00:04Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we are looking at the best teams of two in video games.
00:10Oh shit. This is gonna be awesome.
00:13Before we begin, we publish new content all week long.

00:22Banjo and Kazooie. Banjo-Kazooie series.
00:31It says a lot about the popularity of Banjo and Kazooie that fans have kept their passion for them alive
00:36despite not getting a new game since 2008.
00:39But their partnership is such an important element to the series.
00:43Banjo's dim-witted demeanor and Kazooie's sharp tongue play incredibly well off of each other,
00:48particularly in a world as wacky and cartoony as this one.
00:52Additionally, Rare made their 3D platformers stand out from a sea of others
00:56with ridiculously fun mechanics that utilized the features of both characters equally.
01:01We joyously bounced between each level, just waiting to see what the bear and bird could do next.
01:11Sonic and Tails. Sonic the Hedgehog series.
01:21Sonic may have been cool enough to debut on his own,
01:24but it wasn't long before his roster of characters began to expand.
01:27Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced Miles, Tails, Crower, and the two have been linked ever since.
01:33They're another team whose personalities play off of each other well.
01:36While Sonic is self-confident and cool, Tails is softer and a certifiable genius.
01:42Where Sonic places himself in danger, fighting head-on, Tails is eager to play support,
01:48using his expertise in all things mechanical to help those in need.
01:51It's quite a sweet friendship as well,
01:53with Sonic caring deeply for the young fox and Tails looking up to the speedster.
01:58Sonic has a lot of friends, but no one like Tails.
02:05Master Chief and Cortana. Halo series.
02:14This partnership may have had a rocky end,
02:17but Chief and Cortana are still one of the greatest duos in gaming.
02:21The draw of Halo is the excellent, futuristic gunplay
02:24and the interesting lore and politics that build up its world.
02:27But the heart, at least in the earlier games, comes from Master Chief's relationship with Cortana.
02:33While he blasts his way through insurmountable odds,
02:36she aids him as his woman in the chair, so to speak.
02:39More than that, she advises him during tense moments.
02:42And the two grow to care immensely for each other,
02:45despite only one of them being flesh and blood.
02:54Donkey and Diddy Kong. Donkey Kong series.
03:03Another wonderful partnership given to us by Rare,
03:05the developer reinvented the Donkey Kong series with 1994's Country.
03:10Along with a redesigned Donkey, we got to play as his smaller, quicker sidekick, Diddy,
03:15playing off of DK's oafish personality by being a bit hipper.
03:19I mean, he's a chimp with a Nintendo hat that pulls out a boombox upon every victory,
03:24so how much more hip can you get?
03:26Ever since, whenever Donkey Kong has appeared in a game,
03:29players have grown to expect Diddy to be there with him,
03:31no matter what other Kongs are hanging around.
03:34Their gameplay has also grown stronger together,
03:36with Diddy able to carry the hard-hitting Donkey with his jetpack.
03:53To say Kratos wasn't in the proper headspace for a sidekick during the Greek era of God of War
03:58would be quite the understatement.
04:00However, in 2018, Sony Santa Monica expanded on his characterization
04:05through a strained father-son dynamic with Atreus.
04:08Naturally, a big part of what has made Kratos' Norse story so strong
04:12is the duo's relationship, growing from distant and cold to trusting and filled with warmth.
04:17Atreus is no slouch during combat either,
04:20giving players elemental arrows and summons to play with,
04:23while passively aiding with his own attacks based on your choice of upgrades.
04:27No matter where Kratos ventures to next,
04:29we look forward to seeing the relationship with his son grow even stronger.
04:34It's not enough. We can't hide forever.
04:39We do not hide.
04:43We prepare for a fight for which we are not ready.
04:56Jak and Daxter are in a similar boat to Banjo and Kazooie
04:59in that we haven't heard from them in quite a long time,
05:02but their popularity is kept alive by a passionate fanbase.
05:05What the heck was that?!
05:07Initially the strong, silent type, Jak got his hands dirty
05:11while his transformed best pal Daxter provided excellent comedic relief.
05:15Even when Jak did get a voice for the sequel, that relationship didn't change.
05:19Instead, it was enhanced.
05:21Jak's gruffness may have been part of video games growing darker and more adult in the 2000s,
05:26but it made their friendship more engaging.
05:29It's certainly a long shot with the way Naughty Dog's work has progressed,
05:32but we'd welcome a return from this duo any day.
05:47Marcus and Dom, Gears of War series.
05:58Gears of War places heavy emphasis on cooperation,
06:01both from a multiplayer standpoint and a storytelling one,
06:04as members of the Locust Horde can tear through a group of humans if they aren't careful.
06:09And so, the relationship between Marcus Fenix and his best friend, Dominic Santiago,
06:14grew to be a noteworthy aspect of the original trilogy.
06:17It's impossible not to feel the camaraderie and love between these two
06:21as they contend with one of the most vicious forces in video game history.
06:25Plus, playing as either of them is a ton of fun as you go from one explosive firefight to the next.
06:31It's just a shame that happy endings don't come very often in this universe.
06:49Joel and Ellie, The Last of Us series.
06:56It's the outside.
06:59Look how dark it is.
07:01Few video game duos are sadder than this one.
07:04Having been emotionally damaged by his daughter's death during the Cordyceps outbreak,
07:08and 20 subsequent years of awful,
07:11Joel isn't ready for Ellie, a young girl immune to the infection who needs his protection.
07:16The grizzled hero and the hopeful child is one of our favorite tropes.
07:20The writing and performances of Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker
07:23make the familiar dynamics soar to new heights.
07:26And that makes it all the more heartbreaking whenever things don't go their way.
07:30While we considered putting Nate and Sully from Naughty Dog's other cinematic series,
07:34Drake makes a good duo with several characters across Uncharted.
07:38Joel and Ellie's relationship, on the other hand, defines the experience of both games.
07:43Happy birthday, kiddo.

07:48This is a thing that took a mighty effort to find.
07:52Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank series.
07:55You must be Big Al. It is nice to meet you. I am Clank. This is Ratchet.
08:01Ratchet & Clank have had one of the most successful video game partnerships of the 21st century.
08:06Debuting in 2002, the Lombax mechanic and his supposedly defunct Warbot pal
08:12have saved their universe from devious dictators, interdimensional invaders, and maniacal madmen.
08:18And they always do it with more flair and showmanship than most other video game duos.
08:23Part of our love for them comes from their awesome arsenal,
08:26which expands in wild directions for each game.
08:29But the balance between the two, with Ratchet's sure-footed charisma and Clank's deadpan intellect,
08:35certainly makes for a charming mixture.
08:37No matter the game, it's always a blast going on an adventure with these two.
08:42Ratchet, are you in there?
08:44I'm not coming out.
08:45You cannot stay in there forever.
08:47Yes, I can.
09:01Well, you can't get much closer than brothers.
09:04The turtle-stomping peace-bringers of the Mushroom Kingdom have been starring in games together for decades.
09:09And while Luigi initially existed as a need for Player 2, he's long since been a fan-favorite character.
09:15Where Mario is determined and heroic, Luigi is the opposite, being nervous and timid.
09:21It's always fun seeing how each of them handles their solo adventures completely differently,
09:25but it's when they go on an adventure together, whether it's a traditional platformer or an RPG,
09:30that the people of the kingdom truly celebrate.
09:33It's no wonder Bowser or any of the other villains can never get anything done,
09:37when the Super Mario Brothers are on the case.
