00:00And we immediately switch to the NFL for some very big breaking news.
00:10The Seattle Seahawks are trading quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, reuniting
00:19him with his former head coach Pete Carroll, who is obviously now in charge with the Raiders.
00:26So first big domino to drop as far as quarterbacks this offseason, Geno Smith takes over in Las
00:34Vegas and now one of the division foes for the Niners is on the search for a QB.
00:39There you go.
00:40And many, many more little newslets and that sounder, the breaking news and all the rest
00:44of it still yet to come.
00:46And that's one that is a little surprising to me, but when you take a step back and you
00:51think about where Pete is in his coaching career and in his life, he's probably not
00:56thinking about draft and develop.
00:58And if he likes Geno Smith and bring in Geno, Geno Smith is probably the 17th best quarterback
01:05in football.
01:06Or, you know, I mean, we can put a number to it, but he's a guy you can win with.
01:09Well, veteran is clearly what they were looking for.
01:11I think the Raiders were big time after Matt Stafford when they were unable to do that
01:15and the Rams were able to keep him.
01:17This was their pivot.
01:18A third round pick will go from the Raiders to Seattle.
01:21But yeah, I mean, part of it might just be the situation that Pete Carroll is in, his
01:26age, what have you.
01:27But I think it's where where the Raiders are, right?
01:30You watch what they did yesterday.
01:32They're resigning Max Crosby.
01:33They're not going into full reboot mode.
01:36They need something that is at least legitimate at the quarterback position.
01:42And and so this is it.
01:44So I would imagine if I'm the Raiders, I'm doing this alongside trying to really find
01:53the, quote, QB of the future at the same time.
01:56So this is a little stopgap because let's also think about what is reality for the Raiders.
02:02You're in a division with Patrick Mahomes, you're in a division with Justin Herbert,
02:06and it looks like the other team found their guy, too, with Bo Nix going to the playoffs
02:10as a rookie.
02:11This is going to be a tall assignment for them for, quite frankly, the next seven to
02:15ten years in that division.
02:17Gino Smith makes them a team better, but they're still definitely going to be predicted to
02:24be fourth and they need to try to get more dynamic about position at some point.
02:28Right.
02:29So their quarterback position went from fourth in the division to fourth in the division.
02:33And I mean, Bo Nix, I do think, showed a good amount last year.
02:37He showed that he's not only capable, but he's a guy who can make plays.
02:40And so he's not going to be knocking on the door of Herbert or Mahomes just yet.
02:45But he, I think, is a guy you can pencil in for the next three years and think about a
02:50fifth year option.
02:51And he might eventually be their guy.
02:53Gino Smith is stopgap.
02:55And if you're looking for a stopgap, why not go with the one that you already know that
02:59you can work with?
03:00Yeah.
03:01And somebody who, again, is viable enough to move the ball up and down the field.
03:05Like I bet there are already fans thinking about, ooh, so where would you draft Brock
03:11Bowers in your fantasy league now?
03:13Like he's good enough to where that offense is going to be able to move the ball a little
03:19bit better.
03:20But to me, for sure, the bigger news here for the 49ers is that one of the teams in
03:27the division just went quarterbackless.
03:31And it's not the team that, quote, scared you.
03:33I think that's the Rams.
03:35But the Seahawks were a team.
03:37I mean, they came to the Levi's and beat you last year.
03:40Right.
03:41Gino beat you.
03:42Yeah.
03:43What the hell is they doing at quarterback now?
03:44It feels to me like a little bit of a reboot across the board and you're going to get rid
03:48of DK Metcalf, right?
03:49So when the league year begins, you're going to...
03:52In theory, they will.
03:53He's asked to.
03:54Right.
03:55So you're either going to trade him or cut him and save the cap room.
03:58And this might be one of those years where Seattle just eats it and looks to draft a
04:02quarterback and start their rebuild.
04:04I'm wondering, where is Seattle in the draft order?
04:09I don't have that off the top of my head.
04:11Let me, let me do it because I got it.
04:14Seattle is probably what, right behind the 49ers.
04:18Is that is that where they are?
04:19Is my guess Seattle scrolling, scrolling.
04:24Seattle is at...
04:25I've got them at...
04:2618.
04:27Yes.
04:28Okay.
04:29Yeah.
04:30Pretty far behind.
04:31And that's what I'm getting at.
04:32Because you're not getting one there.
04:35You're not getting one at 18.
04:37No.
04:38No.
04:39I mean, I don't think you're getting one, period.
04:40I don't think anyone's getting one this year in the draft.
04:43I don't love any of the quarterbacks.
04:45This feels like the Kenny Pickett draft class where there may not have been much in the
04:50offing early.
04:51Well, this feels like maybe you get a guy in the third or the fourth, somebody you really
04:55like.
04:56I mean, are they going to go get Sam Darnold?
04:58Kirk Cousins just asked for a meeting in Atlanta and said, please send me somewhere
05:02where I can be the starting quarterback.
05:04I don't know if the Falcons are going to do that.
05:06But that...
05:07And look, he's getting really up there in age.
05:09I don't know if that's who you'd want.
05:11But it's funny because Seattle gives away Geno Smith to be a stopgap and that's what
05:16they need to.
05:17Yep.
05:18They need...
05:19They've got the gap and they need to stop it.
05:21And so I don't know what they're going to do, but this is the first domino.
05:25And where it heads, I don't know.
05:27But for the moment, one of the division foes for the 49ers just got a lot weaker.
05:32For now.
05:33Yep.
05:34Absolutely.
05:35And Geno is set to make $25 million on the cap.
