00:00:30live edition of the Patriots beat podcast here on the CLNS media network presented by
00:00:35our wonderful friends over at prize picks game time and PXG. It's Brian Hines back as
00:00:41always with Alex Barth in the Patriots are back from London and unfortunately they do
00:00:46so with another loss as they fell 32 to 16 to the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday early Sunday
00:00:54morning to fall to one in six on season and Barth I'd love nothing more to open this show
00:01:01about how is another encouraging game from Drake May and the rookie quarterback looks
00:01:07really good and that because that's like the excitement right now that's what we should
00:01:11really be talking about and hammering home that they might have finally solved the quarterback
00:01:15position I know it's only two games but we got to start with the coaching staff because
00:01:20you know one of Gerard Mayo's big no-no's it felt like since he took over is no error
00:01:26repeaters and there's a lot of errors and repeated errors with this coaching staff from
00:01:32Mayo to Alex Van Pelt to DeMarcus Covington and everyone honestly on that staff and it
00:01:38all kind of boiled over to a point where he said yesterday after the game that they have
00:01:43a soft football team and he kind of walked that back this morning by saying you know
00:01:47we're playing soft we have tough guys we can turn this around but we have a soft team
00:01:52and that boiled down to three like specifics stopping the run running the football and
00:01:58covering kicks and they're not doing any of those things very well especially against
00:02:03Jaguar Jacksonville rush for 20 yards with the running backs allowed 171 yards on the
00:02:10ground gave up a 96 yard punt return touchdown so penalties still undisciplined all boils
00:02:17down to coaching so we'll start just kind of big picture we'll get into you know I want
00:02:21to talk about AVP a little bit and Covington but where are you at with Gerard Mayo and
00:02:26his staff right now kind of big picture yeah it's not great it's not great and it feels
00:02:32like they're kind of scrambling you know they've how they how they come out of the gate this
00:02:40year right they played a really tough physical game against Cincinnati Bengals Gerard Mayo
00:02:44comes out afterwards says we're gonna be a physical team we're gonna be run first team
00:02:48that's we're gonna do we're gonna stick by it you know and that message it feels like
00:02:53has been completely lost and that's not the only instance in which that's happened that's
00:03:00the big one to me but you know I some of it is they've lost players but like failure
00:03:05to adjust we talked about this that first game you felt really good about the coaching
00:03:12staff coming away from it you should have they had two months to prepare for that and
00:03:17you have whether it's injuries new opponents whatever you have to adjust it felt like the
00:03:22adjustments never happened like the plan was to just roll that at 17 times and as that
00:03:27hasn't worked things you maybe started a spiral on them a little bit and they've had
00:03:31some other things come up that haven't helped but that's life in the NFL like things are
00:03:35gonna come up you have to adapt to it and you know there's been little moments here
00:03:40and there I think a perfect example of this in this game because there's been little moments
00:03:43where it's been I think one step forward two steps back for this team like there's something
00:03:47you like but then something else comes up they weren't starting games well at all so
00:03:52Gerard Mayo comes out last week and players came out last week and said we want to get
00:03:58off to fast start we need to get off to fast start we're gonna get off to fast start which
00:04:01like yes this team needs to start better seems not built to play from behind you got to come
00:04:06out hot and get a lead and what did they do they came out they played arguably their best
00:04:11quarter of football for the first 15 minutes and credit to them they said they're gonna
00:04:16have a hot start and they had a hot start the problem is the whole point of a hot start
00:04:22is you're setting the tone to maintain a level of intensity you are setting the tone
00:04:28you are setting the level of intensity and you are making your opponent come to you when
00:04:32you set that tone and don't maintain it it doesn't really mean anything and they followed
00:04:38what was arguably their best quarter of football this year with what was arguably their worst
00:04:42like it's not even that drive because they had a drive that went from the first to the
00:04:46second quarter they get the ball down the field clock turns over and then like whatever
00:04:52flipping sides the field whatever suddenly boom field goal after a couple of ugly plays
00:04:58and then they never recovered so yeah it's just they don't seem to have like if it just
00:05:06feels like a fire drill right now it feels like a fire drill it feels like they're scrambling
00:05:11it feels like there's some chaos and look there's gonna be some of that with a first
00:05:15year coaching staff like that's I get that but can can there be any sign of signs of
00:05:21improvement you mentioned the air repeaters I don't think anybody expected them to coach
00:05:25a perfect season this year like that would have been unfair but when we're seeing these
00:05:28same things week after week after week you kind of start to look at it and I'll give
00:05:33you an example Brian I know you said he wanted to get an Alex Van Pelt and stop me if you've
00:05:37heard this one before end of the first half the pain I could hear you I could hear you
00:05:42yelling when they went to drop back on second down on that one sports of Patriots podcast
00:05:49and I did I said out loud on my couch alone they're gonna do it again first down run like
00:05:55so again pick one run the clock out slash force the opponent to use timeouts or try
00:06:00to move the ball run pass pass they did complete the second pass this time but short of the
00:06:06stick so the Jaguars only had a use you want one time out now the Jaguars didn't capitalize
00:06:11on this they kneeled it out went to the half so whatever but like they were in position
00:06:15to get burned and this is now the fourth time this has happened in seven games it worked
00:06:22once it worked last week against Jacksonville because Drake made me two insane throws but
00:06:29like okay so this I don't know if it's like the strategy works so they feel like they
00:06:33can keep doing it even though what happened last week wasn't really sustainable like this
00:06:37is one where you got to show me you have a better plan I the first week it happened
00:06:41they blew it okay like that that sucks you'd rather not happen but learn from it don't
00:06:47make the same mistake again it's now four times in seven weeks it's concerning yep and
00:06:53I want to get into some of more van Pelt's kind of play calls the big one you know obviously
00:06:58the first down runs after the successful first drive but just back to Gerard I want to get
00:07:04your thoughts on if you should have said publicly the soft comments but I'm and we
00:07:09were kind of talking about this I think we were texting in a group chat with Taylor I've
00:07:13kind of been on this for a few weeks now like go fix your defense dude like I know you want
00:07:18to be the CEO type figure and you want to stand on the sideline and defer to your coaches
00:07:23that you hired or Elliot Wolfe hired that you were in the meeting room for but one of
