00:00some NFL news and notes over the weekend as we enter a week of preseason action
00:10in full for all 32 NFL clubs around the league the Hall of Fame game is great
00:16but it's really an exhibition match now we dive into the preseason even more so
00:21we're all 32 teams will begin their first of three preseason games as
00:26training camp continues on and over the weekend Donny some contract news for one
00:32of the NFL's very best ranked atop the top 100 in the National Football League
00:38by his peers as the best player in the NFL Tyreek Hill gets a restructured deal
00:44with Miami still a three-year deal worth 90 million dollars but just adds in more
00:50guaranteed money over the lifetime of his contract extension that is now this
00:55four-year deal one hundred six and a half million dollars Tyreek Hill is one
01:01of four wide receivers currently in the National Football League that makes more
01:05than thirty million dollars per year that stays the way in the annual average
01:10salary but of course the up in terms of his guaranteed money in that contract
01:16with the Finns I mean you want to talk about a guy that deserves it it's Tyreek
01:20Hill the most electric wide receiver today in football in a guy that wasn't
01:25even up for a contract gets an extension and a reworked number and a lot more
01:29money in his pocket see sometimes owners are smart before the season reward your
01:34best football players because you will get maximum effort which then throws
01:37that little bit of a wrinkle into what's going on with Brandon Ayuk out in San
01:41Francisco what's happening with CD Lamb down in Dallas and of course the
01:44travesty that's taking place in front of our eyes for the Cincinnati Bengals
01:48every second you wait other guys are going to reset that market therefore
01:52driving that price higher does anybody look at this Tyreek Hill deal and say
01:56that's ridiculous the Miami Dolphins gave him that deal like no he's the best
01:59at his position pay him accordingly to keep him happy it's what good ownership
02:04groups doing good front offices do you don't haggle with your best players you
02:08know you haggle with Ben the 55th guy on the roster it's gonna make 1.1 million
02:11you bring him in and say I'm gonna cut you unless you take a $200,000 pay cut
02:15and if he says no you cut him and nobody cares you don't want to mess with your
02:19top talent here I love when teams take care of him Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins
02:23came to an agreement fantastic we're not worried about anything this season you
02:27got your wide receivers paid your quarterback paid they're looking to have
02:30a good season now yeah absolutely so Donnie I think it's a great point that
02:34you bring up because when you look at Tyreek Hill he is maybe the best in the
02:40game alongside Justin Jefferson and CD Lamb and Jamar Chase and there should be
02:45that reward for performance but also the projection of continuing to be one of
02:50the best players in the National Football League and one of the integral
02:53pieces of your franchise in terms of success and Tyreek Hill is certainly
02:59that he is the favorite right now to lead the NFL in receiving yards this
03:03year at six to one he's a dollar and a half in front of Justin Jefferson that
03:09plus 650 number has now become six to one he's also the favorite to have the
03:13most receiving touchdowns in the NFL at a ten to one number so you might be
03:18saying lead in both two of the three legs of the Triple Crown if you will
03:23most receptions receiving yards and receiving scores it's what he did last
03:27year 1799 yards to lead all the National Football League 13 receiving scores and
03:34to a tongue-of-my-loa was fully healthy why do I bring that up because 1375 in a
03:40hook might seem steep but is it enough for the season-long receiving yards
03:45number on Tyreek Hill DRS more than 1,700 receiving yards in each of his
03:51first two years with the Dolphins and in 2022 to his health was a key
03:57consideration and Tyreek Hill still broke through that number in a large way
04:03I would bet the over on 1375 and a hook why wouldn't you at this point here what
04:08what gives you the reason they're not going to go over that and also you got
04:11to a tiger below who's healthy now also when you take leave the quarterback
04:15position to it doesn't have to go into this season with the worries of oh let
04:18me just make sure I can stay healthy he can play with his you know as talented
04:22as he wants to be as aggressive he wants to be no great he's not playing to get
04:26hurt not what I'm saying here but you sort of take away that I have my
04:29financial security for my family now let's go out and win and not worry about
04:33anything else you know waddle saying the same exact thing because he got paid you
04:37know what Tyreek Hill saying the same exact thing because he got paid I just
04:40love the when you have the vibes that start out this good where everybody is
