00:00Watch the game again, then tiny. This is Macklin celebrating. You're listening to signing guru
00:05Thanks, Matt
00:07Game winner the other night. Yeah, I saw it. Whoo. You always have to try to one-up me
00:13Let's welcome in Willard
00:16Don't change we've had a great time when he comes in when you guys come in
00:21He has to go back to his Draymond, you know, I'm gonna be a bully
00:25He's not a bully. It's not true, but just you can love each other and they could be here to it's all love
00:30Well much like dream on it
00:31He knows who to go at and who not to go at it's cuz he's famously afraid of Mark Willard
00:42Intimidation I wasn't used to find out Zack Beattie was born in Toronto. Yeah
00:48Yeah, and then somebody said Tristan Thompson. Well, what about Tristan Thompson? I told you also from Toronto
00:55No doubt, but you know Eddie Johnson today terrific talking about
01:00Charles Oakley and my second favorite part of the interview was every time that Steine tried to do a reset I had three fouls
01:08Eddie won't stop and he's gonna he's gonna answer and he's gonna talk and so Stein was like and Eddie and
01:18He's got a great hesitation
01:20So I go for the fake and sure enough he's
01:31Warriors at Hawks tonight at chase 49ers at Lambeau Field Sunday. I
01:39Hope I
01:40Hope 49er fans
01:43This weekend are doing what they have habitually been doing the last few years
01:48You have to go to this stadium
01:51How to go my god, you've been there. I've been there. Oh, wow, not for a 49er game
01:57But I was for a Packers Eagles game. Oh
02:00Even better. Yeah, um, and I'm telling you man
02:06There's nothing like it these people
02:09They're already there. I wouldn't be surprised. They're setting up shop right now. It's Wednesday
02:14I have never like I've never seen tailgating like that. What about the old-school benches or seats?
02:21It's like old-school Stanford. No, I mean and we were we were in the stands
02:25It felt pretty like it's been updated some pretty normal out there and it's not
02:30Like now's a great time to go cuz it's not quite gonna snow yet
02:33I'm just quite this just in first snow of the year expected tomorrow. Oh, but two to five inches, but not this weekend, right?
02:41Yeah, not this weekend. A little dusting tomorrow, just to get the stars in the air.
02:45Just all that that feels like it rained. Yeah, right, but I'm telling you man to drive through the streets of that neighborhood
02:51It is exactly what people joke about like it the houses are empty. The businesses are closed. That's how it should be
02:58That's it
02:59There's a Packer game and so 49er fans who have been doing a lot of this lately traveling around to road trips do this
03:05Wow, do this one if you got one in you, I mean, it's definitely a stadium
03:09Yeah, for sure we talked about how many Niner fans and I don't know if we've all done the Vivid Seats homework yet on
03:15What percentage of the crowd will be Niner fans?
03:29I'll also say this like I mean you look everybody go do the game how you want to do it
03:33These are the nicest human beings in the face of the earth
03:36Now you can wear the other jersey in your phone. You're not gonna come in there and get the true trash talk
03:41You're gonna come in as a writer gays. You had to be ready. They want to do is have you eat their cheese?