00:07:29the reasons you know this was an attractive hire and maintaining your defensive staff
00:07:34was because this was a really good defense last year we figured a lot of that would roll
00:07:37over and you know they're changing a lot of things they changed a lot more from Belichick's
00:07:43defense and I think we expected and I know they lost some pieces that really big pieces
00:07:49that are a big part of this but just some of the schematics the personnel usage it's
00:07:53a lot different than it was that we expected it to be from Bill's defense so I'm at the
00:07:58point where and I wonder if he's kind of here now where it's like okay because he used to
00:08:03have a big hand in the game planning and then you know Steve went and called the plays
00:08:08where if he's almost like all right I got to kind of get my hands a little dirty here
00:08:12and go back and really help this defense and because that that's where he should be right
00:08:17I know you want to be the CEO but your defensive coach your linebacker coach your linebacker
00:08:23play is horrible right now without Juwan Bentley like go help the Marcus Covington go put some
00:08:28game plans together and figure that side of the ball out and then Alex Van Pelt's a
00:08:33different story we talked about that but any thoughts on that a and then I know his team
00:08:39is playing soft it's true but do you think he should have said that publicly to the media
00:08:44after the game well you talk about him wanting to get control of the defense like send a
00:08:48message right and and mess we'll see how the message is received with a message sent Drake
00:08:53may said after the game that Mayo said it in the postgame speech which I think is a
00:09:00factor right if he just came out and said that without saying it to the team I think
00:09:06you look at it very differently yeah right I think the fact he said it to the team in
00:09:12the speech and by the way this is the second week in a row he's done this and maybe this
00:09:16was a little stronger but if you remember last week and this was specifically about
00:09:19the defense in his opening statement he mentioned the struggles they had tackling and said I
00:09:24told those guys you should feel like crap today you should feel like crap that's pretty
00:09:29direct to like that's a you know pretty blunt assessment as well so like I'd hate it more
00:09:35if you were wrong he's very clearly not wrong you watch on both sides the ball in the line
00:09:41of scrimmage there's no initial push from the Patriots on either side there there was
00:09:48a Trevor Lawrence quarterback sneak I don't remember if it was late third early fourth
00:09:53quarter it was on that long drive which by the way the 17 play drive 1124 off the clock
00:09:59that's the longest drive in the NFL in the last two years in terms of time of possession
00:10:03well not the offense can't say it was like 12 minutes 1124 1124 there were no 11 minute
00:10:10drives in the NFL last season they went 1124 that's soft that's and at a separate point
00:10:16I think these overlapped a little bit the Jaguars ran the ball 17 times in a row so
00:10:21the Jaguars called you soft very publicly because you don't do that against the team
00:10:25you don't think it's soft even like just to interrupt remember last week when the Texans
00:10:30they kept making them return kicks he said they challenged our toughness in that area
00:10:34of the game so this has been there have been signs of this growing and you know you mentioned
00:10:39like they can't stop the run without Juwan Bentley but here's my point if they had like
00:10:44a bad game like one bad game or if it was like week two and he came out and said we're
00:10:50soft I'd have a lot more of a problem with it when he's the last person in the football
00:10:56world that's saying it because we've all known this and it's been pretty apparent I mean
00:11:01like if guys in the locker room didn't hear it hadn't heard it they needed to hear it
00:11:04at this point whether it's from their head coach or anybody else now to go back and sort
00:11:09of walk it back today I think lessens the impact of that and I don't like that like
00:11:13say it but say it say it with your chest out right but like I go back to just kind
00:11:18of go back the quarterback sneak from Trevor Lawrence late in the game was a fourth and
00:11:21short and you think like quarterback sneak right the quarterback's gonna get the ball
00:11:26he's kind of kind of lean forward and put his shoulder in and put his helmet in and
00:11:29he's ready to help push he he could have held the ball out in front of him there was nobody
00:11:34that close the the Jaguars offensive line just blew the Patriots back off the snap I
00:11:39mean two three yards off the line it was non-competitive and that was happening all
00:11:45day right Jaguars have the ball at the 40 the plus 40 they're basically playing offense
00:11:50from the 37 in the run game because of how little push the Patriots are getting on offense
00:11:57in the passing game or in the running game same thing right Patriots have the ball at
00:12:02the plus 40 they're playing from like the 42 more often than not because it was just
00:12:06the initial push the initial surge was going Jacksonville's way every time in the past
00:12:11game to two pressures according to PFF two pressures on 21 drop backs one of those had
00:12:17to be schemed up for a corner who completely blew by the quarterback and missed a clear
00:12:21sack like they football for all we talk about quarterbacks quarterbacks quarterbacks and
00:12:26quarterbacks are a big part of it obviously football games have always been and always
00:12:31will be won and lost at the line of scrimmage that's just the nature of the sport it is
00:12:35really hard to find a truly dominant team there are teams that win here and there like
00:12:39even win a title here and there without a great line but they're not dominant they scrape
00:12:44to it you will never find a dominant team a team that wins consistently that doesn't
00:12:49have at least a good offensive line a good defensive line and they're getting their butts
00:12:54kicked in the trenches right now so you know could Mayo phrase a little better maybe again
00:13:01I'd have more of a problem if he didn't say it to the players before he said it to us
00:13:04yeah definitely but he didn't lie yeah what he said wasn't true and with something like
00:13:11that just for me I would imagine that's something he's been saying behind the scenes for a few
00:13:15weeks and the message didn't come through and that's why it's now public right he kind
00:13:21of dipped his toe in last week you should feel like crap clearly the message you should
00:13:26feel like crap didn't get through so now he's taking it to another level that's the end
00:13:31by the way to say I didn't mind that comment is not to excuse the host of other problems
00:13:34they have going on I know I said that earlier today on the sports hub and suddenly I'm defending
00:13:38Gerard Mayo in this one instance I don't have a massive issue of issue with what he said
00:13:44doesn't mean he's been a good coach but to me the issue isn't Mayo calling them soft
00:13:51the issue is that Mayo's right they are soft yeah and again a lot of it comes back to the
00:13:57personnel out there but they're not doing much to correct it right now like they can't
00:14:04the Jaguars they just doubled Devon gotcha up front and then that was it and you look
00:14:09at a lot of those runs especially that you know second the third quarter stretch that
