00:00When it comes to superheroes, sizes don't matter.
00:03Here's a look at McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse DC Silver Age The Atom.
00:10Ray Palmer is a science liaison to S.H.A.D.E. and a hero in his own right as The Atom.
00:33He is also the creator of The Ant Farm, a pioneer in miniaturization technology, and
00:37a recent welcome addition to the Justice League of America.
00:40I think before anyone gets any ideas about shrinking in size, why don't we first grab
00:44the tape measure and see how the figure stands of this size.
00:47Grabbing first of course the tape measure, we're going to start in inches right to the
00:50very top of the head I go.
00:51You're looking at Ray Palmer standing six and a half of those inches, that is, or the
00:55figure is going to be 17 centimeters tall.
00:58Who do we have we can bring in for comparisons?
01:00Well, how about a Silver Age Superman?
01:02Figure wise, he's going to be a little bit shorter, of course, than Suits.
01:05I mean, The Atom's using a standard size body, but it's more closer in scale to someone
01:10like this.
01:11Here's what the figure looks like with Blue Beetle.
01:13Very similar style of torso, very similar arms, in fact, as well.
01:16Here's what the figure also looks like with Booster Gold.
01:18I'm going to bring in some of the classic looking characters, Firestorm also as well.
01:22Here's Plastic Man, and hopefully he's not going to knock anybody over.

01:32As for Ray's stuff, the figure comes included with a version of himself that's shrunk down
01:36in size.
01:37He's also laying down on the job right now.
01:39Figure also comes included with display stand, some swappable hands, but first things first,
01:44the figure also comes included with a trading card.
01:46Love the artwork, first of all, that they have on the front.
01:48Of course, it's matching somewhat the similar colors that we get for the actual figure.
01:51And then we flip around to the back.
01:52You get the real name, of course, of Ray Palmer and a very easy to digest read up, of course,
01:58you can read for yourself.
01:59So it happens to be the same thing I read at the beginning of this video.
02:02Let's put that off to the side.
02:04A figure also, like I said, comes included with display stand.
02:06It's not that type of display stand you're used to seeing, just happen to have an example
02:10of that right here.
02:11Normally, you get yourself a DC logo printed down below here.
02:15This time around, actually, because it's a digital release, it's McFarlane Toys digital
02:18stamping that you get instead.
02:20Does have still the peg up the top corner, still plugs into the feet the normal way they
02:24do.
02:26Rush right away to the idea of displaying this figure with this stand, because there's
02:30a reason why this figure is laying on the job right now.
02:33The problem with the figure, though, the smaller version that he comes included with, while
02:37it matches somewhat similar in colors, the blue and the red, he has, unfortunately, no
02:41posability at all, which is kind of really strange because they could have ventured into
02:46the idea of maybe giving this guy some posability.
02:48A page puncher's release of Ray Palmer, for example, would have had elbow or shoulder
02:54articulation.
02:55Certainly, at the very least, would have had head movement, but this guy, unfortunately,
02:58is just relegated to being a statue.
03:00Certainly, though, as a way to sell the page punchers, those smaller ones that come included
03:05with the comics, had they released a Ray Palmer or the Atom in a version like that, it would
03:10have pushed people in the direction of wanting to pick up a page punchers, because then they
03:14could have had various different sizes.
03:16In fact, I don't think it's that late at all, if they're still planning to do, oh,
03:19it almost looks like it's the same size.
03:20If they are planning still to carry on with the page punchers, release another version
03:24of Ray here that would be a little bit smaller in size and would have some additional posability.
03:28I think that would be a good way to cast a line and reel in some collectors that still
03:32don't really collect the page punchers all that much.
03:35The face sculpt for what it is, for how small it is, is decently done, although it's a
03:39bit of a disappointment that the figure doesn't have any posability at all.
03:43He also, because he's using a softer plastic, he has the hardest time to stand.
03:48A lot of times, if you're looking at him too, like the way his foot is bent out of
03:52the packaging, and I probably could heat this up just a little bit.
03:55He wants to lean forward for that, I would certainly say, because he does have pickles
03:59on the bottoms of his feet.
04:01Yes, make use of this display stand to attach onto this figure.
04:04At least then it will ensure that this version of Ray isn't going to fall forward.
04:08The figure also comes includes some swappable hands.
04:10Now the way he's configured right now, he has a closed fist on one side, and then on
04:14the adjacent side, he has what almost looks like a hand that's specifically there to hold
04:19something.
04:20Although unfortunately, the figure doesn't come in clue with any other accessories than
04:23the ones we've already talked about, and of course those hands.
04:26The figure's hands, he does come in clue with a gestured or dynamic hand, and he also comes
04:30in clue with a pointing hand.
04:33Now with these hands, if you're looking at them, I just put the figure down here for
04:36a second, following the rule of thumb, obviously the thumbs are always going to go inward,
04:41so he's going to have a hand to swap on this side, and then he's going to have, hey yeah,
04:44a hand to swap on this side here.
