The afternoon starts off grey but dry in most places across the UK, but a weak weather front brings scattered spells of light rain to southern England. As the afternoon progresses sunny skies will become more common in southwestern and northern England as well as in central Scotland. The temperatures are a little below average for the time of year. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 22/01/2025. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Alex Deakin.

00:00Hello, the relative calm before the storm.
00:04The weather is going to be getting livelier
00:06over the next 24 hours.
00:07Storm Eowyn will arrive Thursday night and into Friday.
00:11Quite a bit of cloud covering the southeast of the UK today.
00:14Then there's a clearer zone.
00:15This band of cloud will provide a spell
00:18of wet and windy weather during Thursday.
00:20And then behind me, well, the cloud
00:22is brewing up a little bit.
00:24But if we look at what Storm Eowyn is at the moment,
00:27it's this weak area of low pressure.
00:30But it isn't going to stay like that.
00:31It's gradually going to intensify
00:33as we go through the next 24 hours
00:35and then really intensifies as it
00:38heads towards the Republic of Ireland during Thursday night
00:42and into Friday.
00:43Then crosses close to Northern Ireland and into Scotland.
00:46The strongest winds where the isobars are closest together
00:49in this zone, in its southern flank.
00:52That's where we're going to see damaging gusts of wind.
00:54But it is going to be a very windy day everywhere.
00:57Could be disruption right across the UK.
00:59More on that in a moment.
01:01First of all, though, let's get through this afternoon.
01:03Weak weather front still providing some rain and drizzle
01:05over parts of East Anglia and the southeast.
01:07Quite a gray, gloomy, murky, cold day here.
01:10Apart from that, though, many places dry.
01:12A few showers for North Wales, West Coast of Wales,
01:15West Coast of Scotland.
01:17But elsewhere, tending to brighten up a little bit.
01:19Some places seeing a little bit of sunshine.
01:22And the winds are, at the moment, pretty light.
01:25Temperatures still struggling.
01:26A touch below average in most locations,
01:28particularly across East Anglia and parts of the southeast
01:30where it's dank and murky.
01:32Struggling to get much above three or four Celsius.
01:34A bit of brightness elsewhere.
01:36Maybe six or seven degrees Celsius.
01:39As we go through this evening, that's
01:40dank and drizzly weather should tend
01:43to pull away from the southeast.
01:44A few showers keeping going in the west here and there
01:46around coast.
01:47But most places having a dry night with decent clear spells.
01:51And where the skies are clearest,
01:53northeast England, northeast Scotland,
01:55we will see a frost.
01:56And many towns and cities actually
01:57not far away from freezing to start Thursday morning.
02:01Fairly chilly old starts.
02:03But actually, temperatures starting to rise further west
02:06because that line of cloud I pointed out
02:08on the satellite picture earlier,
02:09that's this band of rain.
02:11That's moving in through tomorrow.
02:12Now, this will be pretty lively.
02:14It's going to bring a spell of rain
02:15across Northern Ireland fairly sharply in the morning.
02:18And then the winds picking up around the coasts of Wales,
02:21southwest England, and through the day
02:22along the south coast of England as well.
02:24So we've got Met Office yellow warning in place
02:27for those gusty winds.
02:28That rain will zip through, but it will be quite heavy,
02:32certainly for a time, and linger for much of the afternoon
02:35across northern England, parts of Scotland.
02:37Be a bit of snow mixed in as well over the hills,
02:39particularly over Scotland, but also northern England.
02:41Tends to clear through further south,
02:43so something a bit brighter and drier through the afternoon.
02:45But still fairly blustery, given the winds
02:48have been pretty light for a while.
02:49That will be quite noticeable.
02:51Temperature wise, 5, 6, 7, so just
02:53starting to creep up for many places, 9, 10
02:56across parts of the south and west.
02:57So it is going to turn a little milder.
02:59But as we go through Thursday evening,
03:03as that rain band clears away, we
03:05will see those temperatures falling away quite sharply.
03:08And then eyes out to the southwest.
03:11The clouds start to thicken up through the course
03:13of Thursday night.
03:14This is the first sign of Storm Eoin
03:18pushing into the far southwest of Ireland
03:20with some heavy rain during Thursday evening.
03:23But of course, it's not going to stop there.
03:24The storm system intensifying through Thursday
03:28and then tracking across parts of the Republic of Ireland,
03:31northern Ireland up towards Scotland,
03:33as I said, where these isobars are closest together.
03:35That's where the strongest winds are going to be.
03:37But it is going to be a very windy day right across the UK.
03:41The weather fronts providing the rain,
03:43they tend to scoot out of the way.
03:44So certainly across the south, much of Friday will be dry.
03:48The strongest winds likely through the first part of Friday
03:51across the south and during Thursday night,
03:53certainly across the Republic of Ireland.
03:55Let's put the wind gusts on as we go through Thursday night,
03:58really whipping up along the south coast of the Republic
04:01of Ireland, then into the west.
04:03There's darker colours there.
04:05But then as the storm system moves its way up
04:07to the western Scotland, some really strong gusts
04:10for northern Ireland, across the Irish Sea
04:13as well, and generally across northern England.
04:15So it's in this swathe that we're
04:17most concerned about the strength of the wind.
04:19And well, it stays pretty windy through Friday night.
04:23And as the storm system clears away,
04:24we'll see some of the strongest winds across northern Scotland
04:27actually develop during Friday night and into Saturday.
04:30So there are a number of Met Office warnings
04:33in place for the next few days.
04:35Amber warning issued this morning
04:37covering central and southern Scotland, northern Ireland,
04:39parts of northern England, and north Wales.
04:42Gusts here widely, 60 to 70 miles an hour inland.
04:46We could easily get to 80 miles an hour, possibly
04:49in exposed areas up to 90 miles an hour.
04:51Those kind of winds are going to cause structural damage,
04:53bring down power lines, potentially bring down trees.
04:55So expect power issues, maybe even disruption
04:58to mobile phone services.
05:00Certainly widespread travel disruption
05:02with these kind of gusts of wind.
05:04But it's not only in the amber warning area
05:07that we are concerned.
05:08Broader yellow wind warnings covering
05:10pretty much all of the UK.
05:12Those winds may be a little lighter elsewhere,
05:14but still potentially damaging, still
05:16likely to cause some disruption.
05:18There are also other warnings in place for rain.
05:21As we see, Thursday's rain followed by more rain
05:24on Friday for Wales, parts of southwest England.
05:26That does bring the potential for some flooding.
05:29And as storm Eowyn moves in, it will
05:32bring some snow over the hills of northern England for a time,
05:35and then lingering over the hills and mountains
05:37of northern Scotland.
05:38So we've got a snow warning in place here.
05:41And the wind warnings continue across parts of Scotland
05:45into Saturday.
05:47So as I said, plenty going on.
05:49Likes to be more wet and windy weather coming in on Sunday
05:51as well.
