00:00Strays in Malaysia have long been subjected to abuse, neglect and despicable acts by humans.
00:10This past week alone has seen at least two cases of reported animal cruelty, in addition
00:16to the ongoing call for justice for kopi from animal advocates.
00:24This is why it's heartening to hear of everyday Malaysians such as Woon Mei Lan and Sharifa
00:29Alina who are going all out to help homeless animals.
00:35Every morning at 7am, Woon wakes up and heads to her animal shelter, which currently houses
00:41over 200 dogs.
00:43For several hours, she looks after their needs before heading to her job as a hairdresser.
00:49Once she clocks out in the evening, she returns to keep helping the dogs.
00:55It's a challenging life, but Woon does it out of her love for animals.
01:00Woon and Sharifa are the co-founders of Winnie's Home Animal Shelter in Rawang.
01:05For the past five years, they have been caring for sick, stray and abandoned dogs in Rawang
01:11and Selayang, taking them in when nobody else wanted them.
01:20Sharifa and Woon work hard to take care of these dogs, feeding and treating them, and
01:44providing them with a safe space.
01:50Winnie's Home is run through donations and out of their own pockets, but maintaining
02:14the shelter can cost up to 15,000 ringgit a month, which is financially draining for
02:20Woon and Sharifa.
02:21As such, they are now turning to the public for aid and donations.
02:36Ultimately they hope for a piece of land to call their own, so that the money they currently
02:41spend on rent can be used to cover the animals' expenses instead.
02:47If you wish to help Winnie's Home Animal Shelter, contact Woon at 016-661-6179.
