00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, Josh here. Today I wanted to cover couples in video games that aren't
00:05actually together. Despite a common misconception, these characters have never officially become an
00:10item even if they are virtually inseparable in our minds. Have no idea what I'm talking about?
00:16Hear me out, it'll make sense in a minute and some may surprise you. Share your favorites or
00:22what I missed down in the comments. Who do you want to see be a thing and maybe have a loving
00:27subscribe too? Cortana and Master Chief. The chief has had vague and possibly romantic-leaning
00:53towards the computer program within his suit for several installments. Despite being an AI,
00:59Chief treats Cortana like a partner instead of a replaceable asset, seemingly an uncommon bond to
01:05share in the halovers. When Cortana develops rampancy, a side effect of the AI's short lifespan,
01:11Chief defies orders to terminate her, instead refusing to turn her chip over to the UNSC.
01:17Cortana likewise has saved the Chief's life on several occasions throughout the series and has
01:21a fond loyalty to him, with a type of intimacy that while ambiguous, toes the line between
01:28work colleague and longing romantic partner. The logistics in making that work between a
01:33space soldier and a hologram was not explored any further, but due to all their on-screen
01:38time together, it's not uncommon for fans to assume they are an item of some kind.
01:52Bayonetta and Jeanne.
02:05In the somewhat controversial ending to Bayonetta 3, spoiler warning,
02:09Bayonetta ends up confessing her love for long-time romantic interest, uh, Luca. And then this happens.
02:22While fans felt like it was a lame send-off for the titular character, likely to replace her in
02:27the next entry, it also sank the more popular ship which the series had teased, the previously rival
02:33witches, Bayonetta and Jeanne. Although not outright canon, the two had lived together in
02:38Bayo 2 and shared a dynamic screen presence with lots of fun interactions, so much so that she was
02:44seen as an honorary icon in some communities. While her current relationship with Luca doesn't
02:49erase the chemistry she had with Jeanne by any means, it does feel like a big missed opportunity
02:54that the series had already set up for itself. You're a hundred times more likely to see memes
02:59about the Jeanne romance than anything else about her, so you're forgiven if you thought it was the
03:05focused relationship.
03:20Samus Aran and Adam Malkovich.
03:23Unlike you, I'm no galactic savior. I'm merely human.
03:32But I can save you.
03:33Samus likes to spend her time alone, taking long walks into cavernous alien planets and slaying
03:39horrific creatures, so she doesn't spend a lot of time with other people. Until the plot of Metroid
03:45Other M, pairing her up with a group of Federation soldiers, including her old commander Adam
03:50Malkovich. While the two are not written as romantic interests, and in fact he acts more like
03:55a father figure, they do share some banter, even after his mind is uploaded to her computer, where
04:00he becomes her AI assistant. Man, these sci-fi games, I swear. Adam refers to her as Lady, a sign
04:08of respect from Samus' perspective, and despite being against each other for most of Other M,
04:13they are important, almost family-like figures to each other, also present in Metroid Fusion
04:18and Metroid Dread. All this said, because Samus is rarely ever depicted with other people,
04:23it is an initial common misconception that they are together in some way.
04:27Not so much, that would probably come off as creepy, and he's a bit of a tool.
04:37Sonic and Amy
04:48Amy has been the stereotypical fangirl archetype,
04:54obsessed with Sonic and everything he does for most of her appearances. But the Sonic series
04:59has dialed this back quite a bit in recent years to make Amy into a character of her own, with at
05:04least a few other interests. While the Blue Blur's reactions to her affection have varied from
05:10indifferent to fond of to adamantly against, the two haven't made anything that official,
05:15sort of a Kermit and Miss Piggy eternally one-sided crush situation. Will these hedgehogs
05:22ever date? Who knows. The run of the newer cartoons seemed like the most likely place
05:26it could happen. In-game Sonic, though, is only interested in one thing, a going fest.
05:38Ryu and Chun-Li
05:45Hmm?
05:49The poster boy and girl of Street Fighter hold each other in high regards for their martial
05:54arts talents, but little affection has been shown other than that. Ryu is often busy training,
06:00becoming the best that ever was, and Chun is running a dojo and I believe helping raise a
06:05small child these days. Regardless, they make for great, friendly rivals, and it is refreshing to
06:11see characters live in their own storylines without needing to be in a relationship,
06:15since they're in the main cast. If you had to assume who was appearing at first glance,
06:20you'd probably assume it was these two. Meanwhile, Ken and Guile are the married ones.
