for Dr. Nell.
00:38:56I know I have to do better.
00:38:58So my plan is to do better and make it to my goal this time.
00:39:02Because I know this is it.
00:39:03I'm officially out of chances.
00:39:05So I have to do what it takes to make sure I don't fail.
00:39:09You don't want nobody to see you shiny, honey?
00:39:10No.
00:39:11You don't want nobody to see you shiny, honey?
00:39:12No.
00:39:13Not right now.
00:39:14I'm gonna surprise them.
00:39:15You don't want nobody to see you shiny, honey?
00:39:16No.
00:39:17Not right now.
00:39:18I'm gonna surprise them.
00:39:19Open it up like a Christmas present.
00:39:20Yeah.
00:39:21Ta-da.
00:39:22Ta-da.
00:39:23Woo-wee.
00:39:24Woo-wee.
00:39:25Woo-wee.
00:39:26Looking sexy, baby.
00:39:27You wanna put your ears in?
00:39:29Yeah.
00:39:34Good.
00:39:38You don't want nobody to see you shiny, honey?
00:39:39No.
00:39:40Not right now.
00:39:41I'm gonna surprise them.
00:39:42Open it up like a Christmas present.
00:39:45Yeah.
00:39:47Ta-da.
00:39:48Oh-wee.
00:39:52Looking sexy, babe.
00:39:53You wanna put your ears in?
00:39:55Put your ears in, or leave them out.
00:40:00Don't want them to cut that off, huh?
00:40:02Cut my ears off?
00:40:03Yeah.
00:40:05Damn.
00:40:10All right.
00:40:11You don't want your socks on, right?
00:40:14I don't think they're going to fit.
00:40:20All right.
00:40:25Hey, Paul.
00:40:29Morning, sir.
00:40:30How are you?
00:40:32I'm alive.
00:40:33I'm alive.
00:40:35I'm glad to hear that.
00:40:37All right, sir, are you ready for surgery?
00:40:40I'm ready.
00:40:41I am ready.
00:40:42You don't sound very convincing.
00:40:44I'm a little scared, you know, but...
00:40:47Well, being nervous is OK, because you're going to surgery,
00:40:50you're not going to picnic.
00:40:52Yeah, that's the truth.
00:40:54All right.
00:40:55Yes, sir.
00:40:56All right, so we get you fixed up,
00:40:59and you're going to be all right?
00:41:01Sounds good.
00:41:02All right.
00:41:03Ready to knock me out?
00:41:05Well, we take you to the operator,
00:41:07and then we're going to put you to sleep,
00:41:09then go do surgery, then you wake up,
00:41:11you're going to be in the recovery room, OK?
00:41:13Yes, sir.
00:41:14All right.
00:41:15We'll get started in a few minutes, OK?
00:41:17Yes, sir. Thank you.
00:41:18OK.
00:41:24Wow, I'm already feeling it right now, I'll tell you that.
00:41:25OK.
00:41:26Damn, that's some good .
00:41:27All right.
00:41:28All right, Marsha, Marsha.
00:41:29Even though that I'm really nervous,
00:41:30I know this is an important step for me
00:41:31to move towards the life I want.
00:41:32You're still driving, yeah.
00:41:33You're still driving.
00:41:34Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep.
00:41:35Right here, this is what we call the circle of love right here.
00:41:38Circle of love?
00:41:39Yeah.
00:41:40Because family is going to give hugs and kisses.
00:41:42Hey, I love you.
00:41:43I love you too, baby.
00:41:44All right.
00:41:45I'll see you afterward.
00:41:46Mm-hmm.
00:41:47That's a good luck kiss right there.
00:41:48Yeah.
00:41:49Oh, God.
00:41:50Oh, God.
00:41:51Oh, God.
00:41:52Oh, God.
00:41:53Oh, God.
00:41:54Oh, God.
00:41:55Oh, God.
00:41:56Oh, God.
00:41:57Oh, God.
00:41:58Oh, God.
00:41:59Oh, God.
00:42:00Oh, God.
00:42:01Oh, God.
00:42:02Oh, God.
00:42:03Oh, God.
00:42:04Oh, God.
00:42:05Oh, God.
00:42:06All right, ma'am.
00:42:07After the double dose is the waiting area, OK?
