00:00You know what? I walk away from this loss that's better than other losses.
00:04Do you remember the Super Bowl last year? Do you remember that game?
00:07Stop it.
00:08No, but do you remember it?
00:09Of course. I watched it eight times.
00:11Alright. Remember what everyone said then and still says today?
00:16Kyle Shanahan.
00:17Not just that. But they should have won. Not yesterday. That's not a shoulda won.
00:25You got beat. You got beat here. You got beat there. You got beat everywhere.
00:32Dr. Seuss.
00:33Offense. Defense. Special teams. Coaching. Did I miss anything?
00:39You missed one thing.
00:40What's that?
00:41One man.
00:42One man.
00:43One man gave you probably, I don't know, 14 points to the good.
00:48Fred Warner.
00:49Fred.
00:50Peanut punch at the two. That saved you seven. Pick at the 15 or 18 yard line.
00:57That saved you at least three, maybe seven more.
00:59Maybe.
01:00And I think that this is where you're going with this.
01:02If Fred Warner maybe had a tummy ache or a sprained toe or, God forbid, COVID from four years back,
01:10you lose that game 34 to 10.
01:12Correct.
01:13So, yes, I'm kind of with you.
01:15You got outplayed.
01:16You got outplayed.
01:17You got outplayed.
01:18He didn't get outplayed.
01:19No.
01:20There was two 49ers that were dominant in that game.
01:23Jordan Mason and Fred Warner.
01:25I'm going to give Debo a little, hey, how you doing, also.
01:27Fair enough.
01:28I'm going to give Debo a little, hey, how you doing.
01:29Debo was great.
01:30Yeah.
01:31Debo, Fred, and Jordan.
01:32So three of 22.
01:33And Nick was good enough.
01:35He was good enough.
01:36Thanks for pointing that out.
01:37Yeah.
01:38I thought he was better than good enough, but we can parse that out with Greg Cosell on Wednesday.
01:42Right.
01:43I'm not going to bed last night being like, Nick.
01:46There's a bunch of stuff.
01:48I'm going to rank the top ten players on that field.
01:51Those four that we just mentioned are probably in the top ten.
01:54But the other six, and if you go to a top 15, the other 11 were all Vikings.
01:59Yeah.
02:00And they're probably Vikings that you haven't even heard of.
02:02They're certainly not on your fantasy team.
02:03Van Stinkle.
02:04Yeah.
02:05Van Stinkle.
02:06And look, all the people.
02:09Ty Chandler.
02:10He was good.
02:11All the big fat guys.
02:13All the fat guys.
02:15Wow.
02:16I'm not trying to body shame them, but they were good.
02:17I like it.
02:18Everybody who.
02:19I like an edgy Willard.
02:20Everyone north of 250 pounds was better on the Vikings than they were on the Niners.
02:26You got outplayed.
02:28And you know what?
02:29That's not the end of the world.
02:31Like, that happens.
02:33But I got two.
02:34If you really want to zero in on two things, to me, and they're related.
02:38So, make them 1 and 1A.
02:40888-957-9570.
02:42We're going to go to the phones here real quick today, okay?
02:44So, line them up.
02:45Why, in your mind, did the Niners lose?
02:49888-957-9570.
02:52We'll take your calls right now.
02:54Play the thing, Grandy.
02:56Play the horn.
02:58Don't do it.
02:59No, play the horn.
03:00Skol.
03:01That's why you lost.
03:03Because Skol?
03:04Yeah.
03:05Because of that damn horn?
03:06They played that on third down.
03:08You sucked on third down.
03:11You absolutely stunk on third down.
03:14Now, here is my attached reason.
03:17Christian McCaffrey, not playing is a problem.
03:22You're still good.
03:24You're not as special.
03:26You're not as special.
03:28And, by the way, that's okay, too.
03:31We play this game in sports radio in the Bay Area because the football team is really good.
03:37We've been doing this for a year and a half.
03:39Well, if we had to lose one player, who would it be?
03:43We play this game.
03:44The bottom line is there's a bunch of guys on the field there that if you don't have them,
03:48the Niners are not quite as special.
03:51So Christian McCaffrey is one of those people.
03:53And if you are specifically struggling when it's third and two, third and three, and third and four,
03:59I happen to believe that McCaffrey of how many did they not convert?
04:04Eight.
04:05He converts three of those.
