00:00I'm joined by Robert Griffin, the third James White field.
00:15Yes, Nina Kimes.
00:16All right.
00:17So first play, we're going to look at second into one of the Patriots first offensive plays.
00:26What's going on, everyone?
00:27Mike Kavlik, Taylor Kailas here for CLNS Media, back with another episode of Pats Daily, powered
00:33by PrizePix and GameTime.
00:35We'll hear from them later, but first, Taylor, it's time to preview Patriots at Jaguars.
00:41We're going to go quick hitter, well, maybe not really quick hitter, but quick thoughts
00:46on the game itself here.
00:47We'll get into the injury report, and then we have some film to break down on three keys
00:52to this Jaguars matchup.
00:53So as we know, Patriots heading over to London tonight.
00:57They're going to head out, I believe their flight leaves in less than an hour.
00:59I was told they're leaving at 6 p.m., so we'll see if that is accurate.
01:04But we should have maybe some more injury news as they officially take off.
01:10But as we know right now, we'll get into a Drake May.
01:13Everyone's talking about the knee and the potential MRI, and if anything's going on
01:17with one of Drake May's wheels, but he was a full participant today in Thursday's practice.
01:23So big news.
01:24It looks like May should be ready to go.
01:26A couple other notes on the injury report.
01:28Vardarian Lowe did not practice once again.
01:31Ramond Reece Stevenson once again did not practice.
01:34So it does not look like things are going well for them as far as their ability to play
01:39in Sunday's game against the Jaguars.
01:41A couple other notes.
01:42Marcus Jones, after not practicing yesterday, was limited today with a groin and an illness.
01:48Isaiah Bolden, full participant with a hamstring injury yesterday.
01:50He was limited.
01:51Devon Godshaw, full participant today.
01:54Marte Mapu, full participant with the neck injury.
01:57The other one, we talked about it a little bit yesterday, but Kendrick Bourne remains
01:59a full participant with that knee injury.
02:02Looks like he's going to be at or around 100%.
02:05Today he said that he's still working himself back up, but him being a full participant
02:08at practice tells me that he is about as good as he possibly can be.
02:12So Patriots, like I said, three times now heading to Wembley to play Jacksonville.
02:17Two teams, one and five versus one and five.
02:20Doug Peterson potentially on the hot seat after the Jaguars are really struggling down
02:25the stretch.
02:26He's going to be there as well, but new head coach, new quarterback here.
02:29So a little different standard, I would say.
02:31The other big thing here, the Mac Jones angle.
02:33He's not going to play.
02:34Trevor Lawrence is still their starter, but Mac Jones, Jaguars backup quarterback, as
02:40we know, former Patriots starter here.
02:43Jarrod Mayo this week spoke a little bit about Mac.
02:45He was asked about if they've taken some, I guess, pointers from the way the Patriots
02:50developed and used Mac Jones as a rookie into Drake Mays development plan.
02:55They did like, they haven't said it directly, but they've insinuated like, you know, in
03:00the past and he didn't do a great job and yeah, right.
03:03But I did, I did like to the Mayo said that, you know, he's friends with Mac and any hopes
03:07he has, you know, continues on and, and has a good rest of his career.
03:10All of that being said, that's the high level stuff.
03:13Let's get into the nitty gritty because that's why Taylor Kyle's was here.
03:16So we have three pieces to this game that are really the top storylines that Taylor
03:21so kindly broke down with film.
03:23First and foremost, the Patriots need to contain Jacksonville running back tank Bigsby.
03:28He is their leading rusher on the season.
03:30He's also averaging seven 2.2 yards per carry on the year.
03:35And last week against the Texans Taylor, the Patriots allowed 192 yards on 28 carries,
03:40which is 6.9 yards per carry.
03:43Not great.
03:44So how do they stop tank Bigsby?
03:45Can they do it?
03:46Take us more in depth on this storyline heading into Sunday.
03:50Yeah.
03:51So tank Bigsby wasn't really their leading running back.
03:53It's been Travis CTN, but he's hurt, may not even play.
03:57So it looks like tank Bigsby is going to be their guy.
03:59Now, as you can see, 41 carries like he's almost 50th in the NFL, not a whole lot, but
04:05very few people have been more efficient.
04:08This dude tank living up to his name, obviously leads the NFL in yards after contact for Rush
04:12leads the NFL and miss tackles force per rush, which has also helped him average the most
04:17yards per carry on the season.
04:18Now, obviously probably not going to average 7.2 yards per carry if he becomes their lead
04:23back, but still very impressive what he's done in a pretty limited sample size.
04:28And like you mentioned, the Patriots run defense now, they've absolutely had their issues,
04:32but I think they've also acknowledged that it's like a few plays here or there, and that's
04:36really what it is.
04:37This isn't the defense is getting gashed every time that the offense is running the ball.
04:41You can see when it comes to positive EPA per play, they're actually one of the better
04:46teams.
04:47They lead the playoffs.
04:48They lead the NFL because they're also getting run on more than most other teams.
04:51Part of that is because their past coverage is very good when they play man coverage.
04:55You really don't want to be in those situations against them.
04:58The best idea is to run the ball.
05:00One thing that stood out to me was their average depth of tackle 4.65 yards.
05:05That basically means that the running back has had a positive Perry and then some before
05:09they're actually contacted.
05:10And with a guy like tank Bigsby, we're going to go through the tape.
05:13When you see this dude's contact balance, you don't want to put those second level defenders
05:18in too many situations where they have to tackle this guy one on one because he's an
05:21absolute beast.
05:22So I'm going to bring up the tape just to give you guys first an idea of what it looks
05:26like when tank Bigby is running the rock.
05:28So for the most part, he's had a lot of success on downhill concepts.
05:32So it's been a lot of dual, right?
05:34The man block power without a polar where you're basically trying to get as many tackles
05:38as you can to the front side of the play.
05:41Also some inside zone where instead of really the blocking, basically going opposite the
05:44back and duo and gap schemes and zone schemes, the running back is going to the same direction
05:50as the offensive line because you're trying to create cutbacks, but those downhill runs
05:54or he's had a lot of success.
05:55But as you'll see here, this dude's got some speed and burst where, yeah, you can defend
06:00the inside and that's going to be the priority.
06:02But if you let him get outside, he can also rip off big gains.
06:05So first off, this dual run against the Colts, he's going to hit right between the tackles
06:10down the teeth of the defense, break all these tackles, carry a defender into the end
06:15zone, get some help from his own guys.
06:17That fumble didn't count, but I'm going to go back one more time.
06:20Yeah, that's a that's a nasty run.
06:23So let's count the missed tackles.
06:24There's one missed tackle, two missed tackles.
06:27Then he's just going to carry this dude.
06:29Then Kenny Moore or whoever that was, try to get more fantastic bounce off him.
06:34Just bounced off him.
06:35Speaking of bouncing, you can also bounce these runs.
06:37So we've seen from Andre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson love to make the defense think they're
06:42going to hit in between the tackles.
06:44Then when they squeeze inside, they bounce it outside and try to force defensive backs
06:47to try to tackle them in space.
06:49That's exactly what it's going to do here.
06:51It's going to see the alley.
06:52They wash everything down, bounce outside, force Jalen Ramsey to try to tackle him.
06:57That ain't going to work.
06:58Luckily, it gets chased to the sideline.