00:42:08OK, thank you.
00:42:09And then we're going this way.
00:42:10We'll take good care of him, OK?
00:42:11All right.
00:42:12They're good care of her too.
00:42:17So overall, I'm more excited than anything else
00:42:21because of what this means
00:42:23and what this is going to do for my life.
00:42:34Today we are attempting to perform a gastric tissue in Paul.
00:42:46He's made the goal I gave him, which is close enough to show me
00:42:50he's working harder and applying himself like he needs.
00:42:54So he's ready for this step and to have this tool to help him
00:42:58continue to lose weight.
00:42:59One more minute on this prep, please.
00:43:00I have Dr. Nazemex on the table.
00:43:01Yeah.
00:43:02She repeated it.
00:43:03Incision.
00:43:04But this surgery today is going to be likely more difficult than usual
00:43:18because the muscle lining around Paul's stomach are extremely thick.
00:43:22So that's going to make it hard to maneuver around his abdomen like we need.
00:43:27Well, can you go up a little bit more up to a head?
00:43:32Yeah.
00:43:33That would give me more room.
00:43:35OK.
00:43:36You're good.
00:43:37Targeting complete.
00:43:39All right.
00:43:41It's already proven difficult just to get inside of the abdomen.
00:43:51But there is a limited time his body can handle anesthetic.
00:43:56Because of all the strain his weight is still putting on his system.
00:44:01So if there is any significant issues or setback, we may have to stop the surgery.
00:44:08So far, in quite a difficulty, we are able to maneuver around his abdomen like we need.
00:44:15But my next concern is that Paul's belly is still so big that it may be difficult to get the machine around him to finish the operation.
00:44:24So it's looking like we should be able to complete the operation as long as there are no other issues.
00:44:33Hey, I'm Dr. Robot.
00:44:40We didn't get much sleep last night.
00:44:43He, um, his nerves got to him a lot.
00:44:46He was up probably every hour.
00:44:48Um, I woke up probably an hour before the alarm went off.
00:44:52And we didn't go to bed till late anyway.
00:44:54So it was just I think everybody was really anxious, you know, nervous, excited.
00:45:00But, you know, we got up and got here and just things have just been rolling along.
00:45:07All right, we can do with the stomach.
00:45:14Keep running, keep running, keep running.
00:45:20All right, I'm gonna put that on the table over there.
00:45:36This is a very long and large stomach.
00:45:42Let's take a look.
00:45:45Oh.
00:45:50All right.
00:45:51All right, we're done.
00:46:07And this is a very, very large stomach with the guy from Pong.
00:46:14This is a huge stomach, one of the largest I have seen.
00:46:20And he holds a lot of food.
00:46:23So we get 80% of the stomach count.
00:46:27Well, surgery went very well.
00:46:29Now we're going to get him to the recovery room.
00:46:35So it's going to be important to keep an eye on Paul over the next year.
00:46:40He will be on liquid diet for the next one,
00:46:43and he should be able to lose 35 pounds in that time.
00:46:47And after that, he should be able to lose 15 to 20 pounds each month until he gets close to his target weight.
00:46:54He's going to have to work hard.
00:46:56But if he stays on track, he can make it to around his target weight of 225 pounds in the next year.
00:47:04In a few months, once he recovers, we'll see what direction he's headed in.
00:47:10It all depends how Paul applies himself going forward.
00:47:13Ever since I went to see Dr. Nell, I feel like I have a new outlook.
00:47:20So Dr. Nell called me out on my portion control and how much I eat and how frequently during the day.
00:47:29This afternoon, I want to do a meal prep, and I think that's going to be very efficient in obtaining the goals that I've set forth for myself.
00:47:42Come in.
00:47:58Hey, how are you?
00:48:01Just doing a little journaling.
00:48:03Good. What are you doing?
00:48:05The meal prep that we were going to do, he has a list of helpful recipes.
00:48:09Mm-hmm.
00:48:10I had already gotten, I was thinking we were going to do like maybe some chicken and mixed vegetables.
00:48:15Yeah.
00:48:16Because it keeps well and I've got to make four days worth.
00:48:17Yeah.
00:48:18And it's such good protein with chicken.
00:48:20That's true.
00:48:21All right.
