00:00South Pacific countries bid farewell to the year 2024 and welcome the year 2025 with fireworks
00:18and large parties.
00:21UN experts demanded an end to the protection of Israel's international allies so the
00:27Zionist regime can be held accountable for the genocide it commits on Gaza.
00:34And in Ecuador, the National Electoral Council rejected a request to discuss the irregularity
00:38that President Novoa intends to commit by staying in office while campaigning for re-election.
00:50Hello welcome from the south, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisa Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:56We begin with the news.
00:57The South Pacific countries are the first regions worldwide to bid farewell to the year
01:012024 and welcome the year 2025.
01:04Kiribati was the first country to celebrate the arrival of the new year 2025 with fireworks
01:08and festivities.
01:09The city of Auckland in New Zealand joined this worldwide celebration with thousands
01:13of people and the traditional countdown and colorful fireworks launched from the country's
01:17tallest structure, the Sky Tower.
01:20Likewise, other regions such as Samoa, Tonga, Chatham Islands, Fiji and Australia celebrated
01:26with their families the traditional arrival of the new year.
01:36The Indian Space Research Organisation described Tuesday as a success the lift-off of the Spadex
01:42mission, the two-satellite docking experiment that will advance future manned spaceflight.
01:48Some goals of the Spadex mission are to enhance and demonstrate the technology required for
01:54rendezvous which involves docking and undocking of small spacecraft in a low circular orbit
01:59around Earth.
02:00The project counts on a novel processor that facilitates determining accurately the relative
02:06position and velocity of small spacecraft.
02:08Moreover, the mission serves as a test for the small satellite launch vehicles that India
02:13started producing for commercial purposes.
02:16Furthermore, it will be paramount for future lunar expeditions and the Baratie Antarctics
02:21Station.
02:22Vietnam's capital will raise its stakes in the tourism sector by 2025.
02:32Hanoi expects to welcome 30 million tourists, including 7 million foreign visitors.
02:37The numbers compare fairly with the 2024 figures.
02:42This year, Hanoi welcomed over 27.8 million travelers, 12.7 percent more than in 2023.
02:47According to the Municipal Department of Tourism, in 2024, revenue generated by the sector totaled
02:52$4.33 billion, a year-on-year rise of 18.3 percent.
02:58The Vietnamese capital introduced more than 20 new night tourism activities this year
03:02and developed seven pedestrian streets with culinary and cultural activities.
03:13The United States has detained nearly 44,000 people at the southern border with Mexico
03:18during the month of December.
03:20According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office, the figure could increase slightly
03:25in the last hours of 2024.
03:27The data corresponds to the statistics that have been maintained throughout the year.
03:32The border office assures that the levels registered since July are maintained and points
03:36out that December becomes the sixth consecutive month with figures lower than those registered
03:41in the monthly average of 2019.
03:43In this context, the Mexican government's immigration policy has achieved a 75 percent
03:48reduction in railroad crossings of its northern border.
03:57And in the United States, California farmers are increasingly alarmed by pressing electronic
04:02Trump's deportation plans, which threaten to disrupt the agricultural workforce.
04:06In the Central Valley, where nearly half of farm workers are undocumented, many farmers
04:11rely on this labor for essential tasks, like hand-picking crops, while some dairy farmers
04:16remain skeptical about the likelihood of mass deportations.
04:20Fruit and nut growers fear that such actions could lead to significant labor shortages,
04:24resulting in wasted harvests and rising food prices.
04:28Many farmers who supported Trump now face the grim reality that his policies could devastate
04:33their operations.
04:34Advocates warn that mass deportations will not only harm the agricultural sector, but
04:38also exacerbate existing issues of food insecurity and inflation.
04:50We don't know what mass deportation is going to mean.
04:53We don't know when it's going to start.
04:55He says it's going to be in day one.
04:57I don't know where he's going to start, because if there are millions of people here, he obviously
05:02can't cover the whole country at one time.
05:05I don't know where he's going to go.
05:06Hopefully, it gives us time to reach out to the administration and talk to them about
05:14immigration for our essential workers, like our farm workers, that, you know, we can't
05:21have deportations here because it would disrupt our food supply for the country.
05:27We really don't think that anybody wants that.