07:00Now we have a fake power toss where they're going to make it look like they're running
07:03power to this side.
07:04With this fullback who's really a tight end, setting the edge, and this guard pulling.
07:09But they're actually going to run a toss to this side.
07:11So we're going to see the fake power action.
07:13You see, they make it look like they're going to run left, or defense is left.
07:17Instead, Tank is actually going to go right, takes this hand off, cuts back, and makes
07:22the first-
07:23Man, he has some nasty vision, huh?
07:25Nasty vision.
07:26And look how he just puts this foot in the ground.
07:28Bam.
07:29Redirect.
07:30Makes this guy miss.
07:31Then EJ Speed tries to bring him down.
07:33Ground tackles ain't going to cut it, my friend.
07:36Then you got the safety trying to tackle him, and I fast-forwarded because he's going to
07:39take that one all the way to the crib.
07:41So once again, Tank Bigsby is an exceptional, exceptional runner.
07:47Really tough to bring down, especially for those defensive backs, so you don't want to
07:49put him in positions to have to do that.
07:52Now I will say, the Patriots last week, or really since week three, as you saw in the
07:56graphic, they have not been a very good run defense.
08:00Like we put it right back up here.
08:01When it comes to where they struggle, it's mostly actually been against outside zone.
08:05You'll see I specifically made it since week three against the New York Jets.
08:09The reason I had that is because that's when they started playing all these Kyle Shanahan-y
08:14and outside zone teams where they try to stretch you vertically, cut back on you, and then
08:19you're in a lot of trouble.
08:21So last week, the Texans had four explosive runs on the Patriots.
08:24Two of those were pure outside zone, but two of them were wham concepts.
08:28Wham, basically, when you use a tight end or a skill player to try to block an interior
08:33defensive lineman, makes it easier for those offensive linemen to get to the second level.
08:38And that's what's been troubling the Patriots, because we know, we talked about it on other
08:41shows, Rayquan McMillan has been a big liability, unfortunately.
08:45And also, teams running at the more pass rush specialist defensive ends are where you're
08:50really going to be vulnerable here.
08:52And the Jaguars do lean on those downhill concepts, but they also run outside zone.
08:56We've also actually seen them run trap and wham play, similar to what we're going to
08:59see in this cut up from the Patriots defense.
09:02So although we expect one thing, and the Patriots have been good against dual and outside zone,
09:07that's really where they're at their strongest.
09:09When you kind of force them to go sideline to sideline, that can be where the vulnerabilities
09:13lie.
09:14So we're going to look at this wham play, right?
09:16Again, this is going to be designed so that the tight end right here, or the H-back, really,
09:20because he's off the ball pretty much, he is going to take Devon Godshaw.
09:24And really, the only reason this works is because Devon Godshaw has to recognize what's
09:28happening.
09:29And by the time the guy makes impact, this is supposed to be a fast hitting play.
09:32We really don't have time to make anything happen afterwards.
09:35So you're going to get a seal here from this tight end, then you're going to get a combo
09:38on Keon White.
09:39That's not even a combo because of the angle that this left tackle, Jeremy Tunsil, is going
09:44to have.
09:45Really, Kenyon Green, the left guard, is going to get right up there to Rayquan McMillan.
09:49Again, going to get a wham block on Devon Godshaw, a double on Daniel Iquale up to the
09:53second level to Kyle Duggar, and then blocking in for Nate Jennings on the backside.
09:58With the running back, I believe this is Joe Mixon in the backfield right now, attacking
10:02this crease where you're trying to split the defensive tackle, and that odd defensive end
10:06this time once again.
10:07Keon White, more of a pass rush specialist in this alignment than he is really a pure
10:12run stopper.
10:14So we're going to see how this goes slow motion.
10:15You see him creep?
10:16Now, you get the contact on Godshaw, you see he's blocked up.
10:20Keon White has been completely washed out of the game.
10:22He's not even on his feet right now.
10:24That's also going to make it harder for Tabai to get off of his gap.
10:27Now we're going to see at that second level, Rayquan McMillan is going to get washed out.
10:32If he doesn't recognize these very quickly, it's tough for him to really stand his ground
10:36and create some traffic in that pile.
10:38So you see plenty of room here for Joe Mixon.
10:40Jelani Tabai tries to get off the block, but he cannot.
10:43And then it's off to the races for Joe Mixon.
10:45Luckily, Jalen Hawkins is able to run him down and keep this from being a bigger play.
10:50But obviously, that's a big explosive.
10:52Now we're going to have another wham play.
10:53Once again, this off-ball tight end blocking Devon Godshaw.
10:57This is going to be more of a pure double team on Dietrich Weiss here with, again, you're
11:01going to have the block.
11:02I'm sorry, this arrow should be here.
11:04I'm stupid.
11:05It should be on Sione.com.
11:06It's all good.
11:07And then you get the backslide blocks on Daniel McAuley, Anthony Jennings with the center
11:11getting right to Marte Mapu at the second level.
11:13Yeah, this guy's, he's such a good tight end, he's going to do two things at once.
11:17All right, anyways, all right.
11:20And once again, running back, once again, Joe Mixon is going to be hitting this gap
11:24between the crease.
11:25So, oh, I put in some motion too fast.
11:29All right.
11:30Now, once again, you get the seal on Godshaw, you get the seal on Sione Takitaki, who's
11:34there right now, instead of Jelani Tavai.
11:37But you're also going to see this double on Dietrich Weiss.
11:40He's solid when he's one-on-one.
11:42But again, he's more of a pass rusher than a run stopper, right?
11:45The reason he's in there is because he gives you more juice if it turns out to be play
11:48action or a straight drop back.
11:50But on this double, he's going to get walked all the way back into Jelani Tavai.
11:55That's like a textbook combo block.
11:57You see with Mike and Wendy, when whoever he's next to in a given week, you know, blocking
12:01those guys and putting them in the linebacker's lap.
12:03You don't like to see that.
12:04Because then no one has to peel off to the second level.
12:06They just bring them together and it's fine.
12:08Yeah, right.
12:09Exactly.
12:10And you also just driving this far off the ball, it gives the running back a chance to
12:12get the head start.
12:13You're also going to see Sione Takitaki, not a great effort from him.
12:17Before you at least saw Jelani Tavai try to get over the block right here, Tavai is
12:21going to get underneath it, completely take himself out of the play.
12:24And then as mixing starts to bounce it, you see Jon Jones is peeking inside.
12:29Can't do that because he is the force player right here, because Kyle Duggar, as you can
12:33see at the bottom of the screen, is supposed to fill this alley.
12:37So Jonathan Jones gets caught peeking inside, digs, gets just enough of them.
12:41He thought it was a penalty, Jon Jones, you're going to see kind of after the play.
12:44I don't know if you can see it on the all 22.
12:45Yeah, he's looking for the flag, but he's not going to get it.
12:48So those kinds of plays where you attack the more pass rushers for the interior of the
12:53defensive line.
12:54And if you can put that first level in the second level's lap, obviously that's going
12:58to be one for the defense.
12:59But also we've mentioned it in some of our pods, Raekwon McMillan could see a smaller
13:03role on early downs, maybe a bigger role for Jelani Tavai to the linebacker.
13:07And then a weak side linebacker, a mix of Christian Ellis, who Demarcus Covington talked
13:11about a bunch today.
13:12And also Sione Takitaki, who, as we saw, can be on the ball or off the ball.
