Week Ahead – Further downpours and then signs of drier weather
This week sees further heavy showers and the threat of thunderstorms for some areas. However pressure could be rising, allowing drier conditions for the end of the week. Alex Deakin has the details.

00:00Hello. Welcome to your weather for the
00:01week ahead from the Met Office.
00:03Now, there are signs of some drier
00:05weather towards the end of the week.
00:08But as you can probably tell, we are
00:10in for some lively weather before
00:11that. Plenty of heavy showers around
00:13over the next few days and the
00:14potential for some
00:16thunderstorms, especially on Tuesday
00:18night and into Wednesday.
00:20More on that in a moment, because, as
00:21I said, overall, towards the end of
00:23the week, there are some signs that
00:25it might start to turn at least a
00:27little bit drier and a little bit
00:28sunnier. Now, for that, we need high
00:30pressure to be in charge.
00:32And this at the moment is how the
00:34pressure maps are looking for
00:35Saturday.
00:36But let's rewind
00:39and go through the rest of the week,
00:40because for most of this week, low
00:42pressure will be controlling things,
00:44bringing those showers.
00:45In particular, we need to keep our
00:47eyes on this area of low pressure
00:48pushing up towards the UK
00:51at the moment.
00:52Right now, we've got low pressure,
00:53different low pressure to the north
00:54of the UK and this weather front
00:56dangling across the country, bringing
00:58a fair bit of cloud around on Tuesday
01:00morning across central areas.
01:01But some places starting sunny.
01:03But here comes the first batch of
01:05showery rain across the south.
01:07Some heavier bursts in that across
01:08the Midlands, East Anglia and the
01:10southeast.
01:11Further north, well, actually fewer
01:12showers on Tuesday across Scotland
01:14and Northern Ireland and a bit more
01:16in the way of sunshine, particularly
01:18over Northern England.
01:19Temperature wise, well, nothing
01:21too spectacular.
01:22We're probably seeing highs in the
01:24high teens, maybe up to 20
01:26or 21 in one or two spots.
01:28But the wind's a bit lighter on
01:29Tuesday, so perhaps feeling a bit
01:31warmer than Monday.
01:32However, it's later on Tuesday
01:35that we're a bit worried about
01:37things coming up from the south.
01:38Some heavy thundery showers likely
01:40to break out across the English
01:42Channel and spread northwards across
01:44parts of the Midlands and the
01:46eastern side of England.
01:47Now, there'll be hit and miss.
01:48Not everywhere you're going to see
01:50these downpours, but they could
01:52cause some problems, particularly
01:53after all the wet weather of last
01:55week across these eastern areas.
01:57Certainly where we catch these
01:59thundery downpours, the roads
02:01will be fairly treacherous, a lot of
02:03spray and surface water around.
02:05And there could be some flooding,
02:06as I said, particularly because
02:08of all the wet weather we had last
02:10week. And the ground is very
02:11soggy at the moment.
02:12So the potential for some travel
02:14disruption, this is on Tuesday
02:15evening and into
02:17Wednesday across those eastern
02:19areas. It doesn't look much on the
02:21pressure pattern, but it's this
02:22sort of set of weather fronts just
02:23moving northwards through
02:25Tuesday night and into Wednesday
02:27that could cause those problems.
02:28As that low starts to pull away,
02:31well, we could see some further
02:32heavy thundery showers across
02:34eastern areas later on on
02:35Wednesday. So that warning is
02:37enforced for Tuesday night and all
02:38of Wednesday.
02:39Further west, well, again, it's
02:41back to that mixture of sunshine
02:43and showers, but probably not too
02:45many showers over southwest
02:46England, south Wales.
02:48Decent chance of some sunshine
02:49here. And again, look at those
02:50temperatures around or
02:52still below average.
02:54For this time of mid
02:55June.
02:56Looking ahead to Thursday, it
02:58looks a bit drier across eastern
02:59areas. Again, it's basically
03:01sunshine and showers, but most of
03:02the showers on Thursday will be
03:04across Scotland and Northern
03:05Ireland again.
03:06They'll be more scattered across
03:07England and Wales, so a better
03:08chance of, again, seeing some
03:10sunny spells.
03:11And again, that means temperatures
03:12could get into the high teens or
03:14low 20s.
03:15But where we see the frequent
03:16heavy showers across Scotland,
03:18Northern Ireland, temperatures
03:19only 13 or 14 at best
03:21for many.
03:22Now, by the time we get to Friday,
03:24we start to see the influence of
03:26the high pressure trying
03:28to build up from the south.
03:30If this moves in, then that means
03:32drier weather is likely through
03:34Friday and into the weekend.
03:36There is some uncertainty, it has
03:37to be said. But at the moment,
03:39we're not expecting as many
03:40showers, certainly for England and
03:41Wales. Large parts of the day will
03:43be dry. But again, closer to low
03:44pressure, there will still be
03:46showers across Scotland and
03:47Northern Ireland at this stage.
03:49And again, well, for
03:5121st of June, the longest
03:54day, these temperatures are below
03:56average, 14 to maybe 17,
03:5818 Celsius.
03:59Now, don't forget, because the sun
04:00is strong at this time of year, a
04:02bit of sunshine could lift those
04:03temperatures a bit high.
04:04It will feel warmer in the sunny
04:05spells, but no really hot
04:07spell of weather on the way.
04:08In fact, the mornings later this
04:10week look distinctly chilly under
04:11this influence of high pressure,
04:13which controls our weather.
04:14It looks like into the weekend.
04:15So it will, I think, be dominant
04:18into Saturday.
04:18But notice where the fronts aren't
04:20too far away.
04:21So although this high looks like
04:22building in and bringing some fine
04:23weather towards the end of the
04:24week, it may not last all that long
04:26at the moment.
04:27And this is a few days away.
04:29So make sure you stay up to date
04:30with the latest.
04:31The weekend looks like it could
04:32start fine, a bit chilly in the
04:34mornings, but mostly fine on
04:35Saturday with some sunshine.
04:36And then the showers may return
04:38through Sunday and into the early
04:39parts of next week.
04:41That's a long way off, though.