04:07His presence converts three of those because he's a matchup nightmare in situations like that.
04:14And does that change the game?
04:16Maybe.
04:17Maybe, maybe not.
04:18But that's what I was focused on.
04:20You got beat in the trenches.
04:22Therefore, you are not good on third down.
04:26And Christian McCaffrey's absence has a lot to do with that.
04:31And yesterday will serve as a reason for 49er fans to stop thinking
04:36that the Niners are just going to cruise through the entire schedule
04:39without Christian McCaffrey winning all the games.
04:42Well, there's no cruising through for anybody in the NFL.
04:45And that's, I think, one way we have to all start to look at it
04:48because, as I mentioned in the crossover,
04:50if the over-under is 11 and a half and you like the over,
04:53that means they're 12 and five.
04:55That means five teams beat them.
04:56If you like the under, 11 and six, that means six teams beat them.
05:00Whatever your number is, I don't think anybody is expecting 17 and 0.
05:05So you're going to lose games.
05:07But I think looking at yesterday, it's how you lost it.
05:10And you mentioned McCaffrey, and you're right.
05:12And McCaffrey in many ways is like Steph Curry in the gravity.
05:16If you have McCaffrey on third and short, well, now you have McCaffrey in the run,
05:20McCaffrey in the pass, and that frees up a lot of other guys to maybe get one-on-one coverage.
05:25And when you have Jordan Mason, he's a great runner.
05:28But Stiney was right when he said he's probably an 8 out of 10 as a runner
05:32and a 2 out of 10 as a receiver.
05:34So when you don't have that threat on the field,
05:38and it's third and three, third and four defensively,
05:40you don't have to worry about having to defend him in the pass game.
05:44Yeah, I mean, I think he worked on it all offseason.
05:47He can do it.
05:48He was good in pass protection yesterday, I thought.
05:51He was fine.
05:52But, yes, those little matchups of put him out there on a linebacker on third and three
05:56and there's not a damn thing the defense can do, that doesn't exist.
06:00It doesn't exist.
06:01It's going to be harder.
06:02It doesn't mean they can't do it.
06:05That's my one sentence.
06:06It's going to be harder without Christian.
06:08And, yes, I would predict at least Week 7.
06:13At least Week 7.
06:15Maybe Week 10.
06:16For McCaffrey?
06:17Yes.
06:18Oh, I'm thinking after the bye.
06:19That's Week 10.
06:20Yeah, there you go.
06:21I think that that makes the most sense because then you get him max rest and, you know, you
06:26hope at that point after Week 9, whatever, you'd have eight games in the books.
06:31Maybe you're five and three and you figure, okay, let's make this push for the playoffs
06:36with a fresh McCaffrey.
06:37But, in the meantime, you need another running back because, Gorendo, I'm not giving up
06:43on the kid after one carry.
06:45Yeah, give him more than one carry, can we?
06:47Can we give him more than one carry where, by the way, there was no hole?
06:50Mark, it's not about me giving him more than one carry.
06:53Would they have given him more than one carry?
06:56I don't know.
06:57The one carry I saw, and I saw it the way that Kyle saw it, which was, my God.
07:02Do you know that Kyle saw it that way?
07:04He didn't put him in again.
07:05He also didn't run the ball a ton in the second half because...
07:08The kid got one snap.
07:09I understand that, but the bottom line is the 49ers on Monday night were playing from
07:13ahead and yesterday they were playing from behind.
07:16And that changes play calling.
07:18And John Mason was not gashing the Vikings in the second half.
07:21He was in the first.
07:22He was not in the second.
07:24They were clubbing that up because they were doing what teams are going to do to the Niners,
07:28especially without Christian.
07:29Hey, Brock, what you got?
07:31What you got, dude?
07:33And the bottom line is if he doesn't have time, it's not going to look perfect.
07:38That's true for every single quarterback in the league.
07:41Brock didn't have a great game yesterday.
07:44It wasn't as disastrous as people want to make it out to be because people only want
07:47to look at their, oh, Sam Donald outplayed Brock Purdy.
07:50They're not playing each other.
07:52You can only outplay someone if you're playing on the exact same playing field.
07:55Sam Donald had way more time.
07:57Sam was good.
07:58Brock was not.
07:59But like, yeah, that's what defenses are going to do.
08:02And I love what Brock said to Brian Flores.
08:05Give Brian Flores credit.