00:48:22Well, I'm going to clear my little and get ready.
00:48:27Okay.
00:48:28Hey, Chris.
00:48:30What's your guys up to?
00:48:32You busy?
00:48:33No.
00:48:34I can help.
00:48:35You want to grab me some gloves and the chicken and one of those new fresh lemons?
00:48:41Yeah.
00:48:42Let's do the damn thing.
00:48:43All right.
00:48:46I am very committed to Dr. Nell.
00:48:49I feel more accountability to him than I do almost to the people who are around me every day.
00:48:57Before you, I did.
00:48:58There's two more breaths.
00:49:00Okay.
00:49:01I feel like I owe it to him for giving me the time.
00:49:06Um, because there are, you know, other people who need this help just as much as I do.
00:49:13And I want to prove to him that I'm deserving.
00:49:16This band's ready to go.
00:49:18I feel like I have his eyes on me all the time.
00:49:21I want to stay committed.
00:49:22I want to stay focused.
00:49:23And I want to remember that all the time he's there.
00:49:30I think that big bag of mixed vegetables is in the big deep freeze.
00:49:33You want me to get it out?
00:49:34Yeah, if you want to.
00:49:35Mm-hmm.
00:49:36I had a hole in that one.
00:49:39Do you have any of the, your bowls that you're going to break them down into?
00:49:46Is this just for lunch or is this for your dinner also?
00:49:48Just for lunch.
00:49:49Just for lunch.
00:49:50All right.
00:49:51So I need five of them.
00:49:55Just put them in the fridge and you're set.
00:50:01For the week.
00:50:02For the week.
00:50:03Thanks for all your help.
00:50:04You're welcome.
00:50:05So, all right.
00:50:06You heading out?
00:50:07I am.
00:50:08I'll see you later.
00:50:09All right.
00:50:10It's good to see you.
00:50:11Thanks for everything.
00:50:12You're welcome.
00:50:13See ya.
00:50:14Bye.
00:50:15Bye.
00:50:25It's been a little over a month since my weight loss surgery.
00:50:38And doctor now says I'm doing good.
00:50:41And that this is the month to be focusing on maintaining my new healthy eating habits again.
00:50:47Since I went back on solid foods, I've been spending a lot of time trying to work
00:50:54and make some money.
00:51:00I've been doing food deliveries.
00:51:02Which is ironic.
00:51:03Because I'm around all this food all day doing that.
00:51:06And it all smells good.
00:51:08But right now, I don't really crave any of it.
00:51:19So I guess the surgery must be working.
00:51:24I want to lose as fast as I can so that I can go back home.
00:51:33But I've been on my own here for about three weeks.
00:51:36And it's been lonelier than I thought.
00:51:39I miss everyone already.
00:51:41Especially Jen.
00:51:42I don't want to be down here for any longer than I need to.
00:51:45So I'm going to try and talk to my family and Jen and Riley to come visit me soon.
00:51:51Because I don't think I can go months without seeing everyone.
00:51:54But for now, I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:00Because the sooner I get where I need to be, the sooner I can go home.
00:52:06But if my family comes out, it will help me keep going and keep holding on.
00:52:15And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:16And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:17And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:18And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:19And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:20And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:21And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:22And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:23And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:24And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:25And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:26And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:27And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:28And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:29And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:30And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:31And I'm just doing what I need to do.
00:52:32We are headed to Dr. Now's office for my monthly checkup.
00:52:57I'm feeling pretty good about this appointment.
00:52:59I'm a little nervous about stepping on the scale today.
00:53:03Feeling a little apprehensive simply because I don't have self-control.
00:53:09But I do feel like I've lost weight.
00:53:26Watch where you stub your dog crap right there.
00:53:29Last time Carrie gained weight, she was upset because it's been hard on the family.
00:53:41Carrie?
00:53:43But she's been doing really good with her diet and doing what Dr. Now asked her to do.
00:53:47We've been doing a lot more.
00:53:49We've been eating healthier.
00:53:51It's been hard, but we're doing it.
00:53:54We're going to get through it as a family.
00:53:57What's going to happen from here is going to be your back on track.
00:54:19That's not good.
00:54:20She don't, she don't need this.
