00:00Hi, my name is Craig Evans. I'm one of the professional referees here at the Welsh Tribunion.
00:04In the next videos now we're going to look at the contact area and we're going to break that down into three sections.
00:14We're going to break this down into three sections, the tackle, the ball placement and the ruck.
00:19Let's start by watching a good tackle technique.
00:22Whenever a tackle is made, I'm looking for these three key points.
00:26The first thing is that the tackle is below the sternum.
00:30The second point is the use of arms in the tackle.
00:33And the third point is that the player is brought to the ground safely.
00:37The following examples are deemed as foul play and not acceptable in the game.
00:41And therefore a penalty kick will be given and possibly a further sanction.
00:46The tackler cannot make contact with the player above the line of the shoulder.
00:50If that player arrives upright into the tackle, then they run the risk of a head-on-head contact.
00:55And therefore we have foul play.
00:57A player must attempt to grasp an opponent with their arms.
01:01The tackler must not lift the player above the horizontal.
01:04If that player is lifted above the horizontal, then they must be returned to ground safely.
01:09Once the tackle has been completed, both the tackled player and the tackler have responsibilities.
01:15The tackler must release and roll away.
01:18The ball carrier must present the ball immediately.
01:22The attacker is allowed one action to present the ball.
01:25Up to under 18s, the ball carrier is not allowed to do the squeeze ball,
01:30which is placing the ball between their own legs.
01:34When the first attacking player arrives at the breakdown,
01:37the player must remain on their feet and in control of their body.
01:41They are permitted to put both hands onto a player on the ground
01:46to keep that shape and secure the ball.
01:49The action of sealing off would prevent a legal contest for the ball.
01:53Looking at the breakdown from a defensive point of view now,
01:56defenders must arrive through the gate and they must arrive on their feet,
02:00making contact with the attacking player in his air legally and binding onto that player.
02:05This now creates a ruck.
02:08Remember, arrive and bind.
02:11What do I mean by the gate?
02:13So the gate in this scenario now is from the player's head here to his boot here.
02:21From a referee point of view, whether you're attacking or defending,
02:25we'd love them to come straight through the middle onto the player.
02:30We will accept a 45 degree angle in here.
02:36What we can't allow is someone coming from this direction,
02:40hitting the player in this position.
02:43We now have a ruck here.
02:45The ball is available for the man to play.
02:48So my focus now goes on the offside line with the defending team
02:52in line with the player's back foot.
03:01Thanks for watching.
03:02I hope that gives you a better insight into how to referee the contact area and the tackle.