06:37Princess Zelda and Link
06:41The hero and the princess of Hyrule have reincarnated several times, and it could be
06:49argued, in a couple of appearances, that it becomes fairly explicit that they end up together,
06:53but the full truth of the relationship is often omitted. Even in the most recent release of The
06:59Legend of Zelda The Tears of the Kingdom, where the relationship is more front and center than
07:04ever, some lore details are curiously tweaked to keep things ambiguous. I mean, Zelda moves
07:10into Link's house, but then he goes off and builds a new one when she goes missing.
07:14Link always comes to her rescue. Sometimes they feel like best friends, others, uh, more like
07:20work colleagues, but I don't think there would be any harm in finally seeing these heroes get
07:24together. Come on, Breath of the Wild 3, you can do it. Sam and Max
07:46Sam and Max are about the most married unmarried characters ever. It's not an uncommon sight for
07:52either of the two freelance detectives to cartoonishly don a wedding dress or make a
07:57quick pass at each other, as seen throughout both the games and comics. It is heavily implied that
08:02they are quite happy to be both work partners and probably more than good buddies, though it hasn't
08:08exactly been spelled out in detail other than comedic jabs, and occasionally they are presented
08:14as being actively repulsed by the idea, also in service of a joke. Otherwise, a rather well-known
08:20story in the fan community is how series creator Steve Purcell had a Sam and Max in a wedding dress
08:26cake topper for his wedding cake. Make of that what you will. Joe Valentine and Chris Redfield
08:50Two of the big protagonists in the first Resident Evil went on to become icons of the survival
08:56horror genre and really good partners. Like, really good. Just the best work partners ever.
09:04Yup, partners. Despite recurringly starring together and risking their lives for each
09:10other in later installments, Chris and Jill have never expanded on their relationship,
09:14beyond being co-workers at the Special Tactics and Rescue Service,
09:18S.T.A.R.S. Even after Jill is brainwashed and Chris is able to bring her back to reality,
09:23we never get to see what sort of impact that has on their potential relationship.
09:28Resident Evil is just sort of a loveless world in general, where our protagonists never have
09:33any time to develop feelings besides utter terror. Despite this, there's nothing saying
09:37that a much older Chris in RE Village hasn't been spending more time with his old partner,
09:42but we'll probably never know for sure. I don't think they're gonna give it to us.
10:02Steve and Alex
10:03You may be in one of two camps right now. A, wait, those Minecraft characters are together?
10:13group, and a, hey, wait, they confirm those Minecraft characters are together? group.
10:18Well, wouldn't you know it, the team behind this romantic pairing announcement later walked it
10:23back. As was stated by The Lego Group in a July to August 2016 issue, Steve is quote,
10:29a miner, builder, alchemist, and Alex's boyfriend. There you go, a whole new context
10:35for all those animated Minecraft trailers, but wait! Be it because someone at Minecraft
10:41asked Lego to walk it back, or that Lego felt like they had gone in the wrong direction,
10:45we don't know to be sure, the next issue of the Lego Club magazine noted that Creepers
10:50had gotten into the clubhouse and wrote all sorts of crazy stuff. Those crazy characters.
10:55Instead, Steve and Alex are just best friends, they clarified.
10:59After this little mix-up, the exact relationships in Minecraft are up for interpretation,
11:04though you'll find loads of people convinced that the first draft is canon,
11:08and that the Lego team had it right the first time.
11:20Mario Bros. and the Princesses
11:26We all know how this one goes. The plumber saves the princess,
11:39they get a little smooch on the nose, and the day is saved. No further elaboration.
11:43Even though they're great friends, the closest we've seen to Mario becoming an official item
11:47with Princess Peach was during the end chapters of Super Mario Odyssey, where him and Bowser
11:52fought over her attention. Other brother Luigi, meanwhile, has hinted at being a romantic interest
11:57of Princess Daisy, seen in the Mario Kart track, Daisy Circuit, where the two are sculpted as
12:02golden statues dancing hand in hand. I mean, that's pretty dang confirmed as far as the
12:06Mario universe goes. Regardless, Peach does seem to find comfort in the idea of Mario always coming
12:12to save her, and if anything, he does seem to get cake and parties out of the whole ordeal.
12:17I don't imagine they'll ever fully tie the knot, but it's hard to imagine Peach
12:21with anybody else. Except maybe Bowser, if that's your thing.
12:24But that one anime with the prince guy? That just felt straight up wrong.