00:54:24She needs, she needs to be, you know, um, we're sitting there, we got on this journey to be healthy.
00:54:37To start a healthy life.
00:54:38And it's just, it's so hard to do this with the process that we've been through.
00:54:46It is very upsetting that the way this process has been going, it's been very upsetting.
00:54:51Hello.
00:54:57Hi.
00:54:58How you doing?
00:54:59Good, how are you?
00:55:00Good.
00:55:01And I tell you, you're getting some weight.
00:55:02So what's going on with that?
00:55:04You going to therapy?
00:55:05I am.
00:55:06And you're trying hard, but your weight is not going down the way you want, right?
00:55:12Nope.
00:55:12It's not, um, it's not going like I planned.
00:55:14I had a week in there where it's just a bad week for me, and I didn't do well.
00:55:19I strayed from the plan, and that was entirely on, on, on me, um, because I didn't do what I was supposed to do.
00:55:27Okay, Katie, obviously you're not doing everything right, so you're not making any progress with that.
00:55:33Um, I really feel like I'm just not doing well with the diet.
00:55:39So you know what to do, what not to do?
00:55:42Yes, sir.
00:55:42I do.
00:55:43Just doing it is the problem, right?
00:55:46Right.
00:55:46Okay, and what I want is that you get hold of your eating habit.
00:55:51Okay.
00:55:51If you don't understand how to control your eating habit, even the surgery is not going to last.
00:55:57You understand that, right?
00:55:58Yes, sir, I do understand.
00:56:00You think you can do that?
00:56:01Yes, sir, I do.
00:56:02I believe I can.
00:56:03All right, so if you want to continue with the program, you go to therapy, and you work harder.
00:56:09Other than that, we have done everything we can.
00:56:12There's nothing else we can do for you, okay?
00:56:15Okay.
00:56:15Any questions?
00:56:17Uh, no, sir.
00:56:20So both of you need to work harder on getting your eating habit in a more appropriate way.
00:56:26The ball is in your cart, okay?
00:56:28Okay.
00:56:29All right, I'll see you all later.
00:56:31Thank you, sir.
00:56:31Thank you, sir.
00:56:32My goal is to come back.
00:56:50My experience with this has been a positive one for the amount of time it was available
00:57:01to me.
00:57:01I would like to see what opportunities I may have in the future with someone to be accountable
00:57:18to.
00:57:20I truly feel like it could be a positive experience.
00:57:24Um, at this point, I don't know.
00:57:28But, um, I was pleased with where it was heading.
00:57:33Um, and I'm a little distraught by the way it has ended.
00:57:42It is very upsetting that, you know, we still have a little, a long way to go, but we'll
00:57:54get there eventually.
00:57:56You know, we can't do this overnight.
00:57:58We're going to have to do it.
00:57:59I mean, it takes time.
00:58:01So we'll get it done.
00:58:02We'll get it done.
00:58:32Yay!
00:58:33My whole family, Jen and Riley, is in Houston to visit me for the week.
00:58:40It's been almost three months since the last time they came when I had surgery.
00:58:44So I'm very excited to see them.
00:58:47I love you.
00:58:49It was exciting.
00:58:51It's been a while, so it was nice to actually physically touch him other than just FaceTiming
00:58:56him again.
00:58:56Hi, son.
00:58:58How are you?
00:58:59How are you?
00:58:59I love you.
00:59:00He is my baby.
00:59:02I want to be here for my son's morale, you know, and let him know how good he's doing and,
00:59:06and try to lift him.
00:59:08I like your place.
00:59:11You need to cut your grass.
00:59:13Yeah.
00:59:13I like your baby.
00:59:13I like your baby.
00:59:14I like your baby.
00:59:15I like your baby.
00:59:16I like your baby.
00:59:17Yeah.
00:59:18Wow.
00:59:19Yay!
00:59:20Yay!
00:59:21You're right.
00:59:22This is a big damn bed.
00:59:23I feel like we're, we all kind of felt at home as soon as, you know, we kind of got here
00:59:27and got to settle in and put things away and get adjusted to the space.
00:59:34Yay!
00:59:35You're right.
00:59:36This is a big damn bed.
00:59:37Yeah.
00:59:38We slept on a King's Lays last night.
00:59:41How was your trip?