00:14:14long drive like it was all the same place it was like an inside zone with an RPO to
00:14:19the tight end and they just kept handing it off and getting as Mayo said death by a thousand
00:14:24paper cuts so the middle of the field play is horrible and I know you lost far more Bentley
00:14:29peppers that's your middle of the field and that's a big loss but they're just not doing
00:14:34much to adjust to it they're playing like a ton of base personnel and then they're just
00:14:38getting gashed through the air because we have Jelani Tavai running around in zone coverage
00:14:43in the middle of field which that's not a strength of his game like I know you don't
00:14:46have your best players out there and even if you did like it's not the most talented
00:14:51roster but they're not really putting these guys in positions to succeed out there and
00:14:55that's when it comes back to Mayo and the Marcus Covington in order to do that so he's
00:15:03not he's definitely not wrong with his evaluation but as you said there's a lot of other things
00:15:07that is Gerard's fault that they're not correcting and that's why I wonder if he does kind of
00:15:12get more involved on the defense here going forward to try to fix yeah the whole CEO set
00:15:17up to me isn't gonna work like he has to be more hands-on because it's just and I mean
00:15:22between him and Dante Hightower two of the best linebackers of their era you get some
00:15:26good linebacker play in there right I'm trying to see if I can find rushing yards before
00:15:33contact per attempt I don't really know where to find it but like so I know the Patriots
00:15:40offense was bad Russia yeah that's that I'm trying to find what the difference is because
00:15:43I know I have since Bentley's been gone so what's that for five games he hasn't played
00:15:50since week two right okay he missed the Jets game yeah they've given up 167 rush yards
00:15:56per game 160 plus in the last three games which is the first time they've done that
00:16:02since 93 I believe so 21 years ago so not great all right so here we go the Patriots
00:16:11in this game ran for 38 yard and we can honestly take Drake May out of this because I think
00:16:16it was 12 carries for 20 yards by the running backs yeah so but they ran for 20 yards total
00:16:2412 of them were after contact or even when you you know you when you include Drake make
00:16:3038 rushing yards 33 after contact so they had five yards before contact the Jaguars
00:16:37ran for 96 yards before contact yikes yep yep that is yeah that's not great and then
00:16:50so we could bring that into Alex van Pelt they kept running the ball right it felt like
00:16:55they were really just kind of knocking their head against the wall to run the ball there
00:16:59they go the first drive of the game you mentioned they started fast it was great they went right
00:17:05down the field and they scored Drake May went six to seven sixty two yards and a really
00:17:10nice touchdown or he beat a blitz flicked it out to Jameichael hasty and he made two
00:17:14men miss and they scored and they had four first downs on that drive and they passed
00:17:20on three of them and it was good drive ton of success the next drive they have five first
00:17:26downs they only passed on one of them which ended in a field goal and then they go you
00:17:33know they're up ten nothing they get the ball back they get a PI on first down so
00:17:37then they're the real first down was a run for minus one yards then they go three and
00:17:41out the next drive went three and out first down run for one yard and then the drive right
00:17:45before the half you were talking about they go three and out and it's a run for minus
00:17:49four yards and then they come out of the half and first down run three yards so the offense
00:17:56you know it's it's the worst pass defense in the league Jacksonville Drake May is playing
00:18:00well the other touchdown drive I know is not really garbage time but it was later in
00:18:05the game he went five four eight ninety two yards drove him right down the field for a
00:18:08touchdown so that felt weird to me that they just kept insisting on trying to run the football
00:18:14there when again it's the worst pass defense in the league and your rookie quarterback
00:18:18was having a lot of success throwing the ball just really felt like they were forcing that
00:18:23Jacksonville was teeing off on the run like they had no problems you know sending guys
00:18:27on the backside and they just had no success doing it so you know you go to Van Pelt that
00:18:32was kind of my big thing with him in that game and that's been reoccurring there's been
00:18:39other games where it was kind of flip-flopped but you felt like maybe they should have ran
00:18:42the ball more and he was passing the ball so just the sequencing of plays and that's
00:18:46what we've gone back to with him it feels off at times like he doesn't have a real good
00:18:51feel for the game and you saw that with his just he just kind of kept wanting to run there
00:18:56on Sunday yeah this is this is uh one another state mistake repeater thing and two something
00:19:03that you see with these west coast coaches and i'm sorry brian i'm gonna go on a shanty
00:19:06entry rant they love them some original game plan we like they come in and the game plan
00:19:12might be different week to week we're gonna run and we're gonna i'm gonna smack my head
00:19:17against the wall for runs because these coaches one of their core beliefs is that players
00:19:21are mostly irrelevant that it's scheme above all and their brilliance will carry them to
00:19:27success there's an arrogance there's an arrogance that comes with that offensive system sometimes
00:19:31it's warranted but there's an arrogance that comes with it so we came in wanting to run
00:19:34the ball i'm gonna run the ball i'm gonna slam my head against the wall 15 times for
00:19:381.7 yards per carry but damn it that's what i want to do so that's what i'm gonna do and
00:19:43when i say the mistake repeater thing brian this is two weeks after we came on here after
00:19:49the game against the dolphins and said you're running for 7.1 yards per carry a franchise
00:19:54best why are you throwing the ball at your nine whatever it was for nine even better
00:19:59why are you throwing the ball at the end of the game when you're within rushing distance
00:20:03of the end zone because they do like there's no in-game adjustments from these coaches
00:20:08they do not believe in it they don't believe in adjusting to the circumstances whether
00:20:13it's arrogance whether it's because it's what the spreadsheets tell them to do probably
00:20:16a little bit of both it's you're seeing it now with me and pelt and again two weeks ago
00:20:24just had to run the ball and you probably win the game and they come out throwing this
00:20:27week on the first drive brian they had four first downs on that first drive which by the
00:20:32way that's what it should look like that's the game plan you stick to that was great
00:20:37and i don't know if it's because pop douglas went out or whatever first drive four first
00:20:41downs they ran it on three of them after that drive pass on three of them right they
00:20:47had 11 on their next 11 first downs they had a few more after that but they were like trailing
00:20:52by three possessions at this point when the game was within reach on their next 11 first
00:20:58downs they ran on eight of them eight of 11 when you're running for 1.7 yards per carry
00:21:06and in the red zone against miami when you're running for 7.9 yards per carry you throw
