00:00At the beginning of the film, a group of men is taken to prison. After they are blindfolded and handcuffed, the military police mercilessly beat them.
00:07They are arrested without trial, and I have no idea if they want to be imprisoned for several days, months or years.
00:13A few days later, the police decide to separate them into different cells and torture them in solidarity.
00:18The three prisoners, Pepe, Mauricio and Fernandez, are transferred to the institution a few miles away.
00:24The police see them as toys, and that's how they torture them.
00:27The orphaned men are filled with gasoline and before that with burning.
00:31With fear in their hearts, they accept their fate, but fortunately it turns out that the police were only joking with them.
00:38The film was set in Uruguay in 1973, when the civil war regime ruled the country.
00:44The times were hard for the Uruguayan population, especially for those who did not support the dictator.
00:50Among all the parties that rebelled against the dictatorship was the leftist group Tupamaros, which was involved in a guerrilla war with the national police.
00:58The three imprisoned men are Pepe, Mauricio and Fernandez, members of the Tupamaros group, who were arrested by the national police and held illegally as hostages in a state prison.
01:08This is the second prison they are transferred to, but it won't be there for long, because the department decided to rotate them through the prisons in the country so they couldn't escape.
01:15The men know that the exit from the prison will be difficult, but they are not aware that they have fallen into a pit of abyss.
01:21In the morning, they try to look through the window of their cellars.
01:24The guards realize that the men do not deserve the right to look at the sunlight because they opposed their government.
01:30The next hour, the windows are covered.
01:32The scene changes to 12 months later.
01:34As the guards wanted, Pepe, Mauricio and Fernandez did not see the sunlight for a year.
01:40They only got enough food to survive and did not have additional amenities.
01:44They also did not talk to anyone during that time, because they would be brutally beaten if they did.
01:50It's finally time to be transferred again, and the three are hoping for a little better life.
01:54As they hoped, they are placed in a prison with a bed.
01:57This is the biggest luxury for the boys, because they are used to the comfort of a concrete floor.
02:02One day, the commissioner comes to Mauricio and tells him that he has a chance to meet with his family, who threatened to sue him if they didn't see him.
02:09However, he must keep quiet about how to deal with him in prison.
02:13After a month, he gets a cup of fresh hair and new clothes for that occasion.
02:17Finally, the day comes when Mauricio meets his parents and his daughter.
02:22Overwhelmed by the reunion, their eyes are full of tears.
02:25However, the next thing they know, Mauricio is determined because the reunion time is over.
02:29He tries to calm down and fights in front of his family.
02:33They cry seeing how their son is treated, but nothing can be done about it.
02:38Less than a year later, they are transferred to their fourth prison.
02:41Mauricio and Fernandez are kept in underground cells with a window on the ceiling.
02:45Sometimes the soldiers give them food and water, but most of the days they are hungry.
02:49After months of hunger, the prisoners see a stream of water falling through the window, but it turns out that the guard was urinating.
02:56As time goes by, the boys begin to communicate with each other through the noise.
03:00A number of times someone knocks on the wall and connects it to the toilet.
03:04This gives them the activity to work alone and helps them in loneliness.
03:08However, it is different for Pepe, who is holding a knife on his bottom.
03:12His only friends are ants and insects.
03:15After several years of communication, Mauricio and Fernandez manage to play chess in the same way.
03:21A close-up of their fingers shows that they are scratched and injured due to continuous biting.
03:26On the other hand, Pepe's mental state worsens as he begins to hallucinate about the suffering he has experienced.
03:32He often sees his mother through the window and thinks that the hallucinations are real.
03:36At the same time, his mother is outside trying to get permission to meet her son.
03:41She stands on the rain for hours before she is told that he is not available for a family meeting because he is a national terrorist.
03:48Pepe often hears the two soldiers talking about a girl who is interested in one of them.
03:52He knows the whole story and knows what the soldier should do to impress the girl.
03:57One day, after months of silence, Pepe speaks and tells the soldier to write the girl a love letter.
04:03He even offers to write a letter for him if he gets a pencil and paper.
04:06The soldier insults him and calls him an imbecile, but a few days later he lets him go and asks for Pepe's advice.
04:12With his help, the man writes the girl who likes the beautiful letter and manages to impress her.
04:17The news spreads quickly and reaches Alzamora.
04:21He also has a girl he wants to talk to and needs Pepe's help to impress her.
04:26He listens to some details about the mentioned girl and finishes by writing another beautiful letter.
04:31Impressed, Alzamora gives him a pencil and a note as a reward.
04:35From that day on, his life became a little better with the help of his superiors.
04:39He gets decent food and is allowed to listen to the news on the radio.
04:43However, this quickly ends when the guards are ordered to move him to another prison.
04:47On the way to the move, Pepe gets a chance to look at the sky and the field for the first time in many years.
04:53Just when he thought he could live longer, he is thrown into a cell again.
04:57This time his hallucinations become worse and he imagines how he is being killed by electricity.
05:01This happens several times a day and weakens his will to live.
05:05At that moment, Pepe wants death more than freedom.
05:08Somewhere else, Mauricio and Fernandez continue to live as they lived.
05:12Since they can talk to each other, they do not feel lonely like Pepe.
05:16The surprise of one day brings the guards tables, books, a typewriter and various other things for them.
05:22The prisoners are worried instead of being excited, because they would never be given such a privilege in normal conditions.
05:29Their suspicion turns out to be true when they find out that Tim from the Red Cross has come to prison to check how they treat their prisoners.