00:59:42Long?
00:59:44Well, uh, yeah, it was, but I...
00:59:47But today's four hour drive was a lot longer than the 12 hour yesterday.
00:59:50I don't know.
00:59:51It was just, today it was like...
00:59:52When you got to Louisiana, you had to be a whole lot closer, but that four hours is longer.
00:59:56It was longer.
00:59:57I think it was in bridge after bridge after bridge.
01:00:00And being here for my journey makes me feel a lot, a lot at ease.
01:00:05Being here alone is hard.
01:00:09So, I mean, it's good to have him here and support me for my journey.
01:00:19So you cooking or we going out?
01:00:21What are we doing?
01:00:22I don't know.
01:00:23What do you want?
01:00:24Because I'm starving.
01:00:25Let's go to dinner.
01:00:27Get her done.
01:00:29I was happy to be able to see him.
01:00:33Even though we talk, we talk constantly.
01:00:36I haven't seen him.
01:00:37I'm so proud of him.
01:00:38Can you get in?
01:00:41Do you want me to go to directions?
01:00:42Yes.
01:00:44You know, we all love to eat, okay?
01:00:48Let's just face it.
01:00:49But he is set.
01:00:52I know he's going to do it.
01:00:54I want nachos.
01:00:55I want one of everything on the damn menu.
01:01:01I'm having a burger.
01:01:02It's a black bean burger.
01:01:06But no bun.
01:01:08Can I do lettuce space?
01:01:10I'm very proud of his weight loss.
01:01:12It's one thing to be told a diet and then another to have to live it on a day-to-day basis.
01:01:21So hopefully this is, it turns out to be what he wants it to be.
01:01:27Well, that looks good.
01:01:28I've heard of people, you know, losing their focus and drive.
01:01:34And some people start gaining weight again.
01:01:37And so we just got to keep him motivated on sticking with it.
01:01:41I know I'm excited for you to come home.
01:01:44Riley, you excited?
01:01:45Yep.
01:01:54I have four months to get back and keep my promise.
01:01:57So I know I need to pick up the pace.
01:02:00So I'm still working hard to do that.
01:02:02Because I want to get to where me and Jen can get married.
01:02:06And I can be a good husband to her and father to Riley.
01:02:12And I'm going to do everything I possibly can to make that happen.
01:02:37Hi, how are you?
01:02:38I'm okay.
01:02:39How about yourself?
01:02:40Doing good.
01:02:41All right.
01:02:42And so today we're going to do endoscopy.
01:02:43And we're going to look down your stomach and see what the results are.
01:02:44And we'll get you started in a few minutes.
01:02:45Thank you, Dr. Nell.
01:02:46Mm-hmm.
01:02:47Mm-hmm.
01:02:48I definitely wish Chris was here.
01:02:49I don't like being alone for any kind of procedures or things like that.
01:02:54It makes me nervous.
01:02:55It makes me nervous.
01:03:16Hopefully today we won't find out that Carrie had stretched her stomach back out.
01:03:37Every time we do weight loss surgery and reduce the size of their stomach,
01:03:43if they overeat consistently, they can stretch their stomach back out.
01:03:47This scenario is what I'm concerned about with Carrie.
01:03:55Okay, my dear, I'm going to go ahead and put this blood pressure on.
01:04:02Take this mask off, okay?
01:04:04Okay.
01:04:05And then I'm going to put this maple vanilla on.
01:04:11Pull it in after me.
01:04:12Start down a little bit.
01:04:13And you're going to go right to sleep, okay?
01:04:15Okay.
01:04:16Can you have a good one?
01:04:18Okay.
01:04:20So you're going to feel the medication go in, okay?
01:04:22Okay.
01:04:23Awesome.
01:04:27Lido.
01:04:31Okay, here we go.
01:04:32A little bit this way.
01:04:38All right.
01:04:39I think we can go.
01:04:41We need to go down and hold it right here.
01:04:52All right.
01:04:53Well, she unfortunately looked like she has stretched her stomach back out.
01:04:58The good news is, it's not completely to the size like it was before.
01:05:04The bad news is, he's just over halfway there.
01:05:07But she's able to eat a good amount at one time again,
01:05:11which is obviously not a good situation.
01:05:14Open.
