00:00The U.N. denounced that the people of Gaza is facing the worst restrictions on human
00:14humanitarian aid since the beginning of the war a year ago.
00:19The president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, confirmed that he will be sworn in on January
00:2310th as president-elect for the 2025-2031 term.
00:28And Pakistan leaders and top officials from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization called
00:33for enhanced cooperation in areas including security, trade and health.
00:38Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisual Studios
00:46in Havana, Cuba.
00:48We begin with the news.
01:08On Tuesday, the United Nations denounced that the population of the Gaza Strip is facing
01:11the worst restrictions on humanitarian aid since the beginning of the war a year ago.
01:16The spokesman for the United Nations Children's Fund, James Elder, said the situation for
01:20children is worse every day than the last.
01:23He kept declaring that the amount of humanitarian aid sent in August to the Gaza Strip was the
01:27lowest in a month since the war broke out, and added that there have been several days
01:32over the past week when no trucks were allowed in.
01:35Elder stressed that earlier in the year, when the U.N. feared famine in the Gaza Strip,
01:39there was real pressure to open new routes and new access points.
01:43However, it is the opposite nowadays.
01:49In Lebanon, the ongoing Israeli shellings in the capital Beirut and southern regions
01:53killed several people.
01:54On Tuesday night, the Zionist army attacked the town of Kana, killing at least 15 people
01:59while 15 others were wounded.
02:01Devastated southern Lebanese town still remembers the 1996 Israeli artillery bombardment, which
02:06killed at least 100 civilians sheltering at a U.N. compound.
02:10In another attack on Wednesday, at least five people were killed, including the mayor of
02:14the town of Nabatyeh, after Israeli airstrikes hit two municipal buildings.
02:19Lebanese Prime Minister Anjoum Mikadi said Israel deliberately targeted a meeting of
02:22the municipal council that was discussing the city's services and relief situation.
02:27The U.N. special coordinator for Lebanon says civilian suffering is reaching an unprecedented level.
02:32In the early morning hours, specifically from last night, Kana town was targeted.
02:44We evacuated some injured individuals to hospitals in Teir, all while under fire.
02:50Last night, we had to pull out of the areas due to the danger,
02:53after ensuring there were no more people alive.
02:56We have civilians trapped under the rubble, women and young men.
03:01We are working on it and hope that in the next few hours,
03:04we will complete the search and rescue operation.
03:08Most the families that are under the rubble are civilian families.
03:12They refused to leave this town to other locations.
03:16They were martyred on their land.
03:18They are blessed to be martyred.
03:21This is our destiny and fate.
03:23All the destruction we see today wants to change our identity, but our identity is in our core.
03:29We will defend our land, honor and dignity by staying on this land and continue to persevere here.
03:40In Palestine, authorities reported on Wednesday that in the last 24 hours,
03:44Israeli strikes have claimed 67 lives and left around 140 injured.
03:49Israeli genocidal forces went on their offensive in central Gaza,
03:52hitting the Al-Aqsa Mosque's hospital.
03:54As a result, Shaban Al-Dallou, a 19-year-old Palestinian student,
03:58was burned to death together with his mother.
04:01Furthermore, the missile wounded other three Palestinians in a drone attack on a car in Sufa,
04:05southern Rafah, killed two people and injured three.
04:09Right after, medical assistance has been provided for the wounded in the still-operating hospitals,
04:13despite the Israeli permanent attacks.
04:15A witness of one of the Israeli shelling told what he saw.
04:18We were sitting in front of them, charging our mobile phones at an ice cream shop.
04:27All of a sudden, a missile hit only to see them on the ground.
04:30They were just selling goods at the stall.
04:32There were four at the stall.
04:34And the street was full of people and cars.
04:36Three cars got also destroyed by the strike.
04:41Iranian Foreign Minister Bashar al-Assad arrived in Jordan where he held a meeting
04:45with his counterpart Ayman Zafari about promoting peace in the Middle East.
04:49At the meeting held in the Jordanian capital Amman, the top officials discussed efforts
04:53to end the crimes and aggressions of the Israeli regime against Palestine and Lebanon.