04:44happy and the only focus you have now is on football it usually works out in your
04:48favor by the end of the season like what happens if you went into the season hey
04:51you know what I don't think we can come to an agreement to it uh you make a lot
04:55of money at the wide receiver position right now Tyreek we're gonna worry about
04:57you next year and waddle you're up for an extension but we don't have to give
05:00that to you now how we look for the Miami Dolphins instead they took care of
05:03all of their top talent and said let's go out and win a Super Bowl this year
05:07that's how you handle your business and again they extend to a tongue-of-i-law
05:11they at least restructure the deal it was not an extension for Tyreek Hill to
05:16pay him more money and more guaranteed money as well the Dolphins win total is
05:22nine and a half the over has the slight bit of juice Miami is a favorite right
05:26now to see the AFC postseason for a second consecutive year the Dolphins
05:32have not won a playoff game since the year 2000 nearly two and a half decades
05:37that is the task that Mike McDaniel the head coach of course of this Dolphins
05:42franchise has embraced maybe that changes this year in 2024 we got word
05:48from Dan Quinn over the weekend in his first year as Washington's head coach
05:53that number two overall pick in the rookie quarterback Jaden Daniels will
05:58play in the team's first preseason game on Saturday in MetLife against the New
06:04York Jets of course that was expected but some of that is now more excitement
06:09for Washington that we are going to see Jaden Daniels out there on the field we
06:14also anticipate seeing Caleb Williams in the Bears first true preseason game this
06:19weekend as well yeah these works are all good on the field that is more exciting
06:23to get in that first game now also keep in mind the Chicago Bears technically
06:27have are going to play more preseason games so waiting Caleb Williams one more
06:31week to get him out there he's going to be just fine as well but the excitement
06:34does build when you see these talented rookies get off the field even if it is
06:38just a snapshot then one or two series you get to see the arm strength out here
06:41they're not game planning they certainly don't want to get him hurt and say hey
06:44Jaden drop back 13 times in the first quarter run six times let's see how
06:48explosive you are you're just looking to get that first audition out of the way
06:52get all the butterflies done you're officially a professional football
06:55player the minute you take that snap and away you go the commander is a
06:59three-point favorite on the road in East Rutherford against the Jets on Saturday
07:04Caleb Williams is the favorites when the offensive rookie of the year hardware
07:08plus 135 Daniels tied for the second best price alongside Marvin Harrison
07:13jr. both at plus 650 will have more of a rookie quarterback conversation to start
07:19off our number three preseason breakdown kind of it is time for
07:25preseason football this week in the National Football League a double header
07:30of action on Thursday a triple header of games on Friday now we say this with the
07:37caveat is it hard to handicap the preseason yes of course are there
07:44advantages and edges out there according to the odds makers I think so
07:49DRS I've had a pretty good run the last few preseasons in terms of looking at a
07:54team's roster looking at a mentality for a young up-and-coming team and trying to
07:59find those edges in the numbers in terms of NFL preseason betting at least week
08:05number one so here is the double header on Thursday night in New England the
08:09Patriots as a three and a half point favorite play host to the Carolina
08:13Panthers in New York at MetLife the Giants will host the Detroit Lions as
08:19you can see both of the home teams are booked as more than a field goal
08:24favorite if these games were to take place during the regular season it would
08:29be the complete opposite even Carolina who of course was atrocious and a
08:33two-win football team a year ago but even if Carolina were to face off
08:38against the Patriots this year the Panthers might even be a slight road
08:43money line favorite different though in preseason action yeah I am looking
08:48forward to that Panthers game because any time you have a new regime like
08:50obviously the Panthers have and certainly in like a tough total swallow
08:54last year we draft number one overall the number two quarterback plays so much
08:57better than your number one there's a lot to gain here in the preseason just
09:00for expectations from a general manager's position and also from a fan
09:04position but also that New England Patriots game where they're at home like
09:07the early returns on Drake May from what I'm reading here again I haven't watched
09:11any practice paper even delve into it like their tech like the returns are
09:14awful right now like do Kobe Brissett might as well just be the franchise guy