01:05:15We're sitting now.
01:05:16We can remove the camera.
01:05:17She said hi to honia and enlarged stomach.
01:05:18Hi to honia and enlarged stomach.
01:05:19Thank you, sir.
01:05:20Thank you, sir.
01:05:21It looked like we have a serious situation with Carrie, because it means she has been pushing
01:05:25herself to overeat to the point if she gets sick.
01:05:26So she knows that she's consistently been overeating.
01:05:27And she has been pushing herself to overeat to the point if she gets sick.
01:05:32So she knows that she's consistently been overeating, and she has not been fully honest about that.
01:05:44And at this point, it's not looking good for her.
01:05:47Because the patient that stretched the stomach back out like this always failed the operation.
01:06:06Unless we do an aggressive revision, like full Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
01:06:12But that's not a step I'm willing to take unless she showed me she's willing to do the work to get back on track.
01:06:21And succeed if I give her another chance like that.
01:06:25Because right now, I don't see it turning out different.
01:06:29And if she wants to convince me otherwise, she's going to have to show me some progress.
01:06:35But she needs to do that soon, or she's going to end up gaining all her weight back.
01:06:41We're back in your room, okay?
01:06:43Yeah.
01:06:48I'm in room 14.
01:06:50I'll get a nurse and be right back.
01:06:52You did great, my dear.
01:06:54You're welcome.
01:06:55Bye.
01:07:11Everyone visiting went home after about a week.
01:07:18And I've been back on my own for about a month.
01:07:21At first, when everyone came, it encouraged me.
01:07:24And it made me feel like I can keep going on in Houston on my own.
01:07:30But after a week of being here again, it actually started to feel harder.
01:07:35Having them here just ended up making me miss home and Jen and Riley and all my family.
01:07:41And it made me realize even more how much I want to ask Jen to marry me and start a new life with her and Riley.
01:07:48I'm starting to feel ready, and I have three months left to keep my promise.
01:07:52I asked her to marry me, and I can't wait for that.
01:07:55For right now, I'm just trying the best to do what I need to make as much progress as possible.
01:08:09I'm hoping that somehow I can lose enough in the next two months to get skin removal.
01:08:15Because that would give me about a month to heal before I need to head back.
01:08:19So that's what I'm working on to make happen.
01:08:39Dr. Nass says I'm staying on track.
01:08:52But he thinks I'm going to need to be around 350 to be ready for skin removal.
01:08:58He says it's possible that I might need it once I get below 400.
01:09:04So I'm trying to do that.
01:09:06But it's going to take about a 60-pound weight loss by my next appointment in two months.
01:09:12And that's a lot.
01:09:14But I'm extremely determined to do that.
01:09:16And I'm going to give everything in me to make it to that goal by then.
01:09:21Because my whole life and the woman and son I love are all waiting on this.
01:09:27So I have to make this happen.
01:09:29I have to make this happen.
01:09:35It's happening.
01:09:37I don't know.
01:10:07I'm here at Dr. Now's for my appointment, and I've made a decision.
01:10:25I decided if I haven't made it to where I can get skin removal by today, that I'm going
01:10:30to move back to Florida.
01:10:33I just can't wait.
01:10:37I know that I have two more months before it will be a year to my promised date, but I
01:11:01just can't wait any longer.
01:11:05Paul?
01:11:09I was at 461 two months ago, and I'm supposed to be losing at least 15 to 20 pounds a month.
01:11:16So to be on track, I need to be at least below 431 today.
01:11:25We're going to get on the scale.
01:11:27Just give me a sec.
01:11:28Yes, ma'am.
01:11:29Okay, step up on the scale, please.
01:11:34Okay, step up on the scale, please.
01:12:03I'm here at Dr. Now's for my appointment.
01:12:07I was at 461 two months ago, and I'm supposed to be losing at least 15 to 20 pounds a month.
01:12:15So to be on track, I need to be at least below 431 today.
01:12:19And we'll be going to room five.
01:12:28Yes, ma'am.
01:12:29I'm pretty much still on track.
01:12:33But I know that since I didn't make it under the 400s, there's no chance of getting skin
01:12:39remover right now.
01:12:40So I think I need to tell Doc that I'm sorry, but I have to go back to Florida early.