05:36So Seattle gets that cap relief and he's in the final year of his deal.
05:40So this would have been it anyway, I would imagine, for Geno in Seattle.
05:45And man, he's quietly 35 years old.
05:48I didn't realize that Geno was that old.
05:50He's been around for a while.
05:51He has been around for a lot longer than I thought.
05:53Maybe it's just because he hasn't been a starter or a mainstay for that long.
05:56But for Geno, he's now going to be playing for one last bite of the apple, one last big
06:02contract.
06:03And if you're Seattle, you didn't want to extend him.
06:05So now you just kind of rip the bandaid off.
06:08And Aaron Rodgers is a guy who might be available.
06:11You've got Joe Flacco.
06:13If you're looking at other stopgaps, there are other stopgaps out there.
06:17And then there are other surprises out there because that's what just happened.
06:21And I felt like, by the way, the NFL media knows something.
06:25I would love to know the anatomy of all of this because I started to see the whispers
06:29last night that a starting quarterback was about to change teams.
06:34A starting quarterback.
06:36Now, I have no idea what.
06:38You know, some people started throwing around the name Baker Mayfield.
06:41That didn't make much sense to me.
06:42He played really well.
06:43I think Tampa moves on with him.
06:46But now here it is.
06:47So you can sort of smell this stuff coming, I guess.
06:50If you're really, really tapped in and locked in.
06:53But I'm sure there are more surprises coming, you know.
06:56And so right now, the word is Minnesota's working to keep Sam Darnold.
07:01Not sure if I buy that or not.
07:03If someone's going to offer him more years and a starting job for sure with no first
07:09round rookie over his shoulder, I bet Sam would take that.
07:13So I mean, that feels like a potential match.
07:16Sam Darnold, a West Coast guy and the Seattle Seahawks.
07:19I could see that.
07:20Yeah, it makes sense, depending on how much money and how many years he'll be asking for.
07:25Because if you're Seattle and you're going to part with Geno Smith, you're probably looking
07:30to at some point draft a replacement, somebody that you can get on a rookie deal for four
07:35or five years.
07:36Feels to me like that is the way you want to go about it.
07:39Jaden Daniels in Washington, CJ Stroud, Caleb Williams in Chicago, they have their fingers
07:45crossed that he's going to be that guy.
07:48Feels to me like that's the best way to go about it.
07:51You find a quarterback in the draft, you get three or four years of relatively cheap labor,
07:56and then you love him, you sign him, you keep him, he gets better, and you go on to the
08:01Super Bowl.
08:02Now sometimes it goes the other way, where you go the Dak Prescott route, or you go the
08:06Deshaun Watson route, where you pay a guy a ton of money and he doesn't necessarily
08:11work out.
08:12So you get Geno Smith for $25 million in the final year of his deal, and you figure we'd
08:17be better off going another direction and maybe finding a stopgap for cheaper and drafting
08:23a guy.
08:24I don't know, it's clear that they didn't want to keep Geno after this year.
08:26You know who could go back to Seattle?
08:28Pete Carroll's not there anymore.
08:32Sign Russell Wilson.
08:33Yeah, there you go.
08:34How about that?
08:35How about that?
08:36Russ on the move?
08:38I don't know.
08:39I mean, I was just looking at the board, seeing how many teams in the NFL like truly right
08:42now don't know who their quarterback is.
08:45Seattle joins the group, right?
08:47Seattle is in there.
08:48I guess you'd have to put Pittsburgh and Cleveland in there.
08:51You'd have to put the New York Jets in there.
08:54The Tennessee Titans are in there.
08:57I guess to a degree the Minnesota Vikings are there, but it's either going to be Sam
09:01or they're going to turn it over to J.J. McCarthy.
09:03So I don't think that's like an open job.
09:06Maybe the Indianapolis Colts, I think they want to bring in someone to compete with Richardson.
09:12Those are the gigs.
09:14And so the Raiders gig just gets taken up.
09:16And with names like Russell Wilson, throw Daniel Jones in there as well.
09:20Kirk Cousins, Sam Darnold, like that's the group.
09:25And then of course the rookies, but a lot of those teams are not in position to find
09:28any of those rookies.
09:29The Titans are.
09:32And that's about it.
09:33In a draft class that may only have two first round quarterbacks, maybe three, which is
09:37where you want to take them if you like them.
09:39That way you get five years of control.
09:41You get four years and you get that fifth year option.
09:43So I don't know how deep the quarterback draft is further down the board.
09:47If you like somebody who is a day two or a day three pick, maybe you bring in a Flacco
09:52or a stopgap guy to just hold the position for a year and you go out there and you try
09:57to see what you can do after that.
10:00But Gino Smith, a guy who he did better than many people would have thought in Seattle.
10:05Yet you kind of went up against a point where the salary was going to be greater than their
10:09desire to keep you.
10:11So there it is.
10:12Gino Smith is a Raider and the Seahawks join the quarterback market.
10:17OK, we're sponsored by Crystal Geyser, Alpine Springwater.
10:20I like what you said with regard to like get that breaking news button.
10:23Make sure it's right there on the board, because Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, we're probably
10:27going to be hitting it a lot with NFL free agency coming, coming around the bend here.
10:32So it's going to be an interesting week next week.
10:34Yeah, for sure.
10:35And this one pops off before Monday with a legal tampering period begins at nine o'clock
10:40mark.
10:41We're going to hit the air at one forty eight with a refreshed Stiney and Guru.
10:46There's going to be all kinds of refreshing going on tampering up in here.
10:49I'm looking forward to that for sure.
