00:00In Palestine, social movements denounced the forced displacement of the people of Gaza
00:09following constant Israeli attacks.
00:16Hurricane Milton left Florida and headed to the Atlantic Ocean, leaving strong flooding,
00:20large power outages, and four dead in its wake.
00:27In Haiti, the mayor of Saint-Marc-Mérieux-en-Fievre reported that criminal gun attacks have resulted
00:31in 115 civilian deaths.
00:42Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the DSU studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:47We begin with the news.
00:57In Palestine, social movements denounced the forced displacement of the people of Gaza
01:12following constant Israeli attacks.
01:14Israeli military operations make life in the coastal enclave unsustainable.
01:19In the sense, authorities warned that the short time given for the evacuation makes
01:22the movement difficult and puts the lives of Palestinians at risk.
01:27Social movements request protection for civilians in compliance with the provisions of international
01:32humanitarian law.
01:39Palestinian authorities reported on Wednesday that at least 28 civilians were killed and
01:43others wounded following new Israeli airstrikes on a schoolhouse in this place.
01:49Also in the city of Jabalia, Palestinian representatives also denounced an advanced
01:52stage of ethnic cleansing by the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian people.
02:02And thousands of citizens in the city of Beirut embarked on a warship of Turkey after Israeli
02:07attacks on Lebanon.
02:09The warship, named TCG Bayraktar, sailed from the port of Mersin, Turkey, carrying 300 tons
02:14of supplies, including food, sanitary kits, kitchen utensils, tents, beds and blankets.
02:19The warship had been sent to Lebanon to provide aid and bring back Turkish nationals and some
02:25foreigners following Israeli airstrikes, which had targeted the country in recent weeks.
02:30Turkish officials and the government affirmed that military evacuations and charter flights
02:34will be organized if necessary to repatriate Turkish nationals in Lebanon.
02:45It's indescribable. They bombed the street below our house. From that moment on, it was
02:52over for me. I said I didn't want to stay in Beirut anymore. From that moment on, Beirut
02:57was over for me.
02:59The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Janine Henness, last year warned
03:04about the escalating humanitarian crisis in the region, calling the situation desperate.
03:15As you know, this afternoon we are connecting from Beirut, and I can tell you without reservation
03:23that the situation is dire. Unrelenting bombardment is now part and parcel of daily life in Lebanon
03:31with the latest blasts not even 30 minutes ago. Far too many people are paying an unimaginable
03:39price, with over 2,000 killed, many more wounded, and hundreds of thousands displaced.
03:45In the same context, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon, Imran Rizad, denounced that paramedic
03:51teams and health workers remain victims of the attacks in the region.
03:55Health care and frontline workers have come under attack, as have civil defense centers
04:01and water supply systems, pushing essential services to the brink of collapse. The killing
04:08of over 100 paramedics, health care workers and public servants impairs Lebanon's emergency
04:16response capacity. This must stop. Even wars have rules.
04:23Palestine on Thursday, the Israeli army bombed the Hufayda school in the central governorate
04:28of Deir al-Bala in the Gaza Strip. From the site where thousands of displaced persons
04:32were being evacuated, a correspondent, Huda Hegassi, has more information.
04:39A few moments ago, the Israeli army bombed one of the schools in one of the central governorates
04:45of the Gaza Strip, the governorate of Deir al-Bala. I am at this moment in the school
04:52that was just targeted by Israeli troops. We are talking about a school that evacuated
04:57hundreds and thousands of Gazans who are, as we can see in these first moments after
05:03the bombing, trying to dig out from under the rubble the victims and wounded left by
05:10the severe aggression. The current situation is still quite tense, as the exact number
05:17of victims is unknown. But so far, 17 deaths have been reported, a figure that could increase
05:25at any moment since most of the injured are in critical condition and because there are
05:32victims still trapped under the rubble. Due to the bombing, the victims have been completely
05:39dismembered and so they are still trying to get the remains out from under all this rubble
05:45and under all these ruins. I would like to add that this school is located in the humanitarian
05:53zone, in the governorate of Deir al-Bala, and should not have been attacked. In addition,
05:59this school is very close to the International Red Cross organization, so we are talking
06:05about the fact that the Israel bombed one of the schools in a humanitarian zone. The
06:13bombing took place in the early afternoon at a time when the Gazans were in the street.
