00:33And some 13 German airports are closed due to a 24-hour nationwide strike summoned by
00:39the Verdi Trade Union to demand a pay rise.
00:47Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesurf Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:52We begin with the news.
01:06In Honduras, presidential pre-candidates Rixi Moncada, Salvador Nasralla and Nasri Yasfoula
01:11declared themselves as the winners of the primary elections in their respective parties.
01:16To this moment, the National Electoral Council of Honduras continues the vote counting as
01:21the three main political organizations, which are the National Party and the Liberal Party,
01:28decided their candidates.
01:29More than 5.8 million Hondurans were summoned to vote this Sunday in elections marked by
01:35technological advances and a continued process of democratic recovery after the country was
01:41submerged in a deep social crisis.
01:44The winning presidential pre-candidates in this first context will face each other in
01:48the general elections of November 30th, 2025, when the country will choose its next president,
01:55deputies and majors.
02:00At a press conference, the presidential candidate for the Liberty and Re-Foundation Party, Rixi
02:05Moncada, stated that she will initiate a new stage of dialogue and unity, not only in the
02:10party but also with various sectors in the country.
02:17We are going to initiate a new stage, this new stage is the stage of construction of
02:22unity within the party after this day of competition, but it is also the stage of construction of
02:27unity at national level, of dialogue with all sectors to continue the process of re-foundation.
02:34We remind the bipartisan coup and retrograde bipartisanship that violence has no future,
02:39that in 2009, through a violent act, they removed a president and the people defeated
02:44him in the streets.
02:45In 2013 they committed fraud and we defeated them, in 2017 we defeated them, in 2021 we
02:52defeated them and again in 2025 we are going to defeat them.
02:57Several Panamanian unions have been picketing to reject the social security fund bill passed
03:02by the National Assembly.
03:04In this context, the People United for Life Alliance announced the governmental plans
03:08to take over the NED's funds to privatize them with an individual system, which was
03:14the proposal of the Popular Movement.
03:16Likewise, the Alliance denounced legislators' manoeuvres in their attempt to both raise
03:22the retirement age and offer lower pensions that are far from being profitable.
03:27In addition, social movements warned that they had a list of over 15 possible sources
03:32where funds could be siphoned from the state.
03:39In Argentina, football fans will support mobilizations of the street artists to claim
03:44for a repair in their retirement pension and against the Malays' government's adjustment
03:49policies.
03:50Every Wednesday, retired citizens claim their rights and protest against government policies.
03:56These demonstrations have been severely repressed by the federal police, under orders from the
04:01Ministry of Security Patricia Bullrich.
04:04What started as a gesture of solidarity from the Chacarita club fans turned into a self-convocation
04:10that promises to take the next mobilization to historic levels.
04:14The mobilization is scheduled for next Wednesday at 5pm at the front of the National Congress
04:20and has the support of leading figures of Argentine football and the best-known teams.
04:29In Peru, firefighting crews tried to extinguish a fire that has been burning for six days
04:34in Lima.
04:35Brigadier Carlos Malpica of the General Volunteer Fire Department of Peru reported that the
04:41fire is 90% under control, stressing that work is continuing to get to the heart of
04:46the incident.
04:47He also said that seven buildings were affected and five had partial collapses and that the
04:53firefighting work has consumed two million gallons of water.
04:57The fire was originated six days ago in an unlicensed toy and packaged food store in
05:02a building.
05:03The incident left 100 victims and 20 personnel affected by the smoke and toxic gases.
05:26In Costa Rica, the eruption of the Puas volcano caused the temporary closure of the national
05:31park surrounding the geological phenomenon in the northern province of Alajuela.
05:36After two constant eruptions in the crater's mouth and sea, which caused a 300-metre column
05:42of gases and particles, authorities decided to temporarily close the national park to
05:47protect visitors and staff working in it.
05:50Experts argue that the decrease in the level of hyperacid lake in the crater enhances the
05:56existence of particles among the gases.