03:46That's it. They're just like please
03:49cheese curds
03:51Sit down next to us and let's talk about your life and then there'll be a game later as you're saying this
03:56I'm trying to rack my brain of the fan fight videos and I cannot remember
04:01My video great look and seek these out, but that's real occasionally on the late Sunday night. It's like let's see
04:12Great call if the Niners win 24 21 it's like on their way out. They'll be like, oh, yeah, you'll beat us like that
04:19Yeah, there's your fight. That's a Wisconsin fight
04:22I made a step I'm not co-sale cuz you guys do a great job and I'm looking for
04:27But I missed you guys yesterday, but this is my two cents on the Niners
04:31Are you really telling me Debo Samuel is is this is what he's come to for him to where he can't make any
04:38Contributions and I say all that to say is Kyle likes to attack the middle of the field
04:43There the rats on the table and opposing divs defenses have figured that out and they're making it difficult
04:50They miss kiddo, but even when they had kiddo, I just went on a tirade
04:54There was something missing cuz I said kiddo can give you more but he was blocking all I say that to say is Willard
05:00I think Kyle needs to look in the mirror and just
05:04Honestly say do I got a trick it up a little bit not go away from the principles
05:09But I got to do something different because I can't believe
05:13Collectively this offense now with McCaffrey after eight quarters is what it is. I think that's fair
05:19I think anything's fair right now
05:21Look, it's an incredibly frustrating season and things haven't played out
05:24but let me let me throw something at you guys and you can help us start our
05:28Conversation because I think as is the norm the further you get away from the frustrating loss
05:33Different perspectives come into play and and so look all the frustration with play calling and Shanahan
05:39I get it
05:40I share it all of that
05:41But let me throw some numbers or numbers or numbers or numbers at you the best and you you tell me if
05:48If this changes the way you think about
05:51Kyle Shanahan and play calling numbers are numbers and numbers. Thank you. And these are my number. All right
05:59this year 49ers offense is
06:02in yards per drive
06:05number two in the NFL
06:08points per drive number 10 in the NFL
06:12punts per drive
06:14Number 32 in other words, I get it best in the NFL
06:19plays per drive number four
06:22scores per drive number four drive success rate number 10, they are at minimum top 10 and
06:30Usually top five in all of those categories now
06:34TDs per red zone trip number 27
06:38Ha points per red zone trip number 26, I say all this to simply ask the question
06:45Let's put it out there to everybody
06:48Are we overreacting?
06:50Is the Niner offense actually?
06:53Still really good and we are spotlighting what clearly matters, but we are spotlighting
07:01little portions of the field or
07:04Portions of the game that have not gone their way. It's not to say they're as good as last year
07:10they're clearly not can I can I maybe they're not as far behind last year as
07:15It currently looks okay numbers do like shout out Michael Smith at Jamil Hill numbers do lie
07:21I believe that I was in sales. Yeah, they do but I would say watching with my the two naked eyes
07:28Those numbers where they're lower in the red zone
07:31Supersede the good ones because that's what I feel like. We're watching starting week one. We were all at the game six field goals
07:38like
07:40Got off on the wrong foot. Sure. Okay, that's fair. But let me just further the question
07:46What we've been talking about for two days is Kyle's play calling doesn't work anymore
07:51Doesn't get you down
07:53No, it gets you down. Yeah, we're acting like it does so right so that I guess that's what I'm asking
08:00Is it fair for us to kind of go on that premise based on there is quite a bit of data
08:05That would suggest this isn't as bad as we feel it is right now
08:10What was the second one you the first one was yards per drive points per drive their 10th in the league
08:15And then what was the third one pumps per drive their number 32 other words?
08:20I think it's good. It's it's the next one that that I think's interesting plays per drive. They're for fourth
08:25I don't think that's a great stat
08:28maybe we looked at it before the show and we had talked about this previously where they had to
08:3314 play drives in the game and Kyle actually had the the quote Monday about he had never
08:38experienced a 14 play drive with eight plays across the 50 that didn't end in a field goal a
08:44Misfield goal a turnover or a touchdown they punted it was 14 plays
08:48Yeah, and you ended up honey and the second 14 play drive
08:51They did score Juwan Jennings with the three-yard the bootleg off the play action
08:56I'm trying to practice for Cosell so they were one for two on 14 play drives the one question
09:01I have more than a bootleg. I don't know if you have
09:05Well, yeah, shout out Akash who covers the 49ers. He's the one who tweet. Yes the number
09:09I'm curious about in light of all that is how many drives?
09:12Where are they in total drives?
09:14Because it feels to me you're like total number of drive because all those numbers are game all those numbers are per
09:20Drive, and if they have the fewest number of drives in the league, then those numbers to me become less impactful because oh
09:28You don't possess the ball as often as other teams because you you do have these long drives where you run it
09:34And you use a lot of clock that I don't want to do. I don't have that
09:38Exactly. I would argue these numbers are the ones that that are a little bit more helpful
09:44It's kind of like oh, he's leading the league in passing. Well, he hasn't has by week yet
09:49You know what I mean? So like let's coming down. What are your yards per game?
