00:00The International Criminal Court issued international arrest warrants for Israel's Prime Minister
00:15Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Joao Afghalan for war crimes.
00:25In Mexico, a new migrant caravan left Tapachula City in the state of Chiapas, headed for the
00:30center-north of the country to cross over the border to the United States.
00:39And the Russian president stated the Ukraine conflict has acquired a global character after
00:44the recent missile attacks launched by Ukrainian military with U.S.-made long-range weaponry.
00:57Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:02To begin with, Denise, stay with us.
01:20After months of deliberation, the International Criminal Court, ICC, issued international
01:25arrest warrants for Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister
01:29Joao Afghalan for war crimes.
01:32The warrants, announced on Thursday, were issued for crimes against humanity and war
01:36crimes committed against the Gazan population from October 8, 2023 until at least May 20
01:43of this year following the court's rejection of two Israeli challenges to its jurisdiction.
01:49The warrants come some six months after the ICC's chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, applied
01:55for them and later urged the court's judges to urgently rule on this request.
02:00In addition, in a separate statement, the court announced that Hamas' Mohamed Daif
02:04was also subject to international arrest.
02:12Regarding the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Ghaland, the ICC
02:17stated that the chamber found reasonable grounds to believe that each bear criminal responsibility
02:24for the following crimes as co-perpetrators for committing the acts jointly with others.
02:29The war crime of starvation as a method of warfare and the crimes against humanity of
02:34murder, persecution and other inhumane acts.
02:38And the chamber also found reasonable grounds to believe that Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Ghaland
02:43each bear criminal responsibility as civilian superiors for the war crime of intentionally
02:49directing an attack against the civilian population.
03:00In this context, the European Union's foreign affairs chief, Joseph Borrell, stated the
03:04arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court are binding and should be implemented
03:10as by all state members.
03:16It is not a political decision, it is a decision of a court, of a court of justice, an international
03:25court of justice, and the decision of the court has to be respected and implemented.
03:34So I take note of the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants from
03:42Prime Minister Netanyahu, the former Minister of Defence, Mr. Ghaland, and the Hamas leaders.
03:50This decision is a binding decision and all states, all state parties of the court, which
04:03include all members of the European Union, are binding to implement this court decision.
04:15Israeli occupied forces mounted two raids in the Gaza Strip, killing 88 Palestinians
04:21so far.
04:22In this regard, Israeli airstrikes on a five-floor building claimed at least 22 civilian lives,
04:28including 10 children in the Sheikh Radwan town in Gaza.
04:32In the aftermath, rescue teams work intensively to recover bodies from under the rubble.
04:37Likewise, on Thursday, Israeli forces hit a residential area in Beit Lahya, killing
04:42at least 66 people, most of them women and children.
04:46The death toll adds to the over 44,757 Palestinians killed by the Zionist regime since the onset
04:54of its genocide in October 2023.
05:01The airstrike targeted four floors and a large number of corpses and injured had been transferred.
05:06We saw a headless woman here and we are conducting a recovery process.
05:10We are moving her body to the hospital, while we have been trying to recover her head for
05:14over an hour, but due to the lack of capabilities, we haven't managed to recover it.
05:20The Israeli army continues its escalation of violence throughout the Middle East with
05:24warplanes from the Zionist regime issuing new rounds of force evacuation threats for
05:30Lebanon's southern Tahrir district amid heavy bombardments.
05:34Precisely, the military bombed Al-Hawsh village, as well as a building in the city, shortly
05:39after ordering residents to leave.
05:42While no injured were reported, the attack on the edification located on Abu Dhabi street
05:47caused severe material damage.
05:49In this context, as the Israeli forces continue targeting Lebanon, the regime's Arabic-language
05:54spokesperson informed on Thursday they would be bombing the neighborhoods of Hared Reik
06:01and Hadath in Dahije, the capital's southern suburbs, threatening Beirut residents for
06:05the third time in 24 hours.
06:13In this context, amid Israel's military attacks in Palestine and Lebanon, the Zionist army
06:18keeps targeting the historical city of Palmyra in Syria, killing 36 people and wounding more
06:24than 50 others.
06:25According to the latest toll issued by the nation's defense ministry on Wednesday, the
06:30most recent airstrikes on the Al-Tanf area of the central city are reportedly the deadliest
06:36in Syria in a year.
06:38In this regard, the country's foreign ministry condemned in a statement the brutal Israeli
06:42aggression which reflects the continuing crimes of Zionism against the countries of the region
06:48and their people.
