00:02In this video, I will explain the ending of Pitch Black, so let's begin.

00:06Released in 2000, Pitch Black is directed by David Toohey and is the first installment

00:10in the Riddickverse.

00:12The movie stars Vin Diesel, Rava Mitchell, and Cole Hauser.

00:16It's a science fiction horror action movie that utilizes the classic group survival storyline

00:20to tell the tale of an antihero's journey.

00:22Set in a world where outer space travel is the norm, Pitch Black follows the story of

00:26a commercial transport spaceship with a vicious prisoner, Riddick, on board.

00:31After some unforeseen space interference sends the ship crashing down to a desert planet,

00:35only a handful of passengers survive.

00:37The survivors at first only concern themselves with finding shelter, a way to escape, and

00:42on Johns's insistence, Riddick.

00:44However, when danger starts lurking nearby in the form of bloodthirsty aliens, the group

00:49soon realizes Riddick is not the worst of their problems.

00:52Eventually, the group's reluctant captain, Carolyn Fry, realizes that the strange planet

00:57with three suns and seemingly endless daylight hours goes through a total eclipse every 22

01:01years, and the next one is approaching fast.

01:04Left with no other options, the group teams up with Riddick in pursuit of survival and

01:08an escape from the doomed planet.

01:11The movie employs an interesting cast of characters and dynamics to keep the story engaging.

01:16Due to the survival-based nature of its premise, it instantly offers the audience with questions

01:20about the characters' fates right off the bat.

01:23Therefore, here's everything you need to know about the ending, just to let you know

01:29Carolyn Fry, a pilot, wakes from her cryo-sleep sooner than she is supposed to when her transport

01:33ship hunter Gratzner is sent hurtling off course onto a planet after taking a hit from

01:37some sort of space debris.

01:40Finding the captain of the vessel dead, Fry and Owens try to stop the ship from crashing

01:43onto the planet.

01:45Fry realizes she has to lose some of the dead weight from the ship but is stopped by Owens

01:49when she tries to get rid of the passengers.

01:51The ship barely manages to avoid a complete crash, and the harsh landing leaves numerous

01:55passengers dead, including Owens.

01:58Among the survivors is a nemesis duo consisting of William J. Johns and his prisoner, Riddick,

02:03an escaped convict.

02:05Johns and Fry take charge of the group of survivors, including a Muslim priest referred

02:09to as a imam, and his fellow young pilgrims, Shatza and her partner Zeke, a kid called

02:14Jack, and an antique enthusiast, Paris.

02:17As the group breaks up to look for water and fix up the ship, they remain on the lookout

02:21for Riddick.

02:22Soon, they come across an old and abandoned geologist's settlement and find a workable

02:26ship there.

02:27However, their victory is short-lived when some mysterious creature ruthlessly kills

02:31Zeke.

02:33After discovering the existence of dangerous nocturnal aliens on the planet, Johns decides

02:37to strike up a deal with Riddick.

02:39As the group prepares for escape, they soon come across an unnerving discovery.

02:43A total and complete eclipse overtakes the planet every 22 years when all three of its

02:48sons are blocked off by another planet.

02:50The last such eclipse had left the entire colony of geologists bathed in darkness, ultimately

02:54leading to their deaths at the hands of the aliens.

02:58And the next eclipse is only a few hours away.

03:01Left to rely upon Riddick and his ability to see in the dark, the group must now somehow

03:05escape this nightmare of a planet with their lives still intact.

03:08Does Riddick betray Carolyn and the others?

03:11Riddick, from the get-go, is painted out to be something almost feral and animalistic.

03:17He's a convicted murderer who seems to have no remorse regarding his actions.

03:21In fact, in the beginning, it isn't hard to think the plot will unfold in a slasher-thriller

03:25fashion with Riddick as the antagonist.

03:27However, as a bigger threat is introduced to the characters, it allows them to see Riddick

03:32in a different light.

03:33Carolyn, similar to Riddick, is initially introduced with graying morals and a self-serving

03:38streak.

03:39Carolyn is the first person who is willing to give Riddick an actual second chance.

03:43However, Johns is the only person who knew about Riddick and the details of his crimes

03:47tries to sway Carolyn's trust in Riddick.

03:50He tells her about how Riddick had previously escaped by killing a pilot and stealing their

03:54ship.

03:55Johns seems to think Riddick plans on doing something similar this time as well.