05:32In Mexico, every month, relatives and companions of 43 students from Ayotzinapa, who disappeared
05:37more than 10 years ago, take to the streets, this time at the end of the year, to visit
05:41the Temple of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
05:43Daniel Rosas, our correspondent, with more details.
05:56As they do every month, the families of the 43 disappeared from Ayotzinapa arrived in
06:01Mexico City to make a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Guadalupe.
06:08We ask for a softening of the hearts of those people who took our children away.
06:12The pilgrimage for the students is also taking place.
06:19Like every year end, since more than 10 years ago, when their children were disappeared,
06:24they walked to Guadalupe to ask for the favor of the indigenous virgin.
06:32Let us hope that we are in good health to move forward and that we can find the boys
06:35and ask the Virgin Mary to touch the hearts of these indolent authorities.
06:45In early December, they had a meeting with Claudia Scheinbaum, already in her capacity
06:50as president of Mexico, and she committed to continue the investigation.
06:57We have no choice but to continue the dialogue with the president, the meetings, to discuss
07:01issues that lead to the investigation, because that is our priority.
07:09The slogans for truth and justice do not change, but they trust that their faith will give
07:14them the strength to continue their struggle.
07:18The pain persists despite the fact that more than 10 years and 3 months have passed.
07:23The pain, the sadness, the absence of these relatives are still there.
07:27Life is not the way we want it to be.
07:44In the Basilica, they are received with the message, do not get tired, be firm, keep searching
07:50for the truth, before participating in a mass that they
07:58will grant them the favors requested to the Virgin of Guadalupe.
08:04Daniel Rosas, Telesur, Ciudad de Mexico.
08:07We have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesur
08:11English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
08:17We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:27Welcome back.
08:56Through a joint statement, more than 11 experts at the Service of the United Nations demanded
09:00an end to the protection of Israel's international allies, so the Syrian regime can be held accountable
09:06for the genocide it commits on Gaza.
09:09The statement highlights the lack of responsibility of the Tel Aviv government for having openly
09:13defied international humanitarian law.
09:16To this end, experts from all fields listed with data the extensive number of war crimes
09:22perpetrated by the Israeli troops, among them murder, torture, sexual violence, forced displacement,
09:28destruction of hospitals, schools, and the use of starvation as a weapon of war.
09:33Crimes are part of the host of atrocities that Netanyahu's administration commits thanks
09:37to the protection provided by governments such as the United States, the United Kingdom,
09:43France, Germany, among others.
09:51Israelis-Palestinians within the Gaza Strip are facing a difficult situation as heavy
09:54rains have flooded dozens of tents in Deir el-Bala downtown and in southern al-Mawassi.
10:00These rains are accompanied by thunderstorms and falling temperatures, providing the situation
10:04for the nearly 1.6 million Gazans illegally displaced to makeshift shelters.
10:10Gazan authorities reported that at least 110,000 out of the 135,000 tents in which the refugees
10:16are staying are unfit for use.
10:19As a result, thousands are subjected to rain and low temperatures, while the health system
10:23is slowly destroyed by the genocidal forces.
10:31On Tuesday, Yemeni Houthi forces launched a drone and missile attack on the USS Harry
10:35S. Truman aircraft carrier.
10:38Precisely, the spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces, Yahya Sadeh, informed that a joint
10:44operation by the Navy, Missile Force and Air Force had managed to hit the ninth U.S.
10:49nuclear device.
10:50The military spokesman also said they had foiled an attack by Washington forces on their
10:55territory and unveiled they had carried out an operation hours earlier using Palestinian
11:00Class II hypersonic missiles on Israeli territory.
11:11The South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport briefed Tuesday having identified
11:16174 out of the 179 fatal victims from the December 30 plane crash at Muan airport in
11:22the southern region.
11:23Experts are still working on identifying other five corpses, but those 174 remains have been
11:30handed over to their relatives.
11:33Authorities explained that the bodies are being preserved in a temporary cold storage
11:36facility installed in a hangar of the airport to keep them until their families take them.
11:42On this incident, just two people, both flight attendants managed to survive after the plane
11:47crashed into a concrete wall.
11:49So far, both black boxes from flight 2216, the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice
11:55recorder have been found.
