01:04Derbyshire County Council has officially started work to repair a Bakewell Bridge
01:08and remove a decade's worth of padlocks left there by visitors as symbols of love and memory.
01:13And after years of argument over the project, it appears there will be a relatively happy ending.
01:18The local authority started work yesterday
01:21to repair the 25-year-old Weir footbridge over the River Wye
01:24and address corrosion to the steel structure.
01:27Early in the summer, the council had asked people to remove locks where possible,
01:31recognising many held great emotional significance.
01:34And while some people did manage to find the keys or retrieve the locks by force,
01:38there were still thousands in place as council workers set about diversion signs to close off the bridge.
01:43Those locks left will not end up on the scrap heap, however,
01:46thanks to a plan hatched by a committed Facebook campaign.
01:49A spokesperson for Derbyshire County Council said,
01:53Work starts on the Weir footbridge in Bakewell
01:55and we'd like to thank everyone who removed their lock from the bridge
01:58and took care not to damage other locks or the bridge structure.
02:01We've been working closely with members of the Save the Love Locks at Bakewell group
02:05to coordinate the careful removal of the locks to their future home at Thornbridge Hall.
02:09Our thanks to all the members of the group for their help in arranging this.