13:16But with Tank Bigsby, whatever they're running, you have to make sure that you are sturdy.
13:20Like run defense.
13:21Anytime we ask these guys, it's really more about effort.
13:24Like, do you want to get blocked?
13:25No, then freaking do something about it.
13:28Obviously size skill sets, those do play a factor, but at the end of the day, these guys
13:32need to be more sturdy.
13:33They have been.
13:34You need everybody to be assignment sound like we saw.
13:37Maybe if Sione Takitaki tries to get over the block, you don't see the bounced run.
13:41So everybody's got to do their job where we heard that before.
13:44And also, I think the coaches need to make sure they're putting the best players out
13:47there to make sure that they are being competitive up front.
13:50Yeah.
13:51But quickly, just before we move on to the next thing and before we start our reads like
13:54do, do you trust these guys to do that?
13:57Right.
13:58Because we talk about a new, new starting lineup and you're going to have more early
14:02downs for, for Tavai on the inside and kind of changing up things on the outside with
14:07with Takitaki and even a Christian Ellis out there.
14:09Right.
14:10So a new, new players in new places mixed with a undisciplined run defense mixed with
14:16a guy in tank Bigsby who can get after it.
14:19Is it as easy as, Oh, just do your job or are they going to struggle with this all day?
14:23I mean, honestly, I think the smart idea when you play the Patriots is always when you get
14:27those five men fronts, like put a target right on Keon white and Dietrich wise, because they're
14:31the only real vulnerabilities.
14:32Right.
14:33Yvonne got y'all leads the NFL and run stops.
14:34Anthony Jennings is third among edge defenders in run stop.
14:38Jelani to buy is very good.
14:39Daniel equality has been pretty stout against the run, but they do have those glaring holes.
14:42And then again, at the second level, it's really wake Rayquan McMillan.
14:46Can they do it?
14:47Yeah.
14:48I think they can, especially because this is more of a downhill scheme.
14:51Can they mix in some more of the outside zone?
14:52The wham?
14:53Yes.
14:54And as we saw, it really took like four plays.
14:56Those forest closest really did make the difference for the Patriots.
14:58I think every single one led to a scoring drive of some sort.
15:01So you got to make sure that the defense that you show on most downs is the defense that
15:06you show when you don't know when these opportunities are going to happen, but it's consistent enough
15:11that you don't have to look back and say, why did we allow a hundred yards, almost 200
15:15yards on the ground?
15:16Because this has been multiple weeks now, Patriots allowing a hundred yards on the ground.
15:20I don't care who's out there.
15:21That is completely unacceptable.
15:22Whether, like we said, it has to be a personnel thing, whatever it is, you can't have another
15:27performance like that.
15:28So make sure that upfront you are stout in the second level.
15:31They've been much better at tackling in the past few weeks, but it's gotta be one of your
15:35best performances of the season.
15:36Yeah.
15:37Those, the, the tackling problems we saw against the Jacks hasn't really been persistent over
15:40the last couple of weeks, but those explosive runs killed them last week.
15:43A guy in tag Bigsby, who was one of the best in football at it right now going to be, um,
15:47I would say a tough matchup.
15:48Go for it, Taylor.
15:49You got another thought.
15:50I'm so sorry.
15:51One more thing I wanted to mention is all the reason that the run defense struggling
15:54has been such a problem is because one also teams are still in the game.
15:58The Patriots aren't really blowing anybody out, right?
16:00Right.
16:01Knowing that there's a threat of the run makes it harder to defend play action.
16:04And I talked to Dante Hightower about it because they get picked apart on these throws
16:08over the middle downfield off play action.
16:09I'm asking, how do you really, you know, um, how do you help your second level in those
16:13situations?
16:14Because it's so hard to respect the run and get depth on those routes.
16:18And he said, you've got to stop the run and keep teams from wanting to do that to you.
16:21The Jaguars, a lot of their explosives have come off play action and on a lot of it's
16:26like deep curls.
16:27We're not really going to talk about the Jaguars passing game in this because they lead the
16:31NFL and drop rate.
16:33Trevor Lawrence is up and down.
16:34The offensive line is super up and down.
16:36Like, I don't really think that's very interesting for everybody who wants to know Patriot stuff.
16:40And we know their secondary is a strength, but if you can stop the run, mitigate the
16:44use of play action, you're going to make things a lot easier on your past defense.
16:47All right, let's move on to the Patriots offense.
16:50But before we do Taylor quick word from our friends over at prize picks, prize picks is
16:55the best place to get real money sports action with over 10 million members and billions

18:01prize picks.
18:02Run your game.
18:03All right, Taylor, moving on here, we have to protect the edge.
18:09The Patriots have to protect that edge against this Jaguars pass rush.
18:13They could be putting out their seventh offensive line in seven weeks with the Darien low, likely
18:18not making the trip to London, at least right now at 523.
18:22That's what looks like it's going to be.
18:23The case did not practice from the second straight day this week and heading into the
18:27week.
18:28So it looks like I don't even want to say heading into the week, but on the surface
18:32rather, it looks like they'll have an easier time blocking against this Jags pressure rate
18:36because it's the third lowest rate in the NFL.
18:39But they also have two dogs on the outside and Trayvon Walker and Josh Allen Hines.
18:43So take us through it.
18:46How do they do?
18:47They have to worry about these guys.
18:48Obviously they do.
18:49They're two of the premium passwords in football.
18:50They have some of the most pressures in the sport, but overall, they're not really getting
18:54home after the quarterback.
18:55So what's the deal with this Jaguars edge and how did the Patriots protect Drake may?
18:59Yeah, I know we have a graphic up here.
19:00So I got it.
19:01Hold on.
19:02Okay.
19:03But yeah, these guys are absolute.
19:04That one's not quite it.
19:05But yeah, no, these guys are absolute beast.
19:08So sneak preview for the rest of the show.
19:11We're good.
19:12Okay.
19:13So yes, as you can see, they are both top five in pressure since week four.
19:17All right.
19:18Yeah.
19:19Trayvon Walker's tied for third with Leonard Floyd.
19:20It's actually kind of surprising.
19:21I did not expect him to be up there.
19:23I think a lot of that was because he played the Patriots, to be honest with you.
19:25And then Josh Heinz Allen, who is 14th and Heinz Allen is also fourth among edge rushes
19:30with at least 50 pass rushes in pressure rate during that time.
19:34Now, like you said, they're not always getting home necessarily, but as we know, sacks are
19:39a fluky stat, right?
19:40You don't always know how they're going to come when they're going to come.
19:42But if you are affecting the quarterback and applying pressure, that's really the difference
19:46maker because that is going to put you in position to affect the quarterback, whether
19:50he has to move and he's a second late to the place he's trying to go, whether, you
19:53know, he has to reset and then his mechanics are off, whatever it is, you are putting your
19:58defense in a better position by at least trying to have some effect on the quarterback.
20:02And when you look at the Patriots now, Mike and when he was actually been pretty good
20:06in pass protection at right tackle, we always say he's a pro bowl, maybe all pro guard,
20:11but really a solid right tackle.
20:13Frankly, in the couple of games he was a guard, he was fine.
20:16And I mentioned this at practice.
20:18He's going to be fine.
20:19I'd rather him at right tackle this year, to be totally honest, because he is one of
20:22their best offensive tackles other than maybe Darian low.