04:47To change those out, let's follow the plan, let's just go and remove the hand from one
04:50side.
04:51You just want to carefully remove it from the post.
04:54Now I did have a problem I noticed with trying to remove these hands.
04:57It's almost kind of like, if you're looking at this, they've given these guys now really
05:01narrow pegs.
05:03They still work, but I've noticed that first of all, like they're a little bit more sightly.
05:07I guess that what they wanted to try to do is keep kind of the same shape though as the
05:10sleeve, so it looked like one form, but it is as a result of it kind of make the form
05:14look a little longer.
05:15Hold on to this as you're twisting this.
05:19You might find it's a lot easier to remove it, and then we're just going to pop the new
05:21hand in place, do it on this side.
05:24So again, like you can, you can see like they tried to keep the peg about the same size
05:27as the forearm.
05:29The hand, unfortunately though, because they've also molded this in red plastic and they've
05:32painted this in red paint, the colors of the red don't quite match.
05:36That's going to happen again.
05:38You can also do this on this side too.
05:39So again, you're going to hold on to like the wrist peg right here, and that kind of
05:43just helps to hold things in place while you're doing your best to kind of twist the hand
05:46off the peg.
05:47And then we'll just put the gestured hand there or dynamic hand.
05:51Just pop that in place.
05:52There we go.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Again, like the only thing unfortunately about this is that it's very noticeable the fact
05:56that they're clearly using a red plastic and they're clearly have painted this in red paint.
06:01It doesn't quite match.
06:02That's one thing that's also going to be consistent when you're looking at the lower half of his
06:06body.
06:07Before doing that though, I did want to show you guys certainly what his head sculpt looks
06:09like.
06:10It's a, it's a nice looking Adam.
06:11It is a nice looking, the Adam.
06:13I want to make sure I put the in the front of it.
06:15Of course he does have the little symbol there printed very nicely on the front of his face.
06:18The eyes are painted well as well.
06:19I mean, he could really be a serviceable stand in for Captain America if they were doing
06:24Marvel.
06:25I guess they are doing the Marvel statues, but the head sculpt looks good.
06:28The blue paint for what they've done as well.
06:30There are elements that are molded in blue plastic and then there's areas as well that
06:34they've also painted.
06:36His belt, for example, clearly is painted in place, but like the top of his torso is
06:39molded in blue plastic as well for his arms.
06:43The problem that goes with that though, is that the lower end of his legs, all of this
06:46part is molded in red.
06:48So you can already kind of see what's happening here.
06:51When you get to the abdomen area, there's very much a divide where one top part is all
06:55done in red paint and then the lower half of his body is kind of more than in the, in
06:59the red plastic.
07:00I do wish that they could have matched the colors a little bit closer because it does
07:03look like they're from two separate different costumes.
07:07One other thing too I also noticed with my figure is that these socket joints, so essentially
07:10like the shoulder attaches into the torso, right?
07:13Yeah.
07:14Like you've got these cup, they're not even joints either, they're, they're points that
07:17kind of cover over the part that plugs into the torso.
07:21But I noticed like with mine especially, they're really loose.
07:23They sit, they sit far out and I wish that they were a little bit more sunken in.
07:27I've pushed these in a couple of times now, but every time I want to move then the arm
07:31out.
07:32These, these just seem to droop out, you can probably see for yourself.
07:35Other than that though, I like the look of that figure, uh, other than just again, like
07:38I wish the color of the red was matched a little bit better.
07:40And again, I wish that this was just a little bit tighter up top.
07:44Rest of the figure for the lower half of his body.
07:45Again, I like the use of the bright red, the belt obviously is painted as I already mentioned.
07:50I kind of wish that the belt was molded over top, but because they're wanting to of course
07:53use the most of their mold, this mold would have just been used from another figure and
07:57then they would just painted the belt over top of it.
07:59The lower boots look good.
08:00And again, like the choice for the blue and the choice of the red look really good for
08:03the figure from a paint standpoint, other than really just the red, there's nothing
08:07at all.
08:08I would have certainly changed to his face.
08:10It's certainly a good looking Adam figure.
08:12Now for his articulation, unlike this one that unfortunately has nothing working at
08:17all when it comes to movement, this figure, at least for the regular size version of Ray
08:22does actually have your standard articulation.
08:24So the head's going to rotate all the way around.
08:26It looks up, it looks down, and you can also move it back and forth as well.
08:29Shoulders do rotate all the way around, all the same stuff that you're used to seeing
08:32when it comes to the multiverse figures.
08:34The arms do come out beyond, I would say 90 degrees.
08:38There's a swivel there at the bicep, double hinge on the elbow and the hands rotate all
08:42the way around.