09:18from what we're seeing in practice out of Drake May so you do want to see him
09:21get out there and maybe have a little bit of success to sort of build off what
09:25you've seen because so many times NFL franchises they'll try to lie to you
09:28like a he's coming along perfectly we like exactly where he's at but now with
09:32the advent of social media where beat writers are in there tweeting every
09:34single thing that's happening at practice it looks like Drake May can't
09:37even complete a pass and when he does it's to the opposite team you're
09:40meeting a pick six going the opposite direction Lions and Giants who knows
09:44what we're gonna see there by the way are we gonna see Daniel Jones game
09:47number one has that been determined yet at this point because typically when
09:50you're working your way back from injury you want to get the guy out there sooner
09:53than possible but then again does it actually make sense to run Daniel Jones
09:56out even if he has been cleared for contact that's gonna be interesting one
10:00to play up but I'm with you on that you just see the favorites because they're
10:02at home you'll see how it plays out yes the Lions and the Giants regular season
10:06game completely foot maybe maybe in lines like minus five and a half or six
10:10on the road against the Giants you know Donnie I think it's interesting about
10:13Daniel Jones there is coaching mentality to the new preseason there's also the
10:18new structure of preseason football only three games there was at least a
10:22standard operating procedure perhaps that for a long time in the four game
10:27slate you wouldn't see your starters game one they might play a couple of
10:31series in game two maybe most of the opening quarter heck maybe even most of
10:35the first half in game three and then wouldn't play in game four not sure if
10:40there's been any confirmation on Daniel Jones as of this moment but of course
10:44has been there for all of training camp cleared for contact coming back from the
10:48torn ACL a year ago I'm already going to bet Carolina plus three and a half to
10:53the opposite end of the coin for Drake May the reports at a training camp for
10:58the Panthers is that Bryce Young is looking ready to go under Dave Canales I
11:02expect to see Bryce Young looking for a bounce back season after a bad rookie
11:08campaign but in a tumultuous situation in Charlotte I'll take the three and a
11:13half with Carolina right here from the jump let's get to the three games on
11:18Friday and Donnie when you talk preseason football there is no more
11:22dominant side than that of the Baltimore Ravens under John Harbaugh a 24 game
11:29preseason win streak that dates back to the 2016 season a field goal favorite
11:35against Philadelphia yeah that's it's almost you look at that and you say to
11:39yourself like the Ravens always win why is that only a three-point line and also
11:44if you are a team like the Ravens that really says we want to win games in the
11:48preseason which ones they usually probably feel the most competent is game
11:51number one because most NFL teams could care less about that one the more
11:54interesting one now with only three games is game number two and then you
11:57would figure the Ravens would win a game in game number three but if we are
12:00looking Lamar Jackson's not going to play in this game now here's the
12:04difference in the past like the Ravens have like the perfect you know three to
12:08four quarterbacks on the bench for preseason guys that have some NFL
12:11experience that are ultimately talented outside of the pocket we're gonna get
12:15that same thing this year Josh Johnson a little bit older quarterback as we know
12:18Devin Leary who obviously isn't that same cut from the mold Lamar Jackson
12:22Emory Jones so this is one to watch where maybe they're not as astute at the
12:27quarterback position backup wise as they used to be in the previous years
12:30something to watch in this preseason that 24 game win streak snapped last
12:35year for the flock but still it is the mentality under Harbaugh the Steelers
12:40also a perfect 3-0 last preseason I'm gonna pay attention to or on the early
12:44line next final question before we talk rookie quarterbacks where does Jason
12:49Kelsey rank in your all-time favorite birds he's pretty far up there he is if
12:54I was just going on the field right because sometimes off the field changes
12:59the opinions if I just said my favorite player of all time in an Eagles uniform
13:02it's Brian Westbrook now he's a great individual a nice man but he just
13:06doesn't translate that well to the airwaves like when he asked him for like
13:10analysis here but I don't hold that against I'm just talking on the field
13:13stuff defenders if you say Donnie who's your favorite defender of all time most
13:16people go right to you know Brian Dawkins that's what which I love Brian
13:19Dawkins my favorite defender here and again going back ways like loved