00:21:13the ball four times it's just a failure to grasp the game script it's a failure to adjust
00:21:20to the circumstances on the field and it's now an error repeater example i get it's it
00:21:26isn't it isn't i know some people will be like well you wanted them to run and now you
00:21:30want them to throw no it's the idea that the game was going a certain way and they didn't
00:21:35adapt to what was happening on the field that's now happened twice in three weeks and
00:21:41you mentioned the first drive like i thought that was a really good script for the excellent
00:21:46there was excellent there was motion at the snap which jacksonville has had issues defending
00:21:51there was you know that he got drake on the move a few times i believe um there was one
00:21:57other thing that i thought was well they did well that drive but uh it was all in all it
00:22:02was a good script and you and you saw the success they went right down the field uh
00:22:06and scored there then yeah they just got away with that and that's like through seven weeks
00:22:13of van pelt coordinating this offense i feel like that's the big thing like he does some
00:22:17good like he has some good designs right like pop douglas orbit thing that was that might
00:22:22have been the other one i was talking about they did that on that drive a few times like
00:22:25that package they installed early in the year that has some encouraging stuff you can see
00:22:29some you know the play action like he has some good ideas but it's just the sequencing
00:22:37and that goes back to like one of the big issues or potential issues when they first
00:22:41made the hire was he didn't have any play calling experience so i think you're starting
00:22:45to kind of see that uh plague them now and you hope he gets better but it's been seven
00:22:52weeks and he's had some of those error repeats and mistakes so um i don't know we'll just
00:22:59see how that looks keep going forward i don't i don't gerard said a few weeks ago they weren't
00:23:04thinking about a mid-season change are you more inclined to maybe make it a mid-season
00:23:08change they have ben mcadoo right on staff if they want to do that you figured that would
00:23:13be who it was but i don't know are you thinking that are you trending in that direction i'm
00:23:19not right now and it's going to annoy some people i know a lot of people want to see
00:23:22macadoo the reason i'm not how many young quarterbacks have we seen ruined because it's
00:23:26you know two oh season three years or four and four or whatever two in the first year
00:23:32like may is right may is succeeding despite all else so far may is succeeding under alex
00:23:39van pelt he's having success as long as that continues it's tough to make a change it's
00:23:46it right it's tough to put that on the kid now that doesn't mean you have to be married
00:23:50to avp forever like you can revisit it after the season and probably should revisit it
00:23:55after the season but it's not like macadoo is this like other world like he got run out
00:24:01of new york right because the offense wasn't good enough so i i wouldn't i think you're
00:24:07creating more problems than you solve it's not worth the risk now if may starts playing
00:24:11really poorly yeah then at that point what are you trying to save but as long as drake
00:24:16may is playing well i just i i wouldn't tweak it too much yep that's why i know a lot of
00:24:23people you know and it's all just people on twitter which isn't real life but they
00:24:27want to talk about these one and dones for all the coaching staff like i have a real
00:24:31hard time seeing it with gerard just because a he has been dealt a bad roster and b you
00:24:37know the relationship with robert craft i have a hard time seeing them go one and done
00:24:40and then with van pelt like if drake may looks good that could be enough for him to keep
00:24:46his job right and you want to keep that continuity we saw it firsthand with mac three coordinators
00:24:51in three years uh how that worked and there as you said there's a lot of other quarterbacks
00:24:57young quarterbacks that have shown that's not a good path to go down so um big picture
00:25:02like long term maybe he's not the best guy for may but if he can help him develop early
00:25:07especially like with the little things like this fundamentals and stuff like that i wouldn't
00:25:11be surprised if they keep avp uh around and he's not one and done either but um i wouldn't
00:25:17rule out him being one and done i i i wouldn't rule it out but an in-season change to me
00:25:23would do more harm than good at this point yeah i'm kind of with you on that but um anything
00:25:30else on the on the coaching staff or uh i mean sort of coaching related so they were
00:25:37yeah no this is coaching related so everybody got all up in arms yesterday about them going
00:25:42for two when they did instead of waiting um i understand the logic behind it i would
00:25:48kick the extra point uh you know that's one you guys know where i'm at with the nerds
00:25:52but like that one bothers me a lot less than you know when like when you're down 14 you
00:25:59score and some teams will go for two right now it's like oh we can kick the extra point
00:26:03to win or we need another extra point anyway i hate that i hate that play play it even
00:26:08just make sure you get the points on the board tie the damn game go to overtime um
00:26:12this didn't bother me as much as that but i would have kicked it that being said i find
00:26:16myself i i can't get fired up about it for two reasons one we'll get to jaylen polk jaylen
00:26:23polk is not good in this game the route that he ran where he fell over on the two-point
00:26:29conversion that's not his route like that's not what he usually does my guess is that
00:26:36that's a play they designed for pop douglas who obviously was sick and couldn't play now
00:26:42on one hand yeah you're you're well on one hand you're a second round receiver you should
00:26:48be able to run a zig route without falling over but yeah on the other hand if you draw
00:26:51play up for a specific player and that player is not available like have another two-point
00:26:55play in the bag what if he gets hurt during the game right you should have multiple two-point
00:26:59plays available and don't call the one for the guy that that's not available that's thing
00:27:03number one that bothered me so like because even if they all right so they kick their
00:27:06point they're down it they have to go for it later so poke falls on his face at the
00:27:09end of the game instead of with eight minutes to go right my issue is more with the call
00:27:13in the decision but what really bothered me is that doesn't matter if you line up on sides
00:27:20on the pat right so they allow the punt return touchdown which is bad enough on its own but
00:27:27to then come out on the ensuing point after and line up off sides which is jelani tovi
00:27:33that did that like you can't that that's a completely avoidable mistake every once
00:27:38in a while punts are gonna get housed like it was a bad kick from Beringer he kicked
00:27:42it down the middle he kicked it too far the coverage missed opportunities all that I get
00:27:45it but sometimes guys get like guys make plays you can line up on sides on a PA take in to
00:27:53not do that now the Jaguars get the one yard instead of the two yard they decide to go
00:27:57for the two-point play and now you're chasing that point the rest of the game like for all
00:28:02the discussion about should they have gone for it or not the whole reason they were doing