05:36The tables and books are just a representation for the officer that the prison was not in disrepair due to poor management.
05:42Mauricio brings the officers to the examination.
05:44He imagines how he tells them that there is not even a real toilet, but in reality they only ask him for his name.
05:50The guards take him back and the tables and books are taken away as soon as possible, while in the clean room of the guards there is soap that was not there before.
05:57It turns out that Mauricio used him to communicate with someone.
06:00The leader of the army is called to deal with the situation.
06:03He interrogates Mauricio and asks him what he means in the cut and finds out that he drew chess moves.
06:08Although angry, the leader praises Mauricio's sharp mind and throws the thing away.
06:12But before leaving, Mauricio remembers the day he was arrested.
06:15He remembers how his wife was killed and how his house had several bullet holes.
06:20The leader laughs because he was the leader of the gang that happened then, and Mauricio's wife was killed at his behest.
06:27In the meantime, Pepe's mother has not given up her desire to meet her son one day, even though several years have passed.
06:33She visits every prison she goes to, hoping that the rules will change one day.
06:38This time Pepe brings a rosary pot to fulfill his need and water.
06:42He wants to deliver these items to him, even though he cannot meet him himself.
06:47To his delight, this time he is allowed to talk to his son for 5 minutes.
06:52The meeting is overwhelming, but they remain calm.
06:54Pepe talks to her about his mental health, as he thinks that something is stuck in his brain that he talks to him every day.
07:00He talks about giving up, which he explains to his wife.
07:03She shouts at him to be strong and defeat his enemies.
07:06The meeting ends, but her words encourage Pepe for the next few days.
07:10Every day, he asks the guards if he can get a gift from his mother, but they refuse to give him anything.
07:16One day, he hears that something is happening outside, and he uses it as an opportunity to get to his things.
07:21He goes through the window, lying to the guard that he is cheating on his wife and that he has syphilis.
07:26The guard stops him, surprised that the man knew so much about his private life.
07:30When Pepe threatens to shout even louder, he gets a rosary pot and a glass of water with him.
07:35When the guard gets the impression of Pepe's deteriorating mental health, he shows him a little mercy and orders him to visit a psychiatrist.
07:42The doctor is a kind woman who explains to Pepe what is going on.
07:46She asks him to write because it is the only way he can control his thoughts.
07:51When he finds out that the guards do not allow him a pencil and paper, he sends a special request to the commissioner to allow him everything he needs for medical use.
07:58The year 1980 finally comes.
08:02Mauricio and Fernandez listen to the news on the radio that plays somewhere outside.
08:05They hear that the nation is voting for or against democracy, and the results have arrived.
08:1039% say no, and 61% say yes.
08:14Mauricio and Fernandez ask each other where they are from because they have not heard half of the news.
08:19Surprised, the guards fall into their jaws and beat them because of the battle against the revolutionaries.
08:24It is clear that the winner is 61% for democracy.
08:27This is the first rejuvenation in their lives that Mauricio and Fernandez happily accept.
08:32Soon the nation will celebrate democracy and the top of their prison will be filled.
08:37Two years later, in 1982, the prisoners are relocated again.
08:42Mauricio and Fernandez do not know, but Pepe is also relocated to the same prison.
08:46In the new prison, things are different and they are finally treated as people.
08:50First they get the proper medical care.
08:52Pepe is then visited by the lieutenant Alzamora, who is now the chief guard.
08:56He shows his wedding ring, discovering that he married the girl who Pepe helped impress.
09:02Both laugh at each other, admitting the absurdity of the situation.
09:05The lieutenant asks Pepe if they have something that can make him repay his debt.
09:09In the next scene, Mauricio, Fernandez and Pepe are again united outside.
09:13They were close to each other in the last decade, but they never saw each other's faces.
09:19Enjoying the sun and fresh air, they sit outside for an hour.
09:23It's almost as if they were cured for a short time from everything they've been through since they were imprisoned.
09:27We continue to see how the prisoners look around.
09:30The last time they saw each other, they were young and happy.
09:34They are sad to see that they have been treated inappropriately.
09:37However, they take the liberty to go to the toilet, eat food every day and live as people, as a gift.
09:42When they get the chance, the three of them talk to each other through their cell phones and ask about other revolutionary friends.
09:49Some of their friends have died, and some are said to live like them, moving from prison to prison.
09:55Pepe now sows seeds in a pot that his mother gave him.
09:58Days pass and the seeds grow in the plant.
10:00The three of them now wear clean clothes, communicate with other prisoners, cook and live a decent life.
10:06Then, in 1985, Pepe is called to the commissioner's office and asked to sign some papers.
10:12The commissioner threatens to kill him outside and discovers that these are actually liberation papers.
10:17With the emergence of democracy, the revolutionaries who fought for it give up their freedom.
10:22Fernandez and Mauricio are also released along with all other prisoners.
10:26But while others leave, Mauricio remains in the kitchen, cleaning dishes for a long time.
10:31After 12 years in prison, he is almost afraid of what awaits him in life outside.
10:35In the next scene, the prisoners get on the bus and drive to the city.
10:39A crowd of people awaits them outside, encouraging heroes who fought for democracy.
10:43The men look at the sky, water and greenery, having missed small things in life for so long.
10:48Finally arriving in their hometown, they are reunited with their families again.
10:53Pepe shows his mother a beautiful flower that grew out of the seeds he planted in her pot.
10:58The film ends while the prisoners hug and cry with their families, recognizing that hard times have passed.
11:04In the epilogue, we find out that Pepe later became the president of Uruguay, and his friends also had a good life.
