00:00Hi, the movie is here for a short time. Today we are working for you on a drama resume from 2014, based on a true story, titled Against the Sun. Pay attention to the spoilers.
00:09In 1942, an American navigator is ready to attack Japan to avenge what happened in Lucy Harbor by sending torpedo bombers and fighter jets over the South Pacific.
00:19On January 16, pilot and chief Harold Dixon, bomber Tony Pastula and radio operator Gene Aldrich are on a patrol mission when they find themselves separated from other planes and cannot navigate.
00:29Dixon thinks they should go back to their carrier, but Gene discovers that they have run out of fuel and brings them fuel.
00:36Tony throws bombs into the sea to get a hang of it, but it's not of much help, and since they still can't communicate, Dixon decides that he will have to land before he loses his fuel and falls.
00:47The plane certainly lands on the water and Dixon goes out with his life jacket and pulls a life jacket for himself, but his people are not doing so well.
00:56They have problems with ejecting seats and have even almost drowned, and managed to get out in the last second, which means they can't pick up supplies before the plane sinks.
01:05Dixon and Gene also drop their weapons so it's easier for them to float, but Tony stays with him. After some fighting, they manage to inflate the life jacket, although it is turned upside down.
01:15By tying their life jackets and throwing them over the boat, he creates a handle that allows them to pull and turn the life jacket so they can finally drink on it.
01:24Now they just have to wait to be found. The next morning, Dixon and Gene change a few words about what happened, and each person indirectly implies that the other person may have done something wrong.
01:34Since such a conversation does not lead them anywhere, they decide to watch and be on the lookout in case the plane lands.
01:40It turns out that they are lucky and a few hours later the plane flies in the vicinity, but does not come close enough to see them, even when they take off their shirts and wave to him loudly.
01:49The plane is leaving soon, and Dixon explains that this was their only chance. The plane was in search of a framework and will not break the course that could risk entering enemy territory, that is, the war is more important than three soldiers.
02:02The procedure says that everything they get is just one quick look. Thinking about their survival, Dixon declares the life jacket to be the ship of the American sailor, and him to be his captain, so Tony and Gene will follow his orders.
02:14They describe the things they have in their pockets, but that's not much. Mostly tools and household items such as wires, plus an empty water bag.
02:22Gene also has a knife for which Dixon orders him to hold it in his pocket to avoid the risk of cutting the boat.
02:28To protect the boat, Dixon also orders them to take off their shoes and throw them into the ocean, but he does not throw his own, which irritates Gene.
02:36Hours and days begin to pass while they give everything they have so that their isolation does not drive them crazy. They talk about various topics, sometimes they even sing to have fun.
02:46Tony obsessively cleans his gun, but also promises Gene that he will meet his sister, because they will be a wonderful couple.
02:52The sun burns during the day, so he slowly loses every layer of clothing, getting spots on his skin.
02:58The nights are cold, and when they sleep, the night sea chases them, including drowning or guilt for a possible mistake that led them to this situation.
03:07However, the three of them sleep at the same time, one is always awake and changes to watch in case an airplane arrives or they arrive on the island.
03:15During one of these hours, Dixon decides to urinate in his own shoe and drink his urine to at least try to soothe his thirst a little.
03:23One morning, when he feels a nice breeze that moves the boat, Dixon makes some calculations to have an idea of where to go.
03:31There is a chance that he will come to some islands, but he will pass the weeks before that happens, so Gene decides to try fishing so as not to starve to death.
03:40From a wire and a net, he makes a fishing rod that he throws into the sea, but whatever he gnaws, it is stronger than their improvisation with a rod.
03:47Tony has to help Gene pull it, and when they finally find the end of the line, the fishing rod is gone, reminding them that there is some dangerous creature out there.
03:56But Gene does not give up, just make a new fishing rod and throw it again, leaving it in the water as long as necessary.
04:02But in the end, the heat goes to his veins, so he puts on a life jacket and jumps from the boat to freshen up.
04:08Tony wants to follow him, but Dixon says that they should do it one by one for safety.
04:14It also reminds him that there are sea dogs in those waters, which forced Gene to swim back to the boat, and Tony to refuse to jump into the next one.
04:23As the days go by, the tension between the men grows, and Dixon's paranoia forces him to keep asking his people what happened on the plane,
04:30as if he is trying to find someone who will blame him for their situation.
04:35The heat is also starting to be a problem, and Tony thinks that he could drink at least a drop of seawater, but Dixon stops him before he does something stupid.
04:43Gene comments on how many more shoes he can fill with wetland when he is surprised to be interrupted by Dixon, who triumphantly pulls him,
04:50that he found a pencil in the pocket he was looking for before.
04:52Now he can overestimate the schedule and pay attention to which direction they are going, if they want to get to the island, they have to keep the wind in their favor.
05:00Using one of the rescue pliers, something narrow, and some wires, he makes a seaweed.