00:28:07that was that off sides and again it changed the entire script it changed the entire approach
00:28:11to the game that plays not getting talked about enough today and I put that on the coaching
00:28:16I put that on the coaching get lined up get lined up correctly so that was the other thing
00:28:20that bothered me to buy to like that's a veteran player right yeah and that seems to be a theme
00:28:25to hear the last few weeks like Hunter Henry has who had an awesome game too we can talk
00:28:31about but like second or third false start in the last three or four games and you know
00:28:36Dietrich wise has been getting penalty like you have veteran captains that are just making
00:28:40simple mental mistakes so not good but on the two-point conversion I I like the way
00:28:48to do it that how they did it like I would have went for the two just cuz and I get the
00:28:53way the argument against it like if you make it a one possession game that might send more
00:28:58of a message to your defense being like okay we only need one stop let's go get off the
00:29:03field quick and get the offense the ball back but it's also I'm in the camp like it's better
00:29:08to know what you need right like you don't get the two so now you say okay we know we
00:29:13need two possessions we can coach it to get two possessions back which you know didn't
00:29:17obviously work but so I had no issue with them going for two there but I get the argument
00:29:23against it but I'm in the camp of just go for two so you figure out earlier what you
00:29:27need then later and then yeah Jalen Polk just doesn't slip right like it works and
00:29:31we're probably not even having this conversation so I didn't mind that call but let's talk

00:30:53run your game all right Drake may second career start on pull up his stats very quickly
00:31:01I'm going to do that during the read 2637 276 yards two touchdowns no turnovers which
00:31:09was a nice improvement I felt it was another encouraging start for him I still think like
00:31:16he's seen the field extremely well which is promising for a rookie to have that kind of
00:31:19mental aspect of his game but what did you make of Drake second start against Jacksonville
00:31:25there I thought he's good I you know I I thought he showed growth it wasn't all perfect he
00:31:31still spraying the ball that was my big knock like he still had some non-competitive misses
00:31:35to that probably should have been picked off but besides that I like the way he threw the
00:31:42ball in the move I thought he threw with really good anticipation that was probably the best
00:31:46thing you saw from him this game and you saw he can elevate other players like the
00:31:50past a hunter Henry in the fourth quarter there there aren't many quarterbacks that
00:31:55can make that throw and he kind of put in a spot where Henry had no choice but to catch
00:31:58it so you know arrows still pointing up he's not perfect like he's still got to get better
00:32:03but arrows certainly point in the right direction with him I don't think he was any worse than
00:32:07he was against the Texans which is encouraging yep the sprays what did you think went wrong
00:32:13on that one to Austin Hooper it was like Hooper was right at the one like down by the
00:32:17goal line that was almost picked off it was literally in the guy's hands but it was weird
00:32:21cuz like Hooper was running looked like a corner I don't think may thought he would
00:32:26sit down in the zone but I don't know if maybe he expected him to look earlier cuz it was
00:32:31open or if he was thinking a batch like an earlier back shoulder ball there's just kind
00:32:37of a weird play looked like a miscommunication and that was one of the ones that may have
00:32:42been intercepted like right in the guy's hand so I don't know did you see anything
00:32:45on that that you thought um I'm trying to find the play again so I can watch it back
00:32:50no I I just thought he overthrew it I thought it was one of those things again where he
00:32:54just came out kind of too hyped up and put too much on the ball I don't know what I think
00:32:59it was I know a bunch of people tweeted it I'm trying to find the clip but um can I share
00:33:12my I have the the video play it or are we gonna steal Taylor and Mike's thing let's
00:33:17do it let's let's break out the film room here I'll let me see share screen
00:33:23got that yeah I see it I see it let's let's do it wait wait where is it there it is go
00:33:37ahead play it it's up okay yeah in the film room let's see so yeah right here he runs
00:33:46that like corner oh it's super glitchy is it yeah we hit play again let's see here we
00:33:53go and it's just like behind him yeah like maybe he threw it over the the wrong shoulder
00:34:01but I I thought that I don't know anything else like I don't think he's expecting them
00:34:05to sit down right there right because there is a right grasp but I don't know maybe he's
00:34:10expecting more of like a back shoulder ball right there and he just kind of misses them
00:34:15completely whatever it is like you can't have it like that's that's one of those ones where
00:34:18it's a non-competitive for whatever for whatever reason it's a non-competitive throw yeah yeah
00:34:23so I mean good that it didn't get intercepted and there weren't any turnovers but there
00:34:27were a few like he had the cross sort of KJ Osborne to where he was uh kind of late on
00:34:32it and that might have been intercepted but so yeah he sprayed in college that was a thing
00:34:38but so you'd like to see that get corrected but if you had to correct anything it's better
00:34:44to correct that I would say then you know his yeah that's correctable his eyes look
00:34:48like they're always in the right spots like he's playing well in structure he's hit and
00:34:53hit and throw like he had a couple really good anticipatory throws to Hunter Henry the
00:34:56touchdown to KJ Osborne so I still think it's encouraging I'm still waiting they put him
00:35:02in pistol finally just a handful of times which is nice I'm still waiting for the quarterback
00:35:06run game I don't know if that just had something to do with he was on the injury report with
00:35:11a knee injury right they don't want to maybe run around the field too in London we saw
00:35:15him completely slip and pregame warm-ups taking a drop so I don't know if that was the game
00:35:20they maybe didn't want to break that out but like your run game struggling it can't hurt
00:35:25to try to get him involved in the run game they haven't designed any runs for him but
00:35:30I think it has been encouraging so we'll see that's the Jets defense next week who
00:35:35obviously gave Jacoby Breset some fits so I will be kind of a good litmus litman test
00:35:40there for me but arrow pointed up but let's talk about some of his pass catchers Jalen
00:35:47Polk eventful game for him three targets I don't think the two-point conversion play
00:35:53counts as a target so technically like four but none of them none of them caught none
00:35:59of them went down for drops but a lot of them were in his hands they let defender he let
00:36:04it defenders make plays on the football and then he leaves with a head injury to end the
00:36:08game so where you kind of at with Jalen Polk after another rocky game here that's two three
00:36:15in a row for him so where you at with him yeah look they're obviously not so so there's
00:36:21a difference between a drop in a pass that should be caught but isn't right last week
00:36:25he had drops like outright drops the this is you know there was a defensive back there