08:43Yes, unfortunately though, I wish that the pegs were, there's really no way around it
08:47because if they had gone back to using the more circular pegs, then it would have looks
08:50like he almost broke his wrist and there's some swelling there.
08:53This at least gives you a more kind of consistent shape to the forearm, but it does make his
08:59arm look a little bit longer because of that.
09:01Again, like when it comes to the upper torso, that's going to be on a bulge, right?
09:04The lower abdomen is also on a bulge, right?
09:08Legs split out.
09:09You can take the legs and move forward, move them back, you know, again, because they are
09:12using the softer plastic for the lower trunks that the figure diaper, and I always do that
09:16with these reviews, the figure diaper, you know, again, is going to make, I don't think
09:21it doesn't look as bad because you can see like if it follows the form to the top of
09:24his body, like the trunks fit pretty close to that.
09:27It doesn't look like they're sticking out.
09:28I think they are getting honestly better when it comes to these trunks, but again, like
09:32the legs go forward and back and out, there's a little bit of a squeak.
09:34You can twist the top of the legs, you can double hinge on the knees, no articulation
09:38here for the lower boots, but there at least is articulation in the ankles, both back and
09:42forth this way, an ankle rocker, and of course the ever crucial toe articulation as well.
09:48From the sculpting and the execution of the figure, I think it looks good.
09:51You know, the only thing about it though, is it always seems to be a problem when you
09:54take molding of plastic and then you paint plastic around it, especially when it has
09:59to be so close in quarters like this.
10:01If it wasn't for the fact that that red had to be a continued triangle from the lower
10:04half of his abdomen, if it wasn't for that, you probably wouldn't notice it as much.
10:08But when you get to things like the lower ends of his sleeves, those are a much darker
10:12red and the top of the point here for the triangle is also darker than the red plastic
10:17around it.
10:18So it definitely does stand a little bit more.
10:19I'm also a little bit disappointed though, that the smaller version of the Atom doesn't
10:23have any poseability.
10:25Because this is technically, I suppose, considered an accessory to the figure, probably was one
10:30of the reasons why they didn't incorporate articulation.
10:32But you know, with them already doing the Page Punchers figures, whether that is a line
10:36that anybody's collecting or not, Page Punchers did prove for their size, you could still
10:40pack in some poseability.
10:42If any, at the very least, they could have released an Atom with that poseability when
10:46it comes to this figure release, or again, like dot, dot, dot, as an idea thrown certainly
10:50out there, if they did want to do any more Page Punchers, and I don't know if, honestly,
10:54if the company's pursuing the Page Punchers anymore, had they released an Atom of this
10:59same color scheme, it would be certainly a nudge in the right direction for collectors
11:04to go out and pick up that figure so that they could have various different size classes
11:07with this release.
11:08Listen, I think to have the Atom not packed with a smaller version of himself would seem
11:12a little out of place.
11:14The character, the hero, after all, is known for increasing and decreasing his size, so
11:17not to include an accessory like that would have been a big letdown.
11:21Unfortunately, though, with the accessory only being an accessory and having no poseability
11:25at all, unless you're going to recreate the pose of the Atom standing straight like a
11:29statue, if you're posing him like I got him right now, it's going to lose any bit of the
11:33illusion you're trying to pull off.
11:35It looks less like he's increased in size, and it looks more like the Atom's just carrying
11:39around an action figure version of himself.
11:41Now, I did say earlier in this review that I wish that the Atom was released as a page
11:45punchers because then at least it could be justified.
11:47If you wanted to pick up that figure standalone, it could then be perfectly displayed with
11:51this guy here.
11:52The Atom technically was released as a page punchers, but it's not the type that you were
11:56thinking of.
11:57Instead of being the smaller scale figures that came included with the comics, he was
12:00released with a comic, but it's of the size that we're looking at right now.
12:03He was part of the Flash Wave, a figure... actually, I never ended up picking up that
12:07Atom.
12:08I really should get around to doing it.
12:09At the end of it, though, I really did want more of a classic look to Ray Palmer, and
12:13this one doesn't let me down, although the colors, unfortunately, of the red don't quite
12:16100% match, but that isn't just the fault of McFarlane Toys.
12:20That's any company that tries to match paint to plastic, and never is a case you usually
12:24get the colors matched perfectly.
12:26The colors are pretty close.
12:27Things like his hands and things obviously like his lower and abdomen torso don't quite
12:31match the painted red that they have above it, but I can live with that at least.
12:35I just wish, though, that the smaller version of Atom could have at least had a little bit
12:39of poseability.
12:40I don't expect a whole lot, but at the very least, maybe shoulders, legs, and head, maybe
12:44at least you could do something with it, and obviously, you're going to have to use the
12:47display stand because the smaller Atom can't stand on his own.

12:59Luckily, though, for the price that I found this guy, I think it was under $30 where I
13:03found him, that's a price that I can easily live with because Atom was definitely one
13:07I wanted to have displayed with the rest of my Justice League.
