Week ahead - Rain then sunshine then uncertainty 30/09/19
Lots going on with the weather this week. We start with further rain, then turn cold and bright before the remnants of a hurricane bring uncertainty to the forecast at the end of the working week. Alex Deakin has more.

00:00Hello, welcome to your weather for the
00:02week ahead from the Met Office.
00:04There's an awful lot going on over
00:06the next five to seven days.
00:07It kind of breaks down into three
00:09with more wet weather to come over
00:11the next day or two.
00:13There are warnings in force.
00:15If you're after some sunshine this
00:16week, then Wednesday is your best
00:18bet, generally looking dry and
00:20bright. But it is going to be
00:22quite a cold start to the day
00:24with some places seeing a touch
00:26of frost.
00:27And then at the end of the week,
00:28well, there's a lot of uncertainty
00:30thanks to what is currently
00:32a hurricane, Hurricane Lorenzo.
00:35Now, this storm is a long,
00:37long way from the UK at the moment.
00:39It is a pretty powerful storm.
00:41Nonetheless, it will be drifting its
00:42way northwards as it does so
00:44as it approaches the UK.
00:46It will no longer be a hurricane,
00:48but it could throw some wet and
00:49windy weather our way.
00:51Even before that, we do have plenty
00:53of wet and windy weather over the
00:54next couple of days.
00:55As I mentioned, an area of low
00:56pressure bringing rain across the
00:58country during Monday and Tuesday.
01:00And there are warnings in force
01:02really reaching northern Scotland.
01:04Here, it'll be a bright but cold
01:06start to Tuesday, some heavy
01:08showers in the far north, a dull
01:10damp day over parts of northern
01:11England, particularly east of the
01:12Pennines in the south.
01:14It's all about heavy showers
01:15breaking out and
01:17they could cause some problems.
01:19We've had a lot of rain recently.
01:21There'll be a lot of spray and
01:22surface water on the roads where
01:23those showers break out,
01:24particularly through the evening
01:26rush hour. So there may be some
01:28travel disruption.
01:29We do have a yellow warning in
01:30force for that.
01:31Should brighten up in southern
01:32Scotland and Northern Ireland
01:33through the day, get some afternoon
01:35sunshine here, but it won't be warm
01:37temperatures struggling to get into
01:38the teens, particularly chilly
01:40in northern Scotland.
01:41Whereas in the south, if we get a
01:42bit of brightness, actually we could
01:44see highs of 18 or 19
01:46Celsius, but there will be heavy
01:48showers never too far
01:50away.
01:51Now, that low pressure bringing the
01:52showery rain does ebb away on
01:54Tuesday evening and then the winds
01:55start to come down from the north.
01:56That's going to bring a real chill
01:58right across the country on
02:00Wednesday morning.
02:01We will see some pockets of frost
02:03in rural areas anywhere from
02:05northern England northwards.
02:06But even in the south, it's going to
02:07be a lot colder on Wednesday morning
02:09than recent mornings.
02:10Still quite blustery across the
02:12northeast and down the east coast
02:13generally.
02:14A small chance of one or two
02:15showers, but for most places
02:17looking dry and fine on Wednesday,
02:19we should see a fair bit of
02:20sunshine and
02:22yes, as I say, the best chance of
02:24some sunshine through the course of
02:25this week. But look at the
02:26temperatures.
02:27We're only struggling into the
02:28teens in many places.
02:29So that's going to feel quite a lot
02:31fresher on Wednesday.
02:33Then what happens after that?
02:35Well, as I say, there's still quite
02:36a bit of uncertainty about exactly
02:38how Lorenzo changes from
02:40a hurricane into a normal area of
02:42low pressure.
02:43That'll probably happen during
02:44Wednesday or into Thursday.
02:46But even though it's not a
02:47hurricane anymore, you can still
02:49see there's a lot of isobars of
02:50that chart. It could be very windy
02:51and it will be bringing a lot of
02:53moisture and a lot of rain.
02:54But where exactly?
02:56That is still open to some doubt.
02:59At the moment, it looks like
03:00Western areas will see a bit of
03:01that rain coming in on Thursday
03:03and we could also start to see the
03:04winds picking up as well.
03:06But for many, Thursday, again,
03:07looking dry and bright, certainly
03:08to start with, just a question of
03:10how quickly this rain spreads in
03:12associated with that
03:14old storm.
03:15Now, it's not unusual for there to
03:17be this much uncertainty about the
03:18position of something like this
03:20at this stage because it's
03:22highly energetic.
03:23It affects the atmosphere and it
03:25does create more uncertainty.
03:26But this low could drift to the
03:28north and maybe even bend back
03:30round towards Greenland.
03:31It could move more across central
03:33parts of the UK or it could drive
03:35down to the southwest.
03:37And the exact position intensity
03:39of the low will really have enough
03:41impact and effect on the exact
03:43weather that we see across the UK.
03:45It is uncertain at this stage.
03:47So the best thing to do is to keep
03:48up to date. Stay tuned to the
03:50forecast. There is the potential
03:52for a wet and windy spell.
03:53But details will be uncertain
03:55for the next couple of days, at
03:57least. But as I say, keep up to