12:04Eleven accident investigators from the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board and
12:10eight joint investigators from the U.S. will be dispatched to the scene and begin the accident
12:15investigation starting today.
12:17Among the eight joint investigators from the U.S. side, one is from the U.S. Federal Aviation
12:23Administration, three are from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, and four from
12:28the aircraft manufacturer Boeing.
12:36Regarding the black box, the test and analysis center has completed cleaning the surface
12:41contamination and is currently checking its condition.
12:44However, it was found out that the flight data recorder has lost the connector of the
12:49data storage unit and the power supply unit.
12:52As a result, we are conducting a technical review to find a method to extract the data.
13:04On Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed a series of attacks on Ukrainian territory
13:09with high-precision weapons.
13:11Russian forces shelled a military airfield and an enterprise of the military industry.
13:15Moscow forces also used many of their vehicles.
13:18The Defense Ministry added that the Black Sea Fleet destroyed eight unmanned Ukrainian
13:21vessels while its anti-aircraft defenses shot down more than 103 drones.
13:27Ukraine claimed in a morning report that its forces shot down a Russian helicopter and
13:31called the operation a historic event.
13:39And the President of Russia Vladimir Putin sent a New Year's congratulations message
13:42to Latin American leaders who are allies of the country.
13:45Among the leaders congratulated by the Russian President are the President of Bolivia Luis
13:48Arce, the President of Brazil Luis Ignacio Da Silva, the President of Venezuela Nicolas
13:53Maduro and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel, as well as the Nicaraguan President Daniel
13:57Ortega.
13:58Putin also sent a telegram of congratulations to the leaders of the Cuban Revolution Raul
14:02Castro Cruz.
14:03The Russian Federation has traditionally maintained alliance relations with these countries and
14:07has recently stepped up its efforts to deepen cooperation with the region.
14:37Welcome back.
14:55Ecuador's National Electoral Council has rejected a request to discuss the irregularity that
14:59President Daniel Novoa intends to commit by staying in office while campaigning for re-election.
15:04The request made by Councilwoman Elena Najera demanded the Council to decide over the application
15:10of the law in question, which obliges the head of state to take an unpaid leave of absence
15:15during the campaign for re-election that starts on January 5.
15:18Novoa has failed to comply with Article 93 of the Democratic Code in order to avoid handing
15:23over the mandate to the Vice President Veronica Abad, as the Ecuadoran legal and constitutional
15:28framework require.
15:29In this context, after the Council's decision, Najera accused her colleagues of siding with
15:35the President at the expense of democratic principles.
15:40Yes, it is important that the National Electoral Council pronounces itself by means of a resolution
15:51so that from there the compliance or non-compliance with the norm may be derived.
15:56Having said this, I know that you come to these sessions having previously discussed
16:00that you already know what is going to happen, I already anticipated it in an interview on
16:05the radio, that in general, the only counselor that is and acts alone is me, since all of
16:11you manage yourselves through previous discussions, even the schedules you set are already agreed
16:16upon.
16:17So because of that, the citizens tell you and are aware of who is going to manage the
16:21electoral processes.
16:23Because it cannot be that here interpretations are given based on relationships with whichever
16:28government is in power.
16:34In this context, the National Electoral Council of Ecuador approved an almost 14-million-dollar
16:38fund for the electoral campaign.
16:40Resources will be distributed in an equitable manner for leading campaigns on press, radio,
16:44television, social media, among others.
16:47Activity scheduled for January 5 to February 6, 2025, for going to the polls where over
16:5213 million voters are eligible to elect the new Ecuadorian head of state.
16:57The 151 members of the National Assembly and 5 representatives to Parliament will be elected
17:01as well.
17:02And in other news, also in Ecuador, more than 40 social organizations hold the government
17:11of President Daniel Lobo as responsible for the disappearance of four minors in Guayaquil.
17:15After the four children went missing in Guayaquil, more than 40 organizations mobilized to demand
17:20justice from the government of Daniel Lobo.
17:23Also the social organizations pointed out that the children were playing football when
17:26the Ecuadorian armed forces forcibly arrested the minors.