05:58The National Emergency Commission also urged authorities to intensify security actions
06:03and evaluate internal resources in case of an emergency situation.
06:12In Greece, a Mediterranean monk seal is ready to be released to wildlife after less than
06:16two months of being found orphaned and struggling for her life south of the country.
06:21The specimen, named Konstantina, is one of dozens of Mediterranean monk seals nursed
06:27back to health and released into the wild by Greece's MOM, a charity dedicated to the
06:33care and protection of the rare marine mammal whose population had dwindled to the point
06:39of facing extinction.
06:41For decades they were hunted, contributing to a major population decline that led the
06:46International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN, to list them as critically endangered.
06:53In recent years, the species climbed down one notch on the IUCN's list of threatened
07:00species to endangered and, about a year ago, improved one step further to vulnerable.
07:12After the protection programs and public awareness began and society gradually began to change
07:17its stance towards nature and animals, the population began to recover.
07:22As a result in recent years, from critically endangered it dropped one category, so the
07:28status of the species improved to endangered.
07:31And recently, about a year ago, when we as a specialized body made the assessment for
07:36the IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature, it is now vulnerable, in other
07:42words, it dropped one more category, which means that it is in danger of extinction,
07:48but not to the extent it was before.
07:51The status of the population has improved greatly.
07:58Among all these actions, there was also care, which means helping animals that would essentially
08:03otherwise be condemned to die.
08:06Through care we help them return to their natural environment, to get well and then
08:10return, contributing to the population's recovery.
08:15And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
08:19TELUS at English, where you will find news in different formats, news updates and more.
08:23We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:36Welcome back to From the South.
09:00In Palestine, the people of Gaza condemned Israel's decision to cut off the electricity
09:04supply in the territory.
09:06The event occurred on Sunday night, after the Israeli State Minister of Energy Eli
09:11Cohen ordered the suspension of the electric power service in the Palestinian enclave.
09:16The announcement of the power cut coincides with the release of documents revealing the
09:21Zionist regime's intentions to intensify its illegal military operations in Gaza.
09:26Various humanitarian agencies have stated that the disruption of power supplies severely
09:31damages essential infrastructure in the territory and could have devastating consequences.
09:42We sleep without electricity, wash our clothes by hand, cook with wood, and there is no gas
09:46for cooking.
09:49Now our lives depend on wood, fire and candles.
09:54We went back to 50 years ago to using candles.
09:59Israel cut off electricity since the beginning of the war and announced cutting off water
10:03and electricity to the Gaza Strip.
10:06Consequently, we have been living without electricity for more than 15 months since
10:10Israel declared war on Gaza.
10:13The alternative is a generator in the street.
10:16There is no other alternative and the cost is high.
10:20An Israeli non-governmental organization condemns a collective punishment for Palestinians'
10:25The desalination facility in Deir el-Balakh was providing 18,000 cubic meters of water
10:38before the cut off of electricity.
10:41So last night the electricity was shut off and the plant stopped functioning.
10:46Today it's expected to start running on backup generators and will be able to provide
10:50only 2,500 cubic meters of water.
10:54Israel is saying that it's cutting off the supply as a form of pressure, as a tactic
11:01to press Hamas to continue in phase 1 of the ceasefire arrangement to release more hostages.
11:09From Gisha's perspective, this is collective punishment.
11:12The stopping of humanitarian aid, the deliberate stopping of supply of electricity, of water,
11:18of medicine to the civilian population amounts to a war crime.
11:22It is Israel's obligation to supply these things to the civilian population.
11:30The Hamas-Palestinian Resistance Movement confirmed that several talks have been held
11:35with the U.S. on the ceasefire deal in Qatar.
11:38The senior Hamas leader told the U.S. delegation that they do not oppose the release of prisoners.
11:43Lately, Israel had reported to be preparing for negotiations so that it sent Monday a
11:49delegation to Doha to discuss on the deal.