13:23obviously Reggie wait but it was actually Trent Cole was my favorite
13:26Eagles defensive player but yes if we're talking quarterbacks you know we like
13:30this equals the Olympics as well Randall Cunningham his daughter is in the
13:34Olympics as a high jumper fantastic stuff every time he comes back like
13:39breakfast season ticket order hey Randall Cunningham is gonna be at the
13:42half or you know put them into the Hall of Fame or doing whatever they do always
13:45a standing ovation I gotta tell you walk into that stadium look up in the
13:49rafters like this and I don't know why fives up there I don't know why number
13:52fives up there I love Cunningham I love Cunningham just McNabb's five up there
14:06in the red by the way 12 is one of those numbers that are not tired but
14:10unofficially also we got some word the other day where Josh sweat in
14:15Philadelphia was trying to wear the number 9 jersey and was told that's not
14:20really available at this time how about that like I like the way sometimes you
14:23don't wear you don't officially retire the jersey but you just take it out of
14:27circulation here I like that so you're you're throwing shots then at my guy
14:32DeNovan Donovan McNabb from yeah the Syracuse orange holes is better Jalen
14:37hurts is better Mike Vick's better all-time Ron Jaworski's better all-time
14:41like McNabb's way way down that list here all right why is five in here I
14:46like that look all right let's talk quarterbacks that might at a certain
14:49point have their jerseys retired by the NFL franchises about to enter their
14:54first year in the National Football League we talk rookies by asking you and
14:59fade the public
15:03Donnie big week in the National Football League it's the opening week of
15:11preseason games for all 32 NFL teams of course it was the Bears and the Texans
15:16on this past Thursday in Canton in the Hall of Fame game we didn't see Caleb
15:22Williams we should see him for Chicago this week in their first official of
15:26three preseason games but we remove him from the conversation outside of Caleb
15:32Williams which QB will have the best rookie season that was the question at
15:36sports grid on Twitter to see what you all believe of these rookies in their
15:44first years in the NFL we listed Bo Nix Drake May
15:49Jaden Daniels in JJ McCarthy in most of the public thinking Jaden Daniels the
15:56number two overall selection for Washington will have the best year
15:59outside of Caleb Williams perhaps but some that replied to the poll Donnie
16:04thinking Jaden Williams will even surpass Caleb or Jaden Daniels excuse me
16:08will surpass Caleb Williams in this year in the National Football League look
16:12he's got a lot of talent and I was not fading the public in this one I'm with
16:16the public in Jaden Daniels I'm excited to see what we have and let's granted if
16:19he does play the full 17 game slate he's not gonna get benched here because he's
16:23the rookie quarterback he's the franchise guy there's way too much talent
16:27but when you take a look at who's gonna have the best rookie campaign only one
16:30guy on that list like you might say okay JJ McCarthy grows into that spot where
16:33he might start the season as a backup Drake May the same exact thing even
16:37maybe Bo Nix we're not talking about that with Jaden Nick did you see me
16:40Jaden Daniels but at the same time you add that athletic ability with the legs
16:45where I'm looking at 500 plus yards easily on the ground from this kid why
16:50not his numbers if you look at that dual threat ability that he has dynamic with
16:54the arm he's got quality wide receivers to throw it after new offensive
16:58quarter coordinator in town in Washington and just what he can do with
17:01his legs that flat-out speed that he has why not so I agree with it I think
17:06Caleb Williams is the best overall because I think he's going to be put in
17:08the best spot here to succeed from but throwing perspective and possibly from
17:12a winning perspective but I'm not put the past Jaden Daniels you tell me you
17:15like Jaden Daniels better than Caleb this year is a rookie to put up more
17:18statistics I'm having a hard time overturning that argument so we have
17:23those numbers out and there are three quarterbacks that will enter their
17:27rookie year with a season-long passing yards prop the guys that seem
17:31solidified as the number one QB for their teams Caleb Williams number 3,500
17:37and a hook Jaden Daniels 3,025 and a half and Bo Nix at 2850 and a hook for
17:45Denver Dan Quinn confirming that Jaden Daniels will play for Washington in
17:50their preseason opener against the Jets on Saturday the commander is a three
17:54point road favorite in MetLife but Caleb Williams is still the favorite to win
18:00offensive rookie of the year at plus 135 some of that for Caleb will be tied to
18:06the expectations for a Bears team that is expected to contend for a playoff
18:11spot in the NFC it will be a fascinating race to follow all year long