09:53This is I I totally get where you're coming from dibs
09:56And it's a very fair question, and I don't have the number I'll try and find it
09:59But these are simply telling you I think how you're performing when you get the football well the yards per drive
10:06They're second yes that tell I could be wrong
10:10You just ask me what it sounds like a lot of first downs
10:12Well, it also sounds like maybe they don't start with great field position maybe and their special team sucks. Yeah, let's start there
10:19maybe
10:21Drives than other teams at their own 10
10:2515 I don't know
10:26They are it's working till you get to the red zone fair
10:30So is it wrong for me or anybody to question well if it's good enough to go up the field which it is
10:36Why why is there a disconnect all of a sudden?
10:39Who's the maestro of the play call it or do we say it's the player no?
10:44Off by the way an average drive start they start at 30 so there are 11 teams that start better than that
10:50That's not bad, and gosh your questions beyond fair. It's beyond fair, and it's probably like anything
10:56It's a consequence of a bunch of stuff
10:58I mean Christian McCaffrey is their red zone weapon now the best one and he has not been there
11:03And we by our eyes think that the last two weeks. He's still not a hundred percent
11:08Jordan Mason did some not so great things in the red zone at times this year
11:13Whatever like it's on all of them. It's on the play calling the players the offensive line
11:17I think has has been just weaker than it than it normally is there's also got to be some randomness to it
11:24Oh, there has to be some just like what you know
11:26I don't know if it will penalties it because red zone drives
11:29They have old one holding penalty destroys the red zone true doubt you know so and I found the answer on my own
11:37And thank you for the encouragement welcome 30th in total drives
11:41The Niners have had more drives than only, Kansas City, okay, and Arizona, so maybe
11:49Both good teams, but both first-place teams
11:52So there's there's second to last
11:55102 total drives oh
11:58No, maybe that's because one of the reasons is
12:02He loves to win that time of possession battle. He does I'd also say
12:08Maybe and this could you know because I imagine it's pretty close actually of that that list maybe you can
12:14further that point dibs, but like
12:17When you have a lead and the Niners have had a bunch of them in the fourth quarter. This has not gone well
12:22But you're trying to shorten the game you're trying to lay it out right you're not trying to have a lot of drives
12:28And yeah to your point Houston's number one with 128 total drives in 11 games, so that's about 11 times per game
12:36What are the Bengals for example?
12:38Cincinnati is number seven yeah, cuz their hair is on fire all the time right like the other team has 40
12:45They have 32. We're freaking out the fourth quarter goes bananas that feels like what Cincinnati does yeah, and also a team like
12:54Indianapolis for example their number two in drives, but they're also
12:57Number one in turnover percentage, so you're gonna give it away
13:01Usually pretty quick right and then the other team does this and you're gonna get it back
13:05So I don't know if that's a good or a bad. I don't either. I can't tell I don't either
13:09You're listening to 95 7 the game KGM ZFM and HD 1 San Francisco
13:13Always live on the free Odyssey app twitching YouTube powered by first NorCal credit union. Yeah, I I
13:20Don't know what to make of that either for me the big one is points per drive
13:24And I'm looking at their number right now, and I can't be that great number ten two point three four points per drive number ten
13:31and number one is
13:33Detroit makes sense almost three points per drive. They get a touchdown every time. They're two point nine three
13:39Yeah, feels like yeah, cuz they're yeah, they don't necessarily play fast or slow, but they score just about every time
13:46And they're scoring actually they're scoring percentage is not number one. It's number two behind the commanders
13:5255% of drives they get points so Niners are fourth on that
13:57You're fourth in scoring percentage, but 10th in points per drive too many field goals exactly
14:04So so are we overreacting which is your question?
14:07I think from a number standpoint yes, but you are what your record says you are that's fine
14:13Even though I hate that phrase no you don't but trying to get you rankled here
14:16I think what we're getting at this actually for me this boils down to one thing and
14:23One thing only and it's just what you do inside the 20-yard line that that's it
14:28That's it the rest of their problems if you got a couple more touchdowns
14:33You're not you that that eight-point lead that you're cradling is now 14 those those fourth quarter leads
14:39Right we all know that they're like one play here one play there from being seven and three and that's why I'm not counting them
14:46Out and they're gonna make the play right so like I well they may not because they have they've built themselves
14:51But a hell of a green bay
14:52You're not a one-trick pony as a guard to his division or bus you now have gained a game and possibly getting that six wild
14:59Cards, that's a big if yeah, no really really hard game. This is a hard ten days of football
15:04No, no
15:07Situation so
15:08Well now I forgot what I was gonna say you said oh
15:11So it all boils down to the red zone. Yeah, you were building up to it, and I was thinking okay
15:16What's he gonna say and see if you have the same thought and basically I I was thinking to myself
15:21Situational football it's kind of not been good right in situ in
15:25Situational moments, but like so so I this is me now. I'm just asking the question does something is this conversation?