20:25I think, honestly, you could argue that he's better than Darian low as well.
20:28So specifically, he has not allowed a sack and I was only allowed one hit when he's been
20:33aligned at right tackle.
20:34Now, the pressure rate is pretty high.
20:36That's one thing about it.
20:37When he's not going to let you hit the passer very often, but sometimes he's literally have
20:40to sprint out there and really just push you to make sure he gives the quarterback some
20:44time.
20:45So obviously that knockdown rates, one of the best in the NFL, again, knockdown rate
20:48tells you people aren't really hitting the quarterback because of him, but they are affecting
20:52the play, which as I said, with these guys, Trayvon Walker and Josh Heinz Allen, that
20:56still is significant.
20:57Demontre Jacobs has been in the opposite end of the spectrum.
21:00Now he is not a starting caliber player.
21:03We know that it's only he's only in his second season.
21:05He's never really been a starter.
21:07He's more of a pure backup, the kind of guy you want to develop into potentially of a
21:11Darian low type where he's a solid spot starter for you.
21:14He has allowed the highest pressure and knockdown rate when aligned at left tackle among any
21:19other player when aligned at left tackle 4% higher pressure rate than anybody else or
21:25the next closest player and 1.5% higher knockdown rate, which again is sacks and hits combined.
21:32It's going to be an issue.
21:33Now I didn't put a lot of offensive line tape on here because unless it's runs, I know people
21:37aren't super excited about offensive line play necessarily.
21:40And you know, we are also on some time constraints as well.
21:42So the big idea is, like I mentioned within when you, you might get the edge on him, but
21:46he's still going to keep you from hitting the quarterback.
21:49When it comes to Demontre Jacobs, his biggest thing, and he's admitted this as he can be
21:52slow to turn the corner and open his hips, which makes it so that it's tougher.
21:57It's easier for guys to get around the edge on him.
21:59And as we saw with the Neil Hunter, as great as his arm length is Demontre Jacobs, guys
22:03can also control his wrists, which makes it harder for him to protect that edge because
22:07Oh, I'm just going to pick up your outside and going to make it a lot easier for me to
22:10get around that edge.
22:12So first we're going to take a look at Trayvon Walker.
22:15Now this dude had three sacks against the Colts that puts him at the lead among edge
22:20defenders since week four, which is when this game happened.
22:24Now again, three sacks in one game.
22:25That's all he's had the past few games.
22:27What they do, but no, he's going up against a very good player in right tackle Braden
22:31Smith and he's going to give him some problems.
22:33Now the first time we're going to see a sneaky, good number one overall pick.
22:38People don't talk a lot about Trayvon Walker.
22:39They forget who he is, but he's pretty damn good once you watch him because I think his
22:43first season he was a little like up and down and people kind of forgot about it, but no,
22:47he's becoming a very, very good player for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
22:50This first play, we're going to see him use speed to power on a strip sack.
22:54Get that power, gets the offensive lineman's hands off him and knocks him back.
22:57Then finish with this rip move to get around the corner, knock the ball out.
23:01Great awareness there makes a big play for the Jaguars.
23:04Then his teammate Josh Heinz Allen recovers.
23:07Now another play, this time he's actually going to win with a cross chop move.
23:11Now this is going to be really well executed.
23:14Gets that length to create some separation between himself.
23:17Then that jump gets him momentum when he chops that outside arm down.
23:20That's going to give him a soft edge.
23:22Finish with the rip move once again, bring down Joe Flacco for a sec.
23:26Now this third one isn't as impressive.
23:28I think it's a breakdown honestly from the Colts, but still capitalize, be advantageous,
23:32win inside.
23:34Don't let the quarterback get away from you.
23:35That's a great play from him.
23:36Now Josh Heinz Allen.
23:38Now also I should have mentioned this.
23:40Really you're going to see Trayvon Walker more against most likely Mike and Wendy on
23:44that right side.
23:45So that's going to be good on good there.
23:47That's going to be a fun fight.
23:48Josh Heinz Allen is a matchup that I don't really like against Montre Jacobs because
23:52this guy's got speed.
23:53He's got a whole lot of moves in his arsenal that he can break out.
23:56This is going to be a very tough challenge.
23:58He put Braxton Jones on skates a few times in this game.
24:01I'm just going to kind of let it run because you'll see the way he's able to use power,
24:05get inside Braxton Jones's frame to create some pressure, helps create a sack situation
24:10there.
24:11Once again, off that right edge, bull rush, pushes it back into Caleb Williams.
24:16This time he's actually going to finish for a sack I believe.
24:19So once again against Braxton Jones, gets in that chest, walks him back.
24:24Looks like, hey, Caleb Williams is saying, I got a nice pocket to work with.
24:28Let me let that thing go.
24:29No sirree Bob, Josh Heinz Allen is right there to bring him down.
24:34And then one more play I'm going to bring up against the Texans, against the earliest
24:38round pick in Blake Fisher, pick before Caden Wallace.
24:42Here he's at left tackle, not his natural position and Josh Heinz Allen, oh my gosh
24:47that is a hard name to say, is going to take advantage.
24:49We're going to get, like we saw with Walker, another cross chop here.
24:52So not power, he's going to show you something else in his arsenal.
24:54So you're going to see it once again, that chop right there.
24:58And then you're also going to see the outside arm, that swipe to soften the edge, finish
25:02with a rip, almost gets to the quarterback, doesn't quite get there.
25:06But again, showing the versatility, he's not just a power guy.
25:09He can also win with technique right there.
25:11So it's going to be a big challenge this week for the Patriots offensive line.
25:15Again, I think Mike and Wenu should be fine against Trayvon Walker.
25:19That's a battle where Walker's going to have his wins.
25:21But ideally, and Wenu doesn't turn it into an actual contact on the quarterback.
25:26DeMontre Jacobs though, we saw last week there were a couple times where he got
25:30beat pretty quickly.
25:31Could Drake may get the ball out of his hands faster?
25:33Yes, he was kind of kicking himself after the game.
25:36Literally on Tuesday or Wednesday, we were in the locker room.
25:39May was still upset about not getting the ball out faster.
25:41And obviously, the knee, however serious it is, whatever, you'd like him to not get hit.
25:46So if DeMontre Jacobs can hold up, but also if the scheme can help him by not creating
25:51a lot of situations where Drake may has to hold on to the ball, and if Drake may can
25:54also help his offensive lineman by getting it out and playing on time,
25:58I think that'll mitigate a lot of this rush.
25:59The interior for the Jags isn't great.
26:02I think that's going to be good because we may see Leighton Robinson at right guard,
26:05left guard Michael Jordan still, Ben Brown, played really well last week,
26:08but it was his first week.
26:10We don't know if there's different things that this team can do to exploit him.
26:13So the interior should be all right.
26:15We just got to make sure that that left edge is secure against Josh,
26:19Hines, Allen, my freaking goodness.
26:22It's all good.
26:23No, to sort of put a bow on that, and for those listening in but
26:27not fully tracking the changes along the Patriots' offensive line,
26:30just Vardarian Lowe not practicing, did not practice again today in Foxborough.
26:34Doesn't look like he's going to make the trip to London.
26:37So ideally, and this is kind of what we think will happen from watching practice
26:42and how they should, I guess, adjust this thing, is moving DeMontre Jacobs
26:46from the right tackle back to the left side in place of Vardarian Lowe,
26:50kicking Mike Onwenu from right guard to right tackle.