11:52Overall, the conversations aimed at moving to the next stage of the deal, which could
11:56pave the way for ending the war.
11:58However, the first phase of the ceasefire deal ended last week.
12:03Since then, Israel has imposed a full seizure on all humanitarian aid entered in Palestine.
12:14The United States claims to expect substantial progress in Ukraine talks to be held in Saudi
12:18Arabia on Tuesday.
12:20This has been stated by Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Whitkoff, on Monday.
12:25Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to arrive in the kingdom while the U.S.
12:30delegation made up of Whitkoff and Secretary of State Michael Rubio hopes to close the
12:34mineral deal as well as move forward in a peace agreement and ceasefire.
12:40For his part, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that what the U.S. and everyone
12:45are waiting for is a definitive sign of Ukraine's desire for peace.
12:52U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that U.S. aid will cancel the majority of
13:00its programs.
13:01In his ex-account, Rubio stated that after a six-week review, they are officially cancelling
13:0683% of programs at U.S. aid.
13:09According to the U.S. diplomat, the 5,200 contracts that are now cancelled spent tens
13:15of billions of dollars in ways that did not serve the core national interest of the United
13:20States.
13:21He also added that in consultation with Congress, they intend for the remaining 18% of programs
13:27they are keeping to now be administered more effectively under the State Department.
13:33The U.S. Aid Agency was created in 1961 to distribute humanitarian aid through international
13:40programs in 120 countries.
13:49In the United States, five people were injured after a small plane crashed in the parking
13:53lot of a retirement community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
13:57The accident occurred at about 3.18 p.m. local time when the plane, a single-engine Beechcraft
14:03Bonanza, crashed into the Brethren Village retirement community in Manham Township, said
14:09Scott Little, leader of the fire department, on Sunday night.
14:14He also detailed that five people aboard the aircraft were injured and were taken to local
14:19hospitals.
14:20About a dozen vehicles were damaged in the incident, while the building of the retirement
14:24center was not structurally damaged and no injuries were reported on the ground.
14:34A small six-seater aircraft, a Beechcraft Bonanza, crashed here on the property of Brethren
14:41Village.
14:43Five passengers were on board.
14:47All five passengers were transported by local EMS agencies to local hospitals for treatment.
14:53No structural damage occurred on the Brethren Village property.
14:58We did have multiple vehicles catch on fire due to the aircraft.

15:23Welcome back to From the South.
15:42In Canada, the Liberal Party announced that economist Mark Carney is set to succeed Prime
15:47Minister Justin Trudeau amid political chaos in the country.
15:51In the party's internal elections, Carney received a broad support of 85.9% of the party's
15:58membership.
15:59Carney will replace Trudeau, who announced his resignation last January, until a general
16:04election will be held.
16:06On March 24th, the Canadian Parliament will resume its work and will have to give a vote
16:11of confidence to the new Prime Minister.
16:13The next parliamentary elections in Canada are scheduled for October 20th, but it is
16:18suspected that Carney could announce early elections.
16:21This transition comes amid trade differences between Washington and Ottawa.
16:31The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country.
16:39Think about it.
16:41If they succeeded, they would destroy our way of life.
16:47We didn't ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the
16:52gloves.
16:53So the Americans, they should make no mistake, in trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.
17:06Greenland calls early parliamentary elections for March 11th amid political chaos.
17:11Since taking office six weeks ago, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his
17:16interest in Greenland, rich in minerals and located along strategic sea lines in the North
17:22Atlantic.
17:23According to a poll, 85% of Greenlanders do not want to be part of the United States,
17:29although the majority are in favour of independence.
17:32Amid concerns about foreign interference and demands that Greenlanders must control their
17:36own destiny, the island's Prime Minister, Mute Boudup Ejede, called early parliamentary
17:43elections for March 11th.
17:48Because we don't want a colonial side twice again from another nation.
