The WHO says it is "not surprising" that athletes have been infected during the Paris Olympic Games amid a new global rise in cases. "Governments need to be strengthening their approach to using Covid vaccines, especially ahead of the winter months in the northern hemisphere," adds Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention director, in Geneva.

00:00It's not surprising to see athletes being infected because, as I said before, the virus
00:04is circulating quite rampantly in other countries.
00:07What's very different now is the impact.
00:09We aren't seeing the levels of impact like we saw in 2020, 2021, 2022, and that's because
00:16we have therapeutics, we have better testing, and we have protection because of past infection
00:20as well as vaccination.
00:23Governments need to be strengthening their approach to using COVID vaccines, especially
00:29ahead of the winter months in the Northern Hemisphere.