06:53The United States Senate has rejected three resolutions introduced by Bernie Sanders to
06:58block the sale of certain weapons to Israel to continue its attacks on the Gaza Strip.
07:04Seventy-nine senators voted against resolutions calling for a ban on the sale of tank ammunition,
07:10high-explosive mortar ammunition and the sale of kits to transform unguided bombs into precision-guided
07:17weapons.
07:18Sanders denounced that these are all weapons that have been used with devastating effects
07:24against civilians in Gaza and Lebanon.
07:26The senator defined the humanitarian crisis in Palestine as apocalyptic, assuring that
07:31what is happening is being done with U.S. weapons and with money contributed by the
07:36government.
07:37Mr. President, I would also point out that poll after poll shows that a strong majority
07:47of the American people oppose sending more weapons and military aid to fund Netanyahu's
07:55war machine.
07:57And I would also mention, interestingly enough, that according to a poll commissioned by J
08:04Street, this is a pro-Israel organization, 62 percent of Jewish Americans support withholding
08:14weapons shipments to Israel until Netanyahu agrees to an immediate ceasefire.
08:21And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
08:25TELUSilEnglish where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
08:29We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:44Welcome back to From the South.
08:49In Mexico, a new migrant caravan left Tapachula City in the state of Chiapas, headed for the
08:54center north of the country to cross over the border to the United States.
08:58The caravan included at least 1,500 migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia,
09:04Haiti, among other nations.
09:06The sixth group departed on early Wednesday from the Bicentennial Park, a usual migrating
09:12meeting point.
09:14Some travelers expressed their willingness to reach the U.S. border before Donald Trump
09:18takes office on January 20th, 2025, due to the likely tightening of migration policies.
09:27We had to leave in this caravan because we ran out of money.
09:30We didn't have a penny.
09:31That's why we couldn't afford to pay the bills here, as we didn't have the needed resources
09:35to stay here.
09:36We need to keep moving forward to cross over the border and, well, thank God this caravan
09:40materialized.
09:41Right now, we just hope that we all get there safe and sound, with God's help.
09:46In reference to the recent G20 summit that took place in Brazil, the President of Mexico,
09:51Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighted during her morning press conference that the foremost
09:55affair tackled at the gathering was the call for peace made by several countries.
10:03In this case, the G20 summit held in Brazil had many guests, invited countries not belonging
10:10to the G20.
10:11Therefore, it can be described as a multilateral meeting, as many countries came.
10:20So I think it's paramount to call for peace at this crucial time.
10:25Fortunately, Mexico was not the only country urging for it, but also many countries, namely
10:32from Latin America, as well as other regions worldwide, advocated for peace.
10:40Uruguay's presidential elections come to an end on Sunday, November 24th, and the people
10:47will finally elect a new president and vice president.
10:51The presidential candidate for the broad front, Yamandú Orsi, assured to have the governability
10:56to promote the transformations that the country needs as he closed his campaign for Sunday's
11:02ballots on Wednesday.
11:03On the other hand, the presidential candidate for National Party, Álvaro Delgado, also
11:08called on Uruguayans to think about who they would want to be in charge if there were a
11:13new crisis.
11:21We have the Senate that is ready to go out and do what we have to do, to legislate, but
11:27also, and more importantly, to govern in the way that our country needs.
11:34We have the conditions to take charge of our country, and we have the conditions to continue
11:40to work on the basis of agreements, but also, with a firm and determined attitude, to carry
11:47out the transformations that the country needs.
11:58I feel that I am prepared, that I have the experience, which is non-transferable, but
12:04also that I am tested, and that I have a team that supports me enormously to give Uruguay
12:09guarantees in stormy waters or in calm waters, to give it direction, to give it protection,
12:16to give it security, to give it certainty, which is what Uruguayans want.

12:46Welcome back to From the South.
13:09Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday the Ukraine-Russia conflict has acquired
13:14a global character after the recent missile attacks on the Kursk and Bryansk regions launched
13:20by Ukrainian military with US-made long-range weaponry.
13:24This way, Putin stressed, it is impossible to use such weapons throughout Russian territory
13:29without specialists from the countries where they were manufactured in.
13:33In this regard, he alerted the US government is pushing the world towards a global-scale
13:38conflict, stating it became the force that destroyed the international security system.
13:45In addition, the Russian head of state confirmed the successful November 21st strike on a Ukrainian
13:50military-industrial facility using the latest Russian medium-range system, Oreshink, which
13:56existing missile defence systems are not able to intercept.