00:36:29and he made a play on the ball but you know second round pick top 40 pick receiver you
00:36:35want to see him make a better play on that ball especially got like Polk who has that
00:36:38size and strength to be able to do that and I think the two are related like Trot Mayo
00:36:42said last week Polk was dealing with something mental and it does look like it's in his head
00:36:47and the last thing you want to get in your head as a receiver is catching the football
00:36:52these guys you got to think so much about the route route adjustments right things
00:36:55like that positioning prepare yourself take the hit what you're gonna do after the catch
00:36:59there's a reason these guys catch like 200 balls on the jugs machine a day it's because
00:37:03you want that to become almost muscle memory once you start we talked about this with Juju
00:37:06Smith Schuster this summer once you start overthinking actually catching the football
00:37:12it's really hard to kind of bring the rest of your game along so that to me is what happened
00:37:17like he's just overthinking it he's totally in his head the Instagram post doesn't help
00:37:21because that kind of tells you that it's in his head and I like what do you do right
00:37:27do you sit him down they don't have a ton of other options KJ Osborne made it pretty
00:37:31clear he wants out Tyquan Thornton's been non-competitive he's proven that you can't
00:37:34put him on the field maybe it's time to give Javon Baker another chance I'm actually kind
00:37:39of coming around to this as maybe your wide receiver for so the Osborne he posted that
00:37:44screenshot on Instagram it wasn't his agent or someone like his agent but they said he
00:37:51was going to be inactive they told him on Wednesday he was going to be inactive and
00:37:54then the night before they said he's going to be he was going to be active because you
00:37:58know Javon Baker had an illness do you think Baker like it kind of made it seem like Baker
00:38:02was trying to be active that game right yeah yeah so even more reason like I think well
00:38:08you like he and then Osborne does the call me thing right like that's pretty it's pretty
00:38:12clear what's going on there so yeah I think maybe it was trending that way and maybe it's
00:38:17time and I'm not saying you're done with with Polk like honestly you trapped him in
00:38:21the second round it's it's way too soon to be done with them but you know to use a Bruins
00:38:25parlance do you send him up to the ninth floor for a couple games and let him recollect his
00:38:28thoughts and kind of just take a look at the big picture that might be what the Patriots
00:38:32have to do with Shaelyn Polk right now because he has the ips like he's got a little Chuck
00:38:36Knobloch thing going on and he just has to he has to work through that like that's something
00:38:41that it well and look it'd be nice to be I guess I'll I'll put it this way it'd be nice
00:38:46to be able to work through that in the game it would know because that's the best way
00:38:50to do it but you have a rookie quarterback you're trying to develop and we talked about
00:38:54this with Taekwon Thornton this summer ideally what's best for the receiver and what's best
00:38:58for the quarterback are the same thing that's not really the case right now what's best
00:39:03for Drake May is not what's best for Jalen Polk and you have to defer to drink me because
00:39:07he's the quarterback and he's the franchise so Jalen Polk's gonna have to try to start
00:39:10figuring this out in practice but yeah it might be time to give if not Osborne Javon
00:39:15Baker more of a shot yeah definitely and I hate doing it but like Polk needs to stay
00:39:22off social media they all do oh obviously and this is the whole receiver group it feels
00:39:27like I think every wide receiver has posted something cryptic or said something cryptic
00:39:33to on social media or in the media this year right like started maybe with Jalen Rager
00:39:39posting the Maserati under the garage and then you had pop wasn't as bad but you know
00:39:46he said he was frustrated with the lack of targets you have Keishon booty saying the
00:39:49offense not gonna be aggressive Taekwon Thornton posting to his Instagram story Osborne doing
00:39:56the call me posting the text to his Instagram story and then Polk like he's got a tweet
00:40:02every week after a catch that was clearly an incomplete catch he thinks it's a catch
00:40:08because he doesn't know the rules he's got a tweet about it and now he's posting a peace
00:40:12sign on social media like what are you saying do you think maybe that's what's in his head
00:40:18I I hadn't put those two together I should have like he hasn't been the same since that
00:40:22play the like the heel the toe heel toe foot play because if that's it like dude you just
00:40:28got to get over that like plain and simple so you got it even it was called correctly
00:40:32hate the rules called correctly you got to get over that even that one like did you see
00:40:36in live time like he's watching the video board yeah like he was he was yelling on
00:40:42the sideline like well they're back in the huddle trying to run the next play yeah and
00:40:45they had like I don't know if it was Jacoby or someone else had to be like dude like get
00:40:49in the hole yeah and what like we have a game to still play here so I don't know I hate
00:40:56telling players like they should shut up almost but like you're you're a rookie and it's not
00:41:02going well like and you're not helping your cause like Gerard Mayo said today you know
00:41:07Polk told Mark Daniels a mass live he's got the best hands in the league and then he goes
00:41:11out and I know there's three highly contested catches but like they all three hit your hands
00:41:16and he didn't catch any of them and Gerard Mayo says today like you can't say you have
00:41:19the best hands in the league and then have that happen to you so I think it's just in
00:41:24his best interest to not be doing all this on social media and realizing like hey I'm
00:41:29a I'm a rookie things aren't going well maybe I should just kind of lay low for a little
00:41:34bit here and try to figure things out on the practice field but it's not going that way
00:41:39so we'll see with him I'm definitely not out on Polk again I think he's gonna be a good
00:41:44wide receiver but it is a little like the yips seems like he does have the yips so not
00:41:49not a great start I don't know where's the ninth floor Gillette where can they send them
00:41:54yeah well I mean I they still watch it from the sideline even if they're inactive I know
00:41:59send them up to the gonna go sit up with Elliot Wolfe in the press yeah yeah so may Polk Osborne
00:42:11maybe we see a little bit more J Vaughn Baker I will say Hunter Henry had an awesome game
00:42:17he seems to be like one of May's favorite targets really good feel for some of that
00:42:21off script stuff they connected on another one of those so he looks like mr. consistent for Drake
00:42:27anything else with kind of those skill position guys or even if you want to extend it the offensive
00:42:34line anything else on that offense I mean they all say Keisha booty's been good like Keisha booty
00:42:41continues to be good and and when Drake may come in came in we kind of talked about this thing of
00:42:47who are the guys you're gonna build around who's gonna build with Drake may Keisha booty like
00:42:52sneaky put himself on that list and that doesn't mean he's gonna end up being the wide receiver
00:42:56one but they clearly have chemistry he's proven he can get open down the field like he's that guy
