01:01Anopheles is readily distinguished from other mosquitoes
01:04by the fact that she stands on her head
01:06at an angle of 45 degrees or more.
01:10This newly hatched female has not yet touched human blood,
01:13therefore does not contain malaria.
01:17But if we follow her,
01:18we'll soon learn how she becomes a malaria carrier.
01:22Like all thieves and killers,
01:24she works best under cover of darkness.
01:28Locking and barring doors and windows
01:31will not keep this hungry prowler out.
01:33She can enter through a small crack.
01:39What will she find to steal here?
01:42Only a little blood,
01:44which this man,
01:45racked with the chills and fever of malaria,
01:47will never miss.
01:51Assuming her typical angle of 45 degrees or more,
01:55she injects saliva to make penetration easier,
01:58and in a few seconds she begins to feed.
02:03But this man is sick.
02:05Along with his blood,
02:06she's drinking in the parasites,
02:08which cause malaria.
02:11Gorged with disease-laden blood,
02:13she makes her way to some cool, dark place,
02:16where she will rest for several days
02:18and digest the blood.
02:20Although the blood is digested,
02:22the diseased parasites are not harmed in any way.
02:25On the contrary, they multiply to great numbers.
02:30Hungry again,
02:31she flies out as evening falls in search of blood.
02:35This time she carries with her the malaria parasites
02:38with which she is...
02:45Enjoying the peace and plenty of the home
02:47he's worked so hard to build,
02:49this man is healthy and happy.
02:52Little does he suspect he's to be the victim
02:54of this bloodthirsty vampire.
02:58Again, saliva is injected to make penetration easy,
03:02but this time the saliva contains malaria parasites,
03:05which enter the bloodstream.
03:07She dines on healthy blood
03:09and in payment leaves the chills and fever of malaria.
03:15In all probability, this man will not die,
03:18but neither will he truly be alive,
03:21for he'll be continually in poor health,
03:23unable to work and keep up his farm.
03:28Slowly he will lose all he has worked for.
03:31His crops will rot in the fields.
03:33His buildings and fences fall into disrepair.
03:36His livestock will be neglected
03:38and he'll be unable to earn the money
03:40to feed and clothe his family.
03:44Multiply this man's tragedy
03:46by numberless cases all over the world
03:48and we have millions of dollars lost.
03:51As well as untold misery for the victims.
03:54And all because of this tiny criminal
03:57which has assumed the proportions of a monster.
04:03Are there six or seven people in the audience
04:05who will volunteer to help us combat this evil?
04:11Good. Well, thank you, men.
04:14But before we can attack the enemy,
04:16there are certain facts we must know.
04:18The first and all important fact is this.
04:21The Anopheles mosquito must have water
04:24to lay her eggs in.
04:28These eggs float about and soon hatch
04:31into larvae, or wigglers,
04:33which lie parallel to the surface
04:35where they feed and breathe.
04:38In this larva stage, the mosquito is easy to control.
04:42After seven to ten days,
04:44the larva becomes a pupa, or tumbler,
04:47and can still be controlled.
04:49But once she emerges from the pupa as an adult,
04:52she can slip through our fingers
04:54and become a menace to human life
04:56within a mile of her birthplace.
04:58All right, men, now we can begin to fight.
05:09We can start by cutting the weeds
05:11where the mosquito lays her eggs.
05:18This makes it easy for the fish to get in
05:20and eat the wigglers.
05:24Spraying oil on the water
05:26is a sure way of killing mosquito larvae of all kinds.
05:30The oil enters the breathing tube
05:32and promptly kills the wiggler.
05:40Those are wigglers, Dopey.
05:42Give them the oil treatment.
05:48That'll kill them.
05:52Dusting with Paris green
05:54is an effective way of killing wigglers
05:56and is economical for covering large areas of water.
05:59A thin film of Paris green
06:01is strong enough to kill the wigglers
06:03without poisoning the fish.
06:08Mosquitoes must have water to breed in.
06:13These pools will always be a menace to our health
06:16unless we drain the water away.
06:21There's one way of doing it.
06:24Even this hollow stump can harbor mosquito larvae.
06:34Say, that looks like smoke. Let's go in and see.
06:38Attaboy, Dopey. Spray all the dark corners and under things.
06:42You'll find mosquitoes where you least expect them.
06:47Yes, we've got to kill everyone in the house.
07:04The permanent way to get rid of breeding places
07:07is to fill them with dirt.
07:11If you want to keep your house clean,
07:14if you want to keep the rain barrel free from wigglers,
07:17let's put a screen over it.
07:20By covering the cracks in the walls with building paper,
07:23we can keep mosquitoes out.
07:38Anything that holds water for a few days
07:41is a likely breeding place for mosquitoes.
07:44And we can't afford to take any chances.
07:47So we're going to bury these cans.
08:00To be safe from malaria,
08:02we must put screens over all the doors and windows.
08:05Screens can save you a lot of misery.
08:11Attaboy, Dopey. Kill her good and dead.
08:41Attaboy, Dopey. Kill her good and dead.
08:44Attaboy, Dopey. Kill her good and dead.
08:47Attaboy, Dopey. Kill her good and dead.
08:50Attaboy, Dopey. Kill her good and dead.
08:53Attaboy, Dopey. Kill her good and dead.
08:56Attaboy, Dopey. Kill her good and dead.
08:59Attaboy, Dopey. Kill her good and dead.
09:02Attaboy, Dopey. Kill her good and dead.
09:05Attaboy, Dopey. Kill her good and dead.
09:09So leave them to enjoy their every rest.
09:14Free from the annoyance of mosquitoes.
09:18Safe from the dreaded malaria.
09:22And have their peace and happiness.
09:26With the misery and sorrow of this unfortunate place.
09:31And have their peace and happiness.
09:34With the misery and sorrow of this unfortunate place.
09:39And have their peace and happiness.
09:42With the misery and sorrow of this unfortunate place.
09:46And have their peace and happiness.
09:49And have their peace and happiness.
09:52And have their peace and happiness.
09:55And have their peace and happiness.