26:53And then Leighton Robinson slides in that place with Michael Jordan.
26:57We think continuing at left guard, I know he got hurt the other day at the end of
27:01the game, but likely have him back in on that side.
27:04So turning in their seventh offensive line combination in as many games.
27:10Tough task, tall task for those guys, Onwenu back at tackle for
27:12the first time in a few weeks,
27:14taking on one of the former number one overall pick in Trayvon Walker.
27:17And then on the left side, DeMontre Jacobs making his second or
27:22third start at left tackle.
27:24Left tackle, I think it's his second, because last time he went up against Nick Bosa.
27:27So this dude is really, talk about bringing through a fight.
27:30He's wearing the sombrero again.
27:31Like getting the entire ocean drop on his face for today.
27:34Yeah, tough stuff.
27:35Really nice guy too, yeah.
27:36And he's, honestly, he's really fun to talk to.
27:38Every week when he goes up against these elite rushers, I woke up and I'm like.
27:42How was that?
27:43He's like, he knows it's crazy that he's going up against this level of
27:47competition every week, but you also have to admire the dude.
27:49Like he's hanging in there.
27:50It's not like he's losing every rep.
27:52He's putting some quality moments on tape.
27:54When you're going against elite edge rushers and you're a guy who is not really
27:57a starting caliber player, skill set wise and experience wise, that's going to hurt.
28:01Absolutely.
28:02Tough stuff.
28:02But again, when you have a more mobile quarterback like Drake May in there,
28:07that could potentially help out those guys as well.
28:08So we're going to get into Drake May.
28:10And if Alex, there goes my mic, we're going to get into Drake May.
28:16And if offensive coordinator, Alex Impelt should unleash him.
28:19But before we do a quick word from our friends at game time, head over to game
28:23time and get your tickets to Patriots versus, uh, Jaguars in London.
28:29You can do so for as little as $102 right now on the game time app.
28:35It's a safe, secure, and easy to use app where you get all of the
28:39best tickets for the lowest price.
28:41They also have their new game time picks feature that filters out the fluff and
28:44shows you only incredible deals on great seats, so you don't have to waste your
28:48time searching through thousands of tickets.
28:50They just make the best ones available for you right out front.
28:54Uh, it's the, uh, you can also customize your spot.
28:57They have other, uh, features as well.
29:00Super deals, great deals, amazing deals.
29:02It shows you the best deals anywhere, uh, right in the game time app.
29:06They also have the seat view feature that most apps don't have, where you
29:10can click into your seat and see exactly what the field is going to look like.
29:14So you don't get screwed.
29:15So you don't get put behind a pole.
29:17It's happened to me at Fenway park before.
29:18That's because I didn't use the game time app.
29:20I used a different app and I wound up behind a pole, but not on game time.
29:25Hopefully there's no polls at Wembley stadium either, but if you're taking
29:28the trip across the pond, uh, and haven't bought tickets yet, head over to game
29:32time, use code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase terms apply again, create
29:37an account and redeem code CLNS for $20 off download game time today.
29:43What time is it?
29:44Game time.
29:45It sure is game time.
29:47And you know what else time it is Taylor.
29:49It's time to get to the section of the pod that everybody has been waiting for.
29:55It's Drake May time.
29:55May is making his second start against the Jaguars this weekend.
30:01And we think it's time to unleash them.
30:03Alex van Pelt told us today that a strength of maze is pushing the ball
30:06down the field and doing so accurately, but how do they do it right there?
30:11You know, we're going to go through it all.
30:12Taylor has the film broken down.
30:13He'll go through it first, but first of all, zone beaters, man
30:16off schedule plays.
30:17That's what we're going to go with.
30:18We're going to start with the zone beaters.
30:20So Taylor break it down.
30:22Drake may style for us.
30:23Yeah.
30:23I mean, so first of all, Drake may in his first game as the starting quarterback
30:28kind of blew Jacoby percent out of the water when it came to downfield passes.
30:31Now we know that was not an area of strength for Jacoby.
30:33We don't need to beat that over the head, but yeah, he was bottom three in every
30:36rep in every metric that you see for Drake may and Drake in week six,
30:41specifically he was top 10 as a downfield thrower downfield meaning 10 or more
30:46yards down the field, intermediate to deep, deepening 20 yards.
30:49Jaguars defense has not been good against downfield passes.
30:52They've actually been one of the absolute leakiest defenses in the NFL.
30:56Surprise, surprise.
30:57I tweeted it last night.
30:58Every time I'm studying an offense that's played the Jaguars, I end up seeing the
31:03most egregious coverage breakdowns where it's like a pump will completely get
31:07somebody out of position or like they have no idea what's going on in zone
31:09coverage.
31:10So with that being said, also with their pass rush being pretty inconsistent, I
31:15figured, you know what?
31:16I think that this is obviously outside of the head rushers.
31:19I really do think that this is the week that you can unleash Drake may and have
31:23him air it out and really play to his strengths rather than last week where I
31:26said you kind of had to protect him because the Texans are such a great pass
31:29defense.
31:29But as we saw, he had a lot of success against them and still left meat on the
31:33bone.
31:33So let's get into the tape right here.
31:35Like you said, we're going to start with some zone beating plays.
31:39Now the Patriots really all West coast offenses.
31:42They love it's in every offense, but especially the West coast.
31:45They love their highs, low zone beaters, whether it's Tampa to cover to cover
31:50three, whatever it is, they like to create conflict with underneath defenders to
31:53try to open up lanes down the field.
31:56Now for the Patriots last week, we broken down this play a few times.
31:59They're going to go over it once more.
32:00This high low is going to feature a dig right here.
32:03And then DeMario Douglas is on an option route that he's going to end up taking
32:07outside instead of sitting it down.
32:09Like you can do sometimes in avoidance zone, it's going to go to pop Douglas
32:12here. And the conflict defender is going to be right here, this slot defender.
32:16So we're going to see how this play goes from snap to throw.
32:19So Drake starts left, doesn't like it, goes to the middle, sees that this defender
32:24are this downfield receivers covered.
32:27So what's he going to do? Make a smart decision.
32:29See that defender is out of position.
32:30Go to pop. He's open.
32:32Obviously, pop makes a man.
32:34Miss turns this into a huge play.
32:36Now, the Jaguars defense isn't quite as disciplined.
32:39They don't do as great a job as the Texans do at getting depth on these downfield
32:43routes and zone. So we're going to see very similar concept from pretty much the same
32:47formation from the Texans.
32:48Right. Another West Coast offense is a high low.
32:51This time we're actually going to see the second level throw be the target.
32:55I believe this is Nico Collins, who's going to be the recipient.
32:58And you're going to get this defender who's pretending to blitz as the guy who's
33:02going to be putting conflict.
33:03So quick little window dressing there with this cheap motion.
33:07All right, so we're going to see this defender biting up on that underneath route.
33:11What's that going to do? Open up the second level dig.
33:14C.J. Stroud is going to hit his man for the completion.
33:16That was week four.
33:18Now, last week we saw a similar concept from the Bears.
33:21This time they're in an empty formation and you're going to see this high low.
33:24But instead of the dig, it's going to be more of a post, right?
33:27So it's going to go a little more vertical.
33:29Caleb Williams is going to do a nice job, kind of get a little bit of pump to
33:32influence the underneath defender and throw to the second level post.
