Mpox vaccines to arrive in DR Congo in next few days — WHO

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tells reporters on Aug. 30, 2024 that mpox vaccines are set to arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the next few days to fight a new strain of the virus. Some 230,000 mpox doses are immediately available to be dispatched, added WHO official Tim Nguyen. These doses were donated by the European Commission and Danish mpox vaccine manufacturer Bavarian Nordic, Nguyen said. The WHO has said that its partners could start buying mpox vaccines before they are approved by the UN health agency, lifting its usual rules in a bid to get inoculations to Africa faster. It is currently reviewing applications for emergency licenses for two vaccines made by Bavarian Nordic and Japan's KM Biologics. Tedros said these were expected to be granted in the next two weeks.

00:00Since we have now the complete information, the EUL can be ready in the next two weeks because it's already a week now since we have received the complete information.
00:11So, but still.
00:14Um, we don't need to wait, you know, until two weeks before we proceed with procurements and that's why Gabby and UNICEF are proceeding with.
00:26Procurements side by side with the process of the EUL. So I think that has to be clear. And then on the vaccines, some of the vaccines, as Tim said, will arrive in the next few days in DRC.
00:45So what we understand right now is from HERA that they have procured 175,000 doses of MVABN vaccine.
00:55In addition, the manufacturer Bavaria Nordic is donating another 40,000 doses to these quantities.
01:03That makes up about 230,000 doses that we understand are immediately available to be dispatched to affected regions.
01:14As the DG mentioned, two companies submitted, completed their submission of applications to WHO for emergency use listing review on the 23rd.
01:26And these are Bavaria Nordic from Denmark and KM Biologics from Japan.