05:05In this way, they can avoid being taken in the wrong direction if the wind changes.
05:09The second problem is still their thirst.
05:12Gene teaches the other two how to pray and pray to God for rain, but the weather changes only later in the evening.
05:18Laughing at the luck, the men collect as many raindrops on their shirts and bags of water as possible.
05:23After a week of wandering, Gene finally gets tired of the failure to catch the fish, so he takes out a knife, ignoring Dixon's protests and concern for the raft.
05:31After a few sudden hits in the water, Gene is largely successful, he managed to kill the sea dog, which they bring to the boat and open to eat the fish he had recently eaten.
05:41The meat of the sea dog is prepared in their socks to be later used as a bait.
05:46However, this little evening of theirs has serious consequences, because they constantly throw the blood of the sea dog into the sea to keep the boat clean,
05:54other sea dogs have sucked that blood and are now following them around.
05:58So, when one night, sleepy Gene puts his hand in the water, it is bitten.
06:03Fortunately, he takes out his hand before he completely loses it, and Dixon wraps it with Tony's bandage, but the damage is still great.
06:10Two weeks of misfortune have passed, and although they did not get another catch like the sea dog, they have another day of rain to fill their bag with water.
06:18He slowly loses hope, and Tony begins to look at his gun with depressive thoughts in his mind.
06:24Gene takes the gun just in time when the bird lands on their boat and shoots it, causing the body to fall into the ocean.
06:30Dixon does not waste time jumping to return it, but the bird's blood also attracts the attention of the sea dog.
06:37The men try to shoot, but the gun gets stuck, so Dixon has no choice but to swim as fast as he can.
06:43Fortunately, he returns to the boat before they catch him, and now they have a bird's meal and meat for which Dixon thinks he has a taste for chicken.
06:50Realizing that the gun can no longer be used, Tony throws the bullets into the ocean, sad because he begins to realize that they have no chance.
06:58In the morning of the 20th day, Dixon wakes up and discovers that all three were sleeping, so there was no one to guard.
07:05Gene thinks it's not worth the effort, two days have passed without wind, and the islands are getting closer.
07:10He calls Dixon, not realizing how he could have calculated their position anyway, because they didn't even know what their starting point was.
07:17He also thinks it's Dixon's fault that the plane crashed, because he somehow flew off the runway.
07:23After a lot of fighting and fighting, Dixon admits that he expected to see the islands a few days ago and that their course had changed.
07:30His memory is finally activated and he remembers what happened to the plane. He fell asleep.
07:36It was only for a few minutes, but still enough to miss his turn.
07:40He apologizes for his mistake, knowing that he will never be able to make up for it.
07:45Depression falls on the boat, so he tries to fix things, and Gene takes the map and tells them that although it may not be perfect, it is their only hope to return home.
07:56When Tony finds out about the production of his own wind, Dixon gets an idea.
08:00Using Gene's knife, he cuts off the lining of his shoes, which they continue to use for paddling.
08:05A month after the incident, it finally rains again.
08:08Except that this is not an average rain, it is a furious storm with storms.
08:12The waves grow high and become aggressive and eventually overturn the boat.
08:17The men fall into the water and lose several tools they had, including paddling shoes, but the boat is still more important.
08:24They find themselves in the water by holding on to the boat, and together with the wind they return the boat to its position before they fall on it,
08:31clinging close for warmth until the storm passes.
08:34In the morning the rain stopped, but the men are too tired to do anything but lie down.
08:39After they have lost all hope, their conversation becomes depressive.
08:43They discuss what to do with the body if one of them dies because it could be food.
08:47They remember the people who are at home who believe that they are dead and cry to Dixon when Tony and Gene say that they would not send him to court because of his mistake.
08:55Tired of this gloomy mood and thinking that they have gone too far to give up now, Tony convinces his friends to paddle with their hands to at least try.
09:04This tires them so much that Dixon does what he said he would not do, and that is to drink seawater, and Tony falls asleep so deeply that for a moment they believe he is dead.
09:13Suddenly, Gene sits down when he sees something green in the distance.
09:16They have finally found the island.
09:18Desperate enough that they do not care if some enemy has taken it, and with tears in their eyes, the men begin to paddle with their hands until they reach the coastal waves that push them to the last section of the road, that is, to the beach.
09:29The three of them surely stand on the sand, and as soon as they see two boats, they go there on shaky feet.
09:36This docking takes place on February 20, after 34 days spent lost at sea, and sailing with his boat more than 1,000 miles.
09:44After they were rescued, Dixon was awarded the Sailor's Cross because he brought his crew to safety, but he will never fly in a single combat mission again.
09:53Because of the injury, Tony cannot continue his career as a sailor as he wanted, and when he died in 1986, his ashes were scattered on the sea.
10:01Gene served the war as a worker, and in 1946 he married Tony's sister.