01:12:47If I decide to get skin remover in the future, I'll come back down.
01:12:52The start of my future is the most important thing to me right now.
01:12:55Hello.
01:12:56How you doing, Dr. Now?
01:12:57Hi, Paul.
01:12:58How are you doing?
01:12:59Good, sir.
01:13:00All right.
01:13:01So you're doing as good as you can expect.
01:13:02So how do you feel losing 300 pounds?
01:13:03I feel amazing.
01:13:04I mean, it's a lot easier for me to get out of bed, you know?
01:13:06It's a lot easier for me to do my, you know, my normal day routine that I want to do, you
01:13:26know?
01:13:27I want to get up and I want to move.
01:13:29I don't have to sit down all the time.
01:13:32I could stand more.
01:13:34When I first started, I was a bum, you know?
01:13:38And now...
01:13:39In six months, you're going to be in mid 300.
01:13:44And then at that point, some extra skin needs to become off to improve your body contour as well as hanging
01:13:53your skin is going to be an issue then.
01:13:55Yes, sir.
01:13:56But until then, you keep up with the diet and your exercises and keep your muscle tone going
01:14:03and that's going to be the goal that you need to look forward to.
01:14:08Yes, sir.
01:14:09I have a question.
01:14:11I had to go back home.
01:14:14So I can't stay here because it's financial, you know?
01:14:21And I just wanted to talk to you about that and let you know so we can make appointments and I can be here to...
01:14:31Well, Paul, your next appointment is going to be in two months and then following that is going to be another three months.
01:14:38Okay.
01:14:39So as long as you keep your appointment and if you have any questions or issues, give it a call.
01:14:45Yes, sir.
01:14:46And that'll be fine.
01:14:47So the period of time that you have been in here after surgery, it looked like everything is working well.
01:14:54So it's going to be okay to go back home.
01:14:57All right.
01:14:58Thank you, sir.
01:14:59All right?
01:15:00Yes, sir.
01:15:01Okay.
01:15:02So we'll keep an eye on you and see how things are and see you in your regular appointment, okay?
01:15:07Yes, sir.
01:15:08All right, Paul.
01:15:09I'm glad you're doing so well.
01:15:10I'm proud of your progress so far, but we still got more to go.
01:15:15Yes, sir.
01:15:16All right.
01:15:17Yes, sir.
01:15:18All right.
01:15:19Everyone.
01:15:20All right.
01:15:25I'm happy that Dr. Mal is willing to let me go back now.
01:15:44And I'm excited to be going home.
01:15:47I'm not sure if I want to come back for skin removal.
01:15:51But all I care about right now is moving back home and proposing to June.
01:15:57About a week ago, Carrie called me to tell me that she no longer wants to participate in my program.
01:16:25She said she wants to get healthy and she bought out the weight she lost and thankful for the chance she was given, but she cannot do this anymore.
01:16:35So that is obviously very disappointing.
01:16:38Just six months ago, she was doing well and I was optimistic about her long-term potential.
01:16:45Dr. Nass says I should be losing at least 15 pounds a month now.
01:16:49And if I did that, I'll be up 442 now.
01:16:53Good job.
01:16:54All right, Carrie.
01:16:55Looks like you're staying on track where you should be.
01:16:56So I'm proud of you.
01:16:58So just keep it up.
01:16:59And if you do that, I think we can get you to your target rate within next 10 to 12 months.
01:17:12How does that sound?
01:17:13Fantastic.
01:17:14So it's very unfortunate she has made that decision.
01:17:19But we did all we can and provided her with every opportunity and resource possible to help her.
01:17:26But at the end of the day, it all comes down to a choice and we cannot make that for everyone.
01:17:33Carrie made her choice and I don't think that's gonna end up well for her.
01:17:38I hold my hope that maybe she will come to her senses at some point and try to get back on track and work to do what she needs.
01:17:48But right now, I don't think that it's likely is gonna happen.
01:17:52How far do you want to go?
01:18:09The palm tree's down pretty good.
01:18:11Down there?
01:18:12Yeah.
01:18:13Today, I'm taking a walk with Jim on the same beach where I promised I would take her walking when I was still 600 pounds.
01:18:19It's been about a month since I came back from Houston.