06:19There was a lot of movement, especially since it is located in a central street, in a street
06:25where there are organizations, stores, and that is why there were a large number of Gazans
06:31killed, while there were so many victims.
06:39Israel bombed them when these people were calm and safe in this school, a school full
06:42of women, old people, children. What is Israel doing? Even if there was a wanted person,
06:47why are they bombing a school? Why are they doing this collective slaughter? Enough of
06:53war. Where are the Arab and free countries of the world?
06:57As I mentioned before, the number of victims so far has reached 17, but could increase.
07:05The wounded are reported to be more than 50. Therefore, we are talking about a full-fledged
07:10genocide. This wasn't the first or the only school that has been bombed by Israel.
07:16More than 190 schools have been bombed by the Israeli army, as unfortunately their massacres
07:24continue here in the Gaza Strip.

07:45Welcome back.
08:14On Thursday, Hurricane Milton left Florida and headed to the Atlantic Ocean. As per the
08:19National Hurricane Center's 8 a.m. Thursday update, Category 1 Hurricane Milton is 120
08:24kilometers east-northeast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, with maximum sustained winds of 137
08:30kilometers per hour. The storm is moving at 28 kilometers per hour east-northeast and
08:34will continue to move away from Florida and pass to the north of the Bahamas during the
08:38day. While authorities forecast a gradual weakening, but Milton is expected to become
08:42a powerful extratropical low on Thursday evening.
08:49We're focusing on just recovering, you know, getting help to people that need it. Again,
08:52this community was hit from what the Dopplers are showing. We got hit the hardest, the quickest.
08:57Again, we say this wasn't expected. We prepare for things, but you can't expect or do anything
09:03when we have multiple tornadoes touchdown in such a short period of time in our community.
09:08It's just, it's devastating. There's no words to describe it.
09:15And as Hurricane Milton left Florida on Thursday, authorities registered deadly tornadoes, many
09:19homes destroyed, and over 3 million customers without power. Tampa Bay metropolitan area
09:24appeared to have escaped without the catastrophic flooding that had been feared. Milton pounded
09:29cities with ferocious winds and rains, whipped up a barrage of tornadoes, and caused at least
09:34four deaths.
09:39And after a forecast of weakening, Hurricane Leslie regained strength on its northwest
09:45Atlantic track with maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour. According to the
09:49National Hurricane Center, despite the initial strengthening forecast for the day, Leslie
09:54will weaken until early next week. Leslie is located 1,645 kilometers east-northeast
10:00of northern Leeward Islands and is advancing at 17 kilometers per hour. A slight reduction
10:06in forward speed is expected, and it could make a turn to the northeast during the next
10:11few days. It's important to note that this hurricane is expected to reach Category 2
10:15by Thursday.
10:20In Niger, authorities reported at least 339 people dead and more than 1 million displaced
10:26after heavy rains. In a general assessment by the Civil Protection Service, the country
10:30faces an unprecedented humanitarian crisis since June. Authorities also reported losses
10:36in infrastructure, livestock, and food supplies, which directly affect the economic and social
10:41stability of the country during this rainy season. Weather experts warn that climate
10:46change intensifies this type of phenomena. The Interior Ministry informed that in September
10:51alone, there were 273 deaths and more than 700,000 affected, figures higher than those
10:57recorded in 2022.
11:01And in Haiti, the mayor of Saint-Marc, Myriam Fievre, reported that criminal gun attacks
11:11have resulted in 115 civilian deaths. The killings by the Grand Grief Gang in the early
11:16hours of last Thursday morning, whose victims include women, children, and the elderly,
11:20resulted in more than 120 people injured by bladed weapons and firearms. The injured were
11:27treated at Saint-Nicolas, the closest hospital, to the scene of the incident. This has caused
11:32that about 6,000 inhabitants left their homes to survive the atrocious massacre in the city
11:38of Pont Saint-Denis, causing civilians to temporarily stay in the city of Saint-Marc.
11:44I was hiding with my son behind a vehicle, and two men appeared and walked towards me.
11:50One of them said, don't shoot her. But when I ran, the other one shot me in the back.
11:58Venezuela's Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, assured that
12:03Washington will nationalize the city of Pont Saint-Denis.
12:07Venezuela's Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, assured that
12:12Washington will initiate relations with Caracas as of 2025 for the purpose of stabilizing
12:17the world oil market.