00:43:02I thought J Vaughn Baker was gonna be yeah right there there's not this immense volume to it but
00:43:07once or twice a game he's getting open down the field and if he can give you two catches for 70
00:43:11yards every week like there's a role for that guy okay maybe that's not your true number one but
00:43:16there's absolutely a role for that guy on the football team and that's kind of what we said
00:43:19Taekwon might do right when Taekwon was gonna do too and look the reality is if and when they
00:43:25add that number one if they go out and get like a DK Metcalf or Ted McMillan it's only gonna make
00:43:29it easier for him so credit to him like I I kind of wrote him off a little bit and I know I wasn't
00:43:36alone in that and it's just the consistency wasn't there he's put together a really good month of
00:43:41and there's no reason to think it's gonna slow down for him so yeah good good for him and he's
00:43:48carving himself out a role and there's gonna be a lot of guys when we get to the offseason we say
00:43:51should they still be here yes or no the way he's playing right now he's not a guy that's gonna hear
00:43:56that question like he's gonna be here he's gonna be a part of it definitely and I thought KB had
00:44:02some chances to I know he I think he played 37 snaps so he's gone 16 snaps in his return and
00:44:09then 34 last week then 37 this week so still kind of easing back into things but you know that field
00:44:16goal drive it ended he was open but I don't know do you count that as a miss or a drop it was like
00:44:22fingertips but he got his hands on it yeah you can have it as a downplay for both it's a down
00:44:27yeah but like if that was a little I don't know there was some pressure up the middle I think
00:44:31which may have caused that but you know he might have scored if he got that and then he would have
00:44:36another big play later in the game but Josh Heinz Allen was off sides and got right to May so he
00:44:41missed them so good to see Kendrick Bourne kind of working back into things but just wrap on the
00:44:47offense offensive line it wasn't perfect but it was a little bit better still but then of course
00:44:54like Leighton Robinson goes down so it looks like we might have another offensive line combination
00:44:58next week City so bumped in for him at right guard team high five pressures for him I thought Michael
00:45:04when it was better at right tackle as a pass blocker and just more credit to Ben Brown because
00:45:11again wasn't perfect but like he's holding down the center position better than definitely Nick
00:45:18Leverett and maybe even you know David Andrews had some issues early in the season but Ben Brown
00:45:23has been really sturdy and solid since they they got him in there let me ask you this just kind of
00:45:28looking ahead and we're a little far out for the trade deadline but I got asked in my mail
00:45:34saying it'll be up tomorrow morning 98 5 the sports are calm like who are some guys who the
00:45:38Patriots can maybe trade City so like might get them more than anybody they could deal with the
00:45:45deadline and look I like City so I think he's a good player they clearly don't see him that way
00:45:50or at least not on that level because it's been Michael Jordan over him it's been Leighton Robinson
00:45:55over him obviously Mike on window when he moves back into guard if Ben Brown keeps playing well
00:46:02Cole Strange is probably gonna get added to the mix at guard like in a league that needs offensive
00:46:08line play and he's proven to be solid you probably get more for City so then you get for a guy like
00:46:15Joshua Uche right or Taekwon Thornton he was I'm not he was a fourth round pick fourth round pick
00:46:22yeah so could you get that back maybe like I'm not locking that take in yet I'm not this is this
00:46:28is kind of the evolution of it hey you got to see how long Leighton Robinson's out right
00:46:32he was up with Leighton Robinson let's like it's a bit cold straight afford to ship out
00:46:38any offensive lineman at this point well they couldn't two years ago and they traded Justin
00:46:42Huron so that's that's true I just did just a thought I maybe like you might have to keep them
00:46:50this year just because of the the depth there but maybe that's an offseason thing like I've kind of
00:46:56like if they're not gonna play him and they clearly he's at the very bottom of that depth
00:47:01chart yeah if you're not gonna play him that's a guy you might actually be able to get something
00:47:05yeah cuz he's had some encouraging moments last year and if teams look at this kind of mess and
00:47:11they just look at last year maybe that's and look again I probably wouldn't trade him I think he's
00:47:17your second best guard and I would try him on the left side and him and own when do I think is the
00:47:23best guard combination although Michael Jordan has been good like I don't take away from Michael
00:47:26Jordan but I think city so second best card I just don't think they feel that way and for where
00:47:32they seem to have them on the depth chart there might be more value in moving them yep or I've
00:47:39been kind of warming up and this is way way in advance like Trey Smith if he hits the open market
00:47:45the Chiefs guard like if you could get him in here throw him a bag like then you just have so many
00:47:49guards and then maybe that becomes an offseason thing yeah with city so there but yeah encouraging
00:47:55interesting pre-tape so maybe maybe we'll see what happens like another I still have what two
00:48:01weeks three weeks to lock that in all right let's revisit this it's the fifth it's the first Tuesday
00:48:08November so you have to right over two weeks yeah let's read let's revisit this on this show next
00:48:16week on the Monday show next week and I'll decide if I want to lock it in we'll either hashtag lock
00:48:21it in or hashtag walk it back and you guys can hold me accountable to that remind me ask me and
00:48:26we'll do it again next week and I'll all decide but something to watch something to keep an eye

00:50:12time today what time is it game time all right defense side of the ball I know we talked a good
00:50:19amount of their issues earlier in the show when we were doing coaches but if you just want to
00:50:24highlight any you know defensive players what do you think Christian Gonzalez I see a lot of mixed
00:50:30opinions on him he gave up that deep completion to Brian Thomas kind of a weird like it was a weird
00:50:36cover three look though where he kind of had a run with them but what do you think it Gonzalez
00:50:41yesterday if he was the worst player on defense right now they'd be in great shape like he's
00:50:46still playing at a high level it's it's it's not you know he's not a pure lockdown corner but he's
00:50:51still playing a pretty high level it's an unbelievable throwing catch from Trevor Lawrence
00:50:55and Brian Thomas you see a high level wide receiver can do I to me the issues are still up
00:51:01front like the issues are still with the front yeah if their secondary is their biggest issue
00:51:08they'd be fine yep that was just like a tip your cap play like he was right there like he had great
00:51:14coverage that was just a great throw great concentration I think you only allowed one
00:51:18catch the rest of the game right yeah I think it was like a like a 12 13 yard just like crosser
00:51:23where he might even been out leveraged so I didn't think he had a bad game I saw some people
00:51:29going at him probably just because of that deep shot but I thought he played fairly well but yeah