08:08For those of you who don't know what he said, he went over to him.
08:10He was heard over microphones after the game and went, dude, your scheme was crazy.
08:14In other words, like, good job.
08:16Good job.
08:17That was hard.
08:18That was hard.
08:19And you got us.
08:21And they did.
08:22Yeah, they did.
08:23And the O-line gave up six sacks.
08:25And Brock Purdy had two pretty bad turnovers.
08:28A pick inside his own negative red zone.
08:31And a fumble that was, you know, the kind of play that you cannot make.
08:36Well, that one was just weird.
08:37Did your eyes dart the way mine did?
08:39I was like, where'd the ball go?
08:40Right.
08:41Like, you know what I mean?
08:42My eyes.
08:43I thought it was a tip pass.
08:44Totally.
08:45I thought it was a tip play.
08:46And it was like, ooh.
08:47That was a straight up like, whoops.
08:48It wasn't even a pass.
08:49It was a fumble.
08:50No, it was a total squirt out of the hand.
08:51Squirt.
08:52That's right.
08:53Dan Dibley here, squirt.
08:54But, you know, either way.
08:55And I just was running the numbers.
08:57And Jordan Mason, I think, had 18 yards after halftime.
09:00And a lot of it's because they abandoned it.
09:02But also, the Viking scheme.
09:05And the 9-0 line.
09:06And I look forward to Grandy's grades tomorrow to see exactly where he will grade everyone.
09:12Because something about Grandy, in a loss, he gets a chance to drop the hammer on people.
09:17Which he likes, by the way.
09:18He does, secretly.
09:19He does.
09:20No, look, I know you don't like this.
09:21The iron fist of Grandy.
09:22You don't like that the Niners lost.
09:23Correct.
09:24But there's like a little twinkle in your eye that you can't see because you're you.
09:27But like, you're, yeah, you're ready.
09:31You're tapping at the bit.
09:32We'll find out tomorrow.
09:33But when it comes to grades, it's like an A-plus is extremely rare.
09:37And F should also be extremely rare.
09:39That's fair.
09:41F is for fair.
09:42That's fine.
09:43I have no issue with that.
09:45F is for a lot of things.
09:46But like, I would guess, since Fred Warner is not a position group, you know, maybe you'll do the linebackers.
09:55Or do we do the front seven?
09:56Front seven.
09:57Yeah, front seven.
09:58And I actually sent him a tweet.
10:00I said, can we grade him separately, please?
10:02Can we have a separate Fred Warner category for the week?
10:05I would guess that that would be the only good grade, if you correct.
10:09Like, no one's going to get a good grade.
10:11Yeah, I had people on the postgame show last night say, Warner, Bosa, Kittle get A's.
10:16Everyone else gets F's.
10:17Well, Mason and Debo do not get F's.
10:20Mason and Debo, sure.
10:21Mason and Debo do not get F's.
10:22But I hear you.
10:23No position group's going to get a good grade.
10:24Yeah.
10:25Quarterback, no.
10:26You know, coaching, no.
10:28Front seven, no.
10:29Secondary, good God.
10:30Man.
10:31Special teams, holy hell.
10:32Right.
10:33You know what I mean?
10:34Nobody.
10:35And yet you lost by six.
10:36You lost by six.
10:38I want to make sure that you and I, and whatever, you're always positive anyway.
10:41But for me-
10:42I thought yesterday was great.
10:43Even you won't go there.
10:45But as I look at it, all the things that I'm thinking about, and I just watched it again
10:52today.
10:53I got here to work early, and I watched it during the morning.
10:56And the more I watched it, the more you realize they should have lost by 20.
11:00Probably.
11:01They probably should have lost by 20 points.
11:03But you lost only by six.
11:04So there was some positives.
11:05They fumbled at the one.
11:06You know, you didn't go in on fourth and two.
11:09Like, it comes down to a few plays.
11:11Yep.
11:12Could have made it a 20-point loss.
11:13Hell, they could have won.
11:14They could have won.
11:15Yep.
11:16They get off the field on that long third and eight.
11:17They could have won.
11:18Yep.
11:19Yep.
11:20Yep.
11:21Yep.
11:22Yep.
11:23Yep.
11:24Yep.
11:25Yep.
11:26Yep.
11:27Yep.
11:28Yep.
11:29Yep.
11:30Yep.
11:31Yep.
11:32Yep.
11:33Yep.
