00:00The health of the brain is a very important issue for neurologists, but not only.
00:10First of all, the World Health Organization launched a manifesto two years ago
00:16all over the world to draw attention to brain diseases and brain health,
00:23also defining new criteria for what is meant by health.
00:28There is no doubt that, together with the World Health Organization,
00:32neurology, the World Society, the European Society, but also the Italian Society,
00:37which I represent here, decided to fully implement this manifesto
00:42and to start working also in our country.
00:45We have built a platform called the Italian Strategy on Brain Health,
00:51we have involved many scientific societies, we have involved psychologists,
00:58doctors, pharmacists.
01:01We have involved the association of the main neurological conditions,
01:06such as rare diseases, but also multiple sclerosis, dementia, among others.
01:11We have tried to define some objectives,
01:16and among these objectives we have included, of course,
01:21information, training of operators, education,
01:26and also, in some way, investments in research.
01:30On research investments, it must be said that the European Community
01:34has recently established that making brain health a priority,
01:39and has invited Member States to participate.
01:43Numerous funds are likely to be provided for research projects,
01:49and there is no doubt that the world of health and research
01:55will be able to find, in some way, an alliance to make our country a leading country.
02:02Brain health is also important because it perfectly exposes
02:07what the Ministry of Health wanted to underline through the One Health logo.
02:14There is a single health that concerns people, the environment, animals,
02:19and perhaps even the planet itself,
02:24and that provides that every condition, in some way, is linked,
02:30that every disease in the environment is linked to the disease of the body,
02:34and that the disease of the body is linked to the disease of the brain.
02:37We have coined a slogan, One Brain, One Health,
02:41completely consistent with what the Ministry of Health has planned,
02:46to underline how even the brain does not provide for differences,
02:50and that psychologists, psychiatrists, children's neuropsychiatrists, geriatrists,
02:55internal medicine practitioners, but, as has recently been underlined,
02:59even ophthalmologists, otolaryngologists, odontologists,
03:02participate in a process that must guarantee the health of the brain,
03:08and on this we should talk about lifestyles, we should talk about nutrition, physical activity.
03:14In Italy, based on a recent study conducted by Italian and international scholars
03:21on the global burden of neurological diseases,
03:24well, based on this study in Italy,
03:2732 million Italians complain of at least one neurological symptom every year.
03:36Sometimes it can be a banal symptom such as occasional headaches or occasional insomnia,
03:42but let's bear in mind that each of these symptoms could hide a neurological disease,
03:49which, if intercepted early, can be treated early before some consequences,
03:56and there is no doubt that within this we must include cardiovascular pathologies,
04:01like lictus, for example, as well as neurodegenerative pathologies,
04:07such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, myotrophic lateral sclerosis,
04:11and many other conditions that many people are not aware of.
04:16One of these, for example, is the frontotemporal disease, Levy's disease,
04:20all conditions that, together with rare diseases, such as neurological diseases,
04:27and brain tumors, make up the vast number of neurological diseases.
