00:00As the number of dead and wounded in the Middle East conflict rises, reports indicate that
00:13the region is facing its worst moment yet.
00:20In Brazil, G20 leaders agree on final declaration focusing on climate change, hunger and condemnation
00:25of wars and terrorism.
00:31The International Organization for Migration denounces that the increased violence between
00:35criminal groups has generated massive displacement of some 20,000 people in the last four days
00:42in Haiti.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos, from the Televisual Studios
00:54in Havana, Cuba, we begin with the news.
01:13As the number of dead and wounded in the Middle East conflict rises, reports indicate that
01:17the region is facing its worst moment yet.
01:20To date, in Lebanon, at least 3,516 people have been killed and 14,929 wounded in Israeli
01:27attacks.
01:28Meanwhile, at least 43,922 Palestinians have been killed and 103,898 wounded as part of
01:36Israel's genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2003.
01:40According to the UN's Middle East Envoy, the current conditions in Gaza are among the
01:44worst they've seen in the entire war.
01:47In addition to noticing the whole region is at a grim crossroads, for his part, Israeli
01:51Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vows to continue systematic operations against Hezbollah
01:56even if a ceasefire agreement is reached.
02:04The United States supports the Israeli genocide offensive against Palestine, including the
02:0845-day siege on Gaza Strip preventing human train to enter and the ongoing challenge on
02:14residential buildings.
02:15Saturday's bombs are even usual on refugee camps devastating all Palestine, which current
02:21harsh climate made the crisis more catastrophic.
02:24In this context, local resistance has been fighting off Israeli strikes, having reported
02:28casualties and wounded in the latest hours.
02:31Meanwhile, the death toll of children and women under the rubble go on a rise due to
02:35Israeli shelling on buildings.
02:38Those organizations describe as desperate the humanitarian situation in view of the
02:41prolonged Israeli siege and war.
02:49At least two people were killed and several wounded after Israeli forces bombed southern
02:53Lebanon.
02:54According to the Lebanese National News Agency, two people were killed and several injured
02:59overnight as Israeli forces continued to bomb the southern governorate of Nabatiyah al-Fawqa
03:04as well as Kfar Rahman.
03:06The agency also reported that Israeli strikes hit near the Nabi Fari government university
03:11hospital in the city of Nabatiyah.
03:13Homes in the towns of Ansarieh and Ben-Jubil were also targeted.
03:26A U.S. special envoy for the Middle East, Samos Hochstein, landed on Tuesday in Beirut,
03:31where preliminary talks on a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon are expected to set off.
03:35In addition, spokesperson of the U.S. State Department, Matthew Miller, assured that both
03:40Beirut and Tel Aviv would have reacted positively to the efforts mediated by France.
03:45Conditions for the ceasefire did not transcend, but it was known that Hezbollah knew the terms.
03:49As was the case with the failed truce attempts in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
03:54granted on Monday that even if the efforts were successful, he would continue to attack
03:58Hezbollah to prevent its reconstruction.
04:00And several missiles of the Hezbollah-Lebanese resistance directly have counter-attacked
04:10Tel Aviv after the Israeli shellings on the suburbs of Beirut.
04:13The Israeli-occupying police detailed that one of the missiles crashed into a building
04:17in Ramat Gan, causing damage and injuries.
04:20Official reports revealed that the strikes made the power grid to be cut off in certain
04:24areas of Tel Aviv and the Ben Gurion airport, leaving the city without connections.
04:29Six firefighting teams have been mobilized to extinguish the fires burst out by the impacts.
04:34Hours earlier, an Israeli raid in the Beirut neighborhood left at least 10 dead and 25 injured.
04:46And on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the updated nuclear doctrine.
04:50According to the document, the nuclear deterrent is defensive in nature.
04:54The new doctrine significantly broadens the type of threats to which Moscow will respond
04:58and aims to improve state policy in the area of nuclear deterrence.
05:02The document reiterates that the use of nuclear weapons is an extreme measure.