15:32sort of
15:34Top the brakes on the idea that Kyle's play calling has gone awry
15:39It does it for you guys call me Helen Keller because I'm blinded
15:44I'm using the red zone moving forward is the only metric okay, cuz I assume and they've shown me
15:51They got that mastered. This is the point. That's good
15:54This number is killing you that's good, and it's improved. They're probably gonna
16:00I'm going by what I sort of feel is like and and do you guys share this do you hear?
16:07Especially in the last two days that people are less the Kyle Shanahan system has been figured out
16:14Well, I was yeah, I'd be more likely to ask the question
16:17I don't know if that's okay the red please explain to me how things change in the red zone
16:23from a strategic standpoint
16:25Both offensively and defensively maybe then you can narrow it down that way
16:30Caffrey out eight games is the leading
16:34Every time when he comes back and and now now what about this?
16:37I got more numbers or numbers or numbers or numbers for you, so check this out
16:42Touchdowns per red zone trip this year listen to these four teams
16:47number 21 the Dolphins
16:50McDaniel number 26 the Rams McVeigh Wow number 27 the 49ers
16:57Number 28 the Packers Lafleur Wow all running the exact knows that about it
17:03Well that system used to be ahead of the game now. They're all having trouble. Why only in the red zone interesting
17:10Yeah, that's a great question for Greg Cosell like what does he see on tape?
17:15Where's what are you doing at the Saints? Where's that? Oh, I don't know
17:20Because yeah
17:22Just two more quick numbers as we're just drowning people here in this bomb cyclone
17:27Last year the Niners were number one in the red zone offensively this year. They are as Mark mentioned 26
17:33That's in the red zone
17:35defensively
17:36Points allowed in the fourth quarter this team's giving up nine points a game in the fourth last year
17:42They were number one they gave up three point seven points a game so as we look at Kyle's playbook
17:47We also have to look at a defense that has been
17:50Capitulating in fourth quarters, you know who quietly go back now six games if you want to look at the metrics
17:58I think I know yeah Fred Warner has like
18:02DPOI after four games look at his metrics since then but I got
18:07You could say you don't have anything around him or whatever you want
18:10You've been playing on one wheel and he might still say if he could I'm still on one wheel go be I get you though
18:16Maybe yeah, I mean I most
18:18players out there
18:22Nowhere because then he's not healthy boasts is not healthy sometimes
18:28Purdy's got a sore shoulders. You're right Evan threw this one out
18:32We don't know when Purdy got hurt against no
18:35What if he got hurt on that dive early in the game and his shoulder got hurt and maybe that's why they didn't throw downfield
18:42He would be out the game if I knew my quarterback can throw it to me not that you do it
18:47Although they didn't throw it downfield the week before you true
18:50True, you know, I don't know
18:52Yeah, Shannon said it's because they were playing the two high safeties
18:56Which I think more and more teams are doing that especially with that I uke and you figure no kiddle
19:02No, I uke and you've got sober in there who is not a receiver. So if I'm on defense, I'm not gonna get beat deep
19:09I'm gonna make you 14 play drive me and see if I can't step it up against the bad Reds
19:14That's why Jennings would be the guy who catches a lot of passes. I think defenses are willing to kind of live with that
19:21Yeah, which by the way between the 20s, I would say is lethal
19:25Provided that your big guys stop committing penalty
19:3049ers should be amazing at we have three plays to get 10 yards and you're playing too high. No problem
19:36Stop making it second and 20 stop making it second and 15
19:41Not leave you with this because I was a big fan of Brandon I you guys still am did he what did he meet Stein?