33:36Once again, this guy right here is linebacker.
33:39He's going to be the one they're trying to go after.
33:41Also, something I should point out in these split safety zone coverages,
33:45when you go empty, it basically forces you to use a linebacker on a slot
33:50on a receiver if you have two receivers to the same side,
33:53because both safeties are deep.
33:55Some defenses will say, all right, we're not doing that.
33:57You're not going to screw us and have a linebacker against the receiver
33:59and they'll drop this guy and bump the linebacker inside.
34:02But once again, split safeties, these guys are have deep responsibilities.
34:06This slot corner is covering a receiver.
34:08Now you're just going to have to figure it out
34:10with the linebacker against the receiver.
34:12And now we're going to see like any linebacker, he's going to play this poorly.
34:16Really, it's a better job of Caleb Williams using his eyes.
34:19So you can see he's looking underneath the Keenan Allen linebacker says,
34:23oh, I'll take that nice anticipation from Caleb Williams
34:26throwing right behind his earhole into the void and coverage for completion.
34:31Really nice job.
34:32Didn't something similar happen to Johnny to buy this year in coverage
34:35where he played the zone coverage fine and the receiver just ran behind him
34:38because it's just a linebacker in zone coverage that, you know,
34:41it's not ideal in that situation against the forty niners.
34:44And that wasn't even bad.
34:44That's what it was.
34:45It was in your 20.
34:46I think it was maybe more than 20 yards downfield.
34:48Right. Rock pretty. Let it go.
34:50And he's just like, wait, over there, right here.
34:53Like I'm just supposed to take it away because of depth.
34:55But absolutely.
34:56And now we saw Drake may go short and we've seen these other guys
34:59go to the second level.
35:01But we've also seen Drake may hit his second level.
35:04Read it back in the preseason.
35:06Remember this play?
35:07This is when we all got excited about because he apparently missed it
35:09that week in practice, ended up coming back to it and completing it.
35:12Well, another great example, like he showed earlier,
35:15being able to go right to left and find this read efficiently.
35:18So once again, this time he's going to get to the second read.
35:22That's going to be not the second read.
35:23I'm sorry, the second level read.
35:25It's going to go to Javon Baker.
35:26You're going to put this defender right here in the slot in conflict.
35:29So Drake may starting right.
35:32Doesn't like it quickly.
35:33Gets to the left.
35:34Sees that this defender is choking down on Jalen Polk's route.
35:38Drake says, all right, bet I got Javon Baker coming open right behind him
35:42exploits that void in zone and then a little celebration from Javon Baker.
35:46Hope we see more of those sometime soon.
35:48So those zone beaters, right?
35:49I think these high lows, there's also going to be opportunities
35:52at the sidelines because the Jaguars, they play a ton of man.
35:55They also play a lot of cover, too.
35:57We saw Drake May last week, that little pump he gave the cash on booty
36:00and covered it like in two other videos.
36:02I was like, if I put it in this one, I think I'm going to go crazy.
36:05Go back. I promise you can find it in any other film breakdown
36:08we've done this week.
36:09But being able to manipulate the defense and create those openings
36:12against zone coverage will be huge.
36:13Maybe he does it this week over the middle.
36:15But really, ideally, I think we saw a lot from Drake May
36:19and his ability to attack these zone coverages when defenders are looking at him.
36:22Now there's opportunities on the tape with schemes and plays
36:26that they have already in their offense or at least very close variations of.
36:30Let's see if they can do it again.
36:31All right. So that's zone beaters, right?
36:32You talk about one of them was DeMario Douglas on the right sideline
36:35coming out from the slot.
36:36But then the other one
36:38from the exposition and Javon Baker, someone who, you know,
36:41potentially could be a booty or or somebody else this week
36:43as they come across the middle.
36:45But let's talk about man beaters, because Drake May talked about it today
36:49or yesterday, rather, about DeMario Douglas and how you can't cover him
36:52in a phone booth and how
36:54he's a guy who, as soon as you have man coverage on him,
36:56you know, you're going to go to that type of guy.
36:58He's basically turning into his Josh Downs here where he's your go to guy.
37:02You have him man on man.
37:03I trust my guy over yours and I'm going to get in the ball.
37:05So how do they use man beaters against Jacksonville
37:08to potentially take advantage of them defensively?
37:10Yes, sir.
37:11Well, honestly, a lot of the things we've seen in the weaknesses
37:13from Jacksonville's defense are things that we actually saw the Patriots
37:15have success with last week, if not a little differently.
37:18So here we got Alex Pierce as a slow receiver to the bottom of the formation.
37:23Yes. Where is my thing?
37:24There it is.
37:25All right.
37:25And he is going to be covered by the cornerback Brown for the Jaguars.
37:29Now, one thing about this release, it's kind of similar
37:32to what we saw from Booty last week.
37:34But Pierce is actually going to use an inside release this time.
37:37That's going to give him even more room to get outside on this vertical route.
37:41You're going to see him quickly stack the defender.
37:43Not quite like we saw from Mollie.
37:44He smoked him, though.
37:46He smoked him, absolutely smoked him.
37:48Now, this is an alignment that maybe we see Jalen Polk in this situation
37:52because we heard from Alex Van Pelt.
37:53They're messing with the rotations and alignments every week.
37:57Polk's really been the X, and we've seen it times.
37:59He's been open.
38:00He's smoked his guys off the line of scrimmage as well as that isolated receiver.
38:04Maybe he can do it again this week.
38:06But what we know from the tape that we saw is last week,
38:09Drake may had a very similar bomb to Kayshawn Booty,
38:12where, as we've mentioned before, did a great job putting air on it.
38:15And also Alex Van Pelt credited Kayshawn Booty for making sure
38:18the heating gets squeezed to the sideline and giving him space to work
38:21the red line.
38:22And then Drake may give him a perfect ball to beat the tight coverage.
38:25So another vertical route.
38:27Derek Stingley thinks he's even turns back to read the receiver.
38:31But if he's even he's leaving.
38:32Drake may drops in the bucket.
38:34Great play right there on a vertical on the outside.
38:37Now, this is actually going to be a play that we've seen similarly
38:40from the Patriots out of a bunch formation.
38:42Now, obviously, the Browns and the Patriots have nearly identical offenses
38:46when it comes to the playbooks.
38:47But this is going to be a play
38:48where you're going to see Elijah Moore against the rookie Jones
38:52running out route from the inside part of the bunch,
38:54which is going to make it very difficult for this inside most corner
38:57to be able to carry it without getting picked off
38:59because you have four people that crap.
39:02Exactly. So what's from the play?
39:04We're going to see kind of slow plays.
39:06It isn't in a rush to get out of his route.
39:07And look at that pick right there.
39:10Jaguars do not do a very good job in their man coverage.
39:13And that's one thing that I appreciate about the Patriots.
39:14When I watch teams like this,
39:16they do a great job with their spacing.
39:18They know what formations can give them issues and they understand, OK,
39:21this might be coming.
39:22Let me play with more depth.
39:23But as you can see, the corner isn't played with nearly enough.
39:26Like they're basically in a line right here.
39:28He should be a lot further back, ideally,
39:31but he's not going to run right into his own guy.
39:33That out route is going to get open to the sideline.
39:36Easy completion for a conversion.
39:37Now, we saw a similar concept earlier this season
39:41specifically against Miami from the Patriots.