04:58The Iranian Foreign Minister previously traveled to Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Iraq,
05:03among other countries, and plans to travel to Egypt and Turkey as part of his country's
05:07diplomatic rapprochement with the nations of the region,
05:10seeking to coordinate actions to achieve peace in the Middle East.
05:15And the United Kingdom, together with France and Algeria, have called an urgent meeting
05:30at the UN Security Council to discuss the humanitarian situation in northern Gaza.
05:34Through an official statement, the British Foreign Secretary David Lame informed the
05:39three countries' decisions, taking amid growing concerns for the dire situation in
05:43the besieged region. Precisely, Israel has cut food and food supplies to northern Gaza
05:48since its forces launched their latest ground incursion, topped with the imposition of a new
05:53customs rule on humanitarian aid. In this context, Lame urged Israel to ensure civilians
05:59are protected and routes are open to allow life-saving aid through.
06:04And the head of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees has called for access for international
06:15media organizations to Gaza to report about the situation on the ground.
06:21None of you has been allowed to go to Gaza, which is a pity, and most of the information
06:25that we are receiving are information we are either receiving by every local journalist
06:32or by organizations operating in Gaza. But of course, in a situation like this one,
06:40when we have so many different types of narratives, it is of utmost importance, I believe,
06:46that we continue to ask for the presence or the access of international journalists.
06:54In other news, in northwestern Nigeria, on late Tuesday, over 90 people died and more
06:58than 50 resulted injured in a fuel tanker explosion. According to the local police,
07:04the incident occurred when the driver of a tanker lost control of the vehicle, which tipped over
07:08on a road crossing the Mahiya village in Jigawa state. The tank then exploded as locals rushed
07:13to collect the fuel. A subsequent fire has been put off as of early Wednesday, and the injured
07:20were taken to the Guru Federal Medical Center. Truck accidents are common in Nigeria, a country
07:25that depends on poorly maintained roads for cargo transportation. Precisely last month,
07:29at least 48 people were killed in central Niger state in a similar explosion caused by a fuel
07:35tanker's collision with a truck. And in Kenya, the Senate began the debate on the impeachment
07:45of Deputy President Rigati Gachagwa for abuse of office. This way, the hearing started after
07:50the High Court overturned earlier on Wednesday an appeal made by Gachagwa. The debate complies
07:56with last week's vote by the Lower House of Parliament and the National Assembly to impeach
08:00the Deputy President on 11 charges, including corruption, undermining the government and
08:04stirring ethnic hatred. For his part, Gachagwa has denied all the charges and stated the impeachment
08:10drive is led by allies of President William Pruitt and based on falsehoods calling the
08:14motion a political lynching. Members of Parliament are expected to present their case to the Senators
08:20before the Deputy President defends himself on Thursday.
08:29Let's take a short break, but remember you can join us on TikTok,

08:50Welcome back. The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, confirmed on Tuesday that
09:06he will attend next January 10th to be sworn in as President-elect for the 2025-2031 term
09:12after officially receiving the invitation from the Board of Directors of the National Assembly
09:15of Venezuela. The President informed this from the 4F barracks in Caracas where he headed the
09:21act of transmission of the high command of the General Commands of the Bolivarian National Armed
09:25Forces. In this context, the head of state publicly confirmed that he received the letter
09:30of invitation and that he will formally attend the fulfillment of the oath according to the
09:35Constitution.
09:45I have already received the invitation from the Board of Directors of the National Assembly to
09:51be sworn in as Constitutional President for the period 2025-2031, next January 10th,
10:00before the Federal Legislative Palace, before the Sovereign of Venezuela, and I publicly confirmed
10:07that I have received the letter of invitation and that I will formally attend the fulfillment
10:13of the Constitutional oath according to the Constitution, before whom the winning candidate
10:19is sworn in, once promulgated by the electoral power. This Wednesday, a high-level Venezuelan
10:27communications team arrived in China for a series of meetings with media and government
10:31representatives. The delegation is headed by Communication Minister Freddy Náñez, Deputy
10:35Communication Minister Juan Hilde RodrĂguez, and Telesur President Patricia Villegas. The delegation
10:42will remain in Chinese territory until October 20th. From there, they will travel directly to
10:46Russia to take part in the BRICS Forum, one of the most awaited events of this year.