12:23Whether it is Kamala or Trump, the United States will begin in 2025 a partial understanding
12:28with President Nicolás Maduro to ensure the stability of the world oil market, putting
12:33the economic interests of both nations above ideological positions. The recent conflicts
12:38in the Middle East have placed the United States in another scenario, and as demonstrated,
12:44only Venezuela can ensure such stability.

13:21Welcome back.
13:22On Wednesday, Brazilian citizens regained access to the social media acts of the Supreme
13:26Court after the suspension of the platform in the South American country since August
13:3030, due to repeated non-compliance with court rulings. Through a statement, Brazil's national
13:36telecommunications agency notified internet service providers of the unblocking of acts.
13:41Nevertheless, the agency clarified that the unblocking time will depend on the measures
13:45used by the suppliers, depending on their specificities.
13:49The unblocking of acts was agreed on Tuesday by order of Alexander de Moraes, the federal
13:54Supreme Court judge in charge of the case, after the platform unpaid fines totaling 4.7
14:00million euros imposed for several contempt of court charges and investigations against
14:05this information.
14:12In the Caribbean island of Martinique, police repressed demonstrators in Rivière-Salette
14:16city during protests against the high cost of living in French overseas territory.
14:22Throughout last Wednesday, the situation became increasingly tense in the region, with people
14:27forming barricades at different points. Several organizations and trade union associations
14:32denounced the disproportionate use of police against men, women, minors and senior citizens
14:38peacefully demonstrated against colonial repression. Union leaders participated in the demonstrations
14:43in rural sectors of the country to join the demonstrations in response to the island's
14:47colonial status and social inequalities.
14:52In Mozambique, vote counting is underway on Thursday following Wednesday's national election
14:58in which the ruling Ferlemo party's candidate is likely to win. Four candidates run for
15:04the nation's presidency, the leading Daniel Chapo standing for the Filipe party, his main
15:09contender independent Venancio Motlane in addition to former rebel commander, also former
15:14MADE opposition leader Lutero Simango. All are competing to oust President Filipe Motlane
15:20from his presidency and Filipe Muzi who has served the maximum two terms allowed with
15:25official results to hold the election head of state. The elected head of state will receive
15:30a legacy that includes an Islamist northern insurgency which has prevented multi-billion
15:35gas projects and led to the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands. In this context,
15:40I would like to share his opinion on the potential outcome.
15:43Yes, yesterday I cast my vote. It was good. These were very good elections. A lot of people
15:58have been going to vote. Even until 8 p.m. people were still queuing. We are going to
16:04have good results and things will change.
16:07On Thursday, France's major left-wing parties reject Prime Minister Michel Barnier's government's
16:15budget proposals. The parties deem that the budget cuts of the conservative Michel Barnier
16:20have attacked the French social model. The coordinator of France Insoumise, Manuel Bompard,
16:25assured that the draft budget estimates, which is marked by a total effort of 60 billion
16:29euros, reflected the most violent austerity plan the country has ever experienced. The
16:35situation of the French public accounts has come to the forefront of the market's news
16:39since Macron called early legislative elections after his severe electoral defeat in the European
16:46elections of June 9.
16:48Author Han Kang became on Thursday the first South Korean to win a Nobel Prize in Literature
17:07awarded by the Swedish Academy. Kang's work characterizes by her depiction of mental and
17:15physical suffering as well as historical events. Her major international breakthrough
17:20happened in 2007 with the novel The Vegetarian, which won the Men Booker Prize in 2016.
17:27The Swedish Academy has long been criticized for its Eurocentrism and the over-representation
17:33of Western white men authors among its winners, where only 18 out of the 121 laureates were
17:39women. After undergoing major reforms in 2018, the body has since honored four women, including
17:44Kang. Regarding the Nobel Committee 2024 pick, one of its members backed the choice.
18:14In Paraguay, the fourth Latin American Special Olympic Games have been underway since October
18:294. A closing ceremony will be held on October 12 in Asunción. The Special Olympics' goal
18:36is to boost inclusion and diversity in the region, empowering individuals with intellectual
18:42disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports.
18:47Over 1,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from 23 countries have attended the event,
18:52accompanied by over 2,000 volunteers and sport players, as guest nations are Germany, Belgium
18:59and Spain. So far, they have been competing in athletics, swimming, futsal, basketball
19:05and bowls.