39:44That was to Jalen Poet.
39:45Now, it's not the exact same thing, because we're essentially going to see
39:49is this outside corner one on one against the outside receiver here.
39:53Javon Holland is actually going to end up covering Jalen Poet.
39:56And you basically get a bracket on the point receiver right here.
39:59But it's a similar idea, right?
40:01You're trying to have a lot of traffic that the defender has to work through
40:04before he gets the receiver you're trying to throw to once again,
40:07out route from Poet.
40:08Now you see, he doesn't have to work with all the traffic,
40:11but it's also because he was so far away from the play.
40:13He was already at a disadvantage.
40:15But you see, you have that shallow route that's supposed to suck up
40:18the defense right here.
40:19And then you get room to the sideline.
40:21We've talked about it in other film room.
40:23You'd like to see Jacoby throw this a tick.
40:25Let it go.
40:26Yep. Right here is where you'd like this ball to come out,
40:28knowing that this defender can't get to the sideline
40:30from basically being flat footed.
40:32Put this right there.
40:33Drake May has more arm talent, so the ball can get there faster.
40:36I also think he throws with better anticipation.
40:38That could be a potential man beating opportunity
40:40in obvious passing situations out of bunch looks.
40:44You mentioned Mario Douglas.
40:46This is a play that's similar to what we saw last week from him.
40:48Khalil Shakir, another explosive, very talented slot receiver
40:52with a big arm quarterback.
40:54But if you hit these guys in stride, they could turn it into big plays.
40:56So another rookie from the Jaguars Prince is going to be covering Khalil Shakir
41:01one on one on a shallow crossing route.
41:04As you're going to see right here, Khalil Shakir is going to catch this ball
41:08in stride, really straightforward.
41:10Just misses the tackle, runs right into the end zone,
41:13makes another defender miss.
41:13Great play by Khalil Shakir.
41:15Obviously, those one on one situations where other defenders
41:18may not be in the area because they're looking at their man.
41:20If you miss and your guy outruns you, there's no promise
41:23that that's not going to turn into an explosive play here.
41:26Mismatch Mario Douglas gets a safety in Eric Murray.
41:30He's going to run a slant when this one pretty easily get up in the defense
41:33backs grill.
41:35Went off the release.
41:36You see, Eric Murray tries his best to stay square,
41:38but he opens up right here.
41:40That creates the inside opening for DeMario Douglas.
41:44Drake may hit some in stride.
41:45Well, let me see if I can try to get a little more space.
41:48But as you see, can't catch up to Pop Douglas.
41:51That's a touchdown.
41:52Another opportunity to potentially score when they get near the red zone.
41:55So a lot of these man beaters, once again, it's things
41:58we've already seen from the offense.
42:00So it's been put on tape.
42:02Maybe give it some different look, a little different window dressing.
42:04So it's not quite as obvious.
42:05I don't know if we're going to see that necessarily.
42:07I don't want to get people's hopes up.
42:08But when Drake drops back to pass, he should have opportunities,
42:11whether it's on the go balls, whether it's on the shallow crossers
42:14or whether it's in these bunch looks where you're trying to create picks.
42:17There should be chances for them to get some explosive plays.
42:20I'm excited, Taylor.
42:20It feels like they have some answers to this test right here.
42:23The way the way we're breaking this thing down.
42:24You see, you see, I feel like I'm in my own film study.
42:27You see our offense.
42:27You see that defense.
42:28You see how exactly this all lines up.
42:31And that's why Taylor does it.
42:32All right. One more thing on Drake May before we get out of here.
42:35And it's off schedule plays.
42:36And now maybe there's a chance the off schedule plays don't happen.
42:40If Drake May's knee is actually that upset, but didn't look like he was there.
42:43And I feel like it's going to explode like Juju's.
42:45Yeah, right.
42:46Didn't look like he was wearing a bracelet.
42:48I have practice a full participant in both in both practices.
42:51I think he's going to be OK, Taylor.
42:53I'm sure he's about getting through security right now,
42:56getting on the air to London.
42:58And as we know, Drake May is not only a talented thrower,
43:01but he's also a talented runner.
43:02He can make things happen.
43:04He can make things happen off schedule with his legs,
43:06whether it's creating first down or just creating himself more time
43:09in the pocket outside of the pocket to make a throw down field.
43:12So how can he use those skills against this Jacksonville defense?
43:15Yes, sir. So I'm going to put it up off schedule plays.
43:18First, we're going to see one from CJ Stroud where he's able to get out
43:21of the pocket and make something happen with his arm.
43:24Now gets to the top of his drop very quickly on a slant inside.
43:27You see Josh Heinz Allen, whose name I said perfectly that time.
43:30Look at that interior pressure is going to make CJ Stroud uncomfortable.
43:33Force him off the spot.
43:35Now, Stroud, is he going to move like I need to get out of the pocket?
43:39Yeah, you kind of do.
43:40Because you still got covered.
43:42You still got a pressure bearing down on you.
43:44Does a great job getting out of the stack.
43:46CJ Stroud is a sturdy guy.
43:47It's tough to bring down.
43:49Now, the guy who wants to go through right here is covered.
43:51He's going to do a great job adjusting.
43:53I think that's Nico Collins breaking back inside.
43:56CJ Stroud throws across his body for a completion over the middle.
43:59Kendrick Bourne actually mentioned to us today that with Drake May,
44:02when he scrambles, you don't always necessarily have to go to the sideline
44:04like you would if it was a Mac Jones or a Bailey's nap,
44:07where they don't have quite as much arm strength and torque
44:10to be able to go across their body with velocity.
44:12You want to throw to where they're already going.
44:14We saw last week Drake May could throw it across his body.
44:17We're actually going to see that.
44:18Oh, no, we're going to see that in a second because I put the order
44:22like a freaking dingus.
44:25That's OK.
44:26But it's OK.
44:27As you do that, I did want to just reiterate that thing that KB said.
44:30And you took the words right out of my mouth where you don't exactly
44:33have to go towards like if a guy's rolling right, scramble drill.
44:37Like the normal scramble drill rules as a wide receiver
44:39is run towards the sideline where the quarterback is going.
44:42And don't run the other way
44:43because you don't want those guys throwing across their body like that.
44:46But when you have a quarterback like Drake May, when you have one like CJ Stroud
44:50and again, you're not going to make them throw it all the way across in stride.
44:53But Nico Collins in that play that we just pulled up finds a spot,
44:57finds a spot in the zone there to make that happen.
45:00And that's what Drake may can do with his guys.
45:02What you have up now, right?
45:04Yes, I do, because I got smart.
45:06All right.
45:06So this is going to be the scramble play to Hunter Henry.
45:08We're going to break this down real quick.
45:10So this happened a few times actually happened in both of the clips
45:13that we see from Drake May when the Texans played cover two.
45:16And he saw that the corner in this cloud or underneath zone had vision on him.
45:21You see, he's ready to throw.
45:22Drake said, No, I'm not giving you a chance to pick me off,
45:25which is nice to see in his first career game.
45:27He also showed this in college.
45:28But Matt Jones, I remember his rookie year.
45:31I feel like three of his interceptions were to this exact same type of coverage
45:35where he threw to a zone defender and cover to, I think, Xavier
45:38Howard, like pick six to him either in his first or second season.
45:41Drake May is going to say, Nope, I'm not throwing that.