10:51And the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, signed the Indigenous Authority Decree, which
10:56establishes the rules for indigenous peoples in environmental matters and the development of the
11:00competencies of their authorities. In a ceremony at the Casa de Nariño, President Petro said that
11:05the regulation will grant indigenous communities the same power that the regional autonomous
11:09corporations have, and will establish effective coordination with other authorities and state
11:14entities. On the other hand, Petro also mentioned the importance of the role of indigenous communities
11:19On the other hand, Petro also mentioned the upcoming Biodiversity Summit COP16
11:23to be held in Cali. He affirmed that this is perhaps the most
11:27important international event that Colombia has ever held.
11:37No one can teach any Colombian and any institution in Colombia, in Latin America,
11:44how to build the vital balance between human beings and nature
11:50more than the indigenous peoples of Colombia and the Americas, so this decree promotes indigenism.
12:00We have signed with the President of the Republic the decree that establishes the
12:04indigenous authorities as environmental authorities for their people and their territory. We could
12:10liken this measure to the justice that they already have, and therefore this exercise of
12:15environmental authority over their territories and populations becomes complementary and
12:20concurrent with the exercise of the environmental authorities and the national environmental system.
12:27In Argentina, students are carrying out protest actions in at least 100 public universities
12:32nationwide against President Javier Mele's veto of the university funding law. In the
12:37Buenos Aires University's Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, the General Secretary of the Student
12:42Center, Luca Bonfante, explained that there are assemblies and public lessons taking place at
12:47these takeovers as part of a situation that would continue for the next few days. During the week,
12:53students from the Faculties of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmacy of the National
12:57University of San Luis, as well as from the University of Lujan, Tucumán, Rosario,
13:01Catamarca, La Plata, Salta and La Pampa also joined the protests.
13:16The budget situation, although it was never excellent at the university,
13:21is now at a really critical point. Many professors who have been here for many years have told us
13:26that the university has gone through many hard times, but not like this. The teachers' salaries
13:31are very precarious, and there isn't enough money to run the university.
13:37I've been a professor at the Economics School of the University of Buenos Aires for 15 years,
13:42and I can tell you that this is the worst situation I have been in since I started teaching.
13:47The situation is not good.

14:26Welcome back. Leaders and top officials from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization met in
14:33Pakistan's capital on Wednesday and called for enhanced cooperation in areas including security,
14:37trade and health. SCO member states also called for boosting people-to-people contact
14:43and minimizing the impacts of climate change. The organization was founded in 2001 with the
14:48aim of fostering security, economic and political cooperation across Eurasia.
14:53Its members include China, Russia, Iran, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,
14:58Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
15:04Joint communique of the Council of Heads of Government, signed just now by the leaders
15:11of the SCO member states, is a comprehensive document covering a wide area of cooperation
15:18in the fields of economy, trade, industry, investment, technology development, transport
15:26and connectivity, climate change, public health, culture, poverty alleviation, women and youth
15:35empowerment, etc. In the context of intensifying global geopolitical conflicts, the participants
15:46also exchanged views on regional and international hotspot issues and reaffirmed the determination
15:57and readiness of the SCO to consolidate peace, security and stability in the region and the world
16:08through the joint endeavor of multilateral cooperation.
16:14In the United States, a recent poll conducted by the Hispanic Federation and the Victoria
16:18Latina Foundation indicates that Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris leads
16:22Republican candidate Donald Trump by 56 percent, with 31 percent, among Latino voters in seven
16:28key states. Poll released Tuesday shows that Democratic domination has sparked enthusiasm
16:34among Hispanics in key swing states. According to the poll, Harris leads in each of the seven
16:39swing states, with February ratings in each state ranging from 54 percent to 58 percent.
16:45In addition, this poll, conducted from October 2nd to the 10th, shows that 60 percent of
16:49respondents are more interested in voting in the election after Harris' arrival.