14:00The Russian President assured his country prefers peaceful means, but is prepared for
14:05any development of events.
14:10We consider ourselves entitled to use our weapons against the military facilities of
14:14those countries that allow their weapons to be used against our installations, and if
14:19there is an escalation of aggressive actions, we will respond with equal determination and
14:23proportion.
14:26The Australian government on November 21st sent to Parliament a bill to prevent children
14:30under 16 from accessing social networks such as Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram and X, among others.
14:36The regulation endorses on digital platforms, and not on parents or young people, the obligation
14:42to take reasonable measures.
14:51Social media has a social responsibility.
14:54We know they can and should do better to address harms on their platforms.
15:01That is why we are making big changes to hold platforms to account for user safety.
15:07The Online Safety Amendment Social Media Minimum Age Bill 2024 will amend the Online Safety
15:13Act 2021 by introducing a minimum age of 16 to have an account on age-restricted social
15:21media platforms, protecting young Australians at a critical stage of their development.
15:27The bill puts the onus on social media platforms, not parents or young people, to take reasonable
15:33steps to ensure fundamental protections are in place.
15:37This is about protecting young people, not punishing or isolating them, and letting parents
15:43know where in their corner when it comes to supporting their children's health and well-being.
15:59The Meteorological Office in Iceland notifies the eruption of a volcano on the Reykjanes
16:04peninsula at the southwest of the country, where several volcanoes are aligned.
16:09The Icelandic Meteorological Office notifies that although no infrastructures are affected,
16:14precautions are being taken due to the volcano eruption, evacuating the fishing village of
16:19Grindavík, which is located in the vicinity of the crater.
16:23Although volcanic activity had been dormant for eight centuries, it reappeared in 2021.
16:29Iceland has 33 active volcanoes, the largest number of them in Europe, and the recent eruption
16:35marked the seventh by this volcano in 2024.
16:43A severe storm hit the northwestern United States with high winds and downpours, claiming
16:48at least two lives.
16:50The deadly phenomenon, which has been called a bomb cyclone, led to widespread power outages
16:56for some 530,000 locals.
16:59The two deaths reportedly occurred on Tuesday evening after trees fell at a homeless camp
17:04in Lighthoop Wood and at a house in Bellevue, eastern Seattle.
17:09In response to the situation, the Weather Protection Center issued risk warnings of
17:14heavy rainfall and hurricane-force winds throughout Friday.
17:24The French government has issued orange alerts for 54 out of the 96 metropolitan departments
17:30for the snowfalls and gusts that the Cayetano storm is already bringing about.
17:35The Meteo France agency has set the second-highest alert level in the country as a result of
17:40snowfalls and black ice hitting the northern region.
17:44Furthermore, experts forecast that likely gusts of up to 100 km per hour will occur
17:50with particular impacts on the Atlantic coast.
17:53In view of the impending landfall of Cayetano and the worsening of weather conditions, local
17:58authorities took preventive measures banning the circulation of heavy loads and establishing
18:03a speed limit of 20 km per hour on highways.
18:19With films, scripts, posters and film in production, the Cuban capital will host, from December
18:245th to 15th, the 45th edition of Havana Film Festival, the international festival of Latin
18:30American cinema.
18:31The director of the event, Tania Delgado Fernández, pointed out that it will contemplate a wide
18:37range of works from 42 countries with a special representation of Latin American audiovisual
18:42creations.
18:44She also mentioned that the space will be dedicated to Argentinian cinema, its evolution
18:49and current situation.
18:51The festival receives films that have been screened at other events around the world,
18:56but it is also the time to premiere regional cinema wonders.
19:08The festival this year will not disappoint us, and as I was saying, we have a wide range
19:14of themes.
19:16Alberto, the main responsible for the organization, said it already, he mentioned in his interview
19:22that there are different themes, but that this year is the same as last year.
19:29Themes such as children and youth, family issues, and violence, are recurring in recent
19:34years in Latin America.
19:38And that has a reason, they see the reality, they approach reality from different angles.
19:44I cannot fail to mention that there are also very important historical themes.
19:50The first two episodes of the series 100 Years of Solitude, inspired by the work of Gabriel
19:56García Márquez, will have their world premiere in Cuba at the Havana Film Festival.
20:01The director of the event, Tania Delgado, announced that the screening of the series
20:05is scheduled for December 6 at the Central Yara Cinema.
20:09In this sense, the audiovisual adaptation is considered an unprecedented production
20:13in Latin America.
20:18We have come to the end of this year's Brief, but you can find this and many other stories