45:44I'm going to extend the play.
45:46Then he's going to actually use a very subtle pump to get this defender
45:49out of position and help Hunter Henry get open.
45:51So you see that little kind of he picks the ball up,
45:54like he's going to throw somewhere else.
45:56Nope, he's not.
45:57So this defender is flat footed, gives Hunter Henry an opportunity
46:00to shift kind of inside.
46:02Drake may not as far as CJ Stroud, of course, but still throws it across his body.
46:07And that leads to a huge play.
46:08Now we're going to see what can happen if Drake May needs to use his legs,
46:11like we also saw last week.
46:13So this time we're going to see Caleb Williams play fake drops back.
46:18Now he's going to see his primary option, Keenan Allen.
46:21This robber safety is bearing down on the route.
46:23This is out of the progression.
46:24He's going to say, OK, I'll check it down.
46:26Can't do that either.
46:27This guy's about to run down and is going to pick six him
46:29if he tries to throw to the outlet receiver.
46:32But what does he have?
46:33A wide open pocket kind of panics a little bit.
46:36You know, he's he has a good pocket.
46:38So he knows. All right.
46:39Let me see if anybody gets open.
46:40Right. Don't he says, you know what?
46:42Screw it. I'm just going to use my legs and pick up a big game.
46:46Actually, both these plays from CJ Stroud and Caleb Williams,
46:49I believe, came right before halftime as well.
46:52And the Jaguars defense only is kind of funny.
46:56Guess the only defense that's allowed more conversions
46:58on scrambles than the Patriots defense.
47:01The Jaguars.
47:02Damn it. I already friggin spoiled it.
47:05The Jaguars are second most.
47:06The Patriots have the most.
47:07The Jaguars have six.
47:09The Patriots have nine.
47:10Geez, I am in absolute preseason form right here.
47:13No, we're fine. We're rolling.
47:15This has been perfect. Come on.
47:16Oh, my God. I'm too hard on myself. I'm killing.
47:18All right. So this is going to be another example.
47:20Again, scramble play
47:22where Drake made this time is going to use his legs
47:24like we saw with Caleb Williams.
47:26Again, play fake from a shotgun.
47:28Wants to throw this out.
47:29Doesn't have it.
47:30Because once again, this cornerback has vision on him.
47:32Thinks about throwing. Doesn't.
47:34But he has a wide open pocket.
47:35They're going to get outside.
47:37Not as big of a run as we saw last time again,
47:40but still an explosive carry that gets the Patriots past midfield there.
47:44So there's going to be opportunities to scramble because the Jaguars,
47:47once again, have been one of the worst defenses in the NFL
47:50when quarterbacks able to get out of the pocket.
47:52Yeah. Drake Mays knee might affect him somewhat.
47:55But when you have Josh Hines, Allen or Trayvon Walker bearing down on you,
47:59the last thing you're thinking of is, oh, my knee.
48:01You're thinking of, oh, my body, my life, my future.
48:04And you're going to try to get away from those guys and make a gosh darn play.
48:08I think that Drake is going to have opportunities to do that.
48:10So whether it's in structure against man, against zone,
48:13if he's got to do it himself, there's going to be voids in this defense.
48:17The pass rush may give you opportunities to slip away.
48:20We saw it last week.
48:22There were some bad things with the inaccuracy.
48:24You know, gets excited, throws a pick of the strip sack
48:27where he may have missed a read and kind of opened himself up to get hit.
48:30And then he's, you know, all my arm and my shoulder hurts and all that.
48:33He knows that.
48:34I know that he's going to improve.
48:36We'll see how he is in London.
48:37Different circumstance.
48:38You're across the pond, different schedule, blah, blah, blah.
48:41But I really do think this is going to be the week that we see him
48:43maybe this first 300 yard game in his career.
48:45But certainly I think that he's going to have opportunities to air it out.
48:48This is not to be fair.
48:51This is the first in-depth like game plan film room
48:55we've done together in a while.
48:56But Taylor, you convinced me that offensively
48:59this team can go out there and beat the Jaguars
49:01or at least score enough points to beat the Jaguars.
49:03The 300 300 yard game sounds like it can happen.
49:06He can run around on this defense.
49:08He can beat them in zone.
49:09He can beat them in man coverage.
49:10You can do things off platform.
49:11So I ask you, this is kind of impromptu,
49:15but since we haven't done in a while on a Thursday,
49:17we have five minutes before Patriots B comes on.
49:19So if you're watching us now, stay on the channel
49:21because Alex and Brian are coming up at 6 p.m.
49:23But quickly, before we get out of here, Taylor game predictions.
49:27Who do you like?
49:27Final score, Patriots versus Jaguars on Sunday and Monday.
49:31I think I'm going to go Patriots 28 Jaguars 17.
49:36OK, an 11 point win for the Patriots.
49:40I guess I really do think that with Drake Bay, like things are very different.
49:43We just saw this team score 28 points.
49:45Like we don't really see the Patriots score 28 points
49:47unless it's Bailey's happy on the road, you know, against an AFC team in 2023.
49:52So I do think that he's going to, like I said, be able to move the ball,
49:55get some of those chunk plays moving down the field.
49:57It's going to be tough.
49:58Probably no remandering Stevenson.
49:59Antonio Gibson kind of showed last week the offensive line
50:02didn't help him, obviously, but also some of those plays
50:05or Andre Stevenson slips out of tackles.
50:07I don't know if Antonio does that quite as much or quite as frequently,
50:10although he does have that ability.
50:11So I think it's going to be a lot on the passing game.
50:13But I think this will be a solid matchup for them
50:15outside of Josh Hines Allen, potentially versus Demontre Jacobs.
50:19And then with the defense, I think if the Patriots do start fast,
50:21like they said, maybe get themselves out to a lead.
50:24You keep the Jaguars from being able to run, play to your strengths
50:27with the pass defense.
50:28So I do think the Patriots win this one handily.
50:30Also, because the Jaguars seem like they're imploding.
50:32The Patriots aren't in great shape either, but they're at the beginning
50:35where people are going to have more patience.
50:36The Jaguars, like you mentioned earlier, seem like they're becoming
50:39more impatient every week.
50:40So I think the Patriots win this one convincingly and have a nice trip home.
50:45I think so, too.
50:46I do think the Patriots get their second win of the season.
50:48I think it's going to be closer, though,
50:49and I think it's going to be a little less scoring.
50:51I'm going to go 2421 paths where they win the game.
50:55Drake May throws the ball around the yard.
50:57They only let up 21 points, which is really good compared to the 41
51:00they let up last week against Houston.
51:02They keep these guys in check a little bit.
51:04Send the Jaguars home packing and potentially send Doug Peterson away
51:10where I think he's on the hot seat and perhaps unfortunately, by the way,
51:13I don't wish anyone to lose their job.
51:15I know at first hand that it doesn't feel great.
51:18And but yeah, I will say that I think the Patriots win this one
51:22and send the Jaguars to one and six.
51:24So that's going to do it for myself.
51:27And Taylor Kyle's here on this Pat's Daily Film Room
51:30on how the Patriots can beat the Jaguars on Sunday in London.
51:33We'll have you covered here on Patriots Press Pass throughout the weekend.
51:37Our show, Pat's Beat, Bedard, all 32, all the shows.
51:42Andrew Callahan's Pat's Interference.