16:59Also in the United States, Boeing factory workers staged a large demonstration in Seattle
17:03on Tuesday to demand better wage deals. This strike was made as a way of increasing pressure
17:08on new CEO Kelly Ortberg to end a bitter strike that has plunged the aircraft maker further into
17:14financial crisis. The factory workers declared that the recent 17,000 job cuts announced by
17:20the company will not deter them from continuing to fight for higher wages and improved pensions.
17:25Washington state's top congressional Democrats added pressure on Boeing,
17:29calling on both sides to reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
17:33Unless we gave up our pension, stagnated wages, took a massive cost shift on health care,
17:39let's not forget the sacrifices our members have already made to secure the jobs right
17:46here in our communities, for our members, those that follow, and everyone else.
17:52The UN warned that nearly three million people have fled Sudan after 18 months of war
17:58in a still-growing exodus, with 25,000 people fleeing to neighboring Chad in the first week of October alone.
18:05Mahmoud Dian Balde, UN's Sudan Regional Refugee Coordinator, said that the three million mark
18:11will likely be crossed in the next two to three weeks. He also pointed out that the fact that the
18:17figures approach three million is a disaster directly linked to the increasing brutality of
18:21the conflict. War has raged since April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the
18:27country's de facto ruler, Abdel Fattah al-Buhan, and the paramilitary rapid support forces led by
18:33his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, and it left tens of thousands dead.
18:45For the Sudanese, because of the brutality of the conflict, because of really the brutality,
18:51the intensification of the conflict, in less than 18 months, we have almost three million people.
18:57These are refugees, asylum seekers, South Sudanese nationals, for example, who have gone back home.
19:03So we're facing perhaps the biggest protection crisis we've seen in recent decades.
19:21Near Bogota, conservationist foundation Tesoros de Colombia has been raising endangered frog species,
19:31including the harlequin poison frog, to curb their smuggling and combat their extinction.
19:36This species inhabits in the Choco region of western Colombia. The frog skin toxins pose
19:41danger for humans, that is why indigenous peoples use them for hunting, while frog
19:45collectors love their colorful skin, turning them into targets for smugglers.
19:51Therefore, the foundation brings these frogs alongside 13 others at a legal lab close to the
19:55capital as a way to combat the illegal traffic of wildlife, which the UN estimates is the fourth
20:01most profitable illicit business. The founder of Tesoros de Colombia shares his views on the matter.
20:07I was the director of a wildlife rescue center and I started to see a very big problem related
20:17to the international illegal traffic of Colombian wildlife. So it became necessary
20:25to think of a practical solution to this problem. So we decided to create Tesoros
20:29de Colombia Foundation as frogs were in serious danger of disappearing if no immediate solution
20:34was found.
20:51In Latin America, five football matches have been held on Tuesday as part of round 10 of
20:56the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification. So far, Argentina is leading with 22 points,
21:03followed by Colombia with 19, while Uruguay and Brazil are on the third and fourth position,
21:08reaching 16-ish. Likewise, Ecuador and Paraguay gain 13, being on the fifth and sixth spots
21:14respectively. Bolivia is very close with 12, and right after comes Venezuela with 11, and Peru
21:20arrives at the end of the table with six points. Eight rounds are left for the top six teams
21:25qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, while the team that obtains the seventh spot
21:32advances to the Inter-Confederation Playoffs.
21:41On October 16th marks the 71st anniversary of history will absolve me,
21:46Fidel Castro's historic self-defense plea in the trial for the assaults on the Moncada and
21:50Carlos Manuel de CĂ©spedes barracks in Santiago de Cuba and Bayamo, respectively, on July 26, 1953.
21:57On October 16th, 1953, at the trial of the Moncadista for the assaults on the Moncada and
22:02Carlos Manuel de CĂ©spedes barracks, Fidel Castro assumed his defense and that of the rest of the
22:07assailants. This defense was later turned into a book, entitled History will absolve me. On June
22:1418th, 1954, from prison, Fidel Castro wrote to his comrades, Melba Hernández and Jaide Santa María,
22:19one of the most important leaders in the history of Cuba, in which he asked them to distribute his
22:25plea for self-defense, in which he described the six main problems afflicting the Cuban people in
22:30the 1950s. We have come to the end of this news brief. You can find this and many other stories