05:06The doctrine aimed at ensuring the security of sovereignty and territorial integrity
05:11incorporated changes that were endorsed by President Putin on Tuesday amid discussions
05:15by some members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on whether or not to allow Ukraine
05:21to attack deep Russian territory with its missiles.
05:28And Russian forces operating in Syria established nine observation points on the line of separation
05:33in the occupied Syrian Golan.
05:35Russian Forces Deputy Commander Alexander Rodionov stated that the mission is to conduct
05:40air and ground surveillance.
05:42Syrian Arab Army explained that the deployment of Russian military police units improves
05:45stability and security in the territory.
05:48Rodionov also clarified that the cooperation and coordination between the Syrian Arab Army
05:53and the Russian forces strengthens security in the region and helps people return to their
05:57lands and their daily life.
06:06Donald Trump, President-elect of the United States, threatens to use a state of emergency
06:09and the military to expel migrants.
06:12Tom Fieden, leader of an extreme right-wing movement known as Judicial Watch, assured
06:16in a message that was later endorsed by the President-elect himself that as of January
06:202025, the White House will use the military to pursue its policies of mass deportations
06:25of migrants.
06:26To this end, the entrepreneur elected as President will decree a state of emergency as provided
06:31for in the country's constitutional framework prior to the national deployment of military
06:35contingents.
06:54The U.S. National Weather Service reported that the northwest region prepares for the
06:57arrival of a storm that is expected to bring heavy rains and flooding.
07:01The agency warned that the storm could be long-lasting.
07:04Therefore it urged the public to be prepared and comply with the recommended measures.
07:09California is the most vulnerable state, an alert was issued as flash flooding, power
07:13outages and natural damage are expected when the storm reaches maximum intensity.
07:18Some areas in the northwestern part of the country could be targeted by the effects of
07:22the cyclone with possible landslides and rockslides.
07:52Welcome back.
08:00In Brazil, G20 leaders agree on final declaration focusing on climate change, hunger and condemnation
08:05of wars and terrorism.
08:06The 19 heads of state signed a document with ground agreements on issues such as climate
08:11change, hunger and taxes on large fortunes.
08:13Likewise, and in line with the United Nations Charter, they condemn wars and terrorism,
08:19stressing that all states must refrain from the use of force against the sovereignty
08:23of others.
08:24The United States and the European Union pushed to include a condemnation of Russia, which
08:28did not went further.
08:29However, it does allude to the human suffering and negative impacts of the conflicts in Gaza
08:34and Lebanon.
08:42The G20 Summit, a group that brings together the 19 main economies of the world, the European
08:47Union and the African Union, started this Monday in Rio de Janeiro.
08:52Fifty-five delegations and representatives from 40 countries, including guests, are participating
08:57in the meeting.
08:58The meeting is closed to the public, who on the other side of the street watched the arrival
09:02of the leaders and sent them a message.
09:06The United States is present in countries waging war, massacring peoples and plundering
09:12wealth.
09:13At the opening of the meeting, Brazilian President Lula da Silva launched the Global
09:19Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty with 148 adherents, 82 countries in all.
09:26The goal of the partnership is to benefit 500 million people in the poorest countries
09:30through public policies for income distribution by 2030.
09:34The Inter-American Development Bank announced a donation of $25 billion.
09:39At the last minute, the president of Argentina decided to sign the pact and managed to be
09:44in the photo of the Global Alliance.
09:53Although he announced that he was not going to sign, the president of Argentina signed
09:58the Global Pact Against Hunger.
10:03This is a first positive sign from this president of adherence to the Global Pact and now we
10:08will see how the Mercosur will be.
10:15The meeting in Rio de Janeiro is being held under the theme Building a Just World and
10:20a Sustainable Planet.
10:21But the G20 countries account for 85% of the gross domestic product and are the biggest
10:26polluters on the planet.
10:28For Lula da Silva, it is essential to tame the super-rich in order to find the resources
10:38to face the major global problems.
10:45From Iraq to Ukraine, from Bosnia to Gaza, the perception that not all territories deserve
10:50to have their integrity respected and not all lives have the same value has been consolidated.