01:18:22And it's been really good to be back in Florida.
01:18:24Jim is the love of my life.
01:18:26And I would never be able to forgive myself if I did anything to lose her.
01:18:30That's why I did what any smart man would do.
01:18:33I put a ring on it.
01:18:34My son is fixing to do it.
01:18:36Look at him, got on his knees.
01:18:38This is awesome.
01:18:44Okay.
01:18:49And go on.
01:18:50Yay!
01:18:51That's right.
01:18:52We're officially engaged.
01:18:53And I'm pretty much over the moon about it.
01:19:09It would have been perfect if I would have finished my program with Dr. Now.
01:19:13But I was so excited for this moment.
01:19:15I just couldn't wait anymore.
01:19:17You said you might get in it?
01:19:18No.
01:19:20You want to go down and feel how cold it is?
01:19:22No.
01:19:23Come on.
01:19:28Yeah.
01:19:29It's not that cold.
01:19:38Oh, no.
01:19:39No.
01:19:44Oh, was that a fish?
01:19:45What was that?
01:19:47I hope it stays over there.
01:19:49I can get you.
01:19:50After all the hard work I did in Houston, I have made it down to 400 pounds.
01:19:54And that is enough improvement for me to feel excited about my future again.
01:19:59I'm blessed, you know?
01:20:00Like, I got to bring her out here and we got to have a picnic together.
01:20:03And life is, um, it's an enjoyment.
01:20:06Jump for joy, you know?
01:20:07Because a year ago I couldn't do this.
01:20:10It was just a stressful time in my life.
01:20:14And now I'm happy.
01:20:17Thank you for coming and walking on the beach with me.
01:20:20You're welcome, baby.
01:20:22I'm glad I can do it now, you know?
01:20:24Me too.
01:20:25You know, a year ago you couldn't do it.
01:20:28And now, you know, this has definitely opened up a world of possibilities of things that we can definitely do in the future, you know?
01:20:37It's just a peaceful time and I'm able to do it and enjoy the time with you.
01:20:45And then, you know, in the future, enjoy the time that we're going to be with you and Riley, you know?
01:20:53Next time, definitely bring Fish and Paul's.
01:20:55Yeah, definitely.
01:20:56Bring him.
01:20:57Bring him.
01:20:59It was really exciting to be able to come out here and have Paul walk on the beach with me for the first time.
01:21:06I mean, it's just a milestone in our relationship that, like, this is just the beginning of what is yet to come.
01:21:13Being able to do this and create memories with Riley and it's just a whole new opportunity.
01:21:19And just the options that are open to being able to stand in all of the oceans around the world now.
01:21:25Like, it's just, it's really exciting and a really cool thing to think about.
01:21:30Uh-uh, don't you do it.
01:21:32Paul Jacob.
01:21:34Now I can give Jen and Riley the life that I dreamed of, being able to provide for them.
01:21:39There are already so many things I can do now that I couldn't do compared to a year ago.
01:21:45And even though I didn't finish Dr. Now's playing, I'm still working hard to get my weight down to 200 pounds, just like he said.
01:21:52So I can be improved for skin surgery.
01:21:56I feel like I'm on top of the world.
01:22:06Here you go.
01:22:19Say she'll come?
01:22:21When you went to work out, I heard the donkey down here laughing.
01:22:27Yeah.
01:22:28I can't.
01:22:34Dr. Garrett?
01:22:35I found a job that will keep me home and help me provide for my family.
01:22:40And that's important to me.
01:22:42I haven't wanted to be a burden in any way.
01:22:44So I wasn't going to get married unless I could do my part.
01:22:48And it feels great to achieve that.
01:22:50So since these walks are getting easier, where do you think you want to go to next?
01:22:55Oh, man.
01:22:57I don't know.
01:22:58Really?
01:22:59Theme parks, yeah.
01:23:01Theme parks?
01:23:02Yeah.
01:23:03I'm down.
01:23:04It feels great to know that I'm not going to be a burden to anyone.
01:23:09To know I can be the person I wanted to be now.
01:23:12To the people I care about the most.
01:23:15I'm a better man now.
01:23:18I'm able to do more stuff with my family.
01:23:21And that's just a blessing.
01:23:27Oh, you're 11.
01:23:28Okay.