17:57So we have all the time said that we want to have our business with other countries,
18:05but not because we live in the democratic country.
18:10And we mean that it will be unrespectful just to do that.
18:18Some 13 German airports, including the Frankfurt and Munich hubs, are closed to stop as a result
18:24of a 24-hour nationwide strike summoned by the Verdi trade union to demand a pay rise.
18:30Service workers, ground staff and aviation security comprise Verdi so that they are rallying
18:36for sealing a collective wage deal for nearly 2.5 million public sector workers.
18:42So far, the picket line persists due to the fact that a second round of pay talks failed.
18:47The federal government and local municipalities ensured Verdi's proposals are not financially
18:53viable, rejecting an 8% pay hike, higher bonuses and three additional days off.
18:59Therefore, operations have been disrupted at main German airports as Frankfurt, Munich,
19:05Stuttgart, Hamburg, among others.
19:13We want 8% for the trainees, 200 euros more.
19:17It's about time bonuses, it's about a working time account, in other words, the ability
19:22to organize your own working hours.
19:25The employer isn't doing anything about it.
19:28He really doesn't want to give anything.
19:30He says the budget is empty, that they can't do that.
19:34We're even heading for a pay freeze for a very long time of 36 months.
19:40We will add another one here before the third round of negotiations and, of course, this
19:45will be across all airports here in Germany.
19:48It is an industry strike day, and we have also coordinated with the other airports,
19:52so to speak, to send a very clear signal that an offer must be made by the third negotiation
19:57date.
20:00In the north-eastern Upper Nile state of South Sudan, clashes broke out between forces allied
20:06to the President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar, posing a threat to
20:11the 2018 governmental alliance.
20:14Last week, an armed youth militia attacked the Sudanese armed forces, from which the
20:18police arrested two government ministers and a deputy army chief ally to Machar.
20:24In this context, a United Nations helicopter was shot Friday amid a rescue mission, killing
20:29a crew member.
20:30In response to the incident, the chair of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights
20:35in the country, Yasmeen Sukeh, urged for peace as she warned that the nation was at the brink
20:41of a civil war.
20:42Meanwhile, the US administration withdrew Sunday all its non-emergency staff from South
20:47Sudan amid the ongoing confrontations.
20:55Gabon's interim president, Briz Oligi Ngema, will face three challengers in presidential
21:01polls, which are set to take place on April 12.
21:05The official list was published by the interior minister on Sunday, including his main challenger,
21:10ally-in-claw Billy Nsi, by, in addition to former executive of the Gabonese Democratic
21:17Party, Dr. Stéphane Germain-Iloque, and lawyer and tax inspector Joseph Lapensi-Essingon.
21:25Nineteen others were rejected, but given 72 hours in which to lodge an appeal with the
21:32constitutional court.
21:33Gema came to power in a 2023 military coup that ended in the long-standing rule of his
21:40predecessor Ali Bongo and his family.
21:43All four are running as independents, with campaign in Kerala to begin on March 29.
21:55Internationally acclaimed South African playwright and actor Athol Fugard died on Sunday at age
22:0892.
22:09Fugard was widely known as an anti-apartheid figure and left behind a powerful legacy of
22:15works like Master Harold and The Boys, and sees where Bansi is that works that have shaped
22:22theatre in the African country.
22:24The South African government confirmed his death by stating that the nation had lost
22:29one of its greatest literary and theatrical icons.
22:32President Cyril Ramaphosa described him as the moral conscience of a generation.
22:42You know, during the 40 years of apartheid, I was a very blinkered writer.
22:47I had one focus, which was to try and say as much as I could about that terrible system
22:55and what it was doing to people.
22:56Now, of course, that is past history.
23:01And the Captain's Tiger, I suppose, represents an attempt on my side to use the new freedoms
23:09that are there for us artists in the new South Africa.
23:12Basic drives in human nature.
