Brussels rolls out massive flower carpet in middle of historic square
Brussels' historic square is covered with a colorful carpet of almost a million flowers on Aug. 15 2024, as part of the 'Flower carpet' event 23rd edition. This 70-meter long and 24-meter wide flower carpet, designed by street artist Oceane Cornille, is called 'Rhizome'. More than 100 volunteers spent around six hours creating this piece. The carpet will be on display until August 18. The first flower carpet in Brussels was created by landscape architect Etienne Stautemas in 1971.

00:41So it's more than 50 years now that it exists.
00:44And what we wanted to do this year is something very special.
00:46We thought, oh, it's an ephemeral art.
00:49So indeed, it's street art.
00:51So this year to modernize the flower carpet, we asked to Océane Cornille, a street artist,
00:56to make the design of the carpet.
00:58So you have lots of references to the history of Brussels, to the iris, so the flower, which
01:04is the symbol of Brussels.
01:06And so you have something very modern with something very traditional.
01:35I just wanted to illustrate the diversity of Brussels, the way of all the who are communicating
01:43together with their own identity, historical language, and the difference, and make Brussels
01:53a world, big, unique city, super dynamic.