19:48He's
19:50Did he ball out before he got hurt? No, but now it's become becoming clear to think they weren't going to miss him
19:57You would be a football buffoon
20:00Because yeah, he didn't play his best football, but the team didn't decided and give 30 M's for no reason
20:07He's missed out there
20:08Even if he's not catching it, he's missed and for me to think all is nothing. He wasn't having a bad year, please
20:16See, that's interesting because I look at the numbers the numbers that we just discussed
20:21Tell me and I I pretty much view Brandon Iuke is like there were no games this year where he was like
20:27Last night with Arizona I have and they're still
20:31Moving up and down the field and then they stop in the red zone and Brandon. I use not a red zone guy
20:36That's not who I would look to but do we know that now that he's not he hasn't been there
20:41Like he could be a decoy in the red zone to make everything
20:47Will it I guess that's what I'm saying. There's a lot of people they miss sure
20:50I mean green law and million McCaffrey
20:53I still think that's just a wild contract and I think in the NFL if you're ever one player away
20:59From unless it's your quarterback if you lose one player and that craters what you're doing
21:05In the red zone though, I don't know man
21:07I think there's more about McCaffrey than Brandon Iuke's career is in trouble with the Niners
21:12Well that because he's gonna be gone until probably next October, right?
21:16And if he's able to come back from the two ligaments and I'm looking at his post
21:212025 release number the dead cap is only 13 million
21:24So he comes back next year and plays nine games and is still working his way back into shape at that point
21:30He might be on the streets
21:33That's not why receiver position is going to be fascinating over the next 18 months no doubt
21:41Well pure souls the only one who I can firmly say I'll be on the team
21:46Like that's the only one. Yeah, Juwan. I guess Juwan's under contract for two years, right?
21:51But I think this is one of them though, isn't it?
21:53Yeah, I think this is one of those years and who in here expects Bosa to go
21:56I got him missing two weeks for sure
21:58I don't have him going in this game, and I don't know how bad the oblique is
22:01But as I asked Doc Pandia yesterday on cleared to play UCSF health, that's not really a Tora doll injury
22:08Oh like Trent was talking about
22:11Good yeah, but because the oblique is not localized
22:15You can't really shoot it up, and I heard Baldy with the morning guys say he had it Stani. It was rough
22:21Yeah, they they called a pass rusher up from their practice. We saw that
22:26Before you guys go and I know we're getting close to the witching hour
22:29But I did want to take a moment to just
22:32Pass condolences to Johnny X aka Johnny the gout man
22:36You are one of the all-time great callers
22:38And I first got to know him when I was working with Gary Radnich down the street
22:42And he would come in with his nobody cares
22:45Which was a parrot of Gary's nobody cares and the gout man aka Johnny X he became a fixture
22:51And you know what he found his way over here over the last couple of years
22:54And we actually were texting back and forth about three weeks ago, and then called our show three weeks
23:00Yeah, I gotta tell you
23:02Passionate about some of Willard's take so Willard will give a take and my phone
23:05And I look and it's all caps from the X, and it's you know 300 words of tell Willard this and ha ha
23:16About Dallas in the show and I'll never forget Gary say Johnny. How's it going before he became the gout man?
23:21Oh, I got gal. It did that just
23:24Radnich, but man he stayed in touch came to all the little events, and I heard that this morning rest in peace
23:30Yeah, great great great call dibs. That was and you were a part of it. That was yeah, absolutely must hear radio
23:37What we do other than you know free food and press credentials is getting to actually meet people who listen
23:44And you meet him and sometimes you become friends with them and certain people absolutely
23:50No, it's who ate the most at the potluck Fargo
23:55Willer well, I did pretty good. Yeah back in there found it
24:00Out I was me
24:03Cuz I thought I was looking at the table
24:09Foil around it, and it just said ham and then I did get embarrassed because I pulled it out
24:14I figured it would be sliced ham, but it's all still on the bone
24:18So now I'm the idiot who the next day at a radio station has got like plastics
24:24Silverware trying to cut little pieces of ham off of a bone
24:28You know it is walking by going look at this guy like do you I mean see you in the aisle?
24:36Well don't go anywhere, there's must hear radio again with Greg Cosell later on what time you got him
24:41Three fifty three fifteen Cosell don't go anywhere keep it locked on 95 7 the game