00:51:33I was in the front there was the front seven and I mentioned like they just doubled the Vaughn God
00:51:38Shaw and then good night everyone else like that that's all it takes the second level wasn't great
00:51:43with Tavai Christian Ellis got a bigger role Rayquan McMillan's role decrease so you know
00:51:50Tavai missed a couple tackles that led to some big runs he's having trouble as we mentioned as
00:51:56an off ball linebacker and so coverage well yeah that's like you know he's got to take on a bigger
00:52:02role and a role that's not suited to his skill set and you're starting to see so it'd be nice
00:52:08to get it out of that role they have to find someone to put in that role like the own talkie
00:52:12talkie was inactive I don't know did you think that was just because the injury like he's not
00:52:17completely ready because it looks like they could use that skill set out there but talkie
00:52:22talkie was inactive and Tavai's not playing well and then yeah Ellis and McMillan just not getting
00:52:30the job done either but I don't know what do you think of talkie talkies absence there I hope it's
00:52:35because of injury and I let me rephrase like I obviously don't hope he's hurt but like that's
00:52:39not a guy you can healthy scratch not when you're having the linebacker issues you are and they're
00:52:43clearly trying to move things around Joshua Uche Keon white both played significantly fewer snaps
00:52:48yesterday but you need somebody to fill those snaps Christian Ellis can't play two different
00:52:53positions so that's a guy they need on the field look he's not healthy can't play I get that but
00:52:58you can't be healthy scratch and I know we had the penalty on the kickoff and Gerard Mayo said
00:53:05like you know we're gonna have some changes don't put him on kickoff you can't afford to not have
00:53:10him on defense yep and you mentioned Keon white like it was a season-low snap count and we kind
00:53:18of had him as one of the players that that might happen to because you know they use them as an
00:53:23early down run defender and a lot of the team's big runs and recently weeks have gone at him but
00:53:28like they just need to get him back to the guy he was early in the season because they had zero pass
00:53:34rush like two pressures Trevor Lawrence I don't think he got hit right there definitely no sacks
00:53:39I don't even think he got a quarterback hit on him yesterday so they they need to get Keon white
00:53:44going again and that goes back to Covington and this is where maybe Mayo can get back to helping
00:53:50like they were one of the best teams in the league last year and scheming up unblocked pressures with
00:53:56these you know creepers and simulated pressures and teams are just sniffing them out completely
00:54:03right now they're not getting any pressure any unblocked pressures on some of that so they need
00:54:08white to get better they need maybe some of the scheme around him to improve I don't know if that's
00:54:12a tell or what's going on there but it's not going well as a pass rush and they need obviously edges
00:54:18is gonna be a big need we talked about moving forward but they need to get they need to try
00:54:23to get Keon white going again and scheme up some pressure there because the you can't go a full
00:54:27game with just two quarterback pressures yeah it's it's it's non-existent again it comes down
00:54:34to just winning at the line of scrimmage and some of that is want to and some of that is effort it's
00:54:38not there right now yep anyone else on defense kind of catch your eye for good or bad or a lot
00:54:47of missed tackles again but just anyone else there I think that's pretty much it and then we mentioned
00:54:55special teams just bad punts yeah right down the middle bad coverage so not a great line Ryan yeah
00:55:04let's talk about it we got a big one coming down on the Patriots we finally got the Patriots beat
00:55:10matchup in the punter league and I lead ten to nine but Brian has Jordan stout tonight so this
00:55:18thing's coming right down to the wire I know and if we tie we have zero we both have zero points on
00:55:25our bench so yeah we get an outright tie we get an outright tie so which would I'm confident in
00:55:32Jordan stout although Ravens Bucks could be a high-scoring game I need Lamar to just put up
00:55:38like I just need points every drive I think you are Derek Henry I need me to get going if he gets
00:55:44one touch back I think I'm screwed because I don't think he's gonna punt enough to he would
00:55:50need like an i-20 with a fair catch and then another fair catch or another i-20 and so he
00:55:56would need at least three total punts if he gets one touch back this is the kind of game though
00:56:01or maybe you pull out a fake punt and you get your 15 points and win easily but it's gonna come
00:56:07right down to the wire tonight so yeah what I should have done I should have moved on the line
00:56:13did Mike blues oh no I thought you were four and two you're three and three Mike's four and two
00:56:22though yeah so he's down three one with Quinn how has JK Scott tonight it could be that well
00:56:34um I'm seven points down on Mike but I'm up eight so unless stout goes like horribly negative well
00:56:43if he goes anything positive and I win then I'll move into second place so yeah big one in the
00:56:49I should have just put Gillen on IR and picked up Matt hack he had 11 points yesterday the
00:56:55giant say he had a big day yesterday didn't he yeah he had well he punted I think he punted
00:56:5911 times so that may not be a bad move for you moving forward I put that IR spot in there for
00:57:07a reason yeah yeah he had 11 punts for i-20s and seven fair catches yesterday so good game for Matt
00:57:15there but yeah comes down to punter league tonight so everyone root for Jordan stout we
00:57:20need fair catches i-20s no blocks no touchbacks or you could just run for a first down like first
00:57:30drive at the game and we'll be all set so that one will be interesting to watch so tune into
00:57:35that one I don't know if he's got any prize picks odds up there for Jordan stout but maybe you can
00:57:42double down there yeah honestly but all right we can wrap it up there or I do have to ask you to
00:57:49did you get any golf in this wonderful I did how'd you hit him hit him well especially with the irons
00:57:56with the PXG irons oh yeah I know we are always looking to improve our golf game so we went to
00:58:03PXG and we got new irons Barth and I and we hit the ball straighter farther and we don't have to
00:58:08worry about hitting everything perfect to make a good shot and again we had went to the PXG in
00:58:14Framingham and upgraded the clubs in our bag we got the black ops irons after a wonderful club
00:58:21fitting up there in Framingham you have to go hit 40 50 balls on the simulator you get all your
00:58:27trackman data you can see your ball speed your distances your club speed everything even helps
00:58:34you hit him straighter again hit him right down the fairway so where'd you play this week anywhere
00:58:40nice fresh pond in Cambridge fresh pond nice nine hole course yeah and the PXG clubs did their job
00:58:47oh yeah straight straight far everything in between so if you guys are looking to upgrade
00:58:54your bag make sure you do so with the PXG clubs to take your game to a whole new level and for a
00:58:58limited time you can save $10 per club if you head over to pxg.com and use code CL and ask that
00:59:04pxg.com code CL and ask to save $10 per club on your order pxg.com code CL and s I think the nice