17:29They also assured that there are other cases of disappearances and extrajudicial killings,
17:34which happened before the case of these four minors in Guayaquil, which occurred 22 days
17:39ago.
17:40In this context, also on Monday, the prosecutor ratified that the government is lying, assuring
17:50that three young men and the boy were not committing illegal activities at the moment
17:56they were detained by a military patrol.
17:58For this part, the military high command has tried to justify the disappearances and has
18:03described the detentions of the four minors as an incident.
18:06A hearing took place on Monday attended by several military chiefs and where the defense
18:10ministry's lawyer assured that the young men were stealing when they were arrested, while
18:15the prosecutor's office has assured that there is no evidence to confirm this.
18:18On the other hand, the hearing for the formulation of charges against 16 members of the armed
18:22forces for the alleged crime of forced disappearance is scheduled for this Tuesday at the Southern
18:27Criminal Judicial Unit in Guayaquil.
18:36We try to rectify to Mr. Vela that this is not an incident.
18:39It is not an incident.
18:40It is a serious violation of human rights against four children.
18:44It is an enforced disappearance.
18:46It is not an incident.
18:49The Venezuelan public prosecutor's office reported Monday having released 1,369 detainees
18:55who had participated in the violent riots and crimes committed after the July 28th elections.
19:01The entity explained that from December 26th to the 30th, 413 petitions had been assessed
19:07to study the cases of those involving acts of violence following the electoral process.
19:11These releases were granted under a process of respect and unrestricted observance of
19:16the principles and guarantees enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic in matters
19:20of human rights.
19:21Thus, the public prosecutor's office reaffirmed its commitment to the defense of peace, justice
19:26and the rights of Venezuelans.
19:33The Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela imposed a fine of $10 million on the social
19:38media TikTok in Latin America for being negligent in the control of content that endangers the
19:44integrity particularly of children and young people.
19:47The report with Madeline Garcia.
19:52The way was open to debate and control of the contents of TikTok's vital challenges.
19:59And the responsibility of the TikTok platform for the lack of timely control of the so-called
20:04viral challenges whose contents affect the health and lives of our children and adolescents
20:10has become evident.
20:14For this reason, the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice announced
20:23for the first time decisions against a social network for the protection of children and
20:27adolescents, victims of manipulation and violence of the videos posted on the platform, creating
20:32a precedent with TikTok.
20:37We impose on the company a fine equivalent to $10 million for not having implemented
20:41the necessary and adequate measures to prevent the dissemination of publications whose content
20:57is elusive to the so-called viral challenges in violation of the Venezuelan legal system.
21:10In 2024, two boys and a girl died when they submitted to viral challenges.
21:16These images correspond to the last goodbye of Erica, 12 years old, who lost her life
21:21when she consumed three pills as part of a TikTok viral challenge.
21:25Almost 800 minors put their lives at risk, according to figures from the scientific police.
21:32The Ministry of Education has a huge responsibility to study the issue, to give recommendations,
21:39to regulate the use of social networking technologies in schools, and also to educate
21:44not only our students, but also our teachers and the family in family schools.
21:56The last case was that of a young woman with a special condition.
21:59She was set on fire live on TikTok following the viral challenge, the whale.
22:0370 percent of her body suffered first-degree burns.
22:08I don't know what the TikTok is called, but my poor daughter couldn't defend herself.
22:18An awareness campaign about the danger of social networks compared to a whisper that
22:23kills and traps the minds of children and adolescents, inciting them to suicide, is
22:28promoted in Venezuela.
22:36The Supreme Court of Justice also ordered TikTok to install an office in Venezuela in
22:42order to monitor and control the contents.
22:48All this for TikTok to assume the legal responsibility of operating publicly, also establishing a
22:52fine of $10 million, which is done in relation to the victims of the families that unfortunately
22:57are in mourning as a result of these networks.
23:03Another of the five decisions is that a technical roundtable will be created with the victims'
23:08families and the money from the fine will be used to compensate the damages to those
23:12affected.
23:16President Nicolas Maduro had given an ultimatum to TikTok to restrict content that kills human
23:21beings.
23:22The network responded that it understood the concern but did not act.
23:26Now we'll have eight days to comply with the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice.
23:30If it does not do so, the highest judicial body will take action.