11:00Disastrous interventions to subvert order in Afghanistan and Libya, indifference has
11:05relegated Sudan and Haiti to oblivion.
11:13The summit will end this Tuesday after a series of activities that began a year ago.
11:18In the midst of wars, genocide, climate crisis, what consensus will emerge among the world's
11:24richest countries?
11:30In this context, the French President Emmanuel Macron sharply criticized a global governance
11:34that does not work out and issues communiqués that not many people read, thus he proposed
11:39a high-level group to work on the revisions.
11:43This system is not working well, and I say that to be polite and understated, because
11:49in recent years we haven't shown our ability to prevent or resolve conflicts.
11:55As we speak, there are 57 conflicts around the world.
12:00Our effectiveness is insufficient and our representation is lacking.
12:11The risk is high.
12:12Unfortunately, I am one of the veterans at this table.
12:16The risk is high of having the same meeting in a year, with the same people, saying, we're
12:22going to do it, and becoming specialists in, we're going to do it.
12:27So if you are fully aligned, I think we should set up a high-level working group, a real
12:32Johannesburg working group.
12:37In this context, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Alberto Murillo and his Russian counterpart
12:42Sergei Lavrov agreed on creating a working group to investigate mercenaries involved
12:46in the Ukrainian conflict.
12:47On the meeting, their representatives decided to form a team to review the cases.
12:52Murillo deemed that although the participation of these citizens in the conflict is an autonomous
12:57decision, it is a matter of interest of the executives.
13:00So the Colombian minister recalled the Parliament is currently debating on passing a treaty
13:04of accession to regulate and ban mercenaries' practices, while Lavrov highlighted that Ukraine
13:10paid them off $3,000 a month to lead the mission.
13:19Cuba's National Defense Council, led by President Miguel Diaz-Canel, discussed the domestic
13:23recovery following powerful hurricanes and earthquakes.
13:27The Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O. Levy, reported that Havana has 99.99
13:33percent of power service, and the most affected provinces, such as Artemisa and Mayaveque,
13:37have 51.6 percent and 97.71 percent power, respectively.
13:42The board decided that water supply has been fully restored in Mayaveque.
13:46In Artemisa, 74 percent of the province has water supply services.
13:51The Chief of the National General Staff of the Civil Defense raised the progress in Granma,
13:55hit by two 6.0 and 6.7 earthquakes.

14:18Found your break?
14:19Don't go away.
14:39Welcome back.
14:40In response to the escalation of armed violence, the Haitian government opened a new military
14:44base to garrison around 2,000 soldiers in Port-au-Prince.
14:49The event was held within the celebration of the 221st anniversary of the Battle of
14:53Berthier.
14:54On his opening address, the President of the Transition Council, Leslie Voltaire, underscored
14:59that the current crisis of violence poses a very serious threat, noting that the military
15:03base is paramount to re-establish national security.
15:07Paving the way for the direction, Voltaire promised to train at least 2,500 new recruits
15:13in the next couple of months to counteract the fact that armed criminal groups have gained
15:17ground on the government in the capital.
15:25And in the International Organization for Migration denounced that the wave of violence
15:29triggered by criminal groups generated some 20,000 displaced in last four days in Haiti.
15:35In this context, the agency claimed that the crisis has disrupted essential supply chains
15:39and left the city totally isolated, while many Haitians have repeatedly been forced
15:45to flee from violence.
15:48Over 17,000 citizens who had sheltered in 15 displacement sites were compelled to leave
15:53what they had managed to rebuild.
15:55IOM pointed out that violence related to clashes between criminal groups has left a death toll
16:01of nearly 4,000 in 2024, according to data from the Office of the United Nations High
16:07Commission for Human Rights.
16:13On the other hand, the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service announced that food aid flights
16:18to Haiti will resume their routes after a week-long suspension of flights.
16:22The agency made a regulatory pause after three commercial airplanes were hit by gunfire from
16:27local criminal groups and the suspension was decreed.
16:30The measure, according to human rights organizations, further condemns murdering the Port-au-Prince
16:34population as they are dealing with the violence of criminal groups armed with weapons and
16:40ammunitions coming from the United States.