03:59Therefore, when the group figures out how to make an abandoned spaceship work again,

04:03Johns convinces them to fix everything else up before they journey back to their crashed

04:07ship in order to get battery cells from there.

04:09However, once they do make it back, the time has steadily run out, and the suns start to

04:14eclipse and trap everyone inside the remains of their old spaceship.

04:18As the group gets picked off by the murderous aliens one by one, they eventually come to

04:22two conclusions.

04:23One, light is not just unpleasant to the nocturnal aliens but outright harmful as well.

04:29And two, their only scope of survival is to travel back to the settlement with the bulky

04:32cells.

04:34Led now completely by Riddick, the group travels across a dark desert with barely enough light

04:38to get them by and swarms of deadly aliens at their heels.

04:42After a few run-ins with some of the aliens and an altercation between Riddick and Johns,

04:46the group eventually waters down to just Carolyn, the Imam, Jack, and Riddick.

04:52Things start to look bleak for them when the aliens start tearing into their own, creating

04:55chaos of blood and flesh around the group.

04:58Soon it starts to rain.

05:00With their fire torches almost extinguished, Riddick guides Carolyn, the Imam, and Jack

05:04into a little nook in the rocks.

05:07But Riddick does not join them and instead closes the mouth of the pseudo-cave close

05:11and takes off toward the ship on his own.

05:13However, he doesn't get to escape the planet alone.

05:16Carolyn, after finding some glowing bugs in the cave, follows after Riddick.

05:21At first, Riddick tries to convince her to leave the planet with him and, in the process,

05:25abandon the Imam and Jack.

05:28Carolyn is torn between what is right and what is safe, but she is also weighed down

05:31by the guilt of her previous actions from the start of the story.

05:35She realizes she can't leave the others to die and manages to convince Riddick to go

05:39back for them.

05:40In the end, Riddick rescues the others but loses Carolyn on their way back.

05:45Is Johns dead or alive?

05:47Upon surviving the crash, Johns is at once attacked by Riddick, thus immediately establishing

05:51the rivalry between them.

05:54Johns is the one who captured Riddick and warns everyone else against him.

05:58He's quick to become the implied leader of the group and is generally assumed by everyone

06:01else to be a cop.

06:03However, Riddick reveals to Carolyn that Johns wasn't really a cop but rather a mercenary

06:07who had only imprisoned Riddick for the bounty, on Riddick's head.

06:11Carolyn is reluctant to believe Riddick at first but then walks into Johns as he's taking

06:15a shot of morphine.

06:17Carolyn realizes that Johns could have used the drug to help out Owens but had purposefully

06:20hidden it from the dying man.

06:22With his character already tarnished in both Carolyn's and the audience's minds, Johns

06:26then takes it a step further.

06:28On their journey back to the Settlement's ship, Johns tries to recruit Riddick's help

06:32in using one of the last survivors as bait against the aliens so the rest of them can

06:35escape quicker.

06:36Worse yet, Johns seems to want to use Jack, the young, scared kid, for the bait.

06:41Jack, fascinated by Riddick's toughness and ruthlessness, had started idolizing Riddick

06:45in some ways.

06:47Riddick, probably either fond of Jack or just simply hateful of Johns, or both, decides

06:52not to agree to Johns' plans and instead suggests they use Johns as bait.

06:56As the two fight each other, Riddick eventually manages to slash Johns, making him an easy

07:01target for the aliens, hence leading to Johns' gruesome death.

07:05How can Riddick see in the dark?

07:07One of the most memorable characteristics about Riddick that eventually also helps him

07:10survive through to the end of the movie is his ability to see in the dark.

07:15Riddick often wears a pair of dark glasses but when his eyes are visible, the irises

07:19are seen to have an unnatural metallic sheen to them.

07:22Riddick's eyes make it possible for him to see in the dark while, at the same time, they

07:26also have heightened sensitivity to light.

07:29This is due to the fact that Riddick had his eyes surgically altered.

07:33Riddick had spent a lot of time in prison.

07:35The kind of prison that he had been put in was one where no daylight was present.

07:39Much like the planet when it undergoes an eclipse, Riddick has also been forced to live

07:43in the darkness for a long time.

07:45In order to ensure no one could sneak up on him at the prison and harm him, Riddick

07:49had bribed a doctor to add a surgical shine to his eyes.

07:52With this shine, Riddick is now able to see in the darkness and has to use goggles to

07:56protect them from the light.