16:47And on the first debate, the Colombian House of Representatives voted by absolute majority
16:51in favor of the health reform presented by the government of President Gustavo Petro.
16:56The bill received 14 votes in favor and 4 ballots against.
17:00The regulation, made up of 58 articles, seeks to twist an exclusive and inequitable health
17:04system.
17:05Therefore, in the first four sessions of the first discussion, it gained a lot of acceptance
17:10as six new articles had been passed to the 58 initial articles of the reform.
17:15After going through the first stage, the proposal would advance to the second debate, which
17:19will be held in the Chamber's plenary.
17:21The Minister of Health praised the significant support of the majority of political sectors.
17:31And in Colombia, as well, a Spanish communications company consolidates its power in the sector,
17:37a situation rejected by the country's Central Workers' Union.
17:43Diego is one of more than 30 workers of Channel One, CMI News program, who were laid off after
17:49the acquisition of that television space by the Spanish communications company Prisa.
17:53In addition to Diego, more than 180 workers have been left at risk in what constitutes
17:58the largest action of massive layoffs resulting from this transaction between the concessionaire
18:02that operates Channel One and the Spanish company, to whom the entire control of the
18:06programming grid, contents, and commercial exploitation was handed over.
18:10The workers were not taken into account, leaving many of them adrift.
18:18They should have also thought about the people who work there, the families, the households.
18:23There were more or less 130 of us from CMI.
18:26We are in the diverse, because there are people who could have come out of the situation better,
18:31but others who could not, as in my case.
18:34There are those of us who do not have a job at the moment, and we have to see what we
18:38will do, to see what solution they give us.
18:41But unfortunately, when they make these changes, these contributions, the giant companies do
18:46not look at the employee, they do not look at the employee's welfare as such.
18:50They care about closing the business.
18:52They have their share.
18:53They liquidate.
18:54The other people do not matter to them.
18:56They do not care about those people.
19:06The Central Workers' Union rejected the layoffs following this operation, in which
19:10CMI had 32 years of experience, a formal company on which nearly 100 direct jobs depended and
19:16whose contents are now replaced by the contents of Caracol Radio, a subsidiary of the Prisa
19:21group in the country.
19:25There should have been an issue of change of employer, and therefore of employer substitution.
19:30But no, here, the workers are nowhere to be seen by the gentlemen of Caracol Prisa.
19:40But these are not the only irregularities, according to the same Workers' Unitary Central
19:45and some congressmen.
19:46The space occupied by CMI is a public character, which now cannot be exploited and used by
19:51a private without prior bidding, which constitutes a violation of the law and which gives rise
19:56to the formation of a monopoly of some sectors of communication, which represents a violation
20:01of national sovereignty.
20:07It is pertinent to ask what happened, how the deal was agreed and how it was structured,
20:11since it is an absolutely legal fact and it should be explained why the haste group
20:15arrived with altruistic kindness to stave the channel with serious economic difficulties
20:19in a process plagued with opacity in which nothing more and nothing less than the privatization
20:23of a public channel through the back door is at stake, and also without knowing in exchange
20:28for what.
20:32In view of these irregular situations, the Minister of Technologies, Information and
20:37Communications, Mauricio Lizcano, will be called to a political control debate in the
20:41Congress of the Republic in order to explain to the country why he did not make the proper
20:45intervention and control of this operation on public media in the hands of a private
20:50company, which increases the monopoly of the media in the hands of economic conglomerates
20:54in the country.
21:08Ball in France, a nighttime exhibition with illuminated dinosaur figures, has been inaugurated
21:14at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
21:16This recreational light show was designed by scientists and aims to showcase the diversity
21:22of the Jurassic world through various animated exhibits.
21:25The show has several specimens well known to the general public as well as a large number
21:30of unknown plants and animals that are presented to encourage visitors to admire and learn
21:35about them.
21:36Each element has explanatory signs and posters with information about each of the species
21:41as well as provides data about their way of life and the role they play in the ecosystem.
21:47The exhibition will be open to the public until January 19, 2025.
21:57At this we have come to the end of this news brief.
